Prefacing this, as being an homage to Far Cry 2.
A small team of mercenaries, dregs, bottom of the barrel washouts and ex-military, sent into a embroiled. Embattled small nation. A powderkeg of worry and potenial anguish. Your task? Seek out the person who is holding a lit flare over the powderkeg. The one ready to drop it and being the small country down into bitter civil war.
Your job as one of the small team, is to get into the country, starting out underarmed, underarmored and with little to no supplies, procure anything you need, find the one who’s causing the unrest, kill him and then get out. All to the tune of several million dollars in your home countries currency if you can do it.
The question is, can you make it out alive? There is a chance of your character dying if they do something stupid.
But make the right choices, you can make a lot of friends, and a lot of money in the end.
Setting:
You hear about them in stories. Some small shit country, born from some warlord or some company or even somebody claiming to be the descendent of some ancient king of the land. And they carve out a country for themselves. In this case it’s some middle-African stretch of land called Matanbai, straddling fingers of the Namib and Kalahri deserts, the country is home to three distinctive regions. The Northern Nambo region that has a portion of rainforest in the far north, with hills, and wide open plains in the southern portion. Between Nambo and the southern region of Balilon, is the desert region where two fingers of the Namib and Kalahri deserts meet, forming a section of dry land, with hot sands during the day and one of the world’s highest dunes, as well as a stretch of dry acacia tree growing red sands. A thin strip of road passes right between the fingers linking the south Balilon and North Nambo regions to each other.
In this small country ostensibly ruled by an old royal african family, headed by King Natombu and his son Prince Jalu, several factions are poised to start a civil war. In a land where the mining of oil, diamonds, gems, precious metals and uranium, now threatens to destabilize and potentially draw in supporters of these operations from around the world.
Large companies from out of country coming in to victimize, monopolize and cannibalize the land for their benefit while somehow convincing the people of Matanbai that they do these things for their greater good. These companies bring in fighters and mercenaries from a great deal of places around the world. Scotsmen, Germans, Englishmen, Americans, Chinese and many other men and women from many nations come to get their own little slip and cut of the riches being taken out of this country
A rich land, with a rich culture, and even richer resources. With fingers from a variety of organizations and other nations dipped into it’s lands. Shadowed jungles, sprawling Serengeti, baking sands, and lengths of deep rivers and lakes. A land that is now beginning to show cracks and fractures of danger and deadly conflict.
Factions:
SAMC – South African Mining Company – Run by a board of rather cut throat investors. Every one looking out for the money they make through diamond, uranium and gem mining operations stretched across the nation. They have brought in a division of former French Foreign Legion, Canadian JTF2 and British SAS soldiers to train a local militia. These commanders and trainers also command the militia in the field.
COGS – Congolese Oil, Gas and Silver – A conglomerate of about six companies operating in the mining of Oil, Natural Gas and Silver, along with other precious metals. They have enough money to purchase a fairly large army of fighters. Having even bought out a former Mogadishu warlords entire army and the Warlord too.
The Dry Trail – Believed to be a group of traders, merchants and civilians, likely lorry/semi. Drivers who operate either with the man pulling things apart, or have been in existence before he came around and just kinda stepped in and helped to move arms, vehicles and gear back and forth between the borders into Matanbai and neighbouring countries like South Africa, Zambia, and Botswana to name a few.
The Eyes of the Hyena – A group of civilians, mercenaries and even Company employees who unofficially act as the eyes, ears and sometimes mouth of the man believed to be the Hyena.
The Pack – A very small group of men and women, who somehow are believed to be close confidants of the man known as the Hyena.
Names to know:
The Hyena – A pseudonym assuredly, this the the name that several world governments and African continent governments are using to identify a man who is shipping Cold War and Modern era weapons into Matanbai, to assist in what is beginning to look like a full bore civil war.
Commander Barcai – A North African military leader who has been sent south to manage an Angolan response to the potential civil war. Operating out of a border outpost, and commanding some 3000 soldiers. Currently in charge of a recon mission. Though if things come to a head, his is the closest military response.
Professor A’loko – An European educated Political Science professor, thought to be a neutral party, despite having family who work for COGS.
Edgar Malkia – A gang leader, of a group of toughs who operate out of the Matanbai capitol city of Tangayi. Rough, angry and wanting to prove to the country his gang isn’t to be messed with. Many of them have managed to get low grade weapons from the Dry Trail and the Pack.
Miscellany:
You may be wondering, what is the tech era of this RP? Early 2000s, with no definite date to keep it fluid. You’re not coming into this RP with rail guns, but a surplus AK-47 or Scar-H? Perhaps. You are a lot more likely to find Cold War and Pre-War on Terror weapons though. But really high end guns, Not likely. Guns Pre-2010 you’re likely good to go.
There is the very very very real possibility that in a bad position, your character can and may die. Body armor is in short supply in Matanbai, and if you do find a chest plate, ceramic or kevlar, that’s going to cost you big.
Your character can be a badass, but don’t expect the ability to take on 10 armed fighters and come out smelling like a rose. Try me, I will abuse GM privledge.
