I'm Pollen, hope you're not allergic. I like writing a myriad of characters in all kinds of genres, so I'm pretty much down for anything roleplay-wise.
Do I have to jump in just to get the ball rolling? I will, don't you make me do it.
You could. However, I think it's more that certain particular people need to get in rather than just 'someone needs to post...'
Anyways, on a more general note, I did notice that this is supposedly "Wave 1." I don't really have time to participate right now (got a tournament to manage), but I'm wondering if there may be further waves/battles over the next few months?
Regardless, it should certainly be fun to watch in the meantime :)
Alright, mind if I shot some questions on the OoC while I’m working on Trixi, my PC who’s entering this? Others might end up having the same questions or not even thought of them until much later, so I thought I do it this way instead of PMing it. ow, apologies if I mention something that was mentioned prior since I’m still going over the OoC to gleam everything I can.
Hooooo boy, okay:
1. Time tends to be pretty fluid, and as you said the amount can vary from post to post. If an ability has a specific time noted in it (e.g. "after a delay of three seconds, a fireball is launched"), then the opponent will likely interpret it in such a frame. For the sake of unspecified preparations, however, it's down to posts. If you charge or set up something in one post and use it later on, it's prepped. Given the mostly physical nature of combat at this level, however, I doubt that the number of preps will be particularly important, since none of the characters involved should really have the power to build up massive attacks.
2. There will be a time limit for tourney rounds. Rather than impose a limit on the matches themselves, I intend to simply set a date when the next round starts, and have all matches conclude by then. Fallen matches will be unaffected by this schedule, though it will be in the interest of participants to finish them fast.
3. If a stalemate occurs, either a contestant can concede or a judge (possibly Skalla if he's available) can review the fight so far to determine a victor (probably whoever is the least wounded, or who has dominated the fight so far).
4. Fallen matches are purely optional, and players choose their opponents. If two Fallen want to fight, they can get together and fight, in the hopes that one of them might amass enough victories for another shot at the title.
5. Damage from previous fights can be pretty much ignored, contestants start each fight in reasonable condition (otherwise, the later fights would be a bunch of cripples throwing themselves at each other :P ). Fighters may choose to keep wounds/scars if they wish, but this is optional.
6. Fighting is turn-based, you can't directly control the opponent's character, something you get ready for in advance is prepped, preps can result in more powerful attacks, you can't really ignore what your opponent is doing, and actions have to be plausible/justified... there are different styles, but we're trying to be inclusive here, so mostly just the basics.
7. The stone is supposedly made from dead angels- so it'd be dark, very hard, and not particularly conductive. The trees are fairly thin, mostly around 10-20 meters in height. Terrain within the arenas can be affected, but the solid borders/doors are virtually indestructible.
Hope that helps, let me know if you have other questions.
1) He can be "killed" yes but the regeneration process is so long he might as well be out of combat. It's the same with the rest of my characters.
2) Yes. Touch, charge, fire.
3) Yes it extends in a cone. Guess I didn't phrase right. It'll freeze just about anything, not instantly but like Diablo style.
4) Sure.
Excellent! You'll want to edit your CS to clarify #3 and alter #4, but I figure I can trust you on that so I'm going go ahead and say the Emperor is approved. Will add him to the list of contestants now!
And then there were seven... Once the next fighter is approved, I'll probably get the ball rolling and start announcing match-ups.
Yup! We had a bunch of declarations of interest, but one of them (Vile) hasn't confirmed it or submitted a character, even when I Mentioned him. So if you can get a character up within the next couple days, I'll give you a spot!
Well since everyone's posting theirs, I'll post mine here too. Probably the lowest power fighter I've ever made.

Voice: Loud, booming. Gaelic accent.

Backstory: Guzman Galliard the Third was born in the township of Ulysses, a castle-fortress that served as a place of stay for travelers on the Kingdom Highway and the homes for the many farmers in the rolling hills. He belonged to the Galliard line of kings; honorable and heroic men who were in charge of the safety and prosperity of Ulysses. His father, Oswald Galliard the Fourth, handed Guzman the throne at the turn of the 427th Year, heralding the new year with a new king.
For twenty years Guzman held the throne, besting many a foe and bringing the same good fortune and health to the townspeople under his care. He married a young woman during this time, later to be the queen and mother of his son, Grimmond. They would have three more children through the years, three lovely daughters: Griffith, Maine and Rose. By his fiftieth year of age, Guzman was growing old and Grimmond was reaching his twenty-first birthday. And then, in the year 456, it was finally time.
All the townspeople were gathered in the castle courtyard. A grand feast was held in celebration of the old king passing his crown to the new. The whole family was present, including Guzman's father, now elderly but still healthy. Toasts were made, songs were sung and everybody was happy. At the end, Guzman was to present the crown and his ceremonial sword to his son and the ceremony would be complete.
It would never come to be.
The mysterious being known as the Dealer made its appearance, sealing Guzman within the card of the Emperor. It then vanished, leaving the kingdom in an uproar as the Galliard family tried to figure out what had happened.
Meanwhile, between the dimensions, the Dealer cut Guzman a deal: if he did as he commanded, he would be allowed to return to his kingdom once a year to visit his family and make sure the kingdom was in order. Without any other choices, the good King obeyed. The first cycle around, Guzman immediately ordered another ceremonial crown, sword and shield made due to his extended absence.
Now the original crown, sword and shield lay with the once-King on his travels through the dimensions, dealing the Dealer's justice where he sees fit.
Combat Stats
Dominant Hand: Right
Equipment:
Upper Body
Ring of Frost; a sapphire ring on his left index finger. When the gem is touched it charges for a second then unleashes a five foot long, three foot wide cone of cold that instantly freezes anything within its reach.
Ring of Flame; a ruby ring on his left ring finger. When the gem is touched it charges for a second then fires a ball of fire in a ballistic trajectory towards a target. The fireball travels straight for about fifty feet before it starts to dip.
Ring of Healing; a pearl ring on his right ring finger. When the pearl is touched it charges then releases a burst of healing magic, instantly healing any moderate to light wounds.
Lower Body
-
Weapons
Bormak's Wrath; a large two-handed battle axe taken in combat after Galliard felled an enemy warlord that was muscling in on his territories violently and mercilessly. Galliard rode into battle, bested Bormak and claimed his axe as a fitting trophy and a warning to others not to contest his might.
Stalwart Shield; a kite shield forged by his blacksmiths, the shield has served as his family's badge of honour and as protective gear for all generations of the Galliard line.
Gallant Duty; a short sword also forged by family blacksmiths. Has been used by all generations of the family line as their combat and ceremonial sword. The sword is a double edged sword, reminiscent of a real world gladius.
Abilities
Superhuman King; through years of refining, hunting, fighting and waging war, Guzman's body has attained a significantly higher level of strength and endurance than your regular human. His reflexes are also heightened.
Titan; Guzman's immense strength lends force and weight to his blows. Each is like being hit with several hundred sledgehammers at once.
Unkillable; if the King is felled in combat (and he will cause he bleeds like any other human), the Dealer recalls his body into his card. The magics within the card restore and heal his body to optimal levels, thus ensuring that he can never truly die.
Magic
-
Well, you got him submitted now! :)
There's some things I'd like clarifying, however, as well as somethings you need to tone down:
- First and foremost, 'Unkillable' is only a way to remove him from battle (thus forfeiting) so you can use him again in the future, right? This would probably seem obvious, but I once fought someone with a similar ability who literally used it to revive their character mid-battle and keep fighting... so I would like confirmation that this will not be abused in such a manner.
- Secondly, the rings. You mentioned they charge before activating, would this work similarly to prepping a spell? Would the charging of the rings be perceptible to an observer in any way?
- Thirdly, the ring of Frost 'instantly' freezes anything within its reach. Maybe it's just the wording, but wouldn't this make the attack virtually impossible to avoid? There's no way for a fighter to know how far the cone extends (unless they've seen it before), and if the freezing is instant it would be impossible to get out of... perhaps the cone could expand outwards from the ring, and/or take some time to freeze what falls within the cone.
- Lastly, the Titan ability is fine in concept... but 'several hundred sledgehammers at once' is waaaaaaaaaay too much strength. You've already given him enhanced physical abilities with Superhuman King, so I'd recommend either removing Titan entirely or toning it down to something like Shen's Qi enhancement (which adds up to around one sledgehammer of extra force per blow, and costs him stamina at that).
Hope this isn't too much trouble... but yeah, would like to get this stuff sorted out before approving. Thank you!
@Drifting Pollen I'm fine with the Eon form being locked for the duration of the tournament. Do tell me if you reconsider them, though.
As for the Selenic form, I'm guessing you're not fine with it becoming completely invisible? I was thinking the hilt could be seen, so an enemy would know where the blade is pointing, however they wouldn't be able to estimate the weapon's length until after the initial strike.
Okay, good to know. I'll let you know if I make any alterations or anything to power levels, although I do prefer to keep things stable.
The Selenic form was less overtly powerful, but I was worried about its invisibility being used to set up impossible-to-dodge strikes. The hilt being visible would make such attacks less easy for her, which is definitely enough.
Thanks for working with me on this. With the restrictions you specified, Iolanthe is approved, I'll add her to the list now!
That gives us 6 fighters registered so far, so we'd only need a couple more for a good number to start. @Vile@DJAtomika you two still interested?
After looking over a few times, I hope her weapon, Hyperion, isn't too strong for this combat tier. I counted it's usage in as one of her 3 magical powers, whilst the 3rd practically isn't magical.
Anyways, here's the character I'd like to enter with!
IOLANTHE ADASTREIA The Shining Hoplite
Background: Iolanthe's upbringing was a simple one, she was born in Athens, to a silk weaver of a mother, and a father who was an archer in the city state's army. War was commonplace in Greece, and engulfed much of the young girl's life. Even though Greece was solidified as a country before Iolanthe's time, frequent disputes between Athens, and its neighboring city states, such as Sparta, and Corinth, hardened the girl's outlook on life. At age nine, she lost her father, who died in battle during the Achaean-Roman wars, which ultimately resulted in a loss for Greece. During this time, Iolanthe was young, but she was much unlike the girls her age, many of which sought after boys, or tried their hands in the trades; perhaps it was because her father was Spartan, the desire to do battle ran deep in her blood, and vengeance was lustfully sought after. Young Iolanthe played stick fighting with the boys, and came home with many a bruise at the end of each day. Deeper in to the war, at age ten, Iolanthe realized she had a power unlike any other, the ability to see things that nobody else could, with a precision to mock the gods, she was blessed, and joined the Greek army as a scout. Iolanthe's teen years involved practicing swordplay with the local militia, who adored her spunk, and manning the country's beacon outposts, where she could properly utilize her vision.
Perhaps if Iolanthe was older, she might have been better able to help her country fend off the Romans. Word reached Athens of Corinth's fall, only years after the unity of Greek city states. She wanted to join in the army's march, but was not allowed, luckily, for they were defeated in battle. When the superpower that was Rome finally pushed onwards to Athens, there little the city could do. Iolanthe's teenage years were spent during Rome's domination of Greece.
At age twenty, Iolanthe's vengeful mind was mostly quelled, for life with the Romans wasn't so bad, love for the gods was shared across the empire, and there was little more than a language gap. Eventually, Iolanthe went on to become a priestess to the stars, assuming a religious life might quell her inner rage. She observed the stars, and marked many points on astrological charts, but years passed by in boredom, and she eventually fell in with old allies that fled the Corinthian war. The complete annihilation of Corinth caused enough backlash to give reason to the Greeks, to create a secret rebellion, of which Iolanthe joined, and fought back against the Romans.
During Iolanthe's third battle against the romans, she was met by a powerful adversary on the battlefield. She proved herself invaluable in battle, many a legionnaire flinched before her skill with the spear and aspis, however the Romans had a secret weapon, a man with a magic voice, who invoked this power upon the hoplites of Rome. Using his voice, he cursed and brainwashed the Greeks to serve Rome, and Iolanthe became the man's prize and joy. She was directly integrated in to the royal Legion, and her meddle was tested against the many artifacts seized by Rome - that is when they discovered the truth, she was Hyperion's champion.
Personality: Honour and virtue above all other things, Iolanthe's pride and pursuit of glory often compel and motivate her actions. In battle, she is tempered, but extremely analytic, her eyes of course being blessed by the divines. With ease, she can determine the motives of an individual simply by observing their physical gestures, making her seem very wise. Quick thinking has saved this hoplite more often than anything else, she is intelligent enough to convince hardened warriors of her usefulness, even in an age dominated by men.
Appearance: Beneath her helmet, Iolanthe is a beautiful woman, with rosy cheeks & lips, her eyes are a dark brown, just slightly darker than her long chestnut coloured hair. Her complexion is often marred by dirt, sweat, or bruises from battle, and her thin nose tilts slightly to her left. Standing upright, without shoes, Iolanthe is five feet, and ten inches tall. She is musclebound, with very large thighs and calves, and oddly squarish shoulders. She has smaller than average sized breasts, and a wide hip ratio.
Equipment: ↳ Hyperion: The legendary sword-lance, named after a titan god who fathered the sun, moon, and dawn; its blade is six feet long, its handle two. This weapon's shape and form changes depending on the time of day, and it is otherwise the most indestructible item in Iolanthe's armour. When the sun is high, the lance glows a bright gold, harmful to the naked eye if stared at for too long, in this state, the lance's blade becomes superheated, allowing it to melt through metals given enough time and force. Unlike most lances, Hyperion's spearhead is flat, and sharpened to act as both a slashing and piercing weapon. When the cowl of night looms overhead, Hyperion's Selenic form awakens, and it loses its glow, turning ice cold and invisible. At dawn, or dusk is when Hyperion is most deadly in battle, in its Eon form, the spear becomes ethereal; at dawn, it glows brightly, and burns whatever it passes through, at dusk, the reverse effect, anything struck by the incorporeal blade will be frozen.
↳ Aspis: Two large round shields are equipped to both of Iolanthe's arms, which she sports as her unique defensive fighting style. Both shields are made of steel, and gilded with bronze, weigh roughly twelve pounds each, and cover 2 feet in diameter. Most Greek Aspis are larger in size, however Iolanthe opted for a smaller variant, due to the constriction to her dexterity caused by brandishing one on each forearm.
↳ Gladius: Two short swords are equipped to Iolanthe's hip, one on each side. The swords are made of steel.
↳ Panoply: A full set of armour, comprising of both Greek and Roman crafts. A signature muscle cuirass, uniquely crafted for her, allowing room for her breasts, unlike most Greek armours which are made for men. A Legionnaire's helmet, signifying her service to the Roman legion. Bracers equipped to both her wrists, and shins. A metal plated skirt protects much of her legs and waist. Iolanthe wears no pauldrons, nor any plates for her joints, so her movements aren't that hindered.
Abilities: ↳ Hyperion's Blessing: Like most Greek gods, Hyperion has a favored champion, Iolanthe, his blessing upon her is the power to brandish his legendary spear without being burnt or frozen.
↳ First Principle: Iolanthe's eyes were blessed at birth, and throughout her life, she realized her true power was not a martial art, nor in the trades or crafts, but a scholarly prowess. Her observational skills are beyond human, proven so during her city state's war against Rome, where Iolanthe was able to spot the Roman army on the horizon, and calculate exactly how many men marched, as well as exactly what kind of weapons and siege engines they brought to the battlefield. Her visual prowess goes even beyond distance, fog, smoke, and darkness only vaguely disrupt her line of sight, she is capable of staring at the sun without burning her eyes, and her mind is exceptionally quick to react to anything she perceives as an immediate threat.
↳ Physicality: Unlike many other champions, Iolanthe lacks the upper body strength to push boulders, or wrestle minotaurs, however she does have her qualities. Her thigh and calve muscles are immense, and she is fully capable of enduring powerful impact attacks, if she blocks them with her shield, and channels the kinetic energy through her legs. It is difficult for even the strongest of champions to break Iolanthe's brace, due to the sheer power of her lower body. Her dashing speed is formidable, however the weight of her armour is cumbersome, she is well known for her short dashes, which add tremendous force to lance thrusts.
Interesting character! Power-wise, most of her unique abilities are more enhancements, which fits in well. However, as you suspected, Hyperion could be a problem. Its regular abilities (toughness, brightness/heat and cold/invisibility) are fair enough, given that they only apply to the spear. A couple questions, however.
- When you say the spear becomes invisible at night, do you mean transparent, or completely impossible to see? Would any distortion be noticeable to sharp eyes, if the weapon were being moved quickly?
- The spear's Eon forms (the dawn/dusk ones) are probably too powerful for this tournament. Would you be alright with forgoing these for now (we could just have none of her fights take place at dawn/dusk)?
The Eon forms are the main issue, really. I may need a bit of time to consider, but I think if we can figure out a way to work around those, I can put her on the list :)
I'd say it's something like having an extra 11-12 pound weight attached when Qi is infused, only Shen doesn't actually feel said weight and, um, it's just extra force.....
So, imagine 11-12 lb weights on Shen's staff and limbs when he infuses Qi. That's the best way I can describe it, because damn words fail me.
Personality: Shen is, in a word, playful. He likes to joke and goof around, often annoying those around him. Combine that with his physical abilities, and he is quite a handful to deal with. This is made even more apparent in battle, as Shen will often taunt his opponents and goad them into attacking as he nimbly dodges and blocks reckless attacks. Despite that, though, Shen is intelligent enough to tell when to take things seriously, and will drop his playful personality to take on a more serious approach to someone who he deems a worthy challenge.
Weapon: Quarterstaff: a rod of metal, with blunt metal tips. 4' 10" in length. Treated and enchanted to resist the pressures and forces of battle. Nothing special other than that.
Abilities: Physically, Shen is quite strong and agile, although it is only twice as much as what a normal human can achieve with years of hard work. Having been trained for a staff ever since he was young, he has gained much skill with the use of a staff, although it is mainly for defense and mobility rather than offense. Shen's fighting style does not rely on direct combat, instead revolving around balance and agility, so he has been training his stamina immensely. So, he spends more of his time dodging and guarding, waiting for his opponent to tire himself out before taking the offensive.
Shen also possesses the ability to manipulate his own Qi, or life force energy, as well as the Qi in the nearby air (within arm's reach), and use it to aid him in battle. Qi itself is invisible, although more observant people can see the shimmer of air as it is manipulated. His most notable uses of it are infusing the ends of his staff or limbs with Qi to increase the force of each blow, firing Qi blasts (similar to a strong gust of wind) from his palms and feet, and moving his staff around in the air as if he was telekinetic (still restricted to arm's reach). However, using Qi wears out his stamina faster than anything else, and even with all his stamina training, he will tire himself out if he uses it for too long.
Seems mostly good! Before I approve it though, I'd just like to get some clarification: when he infuses his staff or limbs with Qi, to what extent is the force of the blow increased? Doesn't necessarily need to be exact, and it can vary depending on how long it's prepped, but it'd be nice to have an estimate or average to go on.
An underdog would like to reserve that 8th spot.
This is a perfect opportunity for me to claim a few ranked cookie points.
If you'll have me.
We'll have you! Putting you up on the list now, hope to see your character soon.
If canon characters are allowed I'll enter with Tifa Lockhart of Final Fantasy VII.
Canon characters in an original RP... I'm afraid I'll have to disallow that. That sort of thing never ends well, from what I've seen. Besides which, what I know of Tifa's abilities puts her well above the power tiers intended for this tournament.
You're welcome to enter with a character similar to Tifa, or somewhat based on her, so long as you had a full character sheet.
