"A million times I have done this charade. The moment people figure it out, I get the boot." she thought.
"But don't you want to see the fear in their eyes when they see who you really are...? Don't you want dominion of this place, just like how you were unchallenged in Vaal Kastrix?" said the Voice.
Ciara scoffed, immediately thinking of Gulliver and Valen. "I'd love to wipe the smirk off their faces."
"It starts by building a rumor. A rumor of power. This could be the place to start."
She took a deep breath, narrowing her eyes resolutely at the Undermage. "Head Advisor, with all due respect, you have no right to ask me about my intentions. If you want answers..."
She stood from her seat, rising to her full height.
Her breath caught when she felt the cold metal of a pistol against her temple.
"Put the heart down, and back the hell up if you want your friend to live," the guard said to Ellie in a rumbling baritone, digging the gun into Dream's head.
Dream squinted at Ellie, vision blurred as she tried to breathe. The heart, glinting in Ellie's hands.
The doctor, his face turning white every time she asked what would happen if they failed. Above all else, he said, they had to keep the heart safe. They had to, even if it meant...
She snarled, her boot stamping down on the guard's foot, a burst of light bruising the bone. He yelped, losing his grip. That's all she needed, and she tore away. But in her haste, she saw his free arm reaching for her, and she slipped on panicked feet as he pushed her off the railing.
She held back a scream, staring straight down into the boiling pit below. The guard wrapped a tight hand around her ankle, and Ellie could see Dream's other foot flailing; she restrained herself poorly from kicking the guard, desperately hoping she wouldn't die.
As her captor supported himself against the railing, his pistol pointed at Ellie.
Deep, golden orbs stared back at her from within the cave.
God, she couldn't breathe.
He was monstrous. The ground trembled under her feet as his rippling, massive body exited the cave. Thunderous footsteps left cracks in the dirt, his breath sent waves of heat creeping over her skin. The transformation was slow, but it looked like something from a nightmare with the way his long teeth were bared.
A great and terrible roar sounded from his gaping maw.
"You don't sound so good Layla. Maybe... Maybe I can help you?-"
Layla's head twisted, her entire body stiffening.
Help?
What did he mean by help? Was he… referring to his powers? Ah, what was it again. He dealt with emotions, right? Layla couldn't remember entirely. And in that moment, she felt a heavy weight of anxiety.
She couldn't remember what he could do. And he wanted to… to help?
The last time someone wanted to help, someone ended up dead. Yes… Yes, how could she have been so stupid? When Jack portrayed himself as a saint, whisking her and Void to the Void. When Britney simply prattled on about how ‘she cared’ and ‘this was for the best.’
She trusted the people who wanted to offer her help.
And what did she get for it?
What did she get for it?!
Void was dead.
Eaten.
Her friend. The one who promised she'd see her family again, who was gonna keep her safe from all the monsters that plagued her.
Layla couldn't breathe. She could feel the tight, helpless grip of grief dig into her again, tearing at wounds that had barely set.
She couldn't risk agreeing to Mr. Devola, could she? She didn't even know what she was agreeing to!
"Well, long story short, we were raided by Police Officers. Federal police, actually, government agents more like. Magical people, like us. They attacked.”
Layla’s face paled at that. The police did what?! What the- Why? Why would they do such a thing?
What exactly did she miss?!
”I can show you if you don't mind me using my power."
Now there was the kicker. If she was hesitant before, this was the incentive to agree.
But, she felt she couldn't see a damn thing, as she stared up at Mr. Devola. He was impossible to read, appeared perfectly amiable. Did he have a darker motive?
Everyone did, when it came to the Sycamore.
Everyone.
It was like she was looking at a light in dark waters, unaware of the jaws held open, waiting.
But she wanted to know.
Did she risk trusting Mr. Devola like she trusted Jack? Like she trusted Britney?
She waited to hear the voice of Void in her mind, usually giving perfect advice. But right now? Dead quiet. She couldn't even decide what Void would say in this situation.
“I.. I don't know…” She started, her hands wringing as she stared as the ground.
She was really on her own, all alone.
Well… what was the worst that could happen?
She couldn't lose Void twice, could she?
The pain in her chest, the grief, the pain, could she shed it somehow, even temporarily? Like with how Miss Vorpal did at the speakeasy?
She looked up at him, a resoluteness in her eyes.
Maybe, maybe she’d let Mr. Devola ‘help’.
“Uh… sure… Do whatever you're going to do.”
And she reached out to the light in the dark waters.
Others would snap their attention to Professor Alto's blatant cursing, grunts, and the sound of something wet dripping on the floor.
Yes, others would stare in horror. In panic.
But Ciara?
Ciara didn't have eyes for that.
No.
Her eyes were focused, as they were comfortably settled back in their classroom, on a certain half-elf. White hair, long bangs, focused and crisp eyes. And surrounding her, a bright, swirling, near-blinding aura of tangible deliciousness.
Ciara just stared, a bit of drool escaping her mouth. The wounds made her especially Hungry, the pain gnawing at her belly. How tasty would it be? How satisfying would it be to just have a taste?
“Too many people to kill to eliminate the witnesses.”
“Mm…”
“The dark one has left, and the little pet of yours is no where to be seen. Two less witnesses.”
“...Uh huh.”
“If you throw a curtain over the windows, you can be done in less than a few seconds, and sate our Hunger.”
Ciara wasn't actually listening this time, nodding her head absent-mindedly at the Voices as she sat there, in pain, half-delirious due to Hunger.
“The analyst is focused on the Astran-loving injured. Two that will offer up less resistance.”
The mention of the professor was the only thing that could snap Ciara out of her Hunger daze. She immediately narrowed her eyes, teeth slightly barred.
“You're forgetting how strong it is. Do you not feel the burns on my back? Did you not see the flaming sword?”
She broke off her gaze from Iraleth to glare at the professor, who was being given aid by Chunji.
“This is one to look out for. There's something… wrong here. It could prove to be a problem in the future, given our… history.”
The Voices echoed in agreement.
Ciara’s eyes slid to the door, sliding shut from Otis’ exit. He was focused. What did it know?
Ciara considered looking for the pet, but her pain spiked, and she held back a moan under her breath. No. There was another item on the agenda that took more precedence.
The clinic.
With a grimace, Ciara got up from her desk, passing her borrowed sword to a shadow to hold as she moved to the door. Her eyes hovered on the professor, a cold glare, before she too, exited.
She followed the signs in the school, the ones that Michael the janitor had graciously put back, to the northern exit. From here, she was within the quaint town of Wingram, and it was easy enough to pick up the large sign that said ‘WINGRAM CLINIC’. A few mannekin were stationed outside, but barely reacted as she eyed them as she walked past.
Not too busy, she thought, as she entered the building. Her eyes surveyed the waiting room, filled with a few students - none of whom she recognized. With the shadow shifting the sword held tip down behind her, Ciara moved to the receptionist desk.
“I… need to see the healer.”
She was painfully aware of the gashes on her inner elbows and the mild burns along her back.
Elys nodded a few times as the owner, Crag, spoke. It sounded promising. Perhaps this was the break she was looking for.
“Thank you.”
And with that, she adjusted her robes, stretched out her staff hand, and left the tavern.
The streets were once again a cacophony of sound and gravity. Curiously, the body of the one-handed man was nowhere to be found. Elys’ corner of her lip curled in a slight frown, before she headed to the right, past the flurry and rush of masses. She counted the segments of buildings, watching the patterns of moving masses to discern when a new block would begin.
The well was a bit of a challenge. She walked right past it, not realizing what it was, until she heard the slosh of water as someone pulled up the bucket. She corrected her trajectory, and continued until the air began to change.
She sniffed the air as the sounds of children an clacking wood came within earshot. Incense. The air was rich with it. Unique for the rest of the city, to be sure.
Elys stood in front of the bundling, surrounded by voices of happy children.
That… that didn't make any sense. She was looking for the Bladerights. A place where a sword could be used. But this…
She stared hard at the building’s mass in front of her.
For all intents and purposes… this place sounded like a daycare at best, orphanage at worst.
Was this Crag’s idea of a joke?
Her lips pursed.
Well. She may as well confirm her suspicions. Was this a place for children? Or was it a place for blades?
If it was the former, she'd be at a sore loss for time. She would have to make up for it by moving as quickly to the center of the city as possible. Try to find another opportunity. Or just say to hell with it, do a bit of menial labour for supplies, and dive into the Abyss.
If it was the latter, then her trust and good karma would have paid off, and she'd be closer to earning a bit of coin in a way she felt most comfortable at, where her skills flourished.
Regardless, the only way to know for sure was to move forward.
Elys patted her robes straight, ensuring she felt presentable, checked her staff and her sword, and approached the building. She tapped along the building until she found an indent to indicate a doorway, and opened it.
