Bio

I'm not really a bird.

-0-

Where did I play,
A land of twisted branches,
A kingdom of clay,
A swamp of memories,
A never-ending day,

Where did I run,
Across the dawn,
Through the sun,
Across the sky,
Through laughs and fun,

Where did I walk,
Pristine grass green,
White cliffs of chalk,
Pools of sky so blue,
Orchard stones that talk,

Where did I sit,
By the gates of silver,
Near endless pit,
By forever horizon,
You may remember it.

With all the fuss going on and all the shouts and calls of her name, Minnow fell into contemplative silence that would rival a recluse dedicated to the Maker’s word. A thoughtful hum vibrated from her throat, putting her in zen as she pieced together all the action spilling about her. The elf’s brow knitted and she pinched her chin, the look of a philosopher (or at least a thinker) creasing her forehead.

“First,” Minnow finally announced, a finger jabbing into Yoshina’s back, “She wore this on her own volition. Second!” She folded her arms. “I have never seen this outfit before in my life. THIRD!” She gritted her teeth, eyeing her friend Shina. “Can you tell your pet dragon to stop yelling at my patrons?”

“And finally!” Minnow held up a finger, “yes, you can go, Yoshina — but don’t bring the dragon back with you.” She stomped her foot. “ANYTHING ELSE!?” Her eyes dared a challenger, the look of Grandma Dessalt very much alive in her descendant’s left eye.

Minnow frowned deeply at Rudolph, her gaze only being broken by Yoshina’s sudden response to the job offer. Striking up a forced smile, Minnow nodded eagerly.

“No uniform required, and I’ll even include a room for free while you work. You’ll be pulling the night shi- well the morning shift, six in the morning until two in the afternoon.” Minnow clasped Yoshina’s hands, shaking them. “Would a silver a day be enough?”

Only when Yoshina reminded Minnow about the dragon did her demeanor sour again, “Shit, right — the dragon… Rudolph, do you have any handy spells for dealing with the larceny loving lizard?”

The night elf wagged a finger at Yoshina. “You can’t trust dragons, no matter how nice they seem to be or what they say. They are 100% always up to no good and it will always result in disaster and destruction, it’s honestly for the best that we deal with it now.” Shiftering her voice towards Rudolph she continued, “hopefully with a sealing spell or perhaps transfiguration into something more palpable and able to be shoved into a jar.”

“Oh you know,” Minnow replied to Yoshina, “Dishes, sweeping — though I suppose the magical servant can do those things, so housekeeping…” She was counting off her fingers now, “Checking in and out guests, serving — oh can you cook?”

She stared intently at the woman, awaiting a response. Only when Rudolph announced a dragon did Minnow startle.

“Dragon!? Where!?”

The innkeeper nearly tripped over the fainting Rudolph as she dove for the broom closer, scrounging up a broken piece of her broom. Rolling to her feet, Minnow brandished the wooden pole angrily.

“Pesky Dragons! Point me to em, Rudolph!”

But Rudolph was still ill disposed. Frowning, Minnow poked the wizard with her foot.

Minnow snatched the scroll from Rudolph, a small smile forming. “Well I suppose this covers it all.”

Snapping the scroll open, Minnow roughly placed her palm over the inscribed runes and began a quiet chant. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head, a flash of white pulsing from them, mirrored by a flash from the scroll. Another pulse and the scroll disappeared, two tiny footprints appearing in the dusty spatterings across the floor.

“Dishes,” Minnow ordered and the footsteps scampered away. Turning back to Rudolph, Minnow collected the gold as well.

“Thank you!”

Minnow exited the kitchen, a clay platter in each hand. Each platter was signed with the mispelled name of one of the town’s children, and on top of each sat two bowls. One bowl on either side held a bunch of speckled green eggs — wafting with the smell of pickling vinegar. The other set of bowls held the sloshing orange soup known as Zaft to the villagers. In earnest it was completely unique to The Other Mine and an invention by Minnow’s own father — Mr Striper Dessalt.

Zaft was nothing more than a gibberish word Mr Striper Dessalt had used to persuade Minnow and her older sister Herring to try the exotic dish. In truth it tasted better than it smelled, and contained a healthy amount of salt, cumin, and cracked pepper which would have been aromatic if not for the mysterious grey chunks floating about — identity still unconfirmed.

Holding a glittering pearlesque smile, Minnow placed a bowl of each in front of her dragon-in-disguise customer and the red-headed easterner.

“Now careful,” came Minnow’s voice (steeped in customer service), “it’s rather hot.”

She placed a metal spoon in front of each patron. Looking idly over at the Easterner, Minnow continued. “Now if you need work, I could really use a hand. I’m running on two hours of sleep right now and it is not okay.”

Minnow pointed her chin at Shina. “And this one’s too busy to help nowadays… or so she says.”

It was at that moment that the wizard Rudolph came barreling into the tavern through the window. Minnow jumped in surprise, but the wizard simply blasted right by her and straight into the broom closet, conjuring a blast of dust.

Cringing, Minnow watched the clumsy wizard fall out of the closet, now dressed in splinters, dust, and straw.

“Put it on my tab,” he coughed.

Minnow blinked at her old acquaintance before summoning a scowl. “Oh no! Not this time, Rudolph! I already had it with the whole door thing last month — they still reek of lemons.”

Placing the empty platters gingerly in front of Shina, Minnow marched over to Rudolph and stabbed a finger into his chest.

“I’m calling your tab,” Minnow demanded, a sly twinkle in her eyes, “unless you want to settle it in a trade.”

“Unfortunate,” Minnow replied to Grey. “Well if you do find some extra time, just stop on in — I can pay by the day.”

Before Minnow could turn her attention back to her Raccoon friend, a lady she had never seen before had dragged Shina away (who left with the promises of paying her tab). Minnow snorted, yeah, right.

As quickly as that happened, another customer was already barking orders. Minnow frowned deeply and spun to meet the rude yelling. "In a MINU-ooooOooo!"

The elf's eyes widened at the sight of the glittering treasure. Putting on her most polite face, Minnow approached the table -- smile wide.

"One of everything?" She smoothed her approach. "We only have three things this late, is that okay?"

“It’s of no problem,” Minnow sighed after pouring the foamy drink.

The elf took a seat opposite of Grey and used her foot to kick another away from the table for Shina to plop into. Looking very much like her own customer now, Minnow let her forehead thunk against the table, her silvery hair splaying over the surface.

Her muffled voice came, “Oh Shina, I really need to get that help… this is too much for just me.”

Peeking up, her nocturnal eyes studied Grey’s face. “Do you need a job?”

“A bite to ea— ?“

Minnow was cut off by a sudden onslaught of customers. The sudden noise caused the elf to flinch and slam her eyes shut. She held her palms against her ears in a vain attempt to dampen the assault. Minnow stayed in her strange world until her friend, Shina, came bursting towards her.

The raccoon tailed lady was barking about creatures and beasts, adamant on danger. Minnow’s head was spinning, and before she could even ask what Shina was on about, the boy at the table growled his own outrage.

Finally, the scene seemed to settle long enough for Shina to request a drink, to which Minnow simply blinked.

“Beer?”

THUNK

A heavy glass cup slammed on the table in front of Grey, causing it to jump. Minnow stood next to the poor boy, eyes still closed and crusty, a floppy brimmed hat hanging over her face — in spite of the indoor atmosphere.

Without looking, the exhausted elf tipped a carafe of water over the glass, lazily pouring a steady stream all the way to the brim with oddly perfect precision..

THUD

Minnow all but dropped the carafe perfectly between Grey and his cup. “Refill at your will.” A deep yawn. “And dunnahmmaaasmmmmmm.”

The woman began to slouch over, wobbling in place until a loud snore turned into a sudden snort. Minnow jumped awake, her hat flying off and sailing to the floor. Now exposed, her startled eyes glanced over the boy.

“What brings you out so late?”

The loudest snort on this side of the Lamdeck river wheezed Minnow awake. She sputtered on her own drool, a pool of the stringy mucus dampening her embroidered pillow. Shocked to be awake, her tired eyelids blinked over nocturnal, amber eyes.

Minnow laid suspended between awake and asleep, her pajama’d form tucked neatly in a small feather down bed hidden behind a thick oaken bar. The perfectly immaculate establishment that cocooned the scene, the tavern ‘The Other Mine’, was open every hour of the day, even if Minnow was not.

“Graaaah,” Minnow groaned. Dramatically, the woman tucked an arm over her tired eyes and swatted around with her free hand until it pounded against something brass. Lifting her heirloom time clock from its perch, she peeked out from under her arm only to scowl at the time.

“I’ve only been sleeping for two hours,” the words came out groggy and sad.
