Hot dogs are already cooked. Might as well just sear them to add flavor.

If you take college seriously, it opens doors. Harvard and Hopkins makes it easier, but you can do well anywhere.

Prefer to brainstorm on Discord for that reason.

@HeySeuss AHEM.

Yes, I know this is harmless, but inevitably there's a point where we get into flame wars, and I'd rather just ignore the politics entirely- especially since this is the internet and politics on the internet can devolve into a shitshow at any opportunity.

None of that was my political opinion, I actually refrained from stating that. I was trying to outline the inherent social/cultural conflicts present in the RVN as a result of Diem taking power; he was not from the South, and was ruling over that region.

You're good to go on that idea.

Awesome, writing him up now.

Edit: As a thought, the PAVN units most active in this era are the ones sent down to help set up the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the logistics system to get supplies down to the Viet Cong. This becomes increasingly important to the war effort as it is also how troops are moved down it. Starting in 1959, the North Vietnamese government commits to supporting the insurgency in the South as the Ngo Dinh Diem regime makes it abundantly clear that there will be no referendum vote on unification per the 1954 Geneva Accords (distinct from the Geneva Conventions and I still get them confused in terminology) that temporarily partitioned the nation after the French pulled out.

To wit, Diem knew he would lose that vote to Ho Chi Minh and had abundant (but uneasy, because no one really trusted or liked him, and this definitely includes John F. Kennedy and Maxwell Taylor, who are more put off their feed by corruption and venality than, say, LBJ, who said, "Well hell, he's our boy.") support from the French and then the Americans so he decided to give Uncle Ho the finger. He, as a Catholic from the North, had a lot of strong supporters that were recent arrivals from the North who helped form his regime. This, incidentally, was part of the rift between mandarin types that were Catholic and part of the regime, often French speakers, and peasants who were often Buddhists and had grievances accordingly.

There are a lot of frictions in the Republic of Vietnam and Diem has a credibilty problem. His brother Nhu is another powerful figure in there and so is his wife, Madame Nhu, who is considered a huge power player in Saigon politics.
Berthier rifles and Mausers were also things. There were also a number of old jap weapons such as the knee-mortar.

MAT-49s converted to fire tokies were prefered by many VC.
-As body-armor became a thing, the SKS became more prevalent a the NVA started to recieve AKs across all ranks.

The disarray in French weapon supplies in the Indochina War and the various conflicts/suppliers the Viet Minh/PAVN/Vietcong had makes for a real selection of equipment. But if Selune is good with it, I'm going with an old guerrilla with a bolt action something something.

Sort of pointman/marksman?

I think so. An old grizzled Viet Minh that knows the countryside. In my mind, I'm going to say this man fought at Dien Bien Phu.
@Lady Selune How about a local Viet Cong that knows the terrain and is acting as their scout and guide? They're a Northern unit just arriving in the Central Highlands, they might need a grizzled old cuss that fought the Japanese, then the French and now the Americans. A guy in sandals and peasant pajamas with an old Mosin or even a French MAS-36 (or something else entirely.)

Thoughts?

We'll actually be cycling through different characters, so don't worry, Advisors will come into the mix!

I saw 1961 an didn't read further. Are we sticking to PAVN or will there be NLF (Vietcong) Main Force or Local Force elements involved too?
Hello, I want to play a US Advisor. :)
He gave a curt nod to Sirgala, not trusting himself to speak without squeaking. That was the fear talking; this was a much larger fight than anything he'd ever seen. In his world, a scrape consisted of shooting down some beast or exchanging arrows with a bandit before that one got the message and left. This was something else.

Mardion wasn't about to buck orders in this instance, but they had a number of corpses to kill off in the place before he could find vantage and use arrows. When told to go for the heads, he realized that he really didn't have the right tool for the job on that front. An axe would be ideal for splitting heads, but a fireplace poker would do in a pinch. Iron and a spike, perfect for piercing skulls and crushing a head.

He wasn't some sort of warrior god, he took one out as he moved methodically toward what had been guest rooms; charred, burned and with unstable footing, it was still an elevated vantage for an archer. He was used to shooting wolves and other predators off his family's herds, but this was an entirely different affair, and he found himself shaking and his head pounding a bit, his vision tunneling. It was the same was meeting bandits, you tried to master that and use that for the extra sprint in your step or the sudden burst of strength you had in climbing something you had to climb. Later, of course, an older person might pay the price with a limp or sprain.

Besides, he was a good enough hunter, but not really used to combat, he was happy to leave the hacking and chopping to people in armor with heavier weapons who looked ready for it. It took ten or so seconds to string the bow once upon a vantage where he could identify the cultists and another two to nock an arrow. He used cover and concealment, but he was not a thief or some sort of wilderness dwelling ranger that could simply melt into terrain. All the same, he was able to regulate breathing, clear his mind and do what he could, scrambling mentally, to calm himself enough to aim.

He aimed for their center mass, but he did not necessarily expect to land every arrow -- he was accurate, but the target was moving and would be wary after the first shot. He took his time and lined up that first shot, hoping to get one square on. After that, he'd have to settle for providing a distraction for heftier, better armed types to potentially make an assault. If he could just keep them pinned and avoid any return...well return hellfire, lighting, or whatever other magic they put in. He didn't know what his odds were of that or what they could do. He didn't get magic, but if they reacted like bandits, they wouldn't want to necessarily advance when arrows were flying.

He had two quivers with him. He could make those forty arrows useful.

He released.
Well, realistically, it starts with advisors and moves into Marines securing Da Nang. During that time, there's covert action. We can do so much with B. ;)
