I like to RP!

You'll find that I tend to like running games, rather than playing in them.

Okay, submission are closed.

I didn't expect quite this much interest in the game, which has been both pleasantly surprising and also forced me to make the difficult choice of pairing down to a manageable crew. There were a lot of really great submissions, and even if you didn't get picked I'll be keeping those who have applied in mind if any of the chosen players have to drop for some reason.

The final picks are:

Those folk may post their characters in the Characters section.

I have also created a Discord server for the game, kindly join that.

I'll give everyone a day to report in before I kick us off with an IC post.

Thanks!

Answers to setting questions:

  • Technology is near-future for the most part. Basically what we have today but just a bit better. Electronics are smaller and faster, smartphones can fold, public transit is improved and a workable solution for most people.
  • Global communication is still a thing but all connection is done via satellite. Due to no ongoing maintenance and interference from the Nox that blankets the earth said satellite communication can get pretty dodgy sometimes. Communication is thus much easier within a single Sanctum City, and gets slower/more expensive from one city to another.
  • Global population is less than a billion, around 3-4 hundred million sounds like a good number. I'm going to take the easy way out and not give a specific year, but somewhere between 2050-2100.
  • I'll have to add it to the map, but the Imperator sits at the city of Nova Roma near the Black Sea.
  • Notably Nova Lux and the largest military academy in the Imperium are both located in Palmyra. Though this is outside Nova Roma and technically the Imperium's center of power, House Mars control of the city is nominal at best.

Yep, choices will be finalized tomorrow.

I wish I could take everyone, but having to keep track of 12 or so characters is, as noted, a nightmarish prospect. Especially if the plot is going to move forward at anything resembling an acceptable pace. And as this is intended to be a primarily GM-led experience rather than a bunch of people doing their own thing, I think a small group is the best way to go.

I'm giving some thought to running two versions of the game for two separate groups, but I won't make any promises.

here's my application! she's more of a anti-hero than a righteous magical girl but i wanted to try and see if this character may get accepted into this rp anyway ^_^ hope you like!

Thanks for your submission, Astrelle looks good so far.
Hey! I'm interested in joining but I'm not sure which element I feel like choosing yet — is it fine to choose one that other characters already have or do you have a preference for the leftover elements to be used?

Sure, you can have the same element as another character. Shouldn't be a problem. Just remember the deadline is Wednesday!

Character stuff:

YOUSEEBIGGIRL

She large. No problems here!

@Inedible Here is my submission to the competition, hope you like her!

Sadie also looks pretty good, thanks!
You know what, call me interested. Are the entirety of the Sanctum Cities urban, or do the fields cover some less-developed terrain such as, for example, very forested mountains?

I missed this question too, my bad. To answer: Mostly urban. There's some agriculture on the ring, but it's not really 'countryside'. Most of the available land is used and built on, so no very forested areas.
Whew, we've got a lot of magical girls. I'm probably not going to be able to take everyone, but I like all the submissions so far.

I'm going to walk back my earlier statement and close a bit earlier than planned. All submissions will be due by Wednesday the 14th. I'll pick 4-5 from that group.

That said, on to the ones I've missed so far:

Sorry I missed this the first time, this looks good to me.

There we go.

Another fire user! That's fine, and this looks good.

I figured we'd get a noble or two, so that's good. Aether isn't an element I expected, but I think it'll work. I like it!

Hopefully this works and doesn't step on any toes, especially for the people who are still writing their CSs.

And here's the other noble. This also looks pretty good, nothing to correct.
Re-write for Penny looks good, don't see anything that needs to be changed there.

OK ok ok, I wasn't happy with my first Minako pass either. I made another one, let me know what you think.

I think this works better, yep.

This all looks pretty good as well!
Glad to see submissions coming in! I'm thinking I'll let recruitment continue for this coming week and then we can see about getting started.

Edit: I'll get a look at the ones just recently posted/reposted in a few hours!

Character Sheet up!

Penny seems good! The only thing I should note is that magical weapons generally manifest as part of your transformation.

That said I think I'd be fine making an exception and letting Penny using Grand Eisen as her weapon. It'd just be that it becomes far more effective in her transformed state. Untransformed she could still use it to help her channel her magic, but she'd run out of juice pretty quickly.

Also looking good!

Various answers:

@Inedible just for the record, what exactly are the Six that founded the NOI? Separate entity from the Duodecim, right?

Whoops, that's from an old draft. It should be the Twelve, who the Duodecim families consider their originators. I'll fix it!

@Inedible
How fleshed out are the individual sanctums in your view of the universe? Reason I ask is primarily wondering how much freedom/lewee we have to shape the sanctums when drafting a character, assuming of course nothing is contradictory to what someone else has already done.

EDIT: Also are we allowed to have characters that are a part of a Duodecim family?

It's perfectly fine if you want to make up some details about whatever city you choose.

Likewise you can also be from a Duodecim family and make up details about them.

@Inedible
What are the names of the Jupiter cities? I'm not sure if they were left off or if I'm just not able to read them on that map

I forgot to name them! I've fixed the map, they are now respectively Danaster (North) and Norba (South).

Sorry it took a bit, here's some replies:

Okay here she is. Let me know what you think of my take on DARKNESS INCARNATE.

Whew, this is a lot. I think it's workable, but I'd like you to maybe dial things back a bit. Right now you're opiate addicted self-educated nihilist anarchist drug kingpin. That's an impressive list of things to be for a 16 year old girl.

I don't mind if you want to be a delinquent, or even have done drugs, but I think being the druglord of your anarchist collective is a bit too much. I'm looking for something a little more mundane.

Looking good! I like it.

@Inedible Is there room for another player? I really like what I've read so far.

Yep! We're still actively recruiting, so you're welcome to post up a concept.

Nice. Looking forwards to this.

EDIT: Okay, so a few questions.

So humanity is limited to the 23 cities, no small townships or villages. Are those globally distributed, or focused in one region/continent? Can there be cultural differences between them (for instance a Middle Eastern Sanctum City would be more Arabian/Persian in style while a German one would be more Gothic) Is there some range to the society there, or are they all basically arcologies? Meaning can there be a relatively "country folk" ring around the cities, basically consisting of those who would otherwise be townsfolk and villagers? How's the class system in the Sanctum Cities?

By "restricted use", would that mean any can operate magitech, but few can actually take it apart for maintenance/repair/etc...? Will you be explaining the magic system more when the thread starts up?

Can a character still be (at least at the start) an optimistic, cheerful person?

And most importantly... will our school uniforms and magic girl outfits be the same? :P

A lot of these questions are answered in the OOC thread, so please take a look there for some more information.

To answer: The cities are located around the globe, there are cultural differences between them. They are all arcologies, there's not really 'country folk', but there are farmers and agriculture people. There are poor and rich, the richest being the Duodecim family that runs the Sanctum City in question.

Restricted use means that only the Imperium has access to magitech weapons, vehicles, and other devices. Airships, rail lines, Nox regulators, all of them fall under the Imperium's jurisdiction. You're not going to find magitech farming equipment or cars or whatever.

Having a cheerful and optimistic character is fine. It's even preferable. There's nothing wrong with having a simple background.

And no, school uniforms are different from magical transformations.
This looks fun, count me in.

Just a question. Would the weaponry be traditional magic girl weapons, or can it have moving mechanical parts? Mostly trying to decide whether to go for a straight traditional magic girl, a goth girl with revolvers, or a mechanically-savvy girl with a powerhammer.

They can have moving mechanical parts, yes. Guns are fine, as are rocket hammers or stuff like that.
