So...uh...a bit of...hard times, so to speak....going to be busy somewhat....or might just disappear from the face of the earth....uh..yeah....may be around, may not be.....
And you happen to have one built into your mech? It can't protect the entire machine, only certain internal parts. So unless you have a very special kind of shield built into your armour, bad luck?
If Faraday cages were that easy to employ, every modern vehicle would have one. And while modern cars do act as Faraday cages, they still get shut down by EMP :P
No, it's just that you didn't mention that as a counter measure against EMP. I was like, "Nuuuuu! He forgot about Faraday Cages!!!!!!"
"I could always try things normally...but that's so simple and repetitive! I wanna try something nobody ever does!"
Height: 5'4" Weight: 46kg Hair Color: Blonde(Strawberry Pink at the ends) Eye Color: Blue Name: Angelina 'Lina' Jackson Age: 15 History: Angelina, an American born girl, was born to a scholarly family, with her parents being professors at a university. However, unlike her scholarly parents, Angelina was more of the out-going, adventurous type, preferring to work hard when no one seemingly notices. However, the fact that the world was almost decided through the Deep Ground Program, and that there was a school directly connected to it, Lina's parents sent her off the Purple Crown Academy alone, albeit reluctantly.
However, thanks to luck on landing a job serving at an Internet cafe, Lina managed to keep herself supported, and thus settled down a bit into her new life. But, the seemingly easy-going but routine lifestyle slightly bored Lina, which would be the reason why she started looking for trouble. More accurately, she started spending time within DGO, at first deliberately wandering into predictable ambush points, to finding Outlaws to fight against. It was around this time that she chanced upon the information of Sweepers. Finding the task they were rumored to do intriguing, Lina decided to try her hand at it. After all, it was only rumors, so perhaps her efforts would be tossed up in the air as so. Personality: Flighty and whimsical, many would find Lina somewhat hard to label properly. At times she may be extremely quiet and observant, carefully noting and remembering little details. At others, she may be childish, innocent and thoughts befitting her age. And even occasionally, manipulative and cautious. The best anyone could compare her, would be to put her side by side with a cat, and say 'See? They're the same!'. Moves utterly on a whim. However, whimsical does not mean unreliable. Lina extremely values unorthodox methods, and smoothly hides evidence of her efforts under the table, allowing somebody else to take the glory.
Viewed as a loose cannon by fellow Cleaners and Erasers for a multitude of reasons. One is that Lina will sometimes allow a known hacker/troll to 'slip' from her grasp. She does so with the thought of using them as a lure to catch a bigger prey. Another, would be that she operates on an extremely wide base, overlapping into another Eraser's turf far too often, along with acting as a Cleaner for her own catches.
Those that know Lina very well, might mention that she seems to have slight self-destructive tendencies. Taking the blame and the fall for someone else, especially her close friends is rather common, with 'Let those who are prepared take the fall' as her vague reason. Easily accepting blame while denying praise(although petting/hugging her is a different story).
Unlike most, her personality doesn't change even slightly as Leviathan. In one battle she might be firing from long ranges with a rifle, at others burrowed underground, and then even sometimes found in the midst of battle, firing at near point-blank ranges with handguns.
Also, pet/hug her. Or give her a lap pillow. Or even a piggy-back. Or use her as a hug pillow. For odd reasons, she seems to enjoy these unusual actions.
Avatar Class: Rogue(Ranger) Avatar Title: Leviathan Avatar Level (Initial): 3 Avatar Guild: Sweeper, although officially a mercenaric guild-less player Avatar Abilities: Armory Expansion(active): A mobile storage that appears from nowhere. While any item is stored inside the inventory do not affect the user with their weight, there is a three second delay in opening/closing the storage. Also, while opened, the user's movement speed is reduced by 80%. Emergency Ejection(active): Empties the entirety of the mobile storage on top of the user in less than a second. Defense is increased in proportion to total weight of items piled on the user. However, user is immobile until dug out. Burrow(active): Hides the user underground after a set period of 'warm-up'. If given half a second, the user is hidden, immobile, and unable to attack. If given thirty seconds however, the user is hidden and immobile. Defense is increased up to 20%, depending on surrounding materials, and the user can attack. Avatar Feats: Armor Piercing: Ranged Attacks ignore 10% of Defense Other: Its easier to dig from the outside than from the inside. Please don't leave Levi-chan behind!
Something that may be rather problematic for her, is that she answers to 'Levi' just as easily as she would to 'Lina'. This also transmits outside of DGO, where she will still answer to her IGN.
And yes, real world EMP can indeed permanently damage equipment until you replace the electronics, but given that we are in the future, you have plot armour, and technology has advanced, it's not unfeasible to have it merely shut down stuff for a while. Heck, you can shield from EMP in modern times, either with a massive capacitor or a set of shielded electronics.
You're forgetting the simplicity of Faraday Cages~
Well, somewhere in your earlier paragraphs I saw Ackerman mention something about Maki disappearing back inside her cockpit... So...
Ah well.
As someone who's actually been in an AFV, I can tell you that we don't usually carry anything more than a jumpstart cables and simple everyday wrenches and the like. So overloading circuits with an EMP usually means nothing can be repaired. Especially since I wasn't sure if we're going by the usual video game/pop culture EMP. To my knowledge, overloading circuits like that usually damages complex equipment for good.
Any foil/copper wrapped cable may be working still, along with the reactor. At the very least, a PD weapon can be worked. Pretty sure the only thing viable would be kinetics, reactor(pretty sure no one wants to risk unprotected reactors), and most likely the cables connected to the reactor. Just jury-rig the reactor into a bomb and you're good to go :3!
You were out of the machine when they loaded you in, so yes, I used that explicit exit from it.
The winching out of the water was working on the assumption you didn't extract Trapp's machine completely out of the lake, but left it at a safe 'depth' so that he was above water. They removed the mechs from the lake completely.
The hellcat power down I noted, but didn't mention. Distress beacons on stealth mode are all fine by me, and I wasn't using that in my post. I did use the following two assumptions, logical from the perspective of an enemy pilot:
There is no such thing as an untraceable signal. I may not know what it is, but I can pick up a scrambled, jutted or fractured signal by catching everything in the area. Given that I can filter the traffic from the Coalition team, I will still have some odd nonsensical traffic left (your stealthed radio signal). I can't read it, but I know it's there. Hence, the logical thing would to be to shut it down to prevent any communication, no?
An enemy pilot will do whatever they can to make escape or rescue easier, right? So it's trivial to assume that they may have something that will enable them to turn their mech into a beacon, broadcast an SOS, send out scrambling signals and so on. Wouldn't a smart opponent take measures to prevent such a thing?
I'd have EMPd your machines regardless of any outgoing traffic, simply to prevent you from using it against me at any point. The fact that it most likely shuts down any help broadcasts is a plus.
The EMP doesn't kill your mech, especially since it is shut down. Plot armour dictates that your machine is simply out of commission for a while before the circuits return to normal and bleed the excess charge. It has no permanent effect on the mech and should wear off in a few hours. An EMP of that size wouldn't be able to completely kill anything big anyway.
Was I not explicit enough, or am I playing too smart/stupid?
Be glad it was Maki's machine that you EMP'ed. If you hit Yuu's MAS, she would've started going through the apartment, ignoring the guns trained on her, while complaining/lecturing to most likely surprised Coalition soldiers about the different ways to shut down a machine without incurring as much damage, how to take care of the MAS, and the likely defense against different methods.
Oh gawd, what would happen if the Coalition captured Yuu....the amount of changes she would cause in the R&D 0.o
EDIT: On second thought....she might also be curled up on the ground clutching her left eye, if in the vicinity of an EMP
