The worst thing about mental illness is you have to look after yourself a disgusting amount. I know it's the only way to actually be in a fit state to look out for others, but it still feels wrong.

Judging by the Internet's definitions of introversion and extraversion, you'd think everyone's either an extreme hermit or a party animal with no in between.

Bio

A frazzled British thirtysomething cat mum with something of a tea addiction.

I like a wide range of RP genres, but have two absolute favourites: Pokemon and magical girls. (If someone manages to combine the two, I'll be VERY happy!) I post fairly regularly, but sometimes shit mental health days crop up - if that causes any delays, I'll try to resume posting ASAP.

"Well, finding him's not gonna be any trouble."

Outwardly, Grace kept up an air of snarky composure, glowering into the distance at Andre and his flock of screaming fans. Inwardly... Well, that was a different story. She'd thought herself emotionally prepared for the reunion, but nostalgia hit harder than she'd expected. She edged forward and stopped at a street corner, peering round, ribs clenching at the sight of her former friends.

Ember, at least, didn't seem to have changed much, or so Grace hoped. Kairi, on the other hand... It took a moment to recognise her. The girl who'd once been so full of life now gave off a quiet, gloomy air. She hadn't started trying to be cool and edgy, had she? Grace bit her lip. Matt, Regis, Saint... She knew none of them would be exactly as she remembered. And Andre. With a pang, she watched him greet Ember and Saint with kisses, and hand out roses. Andre, who'd accepted her into his group of friends, making her no longer an outcast. Andre, who'd made so many people feel welcome. Andre, who'd gone and ditched them all, and only just now remembered they existed.

"Pory?" Beside her, Vertex floated up for a better look at the group.

Grace sighed. "The guy's getting enough attention as it is, but we might as well get the meet and greet over with." Beckoning Vertex back to her side, she pet them on the head, taking a Lumiose galette out of her bag and nibbling at it. She knew all these sugary snacks were unhealthy, but they helped in stressful situations. Not that she had any reason to be stressed! She wasn't that snivelling wimp who cared what people thought, or put too much stock in friendships, any more.

With a deep breath, she strode up to Andre. "Hey. Sure has been a while, hasn't it?" She accompanied her frosty tone with a glare. If she was souring the mood, so be it.

"Ow!" She pulled back as Vertex gave her a harsh tap on the shoulder with their nose. The Porygon approached Andre, tilting forward and giving him a much gentler shoulder boop, more visibly eager than their trainer was to hang out with these people.
I feel like I'm a member of the Kalos loser's club.

Grace is proud to be in that club. Despite both of them being aloof and socially awkward, I feel Regis and Grace might actually get along ok.
@xXSINXx Yep, I'm good with that! Grace is pretty different from her past self too.
@Crimson Flame Thanks! I can see Grace as a foil of sorts to Andre.
Name: Grace Pascal

Gender: Female

Age: 18

Appearance:

In a region known for style, Grace's unkempt appearance ironically makes her stand out. Small and slight, with unassuming features, round glasses and messy dark green pigtails, she cultivates the nerdy bookworm look, wearing high-necked blouses, baggy cardigans and simple skirts. If the colours and patterns don't match, ehh, who cares? She's got better things to do than fret over the latest fashions. She typically carries herself with more confidence than you'd expect, although sometimes her wistful side will show when she lets her guard down.

Personality: If Grace could describe herself in one word, it would be unapologetic. She strives to be the opposite of the popular, stuck up, image obsessed Lumiosians she's known - without acknowledging this can make her just as judgmental and arrogant as they are. She prides herself on her achievements, academic skills and independence, using this sense of superiority as a defense mechanism. Rarely will she admit to her own mistakes. Basically, she thinks she's more mature than she is.

While her abrasiveness doesn't make her many friends, she doesn't care, or at least she says she doesn't. She thinks most friendships between humans are fake and fickle, and only Pokemon are trustworthy. Besides, she's more focused on web design/graphic design. However, she does often find herself reminiscing about her former friends from long ago.

History: Grace grew up in Lumiose to a Pokeball engineer mother and a freelance artist father, who both nurtured her creative and intellectual side. To ensure she got a good education, they enrolled her at the best school they could find. While balancing studies with a social life wasn't easy, and the shy, awkward personality she had back then didn't help, she was lucky enough to meet some good friends who accepted her into their group.

For a short while, they were happy and carefree, however that wasn't to last. One close friend, Andre, as the son of two movie stars, quit to pursue his own acting career. She tried to hold on to those who were still around, but the teenage years changed things, and others' life events started getting in the way of their former bonds. She'd have become completely withdrawn if not for a group of girls who took pity on her.

At first, she got along well with the confident and charismatic ringleader Camille. Sadly, Camille and the others turned out to be the kinds of people who built others up only to tear them down. Their interests changed to gossip, skipping school, and other risque behaviour expected by their peers. Grace would hear them trash talking her outfits behind her back. When she confronted Camille about it one day, her so called friend later responded by stealing her phone, showing everyone the "outdated and geeky" games on it. She spread rumours about her, and blabbed secrets Grace had confided. The bullying got so bad, Grace was eventually moved to a different school.

From then on, she decided to become the antithesis of the snobs who'd screwed her over so badly. She gave up on anything remotely fashionable and deliberately cultivated a bookish look. She glared at people from over textbooks if they laughed at her, and sometimes even if they didn't. She made no secret of her interests. Her attitude was "you all may be obsessed with the latest phones, but some day I'll be the one making the apps". Not wanting to risk betrayal again, she stayed at arms length from most people. She kept vaguely in touch with some others from Andre's group, but over time lost contact as it became clear they'd drifted apart. To cope with isolation, she threw herself into studies, as well as her hobbies of programming and digital art.

That her standoffish attitude concealed loneliness wasn't lost on her parents. On the day Grace turned sixteen, her mother gave her a Pokeball containing a Porygon. Grace and the Porygon, Vertex, became inseparable over the next two years. It was during those years that Grace considered becoming an official trainer, to prove her skill. To herself, that was! She was above caring what others thought, wasn't she?

The opportunity presented itself in an unexpected way when a letter came through the mail. Reading it brought a swell of anger. Andre, who'd abandoned her and the others for his fifteen minutes of fame, now had the nerve to invite her on a Pokemon journey? She had a good mind to refuse, and go it alone.

Instead, she ended up at Vaniville, not knowing what had gotten into her and only hoping she didn't regret it.

Other: Secretly a fan of Pokestar Studios movies. While she'd never admit to liking something so mainstream, instead claiming it's to "study special effects" or "compare them to the books" if anyone finds out, deep down she does admire talented actors. And the movies starring Andre make her nostalgic every time.

Nickname: Vertex
Species: Porygon
Gender: None
Personality: Smart and curious, Vertex loves to learn about the world, and meet others be they human or Pokemon. They're particularly interested in digital devices, and like to explore them in data form, sometimes accidentally corrupting files in the process.
History: Gifted to Grace on her 16th birthday by her mother, Vertex has since then provided as much emotional support as their limited programming can bring.
Other: The whites of their eyes are light blue.
@Crimson Flame Yep I'm good with Kalos!

When the camera cut, Mara gave a huge sigh of relief. Shuffling back in the line, she glared at the camera crew and the volunteers. The staff could have said this would happen, instead of springing it on everyone like that. "Never a dull moment," she muttered to nobody in particular.

That trend showed no sign of stopping. The bearded guy from earlier clearly hadn't learned his lesson, sniffing at a woman in the crew, trying to impress her with his claim of dog powers. Predictably, the first thing the woman did was make a swift exit. Mara groaned, wondering what essence the guy would try - and inevitably fail - to convince everyone he had next.

She took another step back as he started heading her way, no doubt picking up on the smell of lemon. He hadn't found the source just yet, but it would only be a matter of time until he did, and Mara grimaced at the thought of being on the receiving end of that terrible flirting attempt. Before it could happen, she faced him, glowering. "Funny. Didn't you have ivy powers a few minutes ago?"

No sooner had she said it than childhood memories surfaced, accompanied by a spike of guilt. Stumbling around a dark room, convincing herself she had feline night vision. Sneaking to retrieve toys her siblings had stolen from her, wishing she had the cunning of a fox. That hope, followed by disappointment, whenever she dreamed of an animal. Sure, she'd been a kid back then, but maybe she wasn't one to judge.
Interested! When you say a group of friends, do they already know each other, or do they meet for the first time in the starting town? Because I don't think I've seen the former before in a Pokemon RP.

As Oscar pet Skoll, the corners of Sophia's mouth twitched upwards. At his retort, however, she rolled her eyes. Typical. Of course he'd take any opportunity to go and lecture her.

"Can you take a second to look at yourself and see that you are as much an enemy to yourself than team noble is."

Lacey looked up at Sophia, face solemn, and nodded to back up Oscar's words. Sophia's eyes widened. "Look, both of you, please understand," she urged. "One, I truly am ok, and two, how does anyone even get anywhere without pushing themselves? Especially someone like me." She crouched to pet Lacey, only to groan and fall to her knees, eyes scrunched shut. Her head pounded like someone had taken a sledgehammer to it. Through the haze of pain, she heard Lacey squeal, felt the little Gothita hug her.

She gave Lacey a reassuring cuddle before looking up at Oscar. "And about having your Pokemon, I know. I know you look out for each other. But what about other trainers and their teams? All of us, our Pokemon working together..." Staggering to her feet, she folded her arms. "Not that I'm here to make friends, of course! Just talking about the practicalities."

Even as she said that, something stirred in her at the thought of camaraderie. No, she reminded herself, she was here to outdo the others, not get close to them... wasn't she?

"Anyway." She turned her attention to Saki. "I wasn't able to do much for him either..." Her shoulders slumped. Not only had she failed as a psychic, she'd failed Rheese, which was much worse. "That effect's really a force to be reckoned with. But I did get a few glimpses. There was a woman with some kind of insignia on her coat, I didn't clearly see her face, but I think she mentioned Mew? And there was a Pokemon, a yellow and grey one with a red gem on its forehead... Seemed pretty desperate, as if begging for help. Do you know of a Pokemon who fits that description?"
