Have I set a thousand dominoes tumbling? I do hope so.
Sadly, our Lex has had to step away from the game due to some real life issues.

I guess, for the sake of the game, I ought to step up to the mark then: I'm going to drop the Fantastic Four.

The New Frontier: DC/Marvel One Universe RP application:

Alexander “Lex” Luthor, Jr.
Neutral Evil.
Justice League of America, LexCorp.

"The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind." -- Gordon Gekko.

History:

Lex Luthor was the most powerful man in America, more powerful even than the President some would have you believe, until he arrived. Superman. The caped wonder that had saved Robert Kelly’s life and declared America’s Mutant Registration Act as unjust and in contradiction to America’s proud history of tolerance and acceptance. In that moment Lex knew he had to tame the Superman or destroy him and set into motion the events would lead to the creation of the Justice League of America. After Superman rejected a personal invitation from Lex himself to lead the JLA and answer to him personally, Luthor spent millions unearthing superheroes of his own that might eclipse Superman in America’s hearts. In Captain America and Thor he found the leadership and strength that the Justice League needed. Within months, Luthor’s new Justice League was the talk of the town and Superman had found himself on the outside looking in.

Several years have passed since the formation of the Justice League and more and more Lex finds his hatred for Superman waning. He lusts for a confrontation with the so-called Superman, for his Justice League to humble him, but at the back of his mind Luthor has acquired a begrudging enjoyment of the adoration his Justice League has earned him. Once hated, treated with suspicion, Luthor is finally popular and a part of him fears that his charade, already extended much longer than he initially tended, might be permanent.

Supporting Cast:

Captain America – Steve Rogers leads Luthor’s Justice League of America. The two men have worked closely in recent years and have developed a friendly relationship – Lex is taken aback by the Super Soldier’s intelligence, having at first considered him a dolt, and often turns to Rogers for advice. From the outside some might even consider Rogers to be a good influence on Lex.

Thor – The powerhouse of Luthor’s Justice League of America. Thor is fiercely loyal to Lex. LexCorp scientists discovered Mjolnir in New Mexico and helped Thor transition into life in Midgard. When not working with the Justice League or otherwise disposed, Thor works as Lex's personal bodyguard at some of the business meetings with his less savoury clients.

Black Widow - Black Widow handles the Justice League's dirty jobs. Her background and skills make her perfect for corporate espionage and Lex makes use of Natasha (to the benefit of LexCorp) in this regard often. Of all the members of the League she is the member Lex trusts the least but simultaneously has proven to be the most useful.

Amanda Waller - Director of SHIELD. Lex and the Justice League of America work with SHIELD often and despite her initial distrust of Lex and his methods she considers him to be a valuable asset in the fight against mutant terrorism. Lex has friends in powerful places that have helped Waller secure her place within SHIELD after Nick Fury's acrimonious resignation from the organisation.

Nick Fury - Former Director of SHIELD that resigned in disgrace after the disappearance of Reed Richards and his crew. Fury was deeply suspicious of Lex and had long tasked SHIELD to look into his activities, especially his business interests in places like Latveria and Kahndaq, so Fury's resignation came as welcome news to Lex. Luthor suspects the old war horse is still out there plotting against him despite the success of his Justice League.

Tony Stark - CEO of Stark Industries and one of Lex's lifelong rivals. Lex resents Tony for his having been born into privilege. Before Stark changed his stripes, he would treat Lex with disdain for having grown up in Suicide Slums and his insults have stayed with Lex to this day.

Bruce Banner - Former LexCorp employee that as a result of direct pressure placed onto him from Lex turned himself into the Hulk. Lex considers the Hulk's strength to have been "stolen" from him, considering the Hulk persona LexCorp technology given it was produced in his labs, and often sends the Justice League after the Hulk. Publicly his rationale is that the Hulk is dangerous - privately he covets the Hulk's immense strength.

How (if at all) does the New Frontier version of your character differ from the original?:

Up until the second Superman reveals himself to the world Lex is exactly the same as mainstream Lex. In the New Frontier universe the rejection he faces at Superman's hands leads him to form a super team of his own in order to outshine Superman. For the most part, given the Justice League's close cooperation with the government in the fight against mutant terrorists, he has achieved this goal. Perhaps his domination of Superman in this respect has made him complacent, sloppy even, and having worked beside Captain America he sometimes finds himself feeling... positively heroic. It's an impulse he's in denial about but one, I hope, that might make for interesting reading down the line.

Sample:

LexCorp Tower
Metropolis

Lex stood in the lobby of the Justice League’s headquarters in LexCorp Tower with a glass of whiskey in hand. It had been a long evening. The Wrecking Crew had attacked a bank in downtown Metropolis and taken nearly twenty hostages. Thor was in Asgard dealing with some so-called “unfinished business” and the Justice League had been shorthanded. Eventually Captain America and Black Widow had managed to get control of the situation and the Wrecking Crew were apprehended without major casualties. All the same Lex had been worried there for a minute. His team had yet to come up short but he was concerned what would happen when they did. He couldn’t afford the people of Metropolis turning to Superman in their hour of need.

The sound of feet scuffing along the marble floors alerted Lex to the presence of somebody else in the lobby and stood by the doorway was Steve Rogers. His cowl was down but his uniform was still on. The legendary red, white, and blue shield was slung over his back and for the first time since Lex had met the Captain he seemed tired.

“Lex,” Rogers asked as he wandered over to him. “Can I ask you a question?”

Lex smiled.

“Ask away, Captain.”

“Why do you hate him so much?”

Luthor knew straight away which him Rogers was talking about.

“I don’t hate him,” Luthor said as he took a mouthful of whiskey and grimaced. “I hate what he could be. He’s powerful enough that he could kill us all and we would be powerless to stop him. How is a person meant to feel safe sharing a world with someone – something – like that? How do you go to bed at night knowing you draw breath only because men like him allow it?”

“You could same the same of Thor,” Rogers said as his piercing blue eyes delved deep into Lex’s soul. “Or even the Flash.”

“You could,” Lex shrugged. “But Thor is a warrior, Captain, and the Flash is a superhero. Neither of them pretend to be anything more. This Man of Steel? This Superman? He thinks he’s a god amongst men. He holds himself up as an example to the world, looking down on all those that see the world differently than he does, without a care for whether he might be wrong. A man like that, super or not, is dangerous to us all.”

Luthor could see in the Captain’s eyes that he wasn’t wholly convinced. Only Thor truly shared Lex’s dislike for Superman but that seemed to be for entirely different reasons. Nonetheless Lex was sure that eventually time would vindicate him. All it would take was one very bad day and the Superman would do something that would make them all see that Lex was right. They’d thank him then, they’d hold him up as a prophet, and when his Justice League was sent to bring Superman in Luthor would be the one that slapped the chains on him. He’d make sure of that.

In the inside pocket of his suit Lex felt the buzz of a phone ringing and reached for it with a groan. He scanned the name on the screen and then looked to Rogers with a smile.

“Do you mind, Captain? I have to take this.”

Steve nodded.

“Of course.”

Lex watched as Captain America wandered out of the room and shut the doors behind him. He gave it several more seconds and wandered over to the lobby’s large windows before pressing the phone against his head.

“Victor,” Luthor smiled. “I presume you’re calling about the vibranium?”
I'm thinking about dropping the Fantastic Four.

It's not that I don't enjoy writing them, because I have enjoyed what I've written so far, but that I realise that I don't really have anything long term planned for them. I'll be playing them post to post, waiting for some lightning bolt-shaped inspiration to come along, when someone else (potentially) could be playing them.

I don't know who else I'd pick up in their place but I wanted to make it known where I was at (or not at, more accurately) with them just in case someone was sat wishing they could play them.

The LexCorp Building, Metropolis

Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen were some fifty or sixty paces from the LexCorp building before Kent pulled his colleague aside. It had been a good twenty-five minutes since they had left the Planet and Jimmy had been deathly silent the whole time. Clark had tried to convince Perry that taking Jimmy with him might not have been the best idea but White had insisted. He’d seen on Olsen’s face the moment he told him they were going to the LexCorp building that he was far from pleased. He’d hoped that on the journey over he might have come to terms with it but it was clear that hadn’t happen. Stood under the shade of the LexCorp building Clark let out a sigh as he gestured to Jimmy to take a seat on the bench beside them. They were already running late but Clark figured it was better they were late and Olsen was on side than the young photographer putting his foot in his mouth once they were with Lex.

"What’s wrong, Jimmy?"

Jimmy pouted a little as he played with the camera in his hands.

"It’s nothing."

Clark smiled sympathetically.

"Something’s bugging you. I’ve never seen you so quiet before. You’ve barely said a word the entire walk here. So either you’ve lost your voice or something is bothering you. I might not be much of a betting man but I’m pretty sure it’s the first one."

Jimmy let the camera in his hands go loose and it flopped against his chest. He leant back against the bench and let out a defeated sigh as he eyed the LexCorp building.

"This feels wrong, Clark. We’re not here to write a story or ask questions, we’re here so that Luthor can announce his latest pet project. That’s not news. That’s public relations. Maybe I’m being a little drastic here but this isn’t the kind of thing the Planet ought to be doing."

"What makes you say that?"

There was an uncharacteristic heaviness to Jimmy’s voice. Usually the photographer was cheerful to a fault. Clark had never seen someone take a shellacking from Perry and walk away before he’d met Olsen. It was clear that Jimmy’s reservations about LexCorp were deeply held, maybe even more deeply held than Clark’s were, and the grave look on the photographer’s face reflected that.

"You remember that expose by Ben Ulrich in the Bugle a few years ago? About LexCorp’s gunrunning across central Europe, in Latveria, and in the Middle East? To this day Luthor has never had to account for that. We could ask him about it, Clark. You could ask him about it. Even a “no comment” would count for something, right? It would have to."

Every fiber of Clark’s being agreed with Olsen but he knew it would get them nowhere. For the past half decade he had tried, both in the cape and out of it, to get something to stick to Lex to no avail. He’d even made some traction before Lex created the Justice League. Since then he’d not been able to lay a glove on Luthor or LexCorp.

"That’s not what we’re here for, Jimmy."

Jimmy shook his head with frustration.

"Well, it should be."

"Look, one day Lex Luthor will have to account for all of his misdeeds, I promise you that much, but if I press him on the Latverians we’ll be thrown out in under a minute. Not only that, both of us will be blacklisted before the day is out and the Planet will never get another LexCorp or Justice League scoop again."

Olsen shrugged.

"So what? We should stay quiet because of our… careers? Is that what you’re saying? We should roll over and let Luthor tickle our bellies so the Planet can get first dibs on the next Justice Leaguer?"

"I’m saying we’re only two men, Jimmy, and Lex Luthor is still Lex Luthor."

Jimmy sighed and stared off into the horizon wistfully for a few moments. His eyes glazed over a little as if he were trying to recall something from the back of his mind. He shook his head to himself slightly as he drew a blank and looked to Clark pensively as he tried to piece together the quote that was on the tip of his tongue.

"What was it that Superman said at President Kelly’s inauguration? All it takes is one good man to speak out against inj-"

Partly out of embarrassment Clark interrupted Jimmy.

"Neither of us is Superman. Are you bulletproof? Can you leap a tall building in a single bound? Because last time I checked, neither of us could do that."

"That doesn’t mean we have to do nothing."

Clark rubbed his chin a little as he thought over the implications of going after Lex in their interview. Every single way he played it out in his head it ended badly for them. It wasn’t so much himself that Clark was concerned about but Olsen. Jimmy’s career was in the ascendency after having captured that picture of Clark and Captain America together and being involved in something like this could put an end to that. Clark wasn’t sure he could have that on his conscience. Charging in without a plan, without having thought things through, would be disastrous for everyone involved. If they were going to get Lex they were going to have to play the long game. And Clark was determined to get him eventually.

He looked to Jimmy and smiled.

"We’re not going to. We’re going to bide our time, make Luthor think we’re his best friends, make sure next time he has a story he needs broken or the next event he holds we are the first name on the lists. We’re going to get close enough to him that one day, maybe months or years from now, he’s going to let the mask slip. Then and only then are we going to make our move. Not now, not some soft ball that Luthor can knock out of the park without breaking a sweat, but a haymaker that will send him to the mat so hard he never gets up again."

The disappointment on Olsen’s boyish face disappeared and in its place appeared a smile that managed to seem both shocked and impressed at the same time.

"Jesus, Clark, remind me never to get on your bad side."

Clark let out a laugh, stood up from the bench, and gestured towards the LexCorp building with a smile.

"Now what say we head on inside? We’re already running late. I can’t imagine Luthor is the kind of man that likes to be kept waiting."

The pair of Daily Planet employees climbed up the steps of the LexCorp building and were greeted by a red-haired young woman. She lead them to a special lift that bore only two buttons – “L” for Luthor and “W” for Watchtower. A red-nailed finger clicked on the “L” button and they rode to Luthor’s office in silence. The doors slid openly slowly to reveal not the army of publicists, public relations, and marketing people that Clark had expected, but Lex Luthor, dressed in a plain suit, stood before the window of his office with the setting Sun behind him. His thin lips pursed into a wry smile as he spotted them and they stepped inside.

I call for a vote of no confidence in TimeMasterX's Doom.

It's a cruel ruse I tell you!

More than anything, it's an awful piece of expectations management.

If you spend three weeks hyping up a single post, I expect that post to be Earth-shatteringly good. Anything less than that is going to be considered a disappointment.

So yeah, no pressure, Time.

@TimeMasterX About time.
Not all people of colour are the same and neither are all women. So if there are people out there that want to play a character but are afraid they won't sound "black" enough or that the female character they are writing sounds too "man-ish" I'd suggest they chill. Chances are you're probably worrying too much. Even if it is for the most benevolent reason possible.

Shakespeare never left England and you never hear people complaining that his Danish, Roman, or Venetian characters weren't authentic enough.
I wrote a whole 1x1 with Byrd set in a small town in South Carolina despite having never stepped foot there.

Y'all motherfuckers are overcomplicating things. People be people, yo.

@Lord Wraith What's wrong, Wraith? You worried you're not "hip" enough to play a brother?
@Lord Wraith Ersatz and Dawkins respectively, IIRC. I'm not sure we ever saw a Wolverine post from EE and Dawkins definitely posted once (maybe twice?) but I've not seen him around since.
