Appearance:
From a glance, one can tell that Ms. Lovell is rather conscious about her appearance. Be it her choice in clothing, the way she styles her hair, or even the way she rests her face or body, every single action is chosen deliberately and carefully in order to craft the appropriate persona for the situation at hand.
She keeps her wavy blonde hair above her shoulders, parted on the left and tucked behind her left ear. Two cold, blue eyes peer out from her pale and freckled skin. The telltale sign of one who works indoors far too much...or under the plate. Her limbs are long and thin. Her nails are kept short and neat. Plain.
For streetwear, Maddie prefers simplicity. Tee shirts, either plain or minimal design, and pants. Nothing to restrict movement too much. Nothing too flashy. The more invisible she can become, the better. Practicality is paramount for survival.
Her standard uniform, when required to wear it, consists of a black unisex business suit, white shirt, black tie, and black shoes. While some of her colleagues tend to accessorize or take certain liberties with the dress code, Maddie follows it to the letter. Nothing more, nothing less.
Her lab uniform only really requires a lab coat under which she tends to wear simple blouses in muted colors. With this, she’ll often either wear darker pants or even a skirt. She wears pins of both a chocobo and a moogle on her lapel above her ID card.
Personality:
Most who meet Maddie would agree that she’s a very polite young woman. She laughs at the right time, asks the right questions. She comes across as very personable and charming, though she doesn’t make much of an impact. Most of her interactions are very surface level.
Her coworkers would call her a frigid bitch. They would say that she’s calculating and callous. Her superiors see her as calm and driven.
In truth, these are all little more than facades. Masks, if you will. The real Maddie is quiet and introspective. She has a brilliant mind and has proven to be incredibly astute. Coupled with a very empathetic nature, she finds herself very skilled at reading people and determining who they want or need her to be in that moment. It’s this subtle manipulation and her ability to remain calm under pressure that makes Maddie such an asset to an organization like the Turks.
But for Maddie herself, it’s tiring. With how quickly and often she bounces between personas, it’s difficult for her to determine what’s really her and what’s just an act. This has led her to not really pursue any relationships, be they platonic or romantic. Yet, despite her growing identity crisis and tendency to self-isolate when not on the job, Maddie holds herself together fairly well. In public.
On her current assignment as “Naomi Chambers”, Maddie portrays herself as a Shinra weapons engineer who has become disillusioned with her employer’s arrogant disregard for the planet. So much so that she is willing to go as far as developing bombs to be used by the more extremist cells of AVALANCHE and leak information on upcoming Shinra weapons systems. She comes across as an idealistic, enthusiastic young woman, eager to change the world by any means necessary.
But the assignment has taken its toll on her. Maddie is painfully aware of the consequences of her actions, despite them being just “part of the job.” She feels responsibility for every life taken by one of her bombs. And the guilt of knowing that the people she’s getting close to, sharing laughs with, will eventually be turned over to Shinra and likely executed is beginning to gnaw at her. She finds herself torn between her loyalty to Shinra and her family and her growing loyalty to the people of AVALANCHE, all the while being utterly disgusted by the truly vile acts both organizations push her to do.
Confused and conflicted, the only truth that Maddie really knows about herself is that more than anything, she would like to run away.
History:
Maddie and her twin brother Markus were born to Roderic and Florence Lovell in the city of Midgar. Roderic served in the military while Florence was a tailor. They lived a comfortable life, not wanting for much. As far as early childhoods went, Maddie’s was fine. Her parents were loving and because her brother was always right there beside her, she never felt lonely.
Roderic was deployed to Wutai when the twins were about seven. He promised the kids that he would come back a war hero just to make them proud. Truth be told, the man was already a hero to them, just by being him. But they’d never have a chance to tell him that. About three years later, the family was informed that Roderic would not be coming back. He had died in battle.
This destroyed Florence. She effectively shut down, barely caring for herself or the children. Markus became angry. So very angry. He began to act out and get into fights. Once he turned fourteen, he was eventually expelled from school. And, not missing a beat, he immediately joined the Shinra military, vowing to join the ranks of SOLDIER and become a hero, like his father had wanted to do.
Maddie didn’t process the loss well. While only her father died, she had in a sense lost both her mother and brother to grief. So she bottled up her own grief and began to take care of her family the best that she could. It started with simply doing the laundry and preparing meals, but after a few years it eventually fell to her to keep the household together. After he left, Markus sent a portion of his salary home every month to help out, but when the life insurance and their savings had run dry, Maddie had to pick up a part time job to help bridge the gap, all the while keeping up with her studies in hopes of getting into university.
It was in her third semester of university when Maddie was approached by a Shinra man with the intentions of recruiting her. Apparently a former professor had recommended her, and after some intense scouting, she had peaked their interest. It didn’t take much to convince her: the pay would easily cover both her and her mother’s expenses even with Markus no longer sending anything. And the recruiter promised her a chance to see the world, something that she didn’t even know that she wanted until the opportunity presented itself.
She would split her remaining time in university between attending her classes and undergoing an intense training program. By the time she graduated, Maddie had become a fully fledged operative of the Turks. Not exactly something Maddie shared. As far as anybody knew, she had found a position within Shinra like so many of her classmates.
Her first real assignment was to infiltrate a suspected AVALANCHE cell within Midgar. She would be tasked with identifying key figures within the cell and reporting on their movements and activities. All the while, she would supply the cell with explosives and information carefully cultivated to result in what has been explained to her as “acceptable damage” to the company.
Despite her moral reservations regarding the assignment, Maddie continues to do her job and do it well. After all, she’s a Turk. And Turks complete the mission. No matter what.
Weapon:
The Quicksilver fires .45 cartridges, holding seven within a standard magazine. While Maddie’s a decent shot, she’s no markswoman, and would much rather rely on her magical prowess than her firearm’s accuracy. In the case that she does have to use the pistol, the Quicksilver allows her to engage targets between medium and close range.
Skills:
Demolitionist
As part of her training, Maddie developed the skills required to assemble, operate, disarm, and disassemble explosive devices. In battle, this can be seen through her frequent utilization of explosive items such as grenades and molotovs.
Lightfoot Predator
Being rather light on her feet, Maddie can move stealthily at a respectable pace. In combat scenarios in which she is not the sole target, she prefers to duck in and out of cover, taking shots at unaware opponents.
Neutralize
Sometimes a person needs to be taken out of a situation without being killed. Maddie, despite not being the most physically imposing woman around, is capable of subduing unaware targets through short, intense chokes.
Manslayer
Having primarily trained to engage human targets, Maddie is more comfortable fighting people than monsters. She’s more likely to damage a vital area on a man than a beast or machine.
