With the coolness of his ice breath on the sand, Frostbite finally felt that he could, just maybe, take a moment to close his eyes and rest. He figured, and hoped, that they were far enough away from the Scorpion Den that they wouldn't be easily followed. Unfortunately the desert was all gold and he was gray. That made it somewhat difficult for him to blend in to say the least.

It didn't seem like rest would be the case though. He had hoped telling Vivid to get some rest would be the end of any conversation, but that didn't seem to be the case for the chatty hybrid. His eyes flicked back open again to stare at her as she asked him if she could join him. He heaved out a heavy breath, this was why he didn't really want to bring anyone else along. Unfortunately he had needed her cooperation for the plan to work, and now he was stuck with her it seemed. Joy.

"If you can keep up," he grumbled out. He didn't even know if they would be treated any better in the Sky Kingdom. He had been treated ok in the Ice Kingdom, but he imagined that was mostly because his mother was a princess. If he had been anyone else he probably would've been killed the moment he was born. He just had to hope that he would at least go mostly unseen. He could try to pass as a darkly colored IceWing, he'd done it before since he had seen those that were more on the gray side rather than white, but he'd have to keep his wings down.

He let his eyes drift shut again, now very much hoping that was the end of the conversation so that he could try to get some sleep before having to fly across the rest of the desert. He wanted to travel at night if at all possible, mostly because he would blend in better. There would also be less dragons out overall. Less chance of getting seen, and therefore less chance of getting sent back into the Pit.

His eyes snapped open as Vivid spoke again and he lifted his head fully up to stare at her, baffled. "We just got out of there and you want to go back?" He felt, maybe, a tiny bit bad about leaving the other hybrids there, but in that situation it was every dragon for themselves. "Are you insane? Do you want to get thrown back in the Pit again?" If they got caught there would be no mercy from Caracal. If she wanted to go back and risk her neck fine, but he wasn't doing it.

It had been a long day and a long night as he was out training with Cranesong and then he had to come back and keep working with the elders. Not that he minded hanging out with Trouteye, Stonestep, and Dappleflower. They could be kinda grumpy, but at least Trouteye always liked to tell stories about when they were apprentices and kits, before even Dawnstar was leader. It was hard for Lionpaw to comprehend a point so many moons ago, but it was always interesting to him.

He had missed Frostwhisker's presence in the apprentices den. Now he was just stuck with his brother and Reedpaw, who wasn't so interested in cuddling. Not that Frostwhisker had been, but just having four breathing bodies in the den had always made it feel more full. He had seen her heading into Dawnstar's den the morning after her vigil though and was waiting with curious thoughts for when he could ask her what their leader wanted.

Reedpaw was crouched next to him at the fresh kill pile, munching away on some shorebird that she had caught in the hunting patrol that morning. He hadn't gone out yet, he was waiting for Cranesong to either take him with her on border patrol or go do battle training. He hoped it was battle training, that he was good at. Border patrol was ok, so long as they didn't go hunting. He sucked at that.

Once he saw the familiar tabby pad out of the leader's den he sprung to his paws, amber eyes gleaming. "Hey, Frostwhisker!" He padded up to her, plumed tail waving, "What'd Dawnstar want to see you about? Must've been something important if she dragged you in there right after you've been awake all night." He knew she was probably heading to the warrior's den to rest, but he couldn't resist asking.

Sora could tell from Lumi's response that she was not 'good' as she said, but it wasn't his place to ask anymore. They had burned those bridges a decade ago when Lumi had left to go to Fishertown. He hadn't sent her a letter or spoken to her since then. He just nodded when she said she was happy that he had found a place here. He didn't know how genuine that was. "Yeah, it's been good so far." He was happy here, for the most part, but even with Asher living with him he always felt lonely. He was so used to a house full of siblings that living with one other pokemon wasn't enough. Not that he thought he could handle it.

He tried to meet his sister's gaze when she looked at him, but quickly gave up when he could tell she was staring past him. He wanted to say something else, but he didn't know what. That he was sorry they had fallen apart, that he hadn't tried harder to keep his brothers at home, or for basically acting like she didn't exist for a decade?

Instead he sighed and nodded, "Sure, ok," he turned to start making his way towards the café that was recommended, "You should get something too, at some point." He didn't know if they were going to be able to work together very well, but at the very least he wanted to make sure she was functional. He had no idea how kindly she'd take to him nagging at her. Not well he'd guess.

Without saying anything else he padded quickly towards the café. When he stepped in he could see the long bar that stretched along the back wall with the window to the kitchen behind. He could see the vines of the owner, and head chef, moving about and picking up materials to add to whatever was cooking. He was reminded that he hadn't eaten anything that morning when his stomach growled quietly at the smell of cooking eggs and roasting vegetables.

"Over here!"

He glanced up as he caught sight of Asher waving at him from a collection of tables that had been pushed together to accommodate the large number of Pokémon. He padded over and pulled himself into the booth next to his partner. He just gave the other team a quiet nod of greeting before reaching out for the water that had already been distributed to everyone, trying not to look at the obviously empty seat where his sister was supposed to sit. It reminded him too much of home.

"We were just talking about what kind of abilities we have and how well the team is going to mesh together," Asher told him without needing prompting. "I think we have a solid lineup that will let us take care of most anything we run into." The Quilava looked excited to have new Pokémon to talk to and plan with, his fiery mohawk flickering away.

"Ok," Sora's voice was somewhat subdued, "What've you figured out?"

Another day and another slog through a fairly mundane and boring school day. Kenzan honestly barely remembered what most of his teachers had said over the course of the day. He didn’t really feel the need to pay attention though. All he needed to do was make sure he understood the homework and he would be fine on the upcoming exams. It wasn’t like he’d ever had problems before despite his lack of active studying.

As the final bell rang, he packed up his stuff to head either home or to the bookstore. He weaved through the various people who were heading to clubs or other after school activities. He mindlessly scrolled through the music on his phone as he put his headphones in and decided that he would go to the bookstore for at least a couple hours so he could get work done in peace. He, shockingly, hadn't gotten any pestering texts from his mother so he felt in the clear for the moment at least.

And he did get work done, a fair amount of it actually in between scrolling through social media and playing games on his computer. He ended up staying for longer than just a couple hours, but he doubted that Kudo cared at this point. He was there often enough he was just a constant fixture at the table at this point.

It was getting into early evening by the time he left, but despite seeing the dead body with that bunch of second years he didn’t feel any fear. Though his head did snap upright when he heard noise through the music.

“Hey! Can you grab her!”

He stopped in confusion at the sight in front of him. A white cat loping towards him with someone he vaguely recognized in passing from school chasing after her. A second year if he remembered correctly, in a different class to the crowd he’d stumbled across.

The cat had already slowed down at the sight of him and padded up with an insistent meow before rolling over onto his shoes. He stared down at the curious blue eyes that peered expectantly up at him. He crouched down to pet her, and loop a finger through her collar, as the guy caught up to him.

“Thanks, she slipped out when I opened the door,” he bent down to scoop the cat into his arms, “You should know better than that Meeko.” He made eye contact with Kenzan, “Oh, hey, you go to school with me. Sakai Kenzan right?”

How this guy knew his name he had no idea but he nodded, “You’re welcome and, yeah, that’s me.”

The other student grinned, “Great, well, see you at school then!” He turned on his heel to jog back the way he came.

Not the weirdest encounter he’d had recently, but it was definitely up there. He just shrugged his shoulders and turned his music back on so that he could get the rest of the way home. Hopefully without any more weird encounters.

As Vivid slipped into the water Frostbite instead chose to slump down on the sand. He wasn’t the biggest fan of getting wet if he was honest. He was used to the frigid mountains of the Ice Kingdom or the one time when he’d been a young dragonet that he went to the NightWing’s island. He didn’t remember much of it, but he did remember that it was hot and humid. He was used to the sand anyway. He’d spent long enough laying on it that it honestly would feel weird to him to not be dealing with the shifting grains.

He let his head rest on his claws and closed his eyes briefly, finally feeling like he could rest without something looming over him. His eyes quickly snapped back open as the smaller hybrid spoke. He grunted in affirmation as she got his name right. Where she’d heard it he had no idea. “Nice to meet you too I guess,” he muttered, trying to ignore the stinging pain the sand caused. Both from the heat and from getting into the shallow scrapes on his flank and face.

Three moons, how could this dragon be so chipper after they’d just escaped from the Scorpion Den? She has just likely killed several dragons and yet her voice was chirpy and excited. He let his eyes slip shut again at the question. “Long enough to rest for a bit then I’m going in the direction of the Sky Kingdom,” a single ice blue eye opened to stare at Vivid, “You’re free. What you do is up to you.” So long as it wasn't following him around.

He didn’t want to end up carting some naïve young dragon around with him. That meant he had a greater chance of being caught, it would be harder to get places with two of them, and she was far too…uppity. He just wanted to rest at this point and then go somewhere that was much less hot. “I’m good thanks,” he mumbled out, shifting, trying to get comfortable on the hot sand without having to get wet.

Eventually he stood and breathed out a thin layer of ice onto the sand. That was something he could do now that his jaw wasn’t clamped shut. He was careful to make sure that it wasn't cold enough to actually hurt him, just keep him cool. He patted the sand down and laid back down with a sigh as the coolness helped soothe the aches. “I’d recommend some rest. It’s a long way to anywhere.”

The shock on Frostwhisker’s face was the kind of reaction she’d expected. Part of her was curious to see how much the she-cat would be able to cover, how willing she was to listen. Dawnstar had little use for warriors who weren’t completely loyal to her and her ideas. The lashing tail did not go unnoticed but the restraint was surprising from the blunt warrior. She’d seemed bold enough talking to her son, but now she was holding her tongue.

The question was expected and Dawnstar already had an answer crafted. “Many of our warriors, unfortunately, are very set in their ways. You’re new to being a warrior and are, I should hope, more willing to learn all you can.” Her whiskers twitched, though with what emotion it was difficult to tell, “You’ve grown up watching our warriors and know our ways, yet you’re still young enough to learn from our closest allies.”

One of Whitestar’s warriors would be coming to her as well, and whoever the tom chose would be welcomed. She wouldn’t trust them though. Part of why she wanted Frostwhisker there was to keep an eye on the going’s on in the camp. Listen for dissent and any rumors.

She smiled at the tabby, “I want you to take this opportunity to learn what you can. However, I also want you to listen. Gossip, rumors, discontent, anything that catches your attention.” She knew Frostwhisker was good at listening and it would be helpful to put those skills to use. “You’re a competent young cat Frostwhisker and I wouldn’t choose you if I didn’t think you were up to it. I’ll give you a couple days to settle your thoughts before you go to FireClan.” She waved her tail in dismissal, “Oh, and try not to mention the more…clandestine nature of your assignment,” with that said she turned her attention back to her constantly twisting thoughts with no further room for arguement.

The hurt that Sora felt when Lumi wouldn’t look at him was expected, but it didn’t make it any less potent. He was careful to keep any of it out of his expression though. He already felt like she hated him and he wasn’t sure how he felt about her. He had hated her before, when she acted all happy and like nothing was wrong when they were younger. Now she looked like more than a bit of a mess with her long, unkempt fur.

He swallowed down the urge to scream, or cry, as she said that she hadn’t heard anything from the family. “Yeah, I haven’t heard from them either.” He figured he could’ve reached out, but he didn’t know how to. He didn’t want to remember the horror, the shock, or the grief that his family had been put through when they got back from Ember Cave. He fought off the physical shake to banish the thoughts from his mind as Lumi asked him how he had been.

His mouth opened to respond, say he was fine as he always did, but he paused. He wanted to confide in his sister. Tell her all the pain and hurt that constantly pushed into his mind every day, the nightmares that he dealt with every night. When they were younger he wouldn’t have hesitated. He would’ve spilled his guts to her in a heartbeat, but they weren’t the same anymore and he doubted he would receive any sympathy from her.

“Not great but I’m making do,” he shuffled his paws on the ground and stared down at them. It was about as close as he felt he could get to being honest. The ‘not great’ could be assumed to be anything. Money trouble, difficulty at the guild, literally anything. “And yourself?” He did genuinely want to know how she was, but he didn’t really expect honesty. He kinda regretted even chasing after her at all right now.

Duskwing was pulled from the heavy claws of sleep by Fernstar's familiar yowl. As much as she wanted to stay snuggled deep in the moss and feathers of her nest it wasn't like she could ignore the call of the leader. Instead she huffed out a sigh and stood to stretch out her slender legs. She gently prodded Stormheart since she knew the silver tom would probably sleep through the meeting if she gave him the chance. He'd been out hunting quite a bit the previous day so she couldn't exactly blame him.

She slipped through the entrance to the warrior's den, not surprised that she was one of the first up and out. She gave Maplestream a nod as she passed by the nursery. She was more than willing to help, but she certainly didn't envy the other she-cat having to sit outside in the cold the whole night. She padded towards the Highstump and cleared away a bit of the snow and frost with her claws before settling down. She wrapped her tail over her paws and turned her pale green eyes to Fernstar.

Hopefully Moosepaw would be awake as well since it once the meeting was over she would be taking him out for his assessment. Given that it was winter she knew that it would be a tough one, but she trusted her apprentice's skill well enough.

The paw that prodded his side was lightly swiped at, but it was already too late. Stormheart sighed heavily and blinked open his eyes, squinting at the light of the early dawn sun. He fought back a slight shiver as he stood and shook the remaining moss from his fur. He just caught sight of Duskwing slipping out of the warrior's den and blinked in confusion. Why had she woken him up so early? He stuck his broad head out of the den and saw Fernstar standing on top of high stump. Ah, that would do it.

He shuffled his way out of the den and looked over to the nursery where he could still smell the strange cats from the day before. The thought of them still made his pelt bristle nervously. He sent Maplestream a shy smile, "Morning," he mewed softly as he put a bit of a quicker pace to his step to get to the Highstump. He settled onto his haunches nearby Duskwing and looked around to see if anyone else was awake and making their way to the meeting.

It would've been nice to sleep in, but he figured that if Fernstar was calling a meeting this early it must be important. He shuffled his paws slightly in the snow. Maybe it would be what they were doing about the strangers. He didn't like them being in camp, but then again he had been a loner before he had been welcomed in, so maybe they would stay. The idea made him uncomfortable, there was just something he didn't like about the way these cats acted. Still he would follow Fernstar's orders and if she said they would stay then so be it.

Didn't expect to have him done this quick but there ya go
