Amara 'Mara' Nguyen

Location: Room six - Training room

Everyday was the same. She'd wake up laying in some sort of twisted entanglement in her bed staring up at the same blank ceiling with a feeling of dread weighing heavily on her chest. Everything bled together. All the disappointments stacking up on one another as she failed to even grasp the small edge of her so called power.

Mara curled up on her side with a sigh. Felix wanted her to come in early to get some one on one training done, though she couldn't imagine what was left to try. They had tried pairing her with the Russian boy. Hoping she could slow him down mid jump and get a better look but all it resulted in was a series of headaches and of course; failure. By this point she fairly skeptical if she even had powers anymore or if it was just a freak happenstance.

Felix was kind to her though. Through each failed stimulus he assured her she was in the right place and they just had to find her 'trigger'. Even the usual sarcastic voice that seemed to delight in her failings had fallen quiet in the myriad of self pity she chose to wallow in.

"I wonder if they'd mind me skipping today?"

She mumbled before dragging herself out of the warmth and into the cool air of her room. It's not like she had anything else to do plus, everyone else seemed to be getting some sort of grasp on their abilities and Mara could start to feel herself shrink away from the places they dwelled.

There it was. That slight twinge of jealously that churned her stomach. They were amazing. All of them. Mara had no idea what their future was here but she was certain that her housemates were going to be able to do amazing things at the end.

Padding outside, still dressed in her pajama shorts and tank, Mara wandered towards Felix's session room. She didn't even bother to knock as she swung open the door catching the older man by surprise.

"Good morn-" Felix had started to greet her before scowling at her appearance, "Interesting choice in wardrobe." She could feel his annoyance but shrugged it off as she slid into her usual spot.

"So what's on the schedule today?"

Felix's face brightened as he broke out into a grin, "I'm glad you asked! We're going to a special room today."

There was an eagerness in his voice that caught Mara's attention. She had never seen him so full of energy and naturally she felt herself stir in response.

"Oh? A new room? What's in there?"

"The boys in the lab have finally figured out how to trigger your abilities."

Mara could feel her heart leap in excitement. Could it be true? Could she finally be taking a step forward?

"After analysing your results and your bodies responses to simple stimuli they've decided to up the anti, or so to say. I wasn't expecting to go this far right off the bat but it should yield good results." Felix rambled on, mainly to himself.

Mara's brows arched together in puzzlement. 'Go so far?' She didn't understand but she wasn't sure if she cared at this point. Any type of progress was still progress. She simply smiled back at him as she pushed her fretting thoughts to the side.

Felix gathered his clip board and a few other things before motioning her to follow.

She did was instructed. Her fingers plucking mindlessly at the fabric around her waist as nerves crawled up and down her spine. Mara was excited, thrilled even, but his words settled heavily on her soul. Adding a poison to her joy as worry ate at the back of her skull.

Felix took her to a new corridor with a whole new set of locked doors. How big was this facility? And how did he know where to go? None of the doors were labeled nor was the hallway and yet, Felix navigated them with ease.

"Prepare yourself Mara." He said with a tinge of mischief in his voice as he reached towards a door on their left.

She took in a deep breath as he swung the door open. Inside the room was the same pale white as the rest of the facility. Cameras hung low and wide on each corner all aimed at the center where a little chain link fence stood.

'What?'

Felix had started to lightly push her into the room as Mara looked on in complete confusion. Behind the caged area was a wall of dark tinted windows. If she squinted hard enough should could make out the faint outlines of shuffling bodies. 'I guess they're here to observe.' But observe what? She still couldn't figure out how any of this was going to help her.

"Go on."

He urged her through the opening in the chain link cage. It was then she saw the little machine set up inside. Mara halted mid step as she tried to figure out where she had seen such a contraption before.

"It's a batting cage."

Felix filled in the gap in her memory but it did nothing to help ease her confusion. Turning towards her mentor, "So playing baseball is going to help me?" This was bizarre even after everything else they had put her through this definitely ranked high on the weird level.

A door slid open and a man clad in a lab coat carried something small out to Felix, the two whispered to each other feverishly before he took the object and sent the man on his way.

Felix hurried over to Mara as he presented a small metal circlet. "It may not be the height of fashion but they want you to wear this." Like usual he wasn't keen on giving away too many details about what they were hooking up to her but Mara trusted him.

Tentatively she took the object and placed it like a crown on her head. They must've taken her measurements because it slipped perfectly around and sat snuggly upon her forehead. "Uhh, okay."

"Now I need you to go stand over there" He pointed to the area in front of the machine and mindlessly Mara obeyed.

Part of her wondered if she should ask more questions. Demand answers because none of it made sense but she didn't. She just went and stood exactly to where he had told her to. As soon as she had turned to face her mentor she could hear the machine begin to fire up.

'I don't even have a bat?!'

She didn't have time to voice her concern before the first ball shot out. Mara squealed in surprise and leapt to the side. Suddenly pain shot through her skull as the device on her head began to press into her flesh

"Get back to your spot and it'll stop." Felix called out as Mara scrambled back. Like he had said the pain ceased but she could feel tiny beads of sweat or maybe even blood begin to well up underneath the circlet. Another ball hurdled towards her as and instinctively she dodged out of the way, only to be rewarded in pain once more.

Moving back to her spot she realized she wasn't going to be allowed to move.

"Slow or stop the ball and we can call it a day."

How was she going to do that? Mara was beginning to panic. She had no control over anything. She didn't know how to stop them. 'I can't do t-' her thoughts were cut short as another ball shot out.

This time she didn't dodge as the ball struck her hard in the abdomen. Mara felt all the breath in her body whoosh out as she crumpled in pain.

"Get up."

Through bleary tear stained eyes she looked up at her 'trusted' mentor who nearly stood there, eyes hard against her pleading ones.

Mara had only gotten back up on her knees when the next ball came. She raised her arms defensively just in time for it to smack into her. Tears began to stream down her face. She couldn't do this. Why didn't he understand that?

"Felix...I ca."

Her voice cut short as she cried out once again as pain swamped her body. The balls were coming faster and there was nothing she could do. Mara huddled on the floor trying to defend herself from the onslaught of fast balls flying towards her when her circlet began to dig into her skull once more. She tried to claw it off but the device tightened in response.

"Get up and stop the balls." he barked.

She tried but her body protested. Everything in her screamed to lay down and curl up until it was over but the pain in her skull was becoming overwhelming. Mara moved to stand up with she heard a loud crack. At first it didn't feel anything. Just some pressure before pain bloomed and burned across her skull. Mara screamed as blood began to gush from her nose and pour down her lips and chin.

Mara clamped her hands around her certainly broken nose, trying to staunch the bleeding. Her eyes wide and frantic as they looked for Felix but he wasn't moving. Through her bleary eyes she could see his figure standing stoicly and the pain continued to increase from the circlet. They weren't going to stop. Not until she stopped the balls. Not until she unlocked her powers.

'I'm going to die here.'

Somehow she managed her way back on her feet as her body continued to be abused by the ever increasing rate of balls. She didn't want to die. She wanted to wake up from this nightmare, home and safe but that wasn't going to happen. No matter how much she clung to that hope. Inside she felt eerily calm. The pain had began to dull as she stood there. Mara felt lost within herself. Like being set adrift in a vast ocean. [I]There. [\i] There was something there. It felt cool to the touch as it began to wrap itself around her. Her whole body hummed and without much thought she could feel her arms beginning to raise into the air before her. There was a need to do something more. Something extra but what? Considering the game the scientists had her playing a part of her drew on the small irony as her hands formed the classic 'T' shape that referee's would use to signal a time out.

Slowly she opened her eyes. Everything felt sluggish around her as she looked curiously at the two balls that hung in the air just inches from her abdomen. Without a second thought she grabbed both of them in her hands and suddenly the world around her seemed to jolt forward.

Smiling she looked up at Felix with a small sense of triumph before she crumpled to the ground. Her vision went dark and her body threatened to upheave the acid in her stomach. Mara couldn't move. Her entire body pulsed with pain and fatigue. She strained to listen as the thud of heavy footsteps approached her, "You did good, girl." She could hear the pride echo in Felix's voice.

Mara couldn't find the energy move and respond but somewhere in the back of her mind she could hear the sarcastic and angry voice mutter a faint, 'Fuck you.' before passing out.

The woman had quickly shut down the question portion and began to rattle off the pairing names. 'Nikolai?' her brows shot up slightly as they had begun to shuffle towards the training room. Mara's brain quickly brought up the list of what she knew about the punk teen. To be honest she hadn't had very many interactions and while her hearr had sunk a little at the pairing she overall wasn't too overly distressed.

He was a teleporter. In fact, his power was the first thing to really greet Mara. As she had slunk out into the hallway on her first day still groggy from the slowing ebbing tranquilizer. A quirky smile tugged at her lips as she remembered the chaos he had caused from his sudden appearance along with her questioning her own sanity.

She folded her arms across her chest and audibly sighed. Mara wasn't quite she what they were going to put them through. She was in her own head when Nikolai had approached her. His size easily dwarfing the petite youth.

"So, look like we will be partnered. I dont know what you do." He scratched the side of his head, "I dont know what to do here. I dont have control over my power. It happens before I realize it."

The smile that had fallen from her lips earlier had returned as she watched the teen talk; his words slurring with his accent. 'At least he speaks English.' It would make things easier at least.

While Nikolai's rather drastic exterior appearance would usually be off putting to most it actually wasn't a bother to Mara, what did get to her was the height difference and she felt herself take a small step back to put some distance between the two.

She let her arms fall to her sides as her eyes drilled into the ground. She hadn't spoken to anyone about her power outside of Felix. Actually, that wasn't true. There was a girl that she had met that first day but suddenly she had vanished. An uneasy feeling coiled in the pit of her stomach and refused to move as she struggled to take in a deep breath.

"Ah, yeah..." she mumbled in respond as her brain sluggishly tried to find a good way of putting it, "It's nothing impressive really." Mara could feel herself stall as her inner voice sighed loudly.

'Dude can freaking teleport. Just spit it out!'

"I can slow down time...sorta."

It was still weird to admit to other people. With Felix it was always him pushing her to believe in what she knew at her core was the truth but speaking it out loud to a new face struck an awkward cord. Heat rose and colored her cheeks once more as she silently cursed her fair complexion. Though somewhere in her admission she had stopped glaring at the floor beneath them and had sought his own gaze. Mara's lips pressed in a grim expression as her eyes sparked with worry as she took in his reaction.

"I can't really control it either." Oh, no. Her mouth had begun to move of its own accord, sending a fresh wave of panic through her lithe frame."In fact it usually only lasts from two to four seconds and then poof. Like nothing happened. Except that one time...when my father and I were in a car accident. It was like hours passed in the span of seconds and I was able to move myself into a better positon. My father on the other hand didn't move and was more or less crushed."

Mara's face was now a steady pink as terror flickered within her dark eyes. Did she really have no control over her mouth? Spewing out her life story to someone who didn't ask nor probably cared and for once even her inner self was shocked into silence.

Nilin answered each question in turn with a fluid grace of detachment. Mara studied her face closely but every part of her seemed guarded that was until there was a flicker of emotion that danced across her face. Her eyes directed towards the seat next to her where Irina sat.

"Discovered something interesting, Miss Ivanov? Perhaps I might be able to provide assistance, seeing as how that is what I'm here for."

Mara turned her gaze towards the young telepath. She couldn't see what Nilian had picked up on. Irina just looked tired and possibly just a tad bit frazzled at the question.

"Nothing interesting, just annoying. You made a big confusion and everyone has many questions. It is getting kind of distracting."

Her answer seemed genuine enough. With all that she's been through lately Mara didn't doubt the sincerity in her retort. Not that she was given much of a chance to ponder on it before Nilian had moved on to the next question.

Despite herself she found her body leaning forward in excitement and anxiety as she watched the woman cup her hands together. Light began to pour from her as a flame kindled into life. Mara could hear her breathing hitch in sheer shock as she watched the little flame dance in her palms. For a moment it felt like all her anxiety melted away. The warmth from the glow was entrancing as it slowly melded from the passionate red to an icy blue not unlike Nilian's own piercing eyes.

Before she could think twice Mara watched with a child like fixation as Nilian gently sent the snowflake dancing into the air before them. It took everything in Mara to keep her jaw firmly shut as she watched the once flame float above them as if pulled on the strings of an invisible wind.

Mara leaned back after the display. Blinking widely as her brain tried to work around exactly how that had just happened. Sure, she had already begrudgenly accepted the reality of powers but what Nilian just did; it had left her bewildered.

"But what can I do?"

Her thoughts turned back in on herself. Her power seemed small, chaotic in its nature and always beyond her reach despite how much she tried to call it forth. Most of the time she had just dismissed her memories of the crash as a surge of adrenaline that had saved her life but Felix had assured her over and over that was not the case. Though Mara doubted she'd ever reach a place of power that exuded such grace like Nilian had just demonstrated.
She couldn't help it as a chuckle escaped her lips. Relaxing into her husband for a moment before turning to face him, "You should know by now that it's bad luck to break tradition." Mavis teased as her gaze leveled with his. There was a familiar glint of mischief that glimmered in the depths as a smug smile pulled at her lips. Her frame was small against his; demure and fragile. Wrapping her arms around his neck; Mavis pulled herself up closer. Nuzzling her face into his neck before biting the flesh softly.

"Mnn, best wait until sundown I suppose," She murmured, enjoying his scent and warmth before breaking away, "Can't break tradition, can we?" She teased once more.

"Justin...do you think he's ready?"

Mavis' voice had taken on a more serious tone as worry furrowed her brow. He had been in the shadows for the past hundred years and while he seemed to take a natural grace to the life Mavis couldn't help but worry. Idly she chewed on her lower lip. Anxious fingers pulling at the loose fabric on her nightgown as she started towards her closet. Mavis kept two wardrobes. One for her part in some of the acts and the other for blending in with the common folk in town. Occasionally she'd even fill in on the more dangerous stunts when the performers were ill or even exhausted. Personally she preferred walking along the tight rope. In fact that was how she met Jericho all those centuries ago. The day she fell off in the middle of her audition. She had been sure they'd send her off but he spoke up for her. Seeing something in the runaway dancer.
No worries. It's pretty hectic over here as well. If I don't post today I'll try to post tomorrow.

One by one the others filed inside the auditorium. Mara wasn't fully satisfied with Irina's dismissal as the exhaustion was plain to see across her face but she also didn't want to push the young girl further. She opened her mouth to respond but Uriel had already cut her off and Mara chose to sit back with a small polite smile as she tried to mask the incredulous surprise that no doubt crossed her face at Uriel's brashness.

It's not to be unexpected though. A lot of the time it seemed to come from a good place but some things Uriel didn't seem to think through before saying. Sighing softly Mara shifted uncomfortably. Why were they here? What's going on with this group training? It's not like this past week had yielded any decent results in her case. She wondered idly if anyone else had made any sort of progress. 'Certainly not Irina ' her subconscious chipped in to which Mara responded with another internal shushing as she idly wondered of there was a way to silence her inner monolog forever.

The doors slid open and a woman whose face would easily grace the tallest billboard stepped into the room. 'Where do they find these people?' she wondered stunned. Though the more she took her in the less she looked like a normal scientist. Beauty aside, youth still clung to her form though she still held that critical detached air that Elisa tried to hide but was blatantly apparent.

“Before any of you raise the question as to why I'm better suited to this task than your counselors, it's because I too have powers. This institute is where I was taught to control my powers so that I wouldn't endanger myself or those around me.”

No way.
Mara's eyes darkened as she looked harder at the woman. She had been here before them. She had been taken into the hell hole and forced through their training and here she stood today. The whole thing inspired a wash of awe and nausea. Would that be them one day? Standing in front of the next batch of frightened teenagers?

Mara didn't like the idea of it at all. Her arms folded across her chest as she waited for the woman to go on.

“If you have any questions pertaining to our session, I would be happy to answer them before we begin."

Professional and vauge. Though there wasn't much silent in between before Uriel opened his mouth and Mara send up a silent prayer for his presence. She had been overly emotional the last time they were here and Elisa's easily dismissed her outburst before berating Irina. This time she indented to watch and listen. Looking for fact hidden between the lines. If there were any at that is.

As Uriel quieted down Arthur spoke up. Mara swiveled her head towards him in surprised, she hadn't really expected him to say anything either though his questions remained in typical Arthur fashion. Quick and narrow.

Mara had a million. Things she wanted to know. The words bubbled and died on her tongue. Some Uriel had already asked. Others she'd just have to wait to find out. Either way she was ready for them to move on and get to this training. Maybe if she became strong enough she could get everyone out of here. That rare flicker of hope that still simmered deeply.
"Hmm, we should be OK but I'll go into town anyway and pick up some extra treats," Mavis lounged where her husband once lay; enjoying the warmth he left behind. She could hear the voices of their crew stir to life outside. Excitement clung to the mornings air as everyone was anxious to get settled down for the oncoming days. Mavis frowned slightly as she forced the covers off her. Icy fingers seized her where warmth once lay but Jericho was already up and moving it was only fair that she'd get up and do her part.

Enjoying his brief affection Mavis slid out of bed and began to rustle through her own things. "Did you know of the twina had a successful time passing out the flyers?"

The twins were the newest attraction seeing as they both stood at a staggering 7' 10". While they still had their normal jobs, as the newest members Mavis often sent them days in advance to market to the next town. Their height and pleasant nature's made them natural advocates. She'd also send them with a small bonus to enjoy themselves while they awaited for the circus to arrive, a thing that Mavis thought she was doing slyly but was partly sure Jericho knew about.
