Ranbu no Izayoi

The party set out from Midgar soon after first light. By noon, they reached Edren's mountainous border with Osprey. The main pass, where Izayoi had conducted her last stand five years ago, was occupied by a Valheimian checkpoint. Reinforced with black steel and brimming with soldiers rigorously inspecting what few travelers passed through, it clearly wasn't the best way into Osprey.

Instead, Izayoi led the party towards a side pass up the mountain, just wide enough for the wagon to accompany them. The terrain was steep, but with some effort, they managed to get all their mounts and supplies up the pass and started on the way down halfway through the afternoon.

"Ahead is what remains of the village of Atsu." Izayoi spoke for the first time in nearly an hour, staring down at the ransacked ruins at the foot of the mountain with a solemn gaze. "My home for five years. We will have to stay there for the night. It ought to be near dusk by the time we arrive."

The house that she, Isshin, and Suzume shared had still been standing when she'd left half a year ago. There was no other reasonable solution. Using one of the other home still remaining was unthinkable. She'd known those owners. They'd welcomed her. Kept their peace regarding who she was when they'd inevitably found out. Izayoi would not send the others to squat in those houses.

True to her estimate, dusk was an hour or two away by the time they approached what remained of the village. It hadn't been burned down in the attack, but several houses had been ransacked and debris still littered the street. Thankfully, there were no skeletal remains to be seen. Izayoi had seen to that months ago, spending days after the attack gathering the bodies to be burned away from the village. However, the closer they got, the more familiar the scene before her was.

Black-armored soldiers, milling about the ruins of the village. No more than two dozen in total, but...

"What is this?" Izayoi could barely breathe as her vision filled with red. "They dare return to the scene of the crime?" A feral scream erupted from her mouth as she drew her sword and charged, the first soldier in her way cut down in an instant.

"Ambush!" Came the cry from the Valheimian contingent. "To arms! We're under attack!" A few moved to engage the first intruder in their midst, while the remainder of the soldiers started charging at the rest of the party, the first ranks bearing swords and shields while half a dozen gunmen took aim.

ye hello
Kalina Kovalic

Well, if the princess wasn't worth anything, there wasn't any point to her idea, then. Kalina nodded at Justice explaining the joke, though the idea of a suicide bomber didn't sound quite so far-fetched to her. She opened her mouth to respond before an explosion from above cut her off.

Her mind went towards the obvious, her hand already moving to draw the pistol holstered on her hip. Ambush. It clearly hadn't been from behind, considering she'd been keeping a constant eye on the rear view mirrors. So that only left above. Kalina leaned slightly out the window, aiming her handgun upward only to see...Silje just lounging up top. It had only been her then.

Kalina flattened her stare slightly, giving her friend what passed for an exasperated look from her.

"Do you mind? I'm driving." Was all she said before sitting back down and putting her gun away. With a shake of her head, she continued gunning the engine down the High Road, going straight over another pothole.

___

They finally arrived at the spot some of the others had planned where Barghest Squad would be staying the night. Kalina maneuvered the truck into the lot and parked, dismounting with the rest.

"Beer me." She held a hand out, waiting for someone to toss her a lager from the cooler in the back. A glance around the town, such as it was. Unimpressive, and on its last legs. Reminded her of some of the bombed-out shitholes the Marauders had passed through when she was a child.

"I hope so." Kalina said in response to Gerard. "I thought you helped plan our itinerary. Or was it all Justice and Lance?" Admittedly, she'd barely paid any attention to what plans they'd actually made, short of remembering where to drive towards. But this trip wasn't for Kalina. At least, not in her eyes.

She pulled her phone out, briefly checking her mail. Annnnd...nothing. Command still hadn't responded to her request to be deployed with her father and the rest of the Marauders after this approved leave. A slight frown crossed her face. How irritating.
Shinozaki Yurie

They started to move through the forest, and Yurie didn't protest when one of the white kids, Isaac, just took the lead. Better him than her. She didn't have an interest in what was basically an exercise in herding cats, especially not certain people among them. Maybe that perpetual scowl on his face would keep the annoying ones in line...

...And maybe she could get home before the university failed her for not showing up to class. Yeah, right. At this rate, both those hopes were a fucking wash. Better to just deal with it for now. Not like bitching about it would do anything.

So she followed along with the group, only really paying attention again when their apparent leader said something sounded like he might know what he was talking about in the only field that mattered. Huh. Didn't he say something about that before? Right.

Yurie strode up next to Isaac, her hands up behind her head as she walked.

"Said you worked for a software company, right? Lemme guess, code monkey? Don't have much experience on that side of the fence."

She wasn't hoping for much, but any excuse to talk shop was better than none.
Iraleth Kyrios

She didn't even feel an impact. And judging from his stance, Chunji knew how to throw a punch. Impressive. Moreover, Iraleth barely felt the essence drain compared to her usual barriers. Her partner asked for her to reciprocate, and Iraleth did, slamming her own fist straight towards Chunji's face. Full force, nothing held back. She felt the impact, and knew the barrier worked. It really was that simple, then.

The professor deigned to answer Chunji's question about fueling barriers with one's Prime Essence. In short: don't. Iraleth still dutifully recorded the full effects in her notes just in case this was material they would be questioned on later. Their instructor wasn't incorrect: only do so if she was certain she would die without the extra boost. Iraleth understood that, of course. She'd be of no use to anyone with her Ethos crippled. But given her nature, that or death was more likely than not.

Professor Alto finished off with mentioning a physical exercise, and Iraleth tilted her head in curiosity. The school's last idea of one was an incomprehensible cavalcade of errors, but perhaps one from a reasonable-looking instructor would be less...inane. Nonetheless, Iraleth nodded towards Chunji and continued to work on her Personal Barrier in the time they had left.

@AThousandCurses
Yeah sorry, I'll get something up tonight, been kinda distracted
Salvator Rasch

The gunship started to fall, the remaining security troops were starting to be overrun, and Salvator almost relaxed a tad. Finally, something was going right on this op-

"Salvator, Ilshar, we've been hit!"

Son of a bitch. Salvator resisted the urge to curse sulfurously, instead acknowledging the first cry with a click of his comlink. Judging by Alice's next words, Kleo was hit badly enough that stims weren't helping. Of course this had to happen the second he started getting optimistic about the mission.

"Acknowledged." He replied over comms, keeping his voice even. "Do what you have to, we'll pick up the slack for now." Fortunately, this didn't change his current tactical assessment of the situation. The locals were finally taking the lead now that they were definitively winning. Big surprise. If they wanted to finally use their ammo, Salvator wasn't going to complain. Instead, he pinged the squad comms, issuing further orders.

"Right, Echo, Ilshar, you heard the lady. Keep pushing, but don't take any more risks or waste more ammo than you have to. Let the rebels do the bulk of the work for now, we still have an objective to push toward after this." That said, the voidhanger swapped from his heavy shotgun back to his carbine and joined the advance, firing only when he could get a clean headshot on the security troopers.
