Backlash huh. Hmm. Could I do something like reinforcing an object only delays the damage it would sustain? That way after it wears off in a minute the normal damage comes back, could end up destroying whatever he's reinforcing so he has to be mindful not to over use it. Not really a direct drawback but it'll at least prevent Damian from just using his quirk over and over on an object since he will end up destroying it.
Another idea is that the more he uses his powers his body takes physical strain depending on how he's reinforcing his items. Harder objects causes bruises, sharper objects gives him cuts, etc.
How about I make it so he can only reinforce objects for a minute, regardless if he’s touching it or not, and afterwards there’s a cooldown period for each object? That way later upgrades will just be longer reinforcement duration and lower cooldowns.
• Aspect of Soul: Greatsword - Large, unwieldy, but powerful. Almost comical in its size and girth, it is as childish as it is effective. Even though Umi seems naive to the threats in the tower her strength carries her onward. She can handle any burden and defeat any foe, so long as she has hope in her heart to carry her sword. Slinger - An arm mounted crossbow. Capable of taking on a versatile amount of ammunition, from small stones, proper arrows, vials and potions, and anything that can be held down by the slinger's clamp. It lacks the range and power of dedicated range weapons but it's easy to use even in a wild melee and shoots it's projectiles quickly and precisely.
• Abilities: Great Agility - Umi’s abilities are based around positioning, timing, and speed, even if she uses big weapons or normal ones. So she is both naturally fast and trained herself to move quickly, interact with objects dexterously, and quickly react to all sorts of dangers.
Uncanny Strength - One might expect a girl like Umi to rely on light weapons and ranged attacks and Umi certainly uses both, but she also has an monstrous strength when she uses her greatsword. Her blows are swift and heavy, well beyond her physical means, thanks to the Aspect of her Soul.
• Background: Umi was an orphan girl who unfortunately never found an adopted family, but she had a home and people who took care of her thanks to her kindly orphanage. Growing up she was always an adventurous girl who wanted to see new things, explore mysterious places, and fight bad guys. Morally a good girl but tends to get herself caught up in trouble. She could never leave people alone if they have problems and those stirring up trouble didn’t escape her attention either.
Her life changed in a major way thanks to her personality. Umi was in highschool when she heard one of her friends stopped coming to school. Worried about her health and livelihood Umi went to visit her friend and talk to her at home, but there she learned from her friend’s mother that she simply vanished. Gone without a trace. They were worried she was kidnapped and they spoke to anyone who knew where she might’ve been as well as the police but so far nothing. Umi couldn’t ignore this. So she went looking for clues, looking for answers, until one more she woke up and saw something impossibly amazing.
A floating tower in the sky. She had heard rumors of something like that around school, but never believed it. How could someone miss something that huge? How could pictures of it not be spread all over the internet? But before her eyes was that tower. And she knew that her friend was in there. That was the only place she could’ve gone. So Umi steeled herself and finally, she would go on an adventure!

• Appearance:
• Name: Mamori Heiwajima
• Title: Sanctuary
• Age: 15
• Class: Mage/Shield
• Aspect of Soul: Angel Aegis/Spear of Light - A shield to protect Mamori from the threats she perceives. A bastion to hide from the darkness. With it she can summon an intangible spear of light that can slay monsters, but against the mundane is little more than an trick to hide her weakness by blinding them with her illusions of grandeur.
• Abilities: Build Barriers - Mamori is capable of creating both physical and magical barriers to defend herself and her allies, or trap her enemies. Physical barriers take the form of walls made out of whatever material is nearby, popping out from the surface fast enough to intercept attacks. Magic barriers take the form of translucent walls of light that can be passed physically, but prevents magic and magical beings from moving through.
Wings of Mercy - Radiant wings that allow Mamori to fly above others, bypassing the need to ever step foot or be at the same level as normal people. But these wings are meant to support Mamori own doubt and make her believe she’s more capable with her magic than without it.
• Background: Mamori Heiwajima was a normal girl. A painfully normal girl. She’s always wanted to do more with her life and when she was still young and naive, she really tried. She trained herself, read her books, had a bright look in her eyes as she tried to be everything she wanted to be. But it she learned quickly that hard work isn’t enough to reach her dreams. Even when she succeeded at meeting her goals it felt empty, as a new, greater goal appears and shows that she’s only succeeded in raising the bar higher for herself. Her friends go above and beyond her as she struggles just to keep up. Eventually she just stops trying.
So she escapes to her fantasies. To her own stories and books where she’s the only one capable of doing anything. The chosen one, the reliable one, the one who has to make the hard choices and do what must be done. Mamori longed for the chance to finally prove to others and to herself that she was worthy of being considered great. For the fate to favor her and choose her to lead the world to a greater tomorrow.
That chance happened when she saw a tower in the sky. No one else has ever seen or heard of it before. She saw an angel in the air and she saw Mamori. Without another word she flew towards the Tower, as if guiding the nobody to embrace destiny. This was her chance. Mamori left everything behind so she could finally fulfill her dream.
To be someone special.
• Inventory: Mamori has been in the Tower long enough to gather her own items to survive the Tower without ever having to return to her old world. A ball of light follows her that she can store various items, mostly supplies like food and water, as well as some treasures.
She also has something of a “guide” to some parts of the tower that she often frequents, since the chaotic nature of the tower makes conventional maps useless.it details things like what monsters appear in a certain area, what beneficial items could be found, and various hazards to watch out for.
• Other: Mamori has been in the Tower for at least a month now, not that she knows it. She thinks she’s only been in there for a week at most. She doesn’t have a single base of operation as she can easily make a safe shelter for herself using her magic.
She’s an avid reader and consumer of media, and associates most things in the Tower with tropes, nerd lingo, and generally treating her life in the Tower as a video game albeit one that she takes very seriously.
She used to take bojutsu from grade to middle-school, but stopped when she entered high school. She’s since then been honing her skills again in the Tower, adopting her magic and shield into her fighting style. She was never that great but she’s gotten better.
Mamori used to have brown eyes and long hair, but now her eyes are red and she cut her hair short before she had left for the Tower. Her hair hasn't grown any longer since then.
Mamori’s favorite food is Sour Cream and Onion chips and her favorite drink is Mountain Dew. She hates raw fish and any sort of condiment sauce.

Standing at 6'5" and weighing in at 177 pounds, with short shaved hair and a notable scar on the left side of his head. He always wears glasses though he has contacts too. Likes wearing collared shirts, slacks, and generally looking sharp.
Damian's Hero Outfit was made more for looks over function, however he can make good use of what he does have. His red hood and cloak are his go-to items to reinforce, making them hard and stiff so they can function as armor in emergency or even as a weapon if he has them wrapped around his arm. He wears a pauldron on his left shoulder specifically so he can tackle with it without hurting himself too much. It's tough even without reinforcement.
Name: Damian Lavernius Age: 18 Gender: Male
Hero Name: Upgrade Quirk Name: Reinforcement Quirk Type: Emitter Quirk Description: Reinforcement improves the quality of an object Damian is touching for a short time. What he improves depends on the object he's touching; he can touch clothing to make them tougher or he can touch a blade to make it sharper. He can even touch food to make them taste better. He can only do this to objects and not living creatures though he can use his quirk on plants. Damian needs to touch the objects first before he can Reinforce them and they'll remain reinforced for one minute, though the reinforcement can remain indefinitely as long as he's holding it.
With a greater amount of focus Damian can give traits to an object he touches but these traits always only last one minute regardless if he's holding it or not. He can give the following special traits to objects: He can make them heavier, lighter, glowing, stiff, flexible, cleaned, or dirty. Damian can only give one object one trait at a time and if he tries to give another object a trait the previous one goes away.
Reinforcement comes from Damian's own muscles and over use can damage and strain his muscles. That's why large objects and/or objects made of multiple parts are much harder to reinforce, as more of his muscle mass becomes damaged just trying to sustain them all. Damian can easily reinforce small complex objects like a cellphone or a hamburger no problem, but trying to reinforce something bigger than a door or as a complex as a car is difficult. Only parts of said objects will have any reinforced quality and only the parts he's touching.
Inventory & Possessions: In his regular outfit Damian carries normal things like his school supplies and cellphone. He has a wallet with his driver's license and such, but he never carries cash unless he needs to. He drives an Audi that belongs to his dad and he takes a lot of care to make sure it's never dirty or damaged. His dad says he'll give it to Damian once he either gets into college or joins a hero agency.
In his hero outfit Damian carries a few notable pieces of gear. First is a combat knife with a taser on the reverse edge given to him by his father. Damian knows how to fight with it but also knows only to use it sparingly, and if possible only use the taser side. It also has a glass breaker on the pommel. Damian also carries some first aid kits on his belts and at least three pepper spray bottles. He also carries two pairs metal police issued handcuffs for securing criminals. They have very short chains that make it impossibly for criminals to use as garrotes, and they tighten if those captured twists their hands in them.
Sample Post:
"Is it over dad? Are-are we safe now?"
A tall, tired looking man and a smaller, portly woman were smiling and shedding tears as they embraced Damian. For once in a long while, good news had arrived and the family could stop running. A police officer smiled and handed Damian a newspaper with the headline mentioning how a powerful crime family had finally been caught, with many of it's top leaders guilty of terrible crimes they've been getting away with for too long.
"That's right sir, you and your family can come out from hiding now. Someone finally managed to pin those goons with all of the crimes that your father helped us with. I'm sorry that they've been such a problem for so long, but now that they've been arrested your family is safe again."
Damian stepped away from his parents so he could read it. A coordinated attack by a local hero agency, one that his father had worked for, managed to not only find enough evidence to catch those criminals but even caught them in the act of trading government secrets to a terror organization. These guys weren't just going to be sitting behind bars; they were going to get the full book thrown at them. It made Damian smile to see some justice finally done. But at the same time, it made him sad. He looked over to his parents who were crying tears of joy, but then he looked over at the family portrait. Four people on there: Damian, his parents, and his sister. A brave woman and a hero. Despite being a sidekick it was thanks to her that Damian's father and so many others are alive. But it costed her life, and it ended up haunting Damian and his family in more ways than one.
After the police officer left, Damian and his family sat around the dinner table to talk. They could finally use their real names again, go back to their home and go see their old friends. Damian however had a different idea. As much as he wanted to move back to Manhattan, he had a life here in San Francisco too. He was tired of always running and hiding, and his father didn't train him to just take an office job and do nothing with his powers. His sister didn't die just so Damian could live a boring life away from the injustices in the world. He wanted to pick up where she left off. Damian was going to be a hero. He handed his parents some documents, an application form to the Academy of U.J.
"Damian you... You can't be serious? After everything that's happened you still-"
"Of course. Because of everything that's happened, how can I not be? I can't just... I can't just ignore it. I can't just pretend that bad stuff isn't going to happen anymore."
"Son, I understand what you mean but you know it's not that simple. Being a good guy and having good intentions, it's still dangerous work. Your sister she... Bless her heart, she is a hero. But you don't have to be her."
"I'm not trying to be her dad. This is what I want to be. This is a part of my life now. And I'm not going to give it up."
"Damian, please, don't throw your life away like this! We can finally move on with our lives, we don't have to life in fear anymore! You can still do great things but you don't need to risk your life to do that. Run a charity, start a support business, but please son don't do this!"
"Mom, calm down. I'm not trying to hurt myself. I know the dangers. I'm... I'm not saying I'm not afraid of getting hurt or dying either. But I can't just live like that! You know what I'm capable of, what sis was capable of, hell dad you know what I can do! This is what you trained me for! Of course it's going to be dangerous. But that's why it has to be me. I can't... I can't just wait for someone to save me anymore. I know, that's just what happened, but I hated it. Four years guys, four years I've had to be afraid. But that ends now!"
It wasn't an easy decision. They were still very hurt about what happened to Damian's sister and they didn't want the same thing to happen to him. But Damian was firm in his decision. He wasn't going to let it scare him off. She never once wanted Damian to ever be afraid of villains, of people who abuse their powers, or anyone who would hurt others. Damian's father might've taught him how to fight but she was the one who taught Damian how to fight back. His mother still insisted that Damian choose a safer life, but his father understood all too well what Damian wanted to do. Naturally he was worried for his son but Damian was a man now. He had to make his own choices and this was the choice he made.
Understandable, I just felt plain mind reading is kinda of bland, but I can't really improve it without making it much more powerful. I'm still debating if I even want it so I'll keep thinking of another quirk.
I actually thought of another quirk. I call it Reinforcement, and it hardens objects he touches. Thus he can do things like make his clothes harder and turn them into a sort of quasi armor, or reinforce wooden sticks so they're as hard as steel. He can only use it on objects though not people, and reinforcing objects also makes them stiff. It's a double-edge sword since if he uses this on his own clothing it can get uncomfortable quickly since his shirt becomes ridged and inflexible, but at the same time if he hardens his enemy's clothing he can make it harder for them to move too, since their clothes will become stiff and restrict movement.
As long as he's touching an object he can keep it reinforced, but anything that leaves his touch will lose it's reinforcement after a minute. Additionally after the reinforcement wears off all of the damage the object accumulated will come back and damage it again, possibly causing serious damage. There's also an upper limit to how much damage the reinforced objects can take, and if too much damage is done the reinforcement breaks.
The group was doing a good job cutting down the numbers one-by-one, though Parum continued to bemoan the fact she did little to offer in terms of damage output. Everyone was dropping their foes in single hits while she barely seemed to be able to land most of her spells. But she had to keep her chin up and remain in the fight. Two of the winged kobolds flew into the air and casted stones onto her allies below; Kyra could take down one, so Parum would do her best to take out the other! She dropped her rapier down onto the ground for a moment so that she could draw her dagger from her belt. A blade of halfling make, perfect for throwing, which Parum proceeded to do as she moved out from cover as far as she could so she could hurl her dagger like a dart towards the kobold.
Yeah, Mind Reading has always been troublesome for a lot of GM’s, so I’m willing to work stuff out. For starters my character has to see the person’s eyes in order to establish a link, so anyone wearing sunglasses or masks can safely avoid his powers. But there is more to his powers than that I wanted to try.
His quirk is called “Network”, which allows him to establish a sort of telepathic communication network with anyone who is willing to establish a connection with him. This requires him to stare into someone’s eyes for at least ten minutes, and he can only communicate with them if they want to and if they’re awake. But aside from that he can communicate with them via mind reading anywhere at any time. Others within the Network can also communicate with each other.
His powers don’t really have any obvious combat application, but they can provide a very crucial support function by allowing the heroes to always be able to communicate with each other as long as they’re conscious. However my character needs to reestablish the network every few days. If he doesn’t people will start having difficulty communicating with each other over the network and eventually simply lose connection.
