The UK got rid of slavery and came up with a much better solution: they just killed all the black and brown people they encountered in other countries. EDIT: sarcasm, obviously! Just wanted to make that abundantly clear.

The argument has always strongly been that even though the North was morally correct; they were constitutionally wrong. I'm neutral on the issue.

Personally from my study of history during this time period, Slavery could have been abolished peacefully had cooler heads prevailed. It would have lasted longer most likely, but it would have been abolished without all those deaths. Essentially its just looking at the trends. Slaves were already running away during this Time period. The economic sustainability of it was decreasing. Other States could have 'embargoed' the Slave states...

Hindsight is 20/20 though.

You have a point, but don't forget the CSA seceded first as a knee-jerk reaction to Lincoln's election. They just assumed he would try to abolish slavery as their president, and they were probably right but they fired the first shots. But we could be here all day debating the topic to no avail.

Very true. By cooler heads I mean on both sides. Haha.

THough I do find it incredibly hypocritical that just a few years before all this there were Northern States thinking about seceding as well for their own reasons.

Yeah, everyone forgets that one of the slave states in the Union was Delaware. They forget because it's Delaware.

^ I think that's more of a case of people forgetting Delaware exists altogether.

Let's not forget that even with the abolishing of slavery, the former slaves were still second class citizens for a very long time. Jim Crow laws, segregation, etc. I will admit that the North wasn't untainted either. However, I would like to stop before this blows up into an argument.

We should argue about the war of independence instead.

It's not too much of an argument, we're all pretty much agreeing and agreeing to disagree. It took a 100 years and the Voters Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act for the policies Lincoln and Reconstruction set out to accomplish to be enacted. Abraham Lincoln freed black people, but Lyndon Johnson opened the voter's booth to them.

Ooh! Yes!

This is less focused on the actual event, but more focused on people's opinions. First of all, just a disclaimer, I am an American and a Christian. I love both by faith and my country.

That said! It annoys the crap outta me when other Christians or people state that we were founded as a Christian Nation. We weren't. No where in the Bible does it state that Rebellion is okay. In fact if we look at the whole taxes thing...looking at what Jesus said when the Jews asked him about paying taxes to the Roman Empire (Kinda similar situation to the Americas being owned by Britain thought not entirely), Jesus said, "Give unto Caesar's what is Caesars."

So...I actually would say that the actions of the Founding Fathers were not in line with what Jesus taught at all. But that's just my opinion...

I don't think Israel under the Roman Empire is at all comparable to the Thirteen Colonies under Great Britain.

Well, the Founding Fathers' religious views were quite different from the type of Christian you are talking about.
