At this moment the rp is FULL. I will not be accepting any new characters until the need for a second group arises, or if someone drops out.

THE WALKING DEAD: Survival

Note, I've had this idea laying around for a long while, and I'm just popping it in the IntChk to see if it'll get anywhere. There are a few TWD rps going on already, one of which I'm involved in, so I won't be surprised or too upset if this doesn't get enough attention. Still, I thought it was worth more in the Interest Check, rather than just laying around in my drafts all day.

This is a High Casual rp

BREAKING NEWS

It sounds from radios and flashes on television screens everywhere across the continent of North America. The news hasn't reached Mexico yet, much less the rest of South America. Countries oceans away live in darkness, unaware of what's heading for them, or maybe what's already there.

It's devastating, horrifying.

It's impossible.

The letters, the words, they pop out at the American audience screaming silently the downfall of the world's superpower.

BREAKING NEWS: New Super-Disease Sweeps across America Claiming the Lives of Thousands

A blonde woman with the teeth of a goddess appears on the screen. A reporter, in a stiff, starchy, grossly beige suit. Those dark brown eyes echo the fear of the world. She's speaking, but between your utter shock and her average looks its hard to concentrate.

"It seems, Richard," she's talking to a newsroom reporter, addressing him by his name, "that a new super-disease or super-virus has struck, not just the American public, but Canada as well. The APHA (OC: American Public Health Association) has theorized it to be some new super form of a strain of bornavirus. The details of obtaining the virus thus far remain unclear, however it has been noted to cause intense fever and dementia among victims. And also..." Those big brown eye blink with the pain of a martyr. Then she breaks character and lets the beans spill, "I'm not supposed to say this...the government says I'm not supposed to...but the American public deserves to know. This virus...this disease...It's bringing people back to life Richard. Corpses...and they are killing people. My best friends dead grandmother woke up from her funeral box this morning and tried to eat her-"

Her lips are still moving, but it's hard to concentrate past the 10,000 pound elephant that she just dropped in every house across America.

Your world as you know it is about to come to an abrupt end and it's going to take everything you have in you to survive it.
Right now, I am looking for a max of eight roleplayers. I will only accept more after our first group is established, if I want a second group introduced.

PLOT:
This is a Walking Dead survival rp, meaning it will focus on our characters surviving throughout the post-apocalyptic world of the outbreak. Keep in mind, survival does not mean your character has to stay alive.

At your own discretion, you can very well kill your character and add a new one. However, I am not making it mandatory that your character must die. The rp will primarily focus on the character surviving in the subsequent months after the outbreak, and eventually, finding a cure. However, I intended for this rp to go on a while, so it will have many plots, and be open to plots from any participants :)

The rp will begin in Atlanta, very much like the series itself, and will start about three days after the outbreak begins. It is about mid-October, so it is cold. There will be daily (or sometimes daily) updates from our lovely blond reporter, and our characters will group together to survive. Along the way, they will encounter similar more antagonistic characters and groups.

This rp asks for mature non-stereotypical rpers. I don't want this rp to be filled with pseudo-Carl's and pseudo-Daryl's. I don't want everyone to be from the military or a cop (though one or two from those groupings are certainly welcome), or from some other badass background. I want diversity. Not every survivor has to be a badass, and realistically, how realistic is that??? People get lucky. We see it all the time in real life. We see it all the time in the series itself. From the top of my head:

  • Carol = housewife

  • Maggie = lived on a farm all her life

  • Glenn = pizza delivery boy

  • Andrea = Lawyer (t.v. series), Clerk

What I really want is variety. Think up unique but everyday characters. I want people to start out, not thinking "what characters will I be able to seduce with mine" or "how badass should my character be", but with diversity and realism. Like, "oh shit, my character's only a pizza delivery boy, how is that going to make it harder and more interesting in terms of survival?" That's all I'm asking you to keep in mind if you apply to this rp.

Name: Shane Cook

Age: 28

Personality: Shane is a tough cookie to nail down both mentally and emotionally. His job requires that he be empathetic, understanding, patient and caring and he is often all of those things, being a naturally warm hearted person. On the other hand though he couldn't do his job effectively if he couldn't put a certain amount of distance between himself and all the hurt he deals with on an almost daily basis. He would get crushed under the weight of it all, or at the very least he'd have to take quite a bit of time off in order to deal with his own emotional well being. Fortunately for his clients though he isn't built like that. He can handle things very well mentally. He doesn't exactly shut himself off emotionally but he is able to take everything in stride and deal with it. A fantastic trait he picked up during childhood.

On the other hand though he isn't a complete pushover. His determination and stubbornness when it comes to the things and people he cares about is something to behold and when he really wants something he's going to do his damn best to get it one way or another. All in all Shane is a good man. Calm and kind with just enough drive to do what he needs to do in order to get the things he wants.

Occupation: School Counsellor

Ethnicity: American

Equipment:
-Leatherman Swiss Army Knife
-Journal
-Supplement Pills
-6 MRE's
-4 Canned Foods
-Pack of 10 Batteries
-3 Litre Bottles of Water
-Duct Tape
-Crowbar

Weapons: Shane owns a Glock 19 he purchased years ago for home defence. He's used it at the range twice in the three years he's owned it. He's no marksman, that's for sure.

Family:
-Boone - Alive - Pet
-Anna Cook – Deceased – Mother
-Jane Hughes – Unknown – Girlfriend
-Michael Cook – Unknown - Brother

Past: The most important detail of Shane's past is that he has almost always been depended on. His father ran out on his mother and their two children when Shane was eleven years old and it was up to him to pick up the pieces. This meant from a very young age the boy often had to look after his little brother Michael whilst his mom went out and made a little money. Even whilst she was there Shane was still looked to for support on most days. She worked long, hard days so when she did get home she was often physically exhausted and simply couldn't handle the emotional burden two young kids put on her at times. Shane did what he could. He was a blessing actually. A sweet kid who liked to help people.

It wasn't until he was a teenager that he realized how this kind of lifestyle affected him though. It was difficult as all hell to balance school and home work and for the first time he thought he understood why his mom was always so tired when she was home. Still, Shane did what he could, doing his best to do what was best for Michael and his mother. As soon as Michael hit sixteen though Shane pretty much decided his job was done for now. He had taken care of people his entire life and his life had suffered for it. All you needed to do was look at his finishing school grades to know that. So, he took some time off. He got a part time job to line his pockets a little and began being the reckless kid he never got to be. He partied, he got drunk, he got high, he got into a drunken fight or two and within three months he got bored. This crap simply wasn't fun any more.

So, once again it was time to be responsible. He buckled down at work getting a full time job and started giving his mom a little bit of money every time he got paid. Until he found his own place to live at least. It didn't take him too long. After that though he once again found himself unsatisfied. With such a crappy ending to his school career the next step seemed clear. He needed further education. Unfortunately you apparently have to have a certain grade of education to get a certain grade of further education. That and a fuck ton of money, because America, duh. The only thing Shane was interested in that he really had the grades to get into was a philosophy class, so get into it he did along with maths and English. It wasn't too bad in the end, he got more for himself down on paper and hoped it would have some sort of good effect. Eventually it did and he began working as a school counsellor. That pretty much lead to where he is now.

Other Interesting Information: Everything under equipment was bought just in case. It's all in a backpack Shane put together for if the worst were to happen and he had to live a certain way for a week or two. Of course, that's not going to happen, right? Also might be worth noting that the backpack is stored in his garage at home, so nothing mentioned is on his person currently.

Just gonna throw this up. Haven't done the writing example yet but I'll get to it later, so for now it's a WIP I guess:

That's fine McHaggis.

Also, posted my characters. I might have some kinks to iron out with them. And I'll get around to posting a writing sample at the bottom of their post when I finish with the other rp post.

I promise I'll get around to reading everyone who posts their CS later. I have my responsibility to the other rp :) So I'm off to write up a post.

NAME: Heather Joyce
APPEARANCE:
Heather has slightly tanned skin, hazel eyes and long, thick black hair. Her hair is often completely straight. It is rather healthy, due to her overly-organic diet. She is around 5'6, and is rather fit appearance-wise. She doesn't have stamina or strength, but she will often be the last one to get sick due to her healthy eating habits. When looking at her face, one would notice that her eyelashes are long and her eyebrows are well-shaped. She takes very good care of her features, however, she has scars on her cheeks from severe acne that she had when she was a child. Now, she has very dry skin and often-chapped lips.
AGE: 25
PERSONALITY: Heather is a very curious person. This childhood trait stayed with her even after she grew up. Heather is often unconfident and quiet, and may have trouble taking orders. When receiving orders, she may take it in a hostile way and become defensive. When encountering a new situation, Heather will often step back and reflect silently on a logical option. She is not one to discuss issues and would rather think about it instead. At first sight, Heather might appear fussy and rigid. On the inside, however, Heather feels guilty easily and is very loyal and honourable.
OCCUPATION: Herbalist
ETHNICITY: French (born in France, but moved at the age of 15.)
EQUIPMENT: Heather often carries a large, brown shoulder bag filled with herbs and medicines. She also has a special bowl in which she can make ingredients to help calm down stomach pains and other pains inside the body. She doesn't usually deal with external wounds, such as cuts, but can make pains feel a bit better while also boosting your immune system and increasing your energy. In her bag, she also has scissors, a small knife, tape, a herb species book, and a magnifying glass, all for herbal medicine uses.
WEAPONS: Heather played softball as a younger girl, so she has a metal softball bat. That is her only means of offence, as she prefers to sneak rather than fight. She has a small knife in her bag to cut herbs, but can also be used in desperate measures.
FAMILY: Her parents live in France, since they moved back after she turned 20, when they realized she could live in America on her own without their help. She often wonders about them, and the rest of her family who lives in France. Everyone in her family except for her and her sister live in France. Heather and her sister live in different states, but Heather believes her sister is dead due to her sister's timid nature. (during the zombie apocalypse)
PAST: Living in France, her family was very big on gardening. When she was young, she was forced to take care of her grandparents while her parents were in university studying medicine. Heather began to study herbal medicine, since she lived in the countryside with no hospital within a two hour range. Her grandmother was her best friend, and when Heather was 8 years old, passed away in the house. Heather greatly regrets not being able to do anything and blames herself for it, even though her passing could not have been prevented.
OTHER INTERESTING INFORMATION: She was born when her parents were 30. Her parents, who moved to many countries, only settled down and decided their job until after she was born.

Awesome character! He's accepted. I definitely see how he would have worked extremely different from your present character in the other rp.

EDIT:
@Maestro
I posted this almost exactly when you posted your character and then swished off to the bathroom. I'm like halfway in the shower right about, so don't fear if I don't get to your character till about an hour or so from now.

Here's my CS; I do intend to put the writing sample up once I finish it tomorrow. I must sleep now and I think I may put up a second character as well. Note that this is the unedited version, but I also intend to edit it out thoroughly when I edit my writing sample into it. Also, before this comes up, no he has no combat oriented training aside from experience while drunk or just extremely angry and maybe a self-defense class or something stupid like judo when he was a child. *Shrug* Something excusable that would still put him in the civilian classification and among the people were just extremely lucky.

EDIT: Uh, I also just happened to notice who Jack's kids were named after... er... so it is coincidence that Percy has a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird in his backpack.

NAME: Percival Chevalier

AGE: 32

PERSONALITY:

Among most of the Chevalier family, Percival was the most reserved, quietest of the bunch and unmistakably one of the brighter children—that wasn't saying much, as many of the children the Chevalier parents had took both parents smarts as well as their piercing blue eyes. However, Percival was among the more stereotypical type when it came to his intelligence. Of all he children, the quietest, most concerned about intellect stood out the most. Percival was the black sheep and he didn't quite understand why that was a bad thing throughout his life. It was something he took pride in and found solace in, as well. That's where his parents expected the oddness to stop, but Percival continued to surprise them. The boy seemed to have a knack for surprising a lot of people and his sudden interest in faith was among that and it went beyond simple thoughts of studying theology to becoming a big part of it. Of course, that was a good way of excusing his blunt honesty and the lack of skill he had interacting with people, as well as the willingness to simply listen and hear people out rather than talk about his own problems. There was a lot of love Percival wanted to give and through God he could give it, however way he was allowed to. There was always sincerity in Percival's eyes, to the point of unabashed honesty and whatever Percival did it was genuine and thought out. Percival, however emotional he was (though he didn't show it), was calculating and logical most of all. His reasons for doing something were tied to deep thoughts and feelings but his actions were always deliberate, purposeful, and most of all they were ran through his mind countless times until everything was reasonably worked out.

But the intelligence and the silence that followed him came at a cost. Percival wasn't the type to wear his emotions on his sleeve and did his best to keep his face as far from emotion as he could. Everything he had was bottled up inside and eventually would fester until the lid popped and with that came small bouts of alcoholism that he'd indulge in, even as a priest. He'd be reprimanded, sure, but on could never truly stop being a priest in the eyes of the Catholic church and he'd always have a duty whether the church he found a home in would accepted him or not. Fortunately for Percival, the church he found was more than willing to keep him, as they obviously needed all the help they could get. And though he hid his emotion, Percival cared just a little too much and a little too often he'd do things wholly unnecessary, sometimes even cross clear cut lines to help some people. Percival, especially as a priest didn't much care for any gratitude or appreciation that he mostly didn't receive. He did things because they were right, though some of those things could be misconstrued to harm him more often than not. Not only that, when pressed, Percival had a fearsome rage and a propensity for violence; however rare that was, the line became blurry when intoxicated and when those rare moments of weakness and vulnerability came crashing down in a bottle of whiskey, he'd find himself the next morning bruised and pained all over.

OCCUPATION: Ex-Catholic Priest, Former Military Chaplain, Currently a Librarian

ETHNICITY: Caucasian/Creole/Cajun

EQUIPMENT: A Bible, To Kill a Mockingbird, Rosary Beads, Three Bottles of Water, Half filled Thermos of Tea, Crackers, Tylenol, Rubbing Alcohol, Few Wraps of Gauze, and some Bandaids, all in a Backpack

WEAPONS: Screwdriver, Cleaver

FAMILY:

-Mother; Lorelei Chevalier: Deceased
-Father; Daniel Chevalier; Deceased
-Brother; Landon Chevalier; Deceased
-Brother; Ronald Chevalier; Deceased
-Twin Brother; Jared Chevalier; Missing
-Sister; Elise Faraday; Missing

PAST:

Life was quite simple and easy before the what a lot of people have come to know as the apocalypse. Percival's family was well off, or a tad more so, as his mother was running for governor of Louisiana, whilst his father maintained a television network from New Orleans. Residency was often either a European villa, a large estate in southern Louisiana, or the coast of Los Angeles. From the beginning it was obvious that family didn't quite mean as much as people around them or as much as his parents made them out to be to the public. They expected much of him and his siblings, but found not many of them to be acquiescent to their wants and needs. Everyone was expected to at least follow somewhat in their footsteps, finding private schools and expensive colleges in their future, but finding experiences that twisted and changed them, either for the better or worse.

Among his siblings, Percival was the 3rd eldest, in a sense, with his twin a few minutes behind and his sister the last of them. Not many years separated them, which didn't much matter as they hadn't seen much of each other in the years they'd all left consecutively for different colleges. It was Percival who fell out of step first, though, finding solace in God as a parental figure rather than his own. College was slow and, though he studied hard, he found no satisfaction in any of the classes he took, any of the courses. Most of is time spent outside of class was inside a nearby Catholic church, confessing, praying, and eventually volunteering in hopes of learning more of religion. He found satisfaction and comfort in the priests and clergy of the church and most of all in the word of God. Percival soon fell out of college, finding that priesthood held a better future for him. He'd spent months pondering over the decision, of the lengthy process before finally succumbing to his decision. Without anyone to dissuade him, Percival found his mind to be in full control of his choices, and his wants and desires were clear to him after so many years.

The decision was made immediately before he was released for winter break, avoiding the scrutiny of his parents and sibling as he traversed back to the church to learn of the process to be ordained for priesthood. After a few years spent under the church, he'd finally become a priest, telling his parents and family members the moment he could—their objections were duly noted and later rejected. Those years were extremely fulfilling to Percival, where he kept strictly in line under the Catholic church and helping those he could within the limits of his priestly duties. However, through the years of service, he quickly became complacent sitting in one place all of his life, making what he deemed as little progress in the lives of people who were as complacent as he was. He offered his help whenever he could, through counseling and confession, yet found it increasingly unsatisfying as people turned away without much of a care, or at least not as much care for what they did and their consequences as he did.

It wasn't until further years that he decided to leave the church he'd settled in to join the army, but in a more unconventional sense. He volunteered as a military chaplain and found himself in the same place he was in the church before, except this time on a military base states away from the church he'd made a home in. Not long after, however, Percival found himself oversees preaching to soldiers in a base near Yemen, hearing confessions, counseling, and just generally being there. He found a place among the medical troops, learning basic and practical applications of medicine and how to treat injured soldiers out in the field through the months he lived there. It wasn't long until, after transferring to a base nearby, that he was taken captive with a garrison running through desert roads. They'd tripped a road mine that flipped the caravan on its side, leaving may with minor injuries and two crippled and in need of serious medical attention. A group of men rushed from where they'd set up post, gathering the men and women as quickly and roughly as they could and taking them back to a small fortress of an outpost. They'd treated the severely injured men just to the point where they'd live, albeit painfully, and through them in a cell.

By the Geneva Convention they could not necessarily hold Percival captive; in fact, he was free to leave and with supplies too whenever he wished. They set a room not far from him, however, if they could not harm him physically, they would eventually break him mentally. He was witness to the brutal methods of torture and interrogation the soldiers under his care were subjected to. When it came time to feed him, he was set just a few feet from the slop fed men and women to feast on whatever the captives gave him. While they starved and were tortured, he was given a warm bed, food and drink, and a shower, and it broke him more than he'd like to admit. Percy did everything he could to help them, prayed with them, heard their confessions, gave them what food and water he could, and dressed their wounds with strips of his clothing. But there's only so much a man could take and he was on the verge of leaving, unable to handle watching them all slowly die. It wasn't until they'd killed a woman he'd just been caught treating that he finally snapped. It was inconceivable how he could just stand there and do nothing while good men and women were tortured and killed before his very eyes.

Every rule so clearly laid out by priesthood and the Convention he was bound to he broke almost effortlessly. However untrained he was for combat, he'd made a spectacle of killing the lone guards that were ordered to watch over the prisoners with just the pure rage built up over the months he'd had to suffer mentally. And by then Percival hand no care of what would happen afterwards. He freed the soldiers, treated the ones who could barely stand, and gave the two weapons he'd taken from the deceased guards and given them to the most capable of them all. It didn't take long before they'd left the compound that held them and found themselves setting out to the nearest military outpost they could—the captives had failed to blindfold the priest they'd taken with them, somehow certain he'd not leave without being completely and utterly broken. Or maybe they just didn't estimate his own intellect. He did what he could for the injured men and women through their journey, having lost only one to the heat and blood loss and pain before ending up where they were intended to be in the first place. And when they did, the celebration was cut short the moment they were asked of their escape; there was no denying the military chaplain that cared for them was immediately under scrutiny. Percival hadn't planned on denying anything and was discharged, though after a lengthy appeal by the high ranking officer captured with his garrison, the discharge was reduced in severity to a general discharge and was released from duty almost immediately.

Though spared the issues of being dishonorably discharged, Percival was still wracked with the shame that came with being literally thrown out of the military and the mental instability that he suffered at the hands of captives who were never truly meant to keep him prisoner. His family wasn't quick to accept him, or at least none of his parents did, and Percival found himself too ashamed of what he'd become to return to either the church or his family and thus cut off connections after telling his family that he was, in fact, perfectly fine. However, he did settle in a few towns around the country, until eventually drifting into Atlanta and finding a place in a small library in the least busy part of the city, with a humble apartment in what he'd deemed a relatively safe area of Atlanta. He did make enough money as a librarian, which meant he was required to rely at least a little on the family fund issue under his name.

It wasn't too long after what he'd determined a quiet life to fall completely to hell, though by some fortune, the whole world fell with him.

OTHER INTERESTING INFORMATION:

-Considered to be celibate/asexual
-Closeted homosexual
-Was in charge of a group of children in the library when things in Atlanta went to hell. He would prefer not to talk about what happened, but it's obvious it took his toll on him.
-Is still considered a priest in the eyes of the Church, but has all but lost faith. Prefers to believe there is a God, but that faith was waning years before any of this happened.
-Does have a soft, almost non-existent Cajun accent from living most of his childhood in southern Louisiana. This also means he picked up a lot of Creole during his childhood and sometimes slips slang words into his speech when drunk, enraged, or simply extremely comfortable.

Aw shucks *blushes* I'm glad you like him so far. I was just hopin' to live up to all the other great characters (shameless flattery and ass-kissing mode activated). I just need mah sample post up and it'll be all ready for the scrutiny and ruthless nitpicking! ;_; Also, hopefully, my second character will be on par with ol' Percy. I also hope I've made him interesting and unique enough without crossing any weird lines... I also may have inadvertently made him our Herschel. Just connected those lines like an hour after I posted him.

On a side note, I was thinking of giving him a cat, but all these dogs. Didn't wanna stretch food so thinly and I didn't want to put Percy's pet up for food should the group be straining to provide. ;_; 'Cause I have a feeling, outta all of the pets, the cats gonna be offered as sacrifice first and then WHATTAYA KNOW? Food is miraculously found the next day...

Also, I ramble and get carried away a lot. I think Percy's whole Past section is testament to that. Hmm... I just hope it's not rambling + useless information. I'll save that for when I get carried away in the OOC... *le cough*

Ha, a cat would be pretty damn cool, but yeah, I too am worried about the fate of Boone. He's a big dog, and chomping on walkers doesn't seem too healthy, haha.

Rambling is awesome. At the minimum it gives everyone something to read. :D

So far I really, really like you character! And you're not rambling too much. Also spoiler, I guess: our first antagonist is going to be a priest, so I'm going to love to see how things go down between your character and him.

But anyway, about the rambling, like Barks wrote, it gives everyone something to read!

This is my first attempt at a High Casual rp where I haven't written the most elaborate of biographies (though I've been steadily expanding on personalities in a word document and should probably cut down, or at least resist the urge to change the present ones, considering the amount of characters I have; people might get bored with them LOL). And I willingly admit I've been prone to rambling before sooo...this is a change. And I suck at biographies; that's part of the reason I ramble. I used to make my characters extremely average and ramble to fill in bio space. So I'm going in extremely loose and hoping to build upon my characters. And really focus on in character writing this time around, rather than OC information, which I think I suck ass at; even worse it's been like a 100 hundred years since I participated in a High Cas/Advanced rp and I'm rusty. Like REALLY rusty. And that's bad...(supposed English Major here).

But either way, before I begin OC rambling, great character. Jack has a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird on his person as well, so maybe they can bond over it. I eagerly await your writing sample while I postpone my own due to homework and laziness.

Also worth noting, I've changed Selina to be a second generation biracial, as well as of Indo-Caribbean descent rather than South Asian. And I've seen that McHaggis has added Malik's sister. We're probably going to have a big group of characters, what with my 1 billion ones, and already some of you have applied with more than one or are planning to. So I think that second group will have to hold off for quite a while, until I'm confident I can handle that many rpers + that many characters.

But, ANYWAY, I'm off to pretend to write a thesis and probably work on my writing sample.

That's what I was supposed to have posted yesterday, but then things went crazy LOL.

Oh and guess what I still haven't done....*cough*writingsample*cough*. I've been reliving high school literature and been badly preoccupied with reading To Kill a Mockingbird again. And soon I'm going to pick up Beowful which I'm not looking forward too...
