Ragna always hated the beginning of the year assembly, it was boring and dull and she always knew what her father was going to say before it. It was because the Huldrekarl often practiced his speech with her as his audience. Ragna sighed, leaning back in the bleachers and flicking a blonde bang from her face. At that moment, her father walked onto stage – okay, maybe that was a bad term to describe it; he more like sulked his way onto the stage. He picked up the microphone and cleared his throat.
“Welcome, students, to another year at Agartha Academy. It is great to once again reside over you precious, precious students.” Despite how genuine he wanted it to seem, Principal Eld couldn’t help the sarcasm drip off his words. “For those who are a first year here, I am Principal Eld and I expect nothing less than perfection from the lot of you and –.”
He went to say more, but a startling shriek interrupted him. The walls shook and the smell of blood permeated the air, strong and overwhelming. Ragna felt the need to throw up and a girl beside her did upchuck her lunch. But it was the dread that was the worst. Fear gripped at Ragna’s heart and her skin became cold, her arms and legs trembled. She couldn’t stop it. Ragna has only read about this particular scream in books, this haunting scream that was horrid for anyone to hear. The shriek of a Banshee.
Someone in this room was going to die.
