Did a bit of fix on the opening page, hopefully it looks more organized now.
Also I suggest that after the obvious copy-paste we can add details we always wanted to mention.
For example a page on nuclear energy, giving a brief intro and then explaining who uses it and how it's standard or even low tech in this setting.
I would also dare Duck to make a page on magic. That would be fun.

The idea is solid, but this is one step away from Kardashev-style technical tiers that will only be given legitimate worth by a handful of player nations that effectively set an extremely inconsistent technological standard for "advanced". I'd argue antimatter reactors are innately inferior to thorium fission reactors or fusion reactors due to their need for active containment units that, should they fail, will result in the utter destruction of the reactor and anything within an X mile radius, but I doubt anyone cares about any of these factors because the superficial Space Opera standard can easily be invoked as a suitable (to me: sloppy) counterargument.

Stick to submitting your nations to the wiki. Leave out the categorizing.

You're talking about real world science but lets not forget that we are talking about a universe with magic and which at one point had nazi ponies as a faction. Some people want to go hardocre sci-fi, others just want to goof around abit. Lets not critique others because they are not playing it the same way you want them to play. Wouldnt it be boring if we got bogged down in a science arguement each time if someone releases a new technology/gimick in the game? Lets just enjoy playing the game okay? :)

I am in favour of some science and logic. Lets not have people breaking the laws of energy conservation left right and center or summoning super demon god of the 15th dimension of super awesomia who will snap his fingers and annihilate your entire empire while bringing about the end times for everyone in the universe except his chosen etc, but we don't need hard science. I am certainly not going to go super in depth with dark energy reactors, I'm just outlining the basic process with a little bit of technobabble worked in and a slice of handwavium. Teleportation? Technobabble and handwavium. Plasma weapons? Technobabble and handwavium. Dark energy blades? Technobabble and handwavium. Power armour? Technobabble and handwavium. Beam rifles? You guessed it, technobabble and handwavium!

Silly, impossible science is the name of the game. What's too silly is decided by either consensus or more likely the word of god.

It's not about me trying to dictate what you can and cannot do with your civilization, but it's more about preventing newcomers or existing players from feeling as though they need to have X fictional technology to have a chance at being relevant in the setting (or if they need to resist attacks from players that have Gypsy Danger as their standard armored fighting vehicle; thank goodness this hasn't occurred yet). In the end, it becomes a contest in seeing who can wank the hardest. It turns into a roleplay where the hyper-advanced magic-flinging empire is the standard.

That's ridiculous.

There's handwavium, and then there's abusing handwavium; having unrestricted access to pseudo-science in a collaborative writing exercise requires one to possess a smidgen of sincerity and restraint.

...Or all measure of consistency and sense can be thrown into the trash and 45 megajoule handguns can be written off as being entirely capable of destroying super heavy tanks but they can somehow fail to penetrate a 15th century suit of plate armor when the writer demands it.

Some people want to go hardocre sci-fi


The current atmosphere of the RP doesn't even allow this particular style to flourish.

@ASTAI would question if you actually read the RP because from what I see it wasn't the issue. Other things like X player holding out even if outnumbered or such did but that has nothing to do with technology. Generally the game seems to go with the assumption that everybody has comparable power. Although having certain techs or such is indeed needed like how previous discussion went about magic resistance. Truly, this game is far from perfect but what you do is basically whistle blowing and throwing around claims that make it obvious you miss the point.

Well, hard sci-fi and interstellar travel in general just don't work. That's one reason.
What ASTA asks for is something else and rooted in a different issue, though.
He confuses the dressing with the content.
It really-really doesn't matter much if you have an antimatter or nuclear reactor, if it produces the kind of massive power our warships do it makes a huge explosion and the operation of such technology would need containment fields regardless.
Similarly it doesn't matter if it's a railgun, coilgun or advanced chemical-propelled firearm. If it shoots a 5g projectile at 2km/s it does mostly the same. Detailed ballistics can of course matter.
Basically unless you are a hard SF writer and calculate nearly every tech details, the mechanism of your weapons or other tech are just a "dressing", a technobabble. It may get relevant in special situations and generally it's advised to make your technobabble semi-convincing and at least rudimentarilly understand what they mean but that's about it.
A raygun that vaporizes peope does exactly that. Regardless of what explanation you give, if any.
This is still true if you try to use "realistic" methods. This is just the way fiction works.
Something which ASTA apparently cannot understand.

My faction also uses relatively hard science, or at least uses entertainment media science consistently. I'm actually make a lot of calculations for my tech and if you ask me I can either read up or quickly estimate the detailed specs.

While I'm not a large fan of it, I don't have a particular bone to pick with magic. It only appears on my radar when someone calls upon it as a "Get Out of Jail Free" card in nearly every unfavorable circumstance that happens to befall them. I'm not saying that this has happened extensively in this RP, but Apollo's gripe with it illustrates an instance where it was used to easily circumvent an obstacle (though seeing as how it was Duck who was the perpetrator, I'm not exactly surprised).

Generally the game seems to go with the assumption that everybody has comparable power.


That isn't what I've seen from Andromeda or its sister RP, but I guess I'll take your word for it.
