This question is probably going to seem stupid, considering that computers have yet to get very far in PoW, but...

Has genetic engineering gotten anywhere yet? Or, for that matter, has DNA even been discovered?

Depends on what you mean by genetic engineering.

Do we have agriculture? Yes. Do we have the capicity to parse apart genomes? Hell no. Not even close.

In a sense humanity has been practicing genetic engineering for a long time. See: selective breeding and husbandry. But can we splice unrelated genomes together in PoW? As Vilage said: no.
