@Pepperm1ntsYes, I am. I was unaware that so few Romans actually took part in the battle. I was under the impression that there was a significant amount of them.

@TheSovereignGraveThey never really had any direct contact, but in the Roman expansion east and the Chinese expansion west, they indirectly connected with each other.

@Dinh AaronMkFair enough.

Alright, Zhizhi wasn't the best example. Time to go history digging again.

Just making sure, we are all aware that the only point I am trying to prove is the use of crossbows as opposed to regular bows, specifically for my nation only, right?

Oh yeah, I can dig crossbows on horseback. I never really had a problem with it to begin with, just wondering why they'd use them instead of regular bows since they'd be far more convenient. Since crossbows are slower to reload, and the kind your warriors would be using wouldn't pack as much of a punch than those big hand-cranked ones.

The implementation of the crossbow was supposed to be both an advantage and a limitation. It is an advantage because crossbows generally pack a greater punch, and are a lot easier to use and master compared to regular bows. The limitation would be the reload speed, obviously, but also the mechanics involved are much more complicated than the regular bow.

In summary, it's an attempt to appear somewhat different to everyone else, while also trying to keep the last of the Medieval Europe elements that still influence the nation.

So far as you are aware of the limitation, everything is peachy.

With crossbows, the main advantage is simplicity. Most cultures that employed mounted archers had them train from the time they were children. Even the best bowman on foot, like the longbowman of England and Wales, required years of training to be effective. A crossbow, on the other hand, can be used by any dumb motherfucker who can look at something and pull a trigger. I know this, because I own a crossbow. My father also happens to own a longbow. Both are modern fiberglass builds, but even then at least the differences between the two styles are noticeable.

If the skilled professional warriors are all doing something else in his culture, then it is possible mounted archers are being recruited from a lower class of riders. If they are not proficient with a bow, they won't be shooting bows from horseback and a crossbow (which doesn't require proficiency) could easily be substituted.

Is there a rule regarding post length? I personally strive for 1,000 words at a minimum, but I noticed others seem to be doing much more than that.

As has been mentioned before, frequent posts(whoops) are wanted more then high quality long posts. That doesn't mean short 2 paragraph posts are exactly... good. I rarely do forum roleplay is why my posts are small and of lower-quality sadly, but if you can and want, make them long and detailed.

I once wrote a post half the length of a novella.

There isn't a size minimum anywhere in here, or in any of my other RPs. I know Vilage has been trying to find ways to keep his posts clipped low, he complained that he had to find a point in his Gul party posts to make them more digestible.

1k will be good.

Personally, I find it easy to ramble, so I could easily get posts that go overboard. I always assume too long of post will cause everyone to skim it rather than read, so I try to keep mine between 2-4k. But that is me. If you do small snippet scenes, you could pull off something like 500 or 750 words. 1k is probably best, but if you are writing complete scenes you'll probably want to get at least 1k.

The important thing is the ability to convey the details and character decisions in a way that is believable, and that you are descriptive enough for us to know what exactly it is you are describing.

Yikes, so this week is coming down to be busy (though on the bright side, I got a job at the deli, so it isn't all that bad!)

It'll take a while for me to find some time working on my country's history and whatnot. Making the sheet is arguably the most time-consuming part.

Might have missed it, but did we talk about population size? What are the other territory's sizes? Originally I planned on saying Verigarde had 170,000 inhabitants altogether, with some 12,000 dying in the unification process, leaving the territory with 158,000. After 100 years of peace, I figured the population from there would be around 220-250k. However, how do these numbers compare with other countries?

The RP isn't very statistic based so I'm not putting a lot of emphasis or desire to account for numbers. You can if you want, but I'm not enforcing it.

The point might also be made that often in the case of the period censuses may not often be regular and conducted at times that would answer a question at the moment of the regime at the time. Like if they really needed to know how much money or men they could muster in their defense. Arguably for smaller kingdoms or tribal-oriented states there wouldn't be really any incentive to provide a central census, since either the resources aren't there or groups may move around too much.

It's something I'm not going to stop you from doing, if you want. But I don't place emphasis on doing so.

I am mostly asking for army size reasons. Considering my nation is not at war, their army size would be fairly limited. I use a percent rule for calculating typical sizes, with 2% of the total population for peacetime, 5% for wartime, and 10% if the war goes belly-up.

With these numbers in mind, my lowest population (220,000) would mean the army size would be as follows:
4,400 for peacetime
11,000 for wartime
22,000 as a last resort
I personally like these numbers, as they are nothing that can be used to launch a world war, but are big enough to defend their territory. Again, though. I have no idea what other army sizes look like for other nations.

They can only get to twelve. After which they find a different member to count something on or drink.

At least according to the Greeks.
