Bio: If their espers are artificial diamonds, then the Gemstones are natural ones. That was how Academy City reasoned away the existence of these natural espers. Yet not all diamonds are created equal, while some can go for millions, others are cheaply sold for use in industry. These diamonds, known as borts, may sell for a measly 30 cents per carat, far from the luxury their companions enjoy. Thus it can be further reasoned that such borts may be a phenomenon that exists within Gemstones as well.
Enter Tommy Woo, a hapless newcomer to the city who has already been graced with an epithet, The Worthless Gem. Tommy's power is virtually non existent, and indeed may never have been discovered if not for a freak accident at the age of 14. The day started out like any other, young Tommy had just returned from his daily training at Ms. Zhang’s Fifth Street School of Wushu and Dance on 42nd and 3rd Street. As always he was immediately put to work helping with the family noodle business. His family had emigrated from Foshan, Guangdong, China to The Bronx when Tommy was merely 6 years old.
As Tommy was crafting new recipes for his mother and father he suddenly noticed his hands glowing green just as his father choked on some water for a split second. At first Tommy did not piece the two events together, however further experimentation soon revealed that at 00:52 EST each night, when Tommy’s hands glowed people stopped breathing for a fraction of a fraction of a second. This new discovery changed the course of Tommy’s life.
When he first revealed his newfound power to his parents, his savvy father saw the potential for a whole new world of business. Always well informed about the world, Tommy’s father had heard of a little place in Japan called Academy City where such powers were commonplace. Thus his shred father immediately shipped him off to Academy City in hopes that he might nurture this gift and further promote their family noodle business: Woodles. At first researchers greeted Tommy with open arms, as their preliminary tests revealed large amounts of AIM emanating from his body, a key trait for Gemstones. However that was the extent of Tommy's specialness as his power is so worthless that it could only be qualified as a Level 0.
Thus continued Tommy's story of crippling debt.
Now stuck in Academy City, Tommy continues his father’s wishes using a motorbike he received from his Uncle to deliver Woodles’ noodles to all customers in need for only a measly 200 yen. However when he’s not cooking or on deliveries, Tommy makes sure to keep up in his studies at Noriaki North where he has somehow remained unnoticed by his peers, although rumors of a unique Gemstone Transfer student run rampant. Still, no one has realized that this student is merely the weak Level 0 Tommy.
Oh and Tommy still makes sure to check in weekly via Skype to continue his lessons in Kung Fu with Ms. Zhang.
Esper Power: Level 0 Auto Asphyxiation - As a Gemstone, Tommy is in possession of a power that has eluded the explanation of researchers. However, this is due in large part to how incalculable it is due to its reliance on arbitrary limitations. At precisely 13:52 AST(Academy Standard Time), Tommy is capable of stopping the breath of any person he sees for precisely .0032 seconds. As one can imagine, this power is useless. In addition, Tommy claims that his hands glow green everytime he activates his power, however no researcher or outside observer has ever been able to verify this claim.
Skills: As a result of his hard work and persistence, Tommy Woo is an excellent chef specializing in the many options provided by Woodles’ Noodles. Working as their only driver has also made him quite adept at zig-zagging through rush hour traffic ensuring the speedy deliver of his goods. Years of training have also left Tommy Woo adept at Southern Style Kung Fu and Dance. Other than that, Tommy Woo’s only real skills exist in his ability to work hard and think on his feet to best serve his customer.
Equipment: Tommy Woo has an assortment of cooking utensils that leaves at home. Other than these prized utensils and the motorbike loaned to him by his Uncle, Tommy is remarkably lacking in personal goods due to his crippling debt. His motorcycle is a Honda CD 70 the workhorse of Asia.
