Rebirth
The United Kingdom of Dain and The Rebel Alliance of Shintie are two groups of planets that have been at war for almost two hundred years. In an effort to bring a stop to the UKD's endless need for power, the RAS stepped up before they could gain full control.
The United Kingdom of Dain believes in controlling and dominating of all the planets. They believe in predestining people's life course and controlling such things as where they work, who they marry, how many children they have, and what position they will have in society. However, they are generally more advanced and their machinery is more efficient. Many things in the entire structure of the UKD's society are computerized and done without ever being touched by human hands.
The Rebel Alliance of Shintie believes in the freedom of all the planets. Freedom to chose for yourself what you want to do with your life and for each planet to make their own decisions. The RAS is generally a rugged, rough cut, society. In comparison their technology is crude and highly mechanical. Portions of the alliance are more inclined to agricultural and natural means of living. It is not uncommon to find a surprising lack of technology on certain parts of the less developed planets.
The war between The U.K.D And The R.A.S has ravaged on for nearly two hundred years. Many planets have sought freedom in the R.A.S and there by gained their protection. While others have gone to the U.K.D under the promise of global peace and a stable economy and there by falling under their domination.
At the beginning of the war only the planets of Dain and Shintie were at war, but as the war wagged on, other planets slowly but surely fell into it. The war has lasted for so long that both sides have begun to lose sight of what they are fighting for and are now just fighting.
Through the course of the war many new technologies have been created. Most of which to try and gain an advantage over the other side with. Though given time the other side always finds a way to acquire it or something very similar to it.
The R.A.S had been working on a bold but seemingly old idea, the ability to never die. So with the consent of both the military and the government the Rebirth classified project was put into place. After many, many years of research, observation, experimentation, more research, more experimentation and an abundance of tests, they were finally ready to put it into play. The first official successful case was that of Rin Monroe, A 29 year old female fighter pilot. After the success of her case the government decided that others should be added. They gathered pilots, soldiers, scientists, high risk government officials and others with “Undocumented rank and assignment” to participate in the operation. After more were added on it became more common and more widely recognized. So the project could no longer be “Top Secret”. While names and specific information was still kept classified the actual project itself became more of a common knowledge. So as such it didn't take long before the U.K.D started their own similar operation called the Living project, about 12 years after the start of Rebirth. Now Rebirths and Livings are commonly known and used.
Rebirth uses a process known as downloading. In this process every person which is a part of the Rebirth program has their consciousness constantly uploaded into the system. When a host is killed their consciousness is downloaded into a clone body which is kept at the nearest available station. There are many download stations, but not everyone has host bodies stored at every location. Most people will only be able to use stations on a ship they are assigned to or else the stations surrounding their home / resident planet. Regardless of where a participant dies, they will only regenerate at a station which holds their host clones. Once downloaded, participants are returned their full personality and memory. Physical alterations [e.g. tattoos] the host may have sustained are not transferred onto the clone though. Rebirth clones are exact replicas of their hosts, but it is common for physical disabilities or impairments to be corrected in the clones, such as substandard vision or scar tissue. Until the download takes place the clones are not conscious or aware of anything. It's as if they are a shell waiting to be filled. Some side effects may be experienced for an hour or two after downloading. Side effects generally consist of dizziness, nausea, headache, blurred vision, and a feeling of displacement.
