I'm actually going to have to cut you short right there especially with the Amazon expansion idea. To be honest, the RP was never set to go outside mainland USA, which I'm now thinking of changing. But going all the way into South America? That's definitely a no go, I'm sorry, doesn't matter that it would happen in a decade or so. If that was the case it'd literally soon be "Faux Americas recolonize the world" simulator and that's just glossing over all the other nations in South America which would certainly not enjoy someone coming in an claiming all their rubber. Same thing with rare earth elements in Africa, you would have to go through at least half a dozen African warlords just to step foot into a mine.

As much as this is going to sound somewhat mean, a British empire-styled colonization and trade empire is simply impossible with your current nation and something which I am not going to just allow. Britain had swathes of populations which they could use for colonists while still maintaining a strong military, something you don't have the luxury of since even with an unrealistic 100% enlistment rate, you would still have a smaller military than just about everyone else. And as for the last bit, once again another nation can just subjugate you and demand the goods at extremely tiny prices or nothing at all.

Yeah, I expected that. It was just a general aim that I thought I should announce, to make some decisions more realistic (i.e. with an ultimate goal in mind).

I thought Bermuda would be fine, since it's not far off the US coast anyway. The other islands (except the Bahamas) would not feature, but are mentioned to explain the relatively high manpower of the nation.

I've basically completely renovated my app since I realised it would be better to have a kind of 'Atlantic Island Confederation' things, so I now have a larger population and military (both of which I shall tone down, actually - I think that the food shortages would have decreased the population more than that).

And I was not planning to 'colonise' en masse - as you say, my population and military are far to small for that nonsense. Think more Venice's 'empire' in that it focuses more on trade and commerce rather than political control.

Also, I understand your point about defence, but it is my thinking that most nations have more trouble to deal with at home than cross a Bermudian-dominated ocean to reach the Home Islands. The Bahamas, however, I see your point. Take note of the population increase I made when I realised; 'hang on, there are also people in the Azores' and so forth.

@NerevarineSomething I'm already seeing as an issue is what you ahve listed under resources of bio fuel and farm machinery with weaponry also being a slight concern.

As I've stated in the past along with [@Dihn AaronMK], any hope of producing anything close to modern machinery on a level which you can trade with it is pretty much gone and whatever is still working is not traded by anyone. Unless you happen to mean stuff like plows which is more fesable.

For weapons its not as much of a concern as melee weapons are not hard too make and muskets and bolt actions aren't complicated to gun nuts. Semi-auto might be a bit harder but its still reachable. Reconstructing a machine gun on the other hand is a very, very difficult process but can be done assuming you have the time, resources and skill to do it.

The biggest concern is the bio-fuel, I know I've talked to someone else about this with the help of Dihn, but bio-fuels in significant quantities are an unfeasible idea. The primary reason we can develop bio-fuels today is that we have enough food to feed ourselves and farming no longer takes dozens of people to do. However, after the end, people now have to farm by hand and food is much more scarce; people don't want fancy bio-fuel, they just want to be fed.

However, I am willing to give you some leeway with food production, just not the bio-fuel stuff, and let the soil of the land you own be less irradiated and more fertile (given you're basically on a river) thus letting you have surpluses of food for trade. And seeing some places routinely go through famines and food shortages, that's nothing to sneeze at in terms of trade opportunities.

Thanks for the feedback, i'll make the edits asap

@Nerevarine Oh, I need to buy your wheat please. Would you like sugar?

Obviously, you're inland and I'm an island, so we may need to negotiate with... is it the Badyoyo Tribes, at the mouth of the Mississippi?

Oh definitely, i'm sure I can work out some kind of port access deal with them.

Name: Liberty Commonwealth
Flag:
Nation Type: Tribal Commonwealth
Claims: Pending - Maryland, DC and Virginia, roughly
Terrain: Warm and relatively dry, but interspersed with the occasional toxic death trap. Rains are random, either being very rare and light, or heavy and continuous, but tends towards the extremes

Government Type: Aristocratic Republic - every tribe elects an Aristocrat who rules them for the rest of their life. Every Aristocrat gets a seat on the Grand Council of the Commonwealth. The Council then elects a Cabinet of Chieftains, who officially lead the Council. The Cabinet then elects the Head Chieftain, the de jure leader of the Commonwealth. The Chieftain then hands his Cabinet their roles.
Capital: Ashington - set in the ruins of Washington DC.
Head of State: Head Chieftain Michael K Simpson - very liberal and open-minded, he wishes to re-establish pre-war America under the Commonwealth banner.
Other Important People:
Deputy Head Chieftain: Margaret O'Reilly - her job is to play devil's advocate to Simpson. As such, he deliberately hired a very conservative, reactionary minister to better govern the country. Though she respects Simpson, she disagrees with most, if not all, of his actions
Councillor for Justice: Stephen Davies
Councillor for Trade: Alan Carpenter
Councillor for Foreign Nations: Juan Martinez
Councillor for War: Chloe Valentine
Several NPC Tribal leaders
Population: 2.4 Million
Attitude Towards Evols: Wary. Not willing to trust them entirely, but not so suspicious as to actively attack them.

Economic System: Serfdom - The elected Aristocrat controls their entire tribe. The leader is thus responsible for the whole tribe's production.
Resources: The Commonwealth specialises in scrap metal and machine parts, with Arms Manufacturing being their biggest industry. Close behind are the Shipbuilding, Tool-making and Construction businesses. 'Metal from the Commonwealth' is synonymous with 'high quality' which is lucky since they have very little else. Coastal regions use fish to boost the economy. Most of the Commonwealth's food comes from the Confederate States in the south, much to the Commonwealth's chagrin. The individual member states also have particular specialities, just not those of great importance.
Currency: Commonwealth Dollar
Technology: They are somewhat advanced. Old Machines have been stripped down for scrap, but the workings of them have been researched and they are developing new machines. Lack of coal and oil means that wind and water are the main sources of power. Solar panels have been found - some of them actually work - but the people know far too little about how they work to recreate them.

Official Religion: Anti-Abrahamic
Religious Information: They have several bibles, and some old-world currency that says 'In God We Trust'. However, they have come to the conclusion that God was a demon who promised to protect the old world. Since the Old World crashed and burned, they have come to the conclusion that God is either dead - which means there is a mightier force out there who should be feared - or a traitor who cannot be trusted and must be opposed. Furthermore, they believe God is an actual living being and will do all they can to and and kill him for his crimes. Furthermore, since it is Satan/Lucifer whom always opposes God, some Satanic sects have started cropping up. They are yet to take control of parliament, but they are becoming powerful.

History: After power in DC was broken and the government officially shut down, parts of the East Coast shut down with it. Entire cities fractured, dividing into various factions. The subsequent 'civil wars' lowered the population significantly, till there was nothing but a few lucky or powerful survivors. These survivors grouped together in anarchic clans, working together to keep each other safe.
Some bright sparks settled in the ruins of Washington, which they called Ashington. Foragers and looters raided the old buildings - the White House, the Senate, the Supreme Court, amongst others - and brought back interesting documents and papers that had survived. The Ashington settlers came to the conclusion that Old America had a Commonwealth, where the States worked together to protect and better each other.
Not wanting another bloodbath, the Ashington Settlers started reaching out to other nearby settlers. They explained how the system worked and invited them to join. Long story short, the ball got rolling and the newly-christened Liberty Commonwealth has begun advancing along the coast. It is their goal to one day have the whole of America under the banner of the Commonwealth once again.
Culture: The Commonwealth has two kinds of people - Aristos, and the people that aren't them. If you are an Aristocrat, you have a duty of care over the common people, who in turn promise to work your land, serve in your armies and obey your laws. This often translates into 'You vote for an Aristo and then do whatever work they tell you to do'. Commoners are hard-nosed, pragmatic people who work their entire lives - they have little love for the lazy and the weak. The only exceptions are the elders and children - old people have earned their rest and they are not so jaded as to rob children of their childhood.
Aristos, under the unique system of the Commonwealth, are either particularly passionate or particularly lazy Commoners. If a tribe is smart and lucky, they will pick a good, compassionate leader who actually looks after them. But tribes do elect, far too often, tribe leaders who are lazy, incompetent and privileged.

Military Numbers: Most of the population owns a gun, but there are only about 30,000 official servicemen and women. In emergency situations, tribes may be forced to levy a certain number of warriors to protect the Commonwealth
Military Units: Your average soldier will wear fatigues, a chestplate (typically metal) and a reconstructed Service Rifle and Pistol. Commonwealth weapons are simple, reliable and cheap, though far from tbe strongest. Levies often don't get the joy of what little armour the Servicemen use.
One exception to the rule is the mystical Peacekeepers. Peacekeepers consist of maybe a hundred men, all clad in advanced military armour and carry pre-apocalypse weapons P90s and Anti-Materiel Rifles. These men are elusive and secretive, serving essentially as the government's answer to the SEALS.

@BrithwyrDefinitely seeing the Fallout vibes (also the conservative in power have the last name of O'Rely ). However, there are some issues:

1) Reduce the size of your claims; I know for a fact that someone is going to be North Carolina.

2) It feels just a bit too utopian. Like I said before, most nations are either tribal or some bastardization of the USA; your's kinda feels a little too perfect or at least the way you described it.

3) Once again, modern technology is a dream long gone. None can really reproduce anything close to modern tech or even Cold War era tech. And as for your power, while rudimentary industrial revolution water power and simple windmills I can allow, I cannot allow solar. As state before, they are too advanced for anyone to just pump out and its the same story with things like modern windmills and hydropower plants.

4) For the last bit, the Talons sound less like the CIA and more like SEALs; the CIA is the US's intelligence services and the way your described them sounds a lot more like elite special forces. Also, I recommend changing the name of the Talon Company as they are not a company but an official organization.

Yeah, sure :)

Though your worshipping the 'Founding Fathers' (known as ' The Rebellious Malcontents' in the UK :P) may cause some friction, given the strong Bermudian cultural links to Britain, as well as the long alliance (in fact, longest alliance in history) between England/Britain and Portugal, thus making the culturally Portuguese citizens of the Azores and Madeira rather Anglophile. But I'm sure we can overlook that :P

Am I accepted then?

1. Kay. How about the sort of Maryland/Virginia region?

2. I was kinda basing it off the old Iroquios system. Probably made it a bit too democratic

3. The idea was more the salvage some old-America technology, but I'll happily peel it back.

4. Whoops! Sorry about that. I was thinking SEALS but couldn't for the life of me remember their name.

1) You can have the Maryland/Virginia region, just don't follow exact state lines. Be hipster like that

2) You could easily turn it into an oligarchy veiled as a democracy or republic. Or add a really inefficient bureaucracy and some members of government who don't really give a shit about their jobs.

3) Yeah, I say turn back the clock a little. You're welcomed to still deal in machined parts like cogs and gears and springs just not on an industrial level if you know what I mean.

On @Iluvatar's trade prospects:

Trying to force yourself to go that far is an expensive proposition for a nation so loosely scattered and owning so few natural resources of their own. The islands may have forests but they're not necessarily hardwoods for the sea and there's the hard choices of trying to produce staple foods and cash crops on limited space. You're operating on space more limited than the rest of us and expecting to build really long and complicated trade-routes into possibly hostile waters. After all for rubber you're looking at literally sailing 4,000 km from Bermuda to the largest post at the mouth of the Amazon Basin (Belem).

Where as the straight distance from Bermuda to Savannah to trade rum and sugar for staple crops is a much more reasonable 1,500km.

You're trying to jump far too quickly to something far too distant in order to claim something to make you seem better as opposed to trying to involve yourself just with North America and forge something actually cool. It's also simpler and would be much better to accomplish with present technology.

Actually, Company is a legitimate unit in military structure, most often commanded by a major or captain.

As a non-independent unit they form a division of a battalion or regiment. But can act independently.

The modern military company became popularized during the reorganization of the Swedish Army in 1631 under King Gustav II Adolph. For administrative purposes, the infantry was divided into companies consisting of 150 men, grouped into regiments of eight companies. Tactically, the infantry companies were organized into battalions and grouped with cavalry troops and artillery batteries to form brigades.

From ancient times, some armies have commonly used a base administrative and tactical unit of around 100 men. (Perhaps the most well-known is the Roman century, originally intended as a 100-man unit, but later ranging from about 60-80 men, depending on the time period.) An organization based on the decimal number system (i.e., by tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten-thousands) might seem intuitive to most, if not also highly logical, based on the common anatomical counting device created by using the ten digits of the human hands in numbering objects, animals, people, etc. Therefore, to the Romans, for example, a unit of 100 men seemed sufficiently large enough to efficiently facilitate organizing a large body of men numbering into the several thousands, yet small enough that one man could reasonably expect to command it as a cohesive unit by using his voice and physical presence, supplemented by musical notes (e.g., drum beats, bugle or trumpet blasts, etc.) and visual cues (e.g., colors, standards, guidons, etc.).

Furthermore, recent studies have indicated that humans are best able to maintain stable relationships in a cohesive group numbering between 100-250 members, with 150 members being the common number (see Dunbar’s number). Again, a military unit on the order of no more than 100 members, and perhaps ideally fewer, would perhaps present the greatest efficiency as well as effectiveness of control, on a battlefield where the stress, danger, fear, noise, confusion, and the general condition known as the “fog of war” would present the greatest challenge to an officer to command a group of men engaged in mortal combat. Until the latter half of the 19th century, when infantry troops still routinely fought in close order, marching and firing shoulder-to-shoulder in lines facing the enemy, the company remained at around 100, or fewer, men.

The advent of accurate, long-range rifle fire, repeating rifles, and machine guns necessitated highly dispersed combat formations. This, coupled with the advent of radio communication, permitted relatively small numbers of men to have much greater firepower and combat effectiveness than previously possible. Companies, however, continue to remain within the general range of 100-250 members, perhaps validating the premise that men fight best (as well as live, work, socialize, play, etc.) in organizations of around 150 members, more or less.

Get mil knowledge

That said "Talon Company" sounds too Fallout and should be renamed.

I do plan only to involve myself in North America and the Caribbean. I hope to make a deal with the nations on the Mississippi to secure a stable supply of wheat to Bermuda via the FSA constituent state of the Bahamas. The Azores, Madeira, and the Canaries, which will likely not feature in the RP (since it's supposed to be confined to continental North America anyway) are presumably supplied from European sources, but I shan't even consider the details of that for fear of dragging the RP into a trans-Atlantic one.

I already discussed the whole 'Amazon' thing with the GM, and we both agree that it won't happen within the timeframe of the RP.

Trade will be largely confined to two main routes:

- Bermuda directly to the American mainland, and thence either north to Nova Scotia or south down the former US coast.
- Bermuda directly to the Bahamas, and thence into the greater Caribbean region or along the coast of Florida to the mouth of the Mississippi.

Anything other than that is too far and dangerous, as you say. However, as an island, Bermuda has devoted more time and resources to making sea travel viable than the continental powers, counterbalanced by the weakness of the army.
