Xavier always knew what he was, he had been born and raised by two wolf parents in Alaska, parents who had pressured the boy to make wolf friends, so he did. Xavier grew up with Emily and Jacob, two wolf like himself and together the trio were never apart, sharing cigarettes under the bleachers, tasting different types of alcohol, passing tests, and even on the summer holidays they were all together here at Sanctum with their families. It was perfect in a way, Xavier watched in complete bliss as Emily and Jacob fell in love, first as teenagers, then as adults and eventually he was the best man at their wedding at 22. A year later life seemed completely perfect, he had just finished his degree to become a nurse, Emily had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl who they named Amelia and they still enjoyed their lives as wolves unknown to the rest of the world. But as they say, nothing that beautiful can last. And on the day after Xavier’s 24th birthday, his perfect little sanctuary came crashing down. He’d been staying at their house and had gotten up to go to the toilet at three in the morning when he smelt them, humans. With no time to think they broke into the house and Xavier jumped into a nearby cupboard, clambering to the top and hiding behind a couple of unpacked boxes. There he listened to the attack for the next hour. He listened to the screams of his friends as silver bullets were unloaded into their chests and heads, all too fast for them to heal. He then listened as one of them received a phone call to say that their parents had been taken care of, and finally he listened as the monsters left the house, blood on the bottom of their shoes.
It took an hour for Xavier to creep out from the top of the cupboard, half an hour to be able to come to terms with the mutilated bodies of his best friends but only thirty seconds for him to remember Amelia. Emily had been smart, she’d managed to hide the little girl. When Xavier went looking, he found the little blonde baby lying in her blankets under a series of loose floorboards, with tears in her eyes and her hands extending for her uncle.
With a heavy heart and blood still under his fingernails, Xavier vowed to never let anything happen to the little blonde child.
