The idea came to me recently about reading other people's public 1×1s. I myself would like to know what others' views are on the topic. For the most part I prefer doing my 1×1s in private, but I am open to doing them in threads. I kind of like the idea of people reading what I write. I've always wanted to be an author since I was in 4th grade, so this could offer a kind of taste to what being a published author is like, so to speak.

Any other opinions?

I never even thought about reading a 1x1 thread. I guess if they didn't want others to read it they would have made it private, right? Like, nothing bad can happen from reading a public thread, right?

For science, I'll go check it out. Be right back.

edit: I now feel dirty.

I never read other people's rp's. To me RPing is about writing a story together. It might be a crap story, but still. :P Though I don't mind if people read mine. The stuff I wouldn't want others to read I keep private anyway.

If I read somebody's interest check and like it, I might read a few posts from their public thread. But I often learn more about the person by reading their ooc posts in their 1X1 games.

No, I'm not stalking....

I used to love reading other people's roleplays, now not so much. Too focused on my own. But I do usually read it to my roommate who enjoys shaking his head at how absurd some of my RP'S can get, got plenty of good inside jokes out of it. :P

Not remotely interested in that sort of thing. At most I might check a potential partner's writing that way, or whether they're likely to ditch, but I would never do it just to read. There's so many books I've yet to read, written by skilled authors and actually edited, so the idea just baffles me.

It's not that I don't want to read others 1x1 threads because I'm sure they're really good, but as a popular meme says:

Ain't no one got time for that shit.

So, bottom line? I would love to, but I have my own life outside of RPG, and the time I spend on here will be dedicated to my own rps. But hey! It's cool to those that do read other people's 1x1s. And anyone happens to read mine, then let me know. :3

Like some here, Engel and AT for example, I don't.

I only glance through a thread that isn't mine. if I need to get a feel for a potential partner's consistency, style and other writing habits. I also don't care what others are writing. I have a life, I don't have time to really keep tabs on other stories I'm not part of. But I do know others enjoy it and I think it's great when roleplays can be shared and somehow inspire or encourage onlookers/lurkers.

I really do love reading RPs in general, good 1x1 interest checks or advanced checks typically cause me to look at the actual roleplay...

Okay.. I cannot stop staring at @Genkai's signature while I type.. it's kind of distracting...

But. anyway, sometimes I will just go through the forum and read random ones that have a nice title. But I really like reading Original stuff, not fandoms and whatnot, because as an author I love getting a wider view of other's ideas and a lot of times I am impressed.

If I come across a RP that's about a niche pairing (Black Butler for example), I'll take a curious peek, but usually head off elsewhere afterwards. I find it rare to come across characters that are like mine. It's here that I realise each and every character, be it OC or fandom, is unique in their own way.

1 x 1's are generally weird as fuck tbh

how the hell does anyone find the time to make 100+ posts nearly 1-1.5 thousand words in length each. the effort put into it alone for even some of the more subpar 1x1's is unfathomable.

and cringy

But, I mean, some are okay.

I'm curious, for those who do read other's 1x1's, what is it about those that would make you read them over other RP's you aren't involved in?

This may just be me here, but I think the intrigue of reading any rp that one isn't in - be it 1x1 or group - is that people are wanting to read a potentially great story like a fan. I personally don't for the reasons I stated in my original post in response to this topic, but I know some that read other rps that they aren't a player of like fans read a book series, watch a TV series, or watch films: because they are fans of either the GMs or the concept behind it.

Oh yeh, I get that idea and that is really cool. But I was curious why people were singling out 1x1's for that honor. I haven't paid much attention to that section so I didn't know if there was some neato secret I was missing out on.

I read others' 1x1 and group RPs on occasion, but normally, not so much...

Generally, I feel that the 1x1 RPs are just too silly and thrown together to keep with, as I've found that a lot of them are just for the purpose of sticking a couple of hot characters in a loose plot and seeing how soon they will fall 'in love'. I'm not into reading others' fantasies, so I stay clear of them by keeping my nose out of 1x1 RPs that aren't my own.

I've had what I'd call 'readers' on some of my early stuff on another site, sometimes 6+ at a time when a partner or I posted a new piece. Even now, every once in a while when I check out those old stories, I often find that there are still people viewing them.

It is partially for this reason that I like doing public RPs, as both the feedback and idea that others are enjoying the story as much as I am helps me grow as a writer.

Sometimes I'll use it to get an idea of what a person's writing style is like (90% of all 1x1 readings), or skimming roleplays if i'm looking for potential partners (rarely). I have been known to read one or two though... mostly because I happened to be in the 1x1 section at the time or the title caught my interest. There's no real logical reason why i'd read a thread over a book other then "I saw, I clicked, I left" and just... that thing with the internet where you lose time doing things unproductive. Although, a couple times i've been pleasantly surprised, or inspired, or impressed. I love reading RPs people have gotten into with lore, plots, pictures, and multiple NPC characters.

Oh and once or twice checking up on some ooooold roleplay buddies i've known for yonks - there's something comforting about checking in with a friend and seeing how their writing has developed, or if they're still into the same stories.

I actually enjoy reading some of them. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure. Some of them seem so silly or poorly put together, but that's part of the fun. I enjoy having to figure out what the actual hell is going on.
