Huh, interesting. I was not aware of that fact.

Honestly, the impact on mood in general is a really cool thing about sound... and light... and our senses in general, really. It's all the little things that help make an environment a place you want to stay in.

For instance, I just wrote a research paper on the effects of light on fear, and my research had my stumbling into a lot of stuff on how different kinds of light can increase or decrease anxiety, or how street lights reduce fear of crime even when they don't reduce crime itself. It's pretty neat stuff. (Fun fact, though: fluorescent lights are apparently shit for your mood / stress. IIRC they make you feel drained.)

Added some more information on my explorer and species. Feedback is welcome, of course.

Wait a second. Have we not already made contact with everyone else yet? I just assumed we had, given how these empires are long-established.

I honestly don't know. Hael hasn't told me anything on that, I would assume only those with shared history would know each other.

I would prefer if we ran into each other throughout the actual game but Queen Raidne has a point, none of us are the new kids on the block, or, only a few of us are anyway. We're clearly long-established space-faring empires.

My empire is composed of cast-off bits of other empires, or at least, that was my original idea. So some form of contact would be nice.

I think it wouldn't be too strange for Ch'ak to have not made contact with anyone's nations yet, on account of only being a single system. Though there'd likely be rumours of it; and I mean I wouldn't be averse to contact having already been made.

And I actually kind of assumed everyone was at least aware of each others' existences.

You should meet Kazzlehorf.

Kazzlehorf gives things out for FREE!

Like Zippa drinks and canned Kazzlehorf. (Yes, I am aware of the cognitive dissonance 'canned Kazzlehorf' is given that it's made from the flesh of non-Kazzlehorfs)

Well, the New Alleghian Republic is the second-most populus empire in the Alpha Quadrant with its nearly 400 billion inhabitants and is the dominant trade power within both the Core Worlds as well as the Inner Rim. Consider that they were also at war for centuries with a similarly-sized entity whose borders alone stretch all the way into the outermost extremes of the quadrant, I see no reason why the NAR shouldn't be well-known amongst most every species in play, let alone empire.

Welp, I'm off to Morocco chaps, I'll be back on Sunday!

The thread will probably be another 500 posts deep by that point ._.

I'll give you a small update for anything important, when you return

I'm actually keeping track of everything important that's said in the OOC. I've making a neat little list xD

I'll be here, awaiting PMs :)

So will I. ;)

<Snipped quote by Lauder>

In my humble opinion I think that'd be rather easy for Short's enemies to get around with a pair of highly high-tech ear plugs.

In my humble opinion, you're totally underestimating the power of vibrations on parts of the bodies other than the ear.

Intense enough sound can literally break your bones, regardless of whether you hear it or not

Sounds is a very possibly lethal weapon.

Yep. But the Namilee could probably just use it to a lesser extent, so that the worse it does is cause some vomiting and ear-bleeding: enough to incapacitate without killing.

@Hael

Before I get too far into formatting the Commonwealth for this, I thought I'd run their stock NS by you first to see if you have any issues with them.

Potential problems:

1) Their size. The Commonwealth's defining feature is that it's a sprawling regime full of oppressed non-citizens and dissenting factions, held together by ruthless pragmatism and bits of string, frequently on the edge of going up in flames. For that reason, I would like to have the 100 systems you mentioned as the upper limit, if that's acceptable.

2) Their engine/power generation tech. I'm not good with the phsysics end of science. I don't think gravitons actually work that way, I don't know if anti-gravitons exist/are theorized to exist, and I have no idea if positrons could be usefully weaponized. It's all just technobabble to vaguely explain things I just think are neat. Take a look and let me know. (It's down in the "Military" hider).

3) Biology and History. They're skimpy. I'm not that keen on getting in depth on their biology, because it's not important to me in the Commonwealth's case. History, I think I'll add a little more, but the Commonwealth is a relatively young nation, they're making their history now. My Government and Society sections are nice and long to compensate, because that's the stuff that interests me most about the Commonwealth.

EDIT: Orite and FTL. Yeah, that's flexible. I'm pretty fond of the tech behind it, but the actual effect can be whatever. I could literally find+replace every instance of the word "surge" and replace it with "warp" and not compromise anything.

I'm with @Lauder: the gravitons/anti-graviton techs are impracticable as weapons or engines, as are the positrons (plus they're just plain OP). You'll have to do something different, unless you're okay with your ships weapons constantly destroying themselves and being overall a pain-in-the-ass to operate

I'm not saying positron weaponry is impossible, just... unlikely.

If it helps, here's a short list of weapons I've seen people using thus far:
-Particle weapons
-Plasma weapons
-Railguns/mass-drivers
-Lasers
-Missiles
-NUCLEAR missiles
-Nuclear shit in general
-Torpedoes
-Coilguns
-Techno swords
-Possibly sound?
-Bioweapons, such as disease
-And probably a few others that I've forgotten. Our weapon field is very diverse.

Who you've had contact with is up to you and whoever you are claiming to have contact with, but yes, you can assume most empires are generally aware of eachother, at least to some degree. Some may even have shared history, like the Federation/Xim war.

Empires who are on opposite sides of the map (I still need all of you to do the map, by the way ) may have only heard rumors of eachother and never actually met, while isolationist empires (Kazzlehorf, for example) is probably known to exist by MOST other nations, but not all of them. If an empire is really isolationist and not near anyone else, than it is fully possible that many player-nations have simply never even heard of you.

But for the most part, you can assume that the majority of empires have had at least some contact or heard rumors of most other empires. Space if big, afterall, but rumors of giant nations tend to spread pretty fast.

In the case of empires knowing each other:

As the Namilee never really had an empire and I assume their territory is somewhere around the border of X'cor space, I'm going to assume people might know OF them, and they might know OF other species, but they're relatively isolated historically (sans from a race they uplifted - which probably got eaten by the X'cor) and maybe exploring civilizations.

Basically, they might have met people, but as they were never expansionist... Well, they never expanded much.

Oh yes, the Namilee should be an exception to that. I imagine that most people they meet will either have never heard of them, or only heard vague rumors of ex-slaves wondering the galaxy. Namilee will probably be rather new to everyone.

I was mainly regarding full nations, not small groups of ex-slaves who rarely ever left their homeworld.

EDIT: Although, if you want, you could have met some of the nations. I would prefer you to have never met the Xim, however, as I have something planned that requires the Xim having no knowledge of the Namilee or their genes (I was tempted to say "technology", but then I remembered that they Xim don't give two shits about technology compared to how much they care about biology )
