Pokémon: One

As you opened your eyes, everything became clear. The sun gave a yellow tinge to your surroundings, and the summer heat caused a drop of sweat to run down the side of your body. Hadn’t it just been pale blue? You must’ve fallen asleep in the middle of the night. The temperature almost lulled you into a second, mid-morning nap. Your eyes fluttered a slideshow of light and dark and began to roll into the back of your head. Almost. Your skin tightened and your chest heaved. You shot up in bed and your eyes widened, adjusting to the light. The adrenaline in your veins returned as your shaking hands gripped whatever might be lying about. You threw whatever coverings that bundled you in the night and your feet hit the ground running, literally soaring out of bed. Was that the smell of pancakes downstairs or in a house across the road? Where’d you fall asleep again? Who cares, today was the day! Your eyes darted about the place and you grabbed whatever you thought might help you in the blink of an eye. Personal belongings, a pack, some snacks, you even found a Potion hidden around the place and stuffed everything into some sort of container. The zipper groaned as you heaved backward with all of your might to get it closed. You nearly sprinted away before turning back. You collected all of the cash you’d been saving and stuffed it into your pockets.

Did you say goodbye to your parents? Were they here? Were you in a home? Out the door you went. Your shoes slammed against the dirt and kicked up grass. With your gear in tow, you took your first steps to becoming a Pokémon master.

Redorchard

It was an annual tradition for Professor Ficus to hand out Pokémon to those who wanted to begin their adventure out into the Huji region. He gave each and every trainer a Pokédex to record all of the species, and it was each trainer’s job to record the Pokémon they found in their journey. What excited you? The Pokémon? The Pokédex? Getting to explore the lands? Making friendships along the way? Whatever it was, that energy propelled you forward onto the horizon.

The town was simple but efficient, plotted out as if it were a large orchard itself. Each section, whether it was a house, a park, a school, or something else was allotted the same amount of space. Between each area was a dirt road, made of a mauve-colored clay stamped down over the ages. You could run a footrace across the whole town, like right now. Most of the roofs around town had a red hue, except for the small Pokémart at the SE corner, which was blue with a similar-shaded Poké Ball front and center. Sometimes, there were promotions going on if you were lucky. A lot of trainers didn’t come through town after they’d left, though, and there weren’t too many top-shelf items. Most of them were potions and Poké Balls, with a few cures when they were recently re-stocked.

The town had a sort of hidden valley feeling to it, as titanic trees surrounded the buildings and could be seen along the dirt footpaths, no matter where you stood. They were viridian right now, but right when autumn approached the leaves would become more crimson and brighter in color than the top of a Poké Ball. You probably knew the surrounding woods by heart at this point, having played in every tree and jumped in every pile of leaves. That is, if you were from the area. You didn’t notice them today, though. No, your eyes were dead set on reaching the center of town: the Professor’s research laboratory.

You hadn’t quite reached the building when you faced the back of a shorter individual, and the back of someone taller in front of him, and someone in front of him… all the way down the road and cutting a corner to the front entrance. You weren’t even late, and this year was already packed with beginner trainers. There was another person that arrived nearly at the same time as you. The two of you were a unique bunch: one with a large, blue ponytail and large black headphones. The sound of raging guitars and pounding drums roared from the speakers. The other one of you had two long, golden braids that cascaded down the front of your body with orange ribbons at the top. She was the shorter one by far, standing at about the shoulder of the first girl. For a moment, you felt as if there was going to be another individual join you, but nobody heeded the instinct. The two of you had never seen each other in your entire lives. The two of you had arrived at the same time: how did you decide who joined in line first? There was a large, rotund boy with glasses sitting against the wall of the research lab, but he didn’t seem to be bothering anybody. Though, you wondered why he was there if he wasn’t in line.

Dewmeadow

It was an annual tradition for Professor Dogwood to hand out Pokémon to those who wanted to begin their adventure out into the Huji region.

Everything was open in Dewmeadow, with at least a quarter mile between each building. Water droplets kicked up onto your pants leg as you sprinted up a viridian hillside and overlooked a flat plain of white flowers, rustic homes, and the occasional, strong oak spouting up from the ground. The town didn’t have many people since it was so far out into the country, but it made up for it with the amount of land it had to offer and the bonds of rural community. The crisp, summer air breezed through your air and you took a deep breath. It revitalized your energy. You took shallow, quick breaths. Time to run again.

There wasn’t really a natural border to the town. It sort of just kept going and going until trees became more dense and finally the short grass gave way to some dirt. Whichever way you went, you’d end up hitting the route out of town. You knew the place by heart, having climbed every tree and rolled down every tiny hill. That is, if you were from here. There were always some indentations in the path where wagons came through for trading. There wasn’t an official Pokémart in town, but you could usually find a travelling merchant around the place offering basic wares. If you were lucky, he had something special for beginning trainers, like a Great Ball. You’d never seen them have one in stock, though.

Where you were headed was north, a straight shot through the fields and prairies separating you and the Research Lab of Professor Dogwood. You sprinted past all of the waving hands and familiar faces cast through windowpanes. The summer heat attacked the bare skin of your neck but you kept running. A drop of sweat fell into your lower eyelid but you wiped it away and kept going. And going. And going. Twenty minutes of running and your two, heavy feet slammed into the dirt beneath grass. You doubled over, panting, sweat raining from hair. You looked up. Two others were there, right outside the door. The three of you were an interesting crowd. The first of you had short, black hair, a skull hairpin, and large purple eyes like galaxies. She wore proper, black and white attire, fitting into the meadow setting nicely. The second of you had wild, untamed white hair and pale skin to match the hair. He seemed foreign, not of this place, had he moved here from somewhere else? The third and final of you had the eyes of a super nova, nearly half the size of his tiny face, and long, styled blonde hair to boot. His white tunic ended in purple sleeves and continued into brown trousers. Mara and Rowan very likely knew each other in this tight-knit community, but the third individual was likely a stranger. There were no others about the door: how did you decide who would go in first?

~Lynn Haywood~

It was morning. Lynn had been up for a few hours, as was her standard routine. Already did a quick jog around Redoarchard that morning, as was also her standard routine. She may have some unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking enough to kill a small pokemon, but that didn't mean she had to let her entire body go to hell, now did it? Nope, jogging and exercising was a definitely therapeutic to the girl. Had to stay in mostly top shape after all, otherwise she couldn't reliably beat some jackass up who she didn't like. That said, she did feel like she was forgetting something.

Something important.

She lowered her headphones from around her ears as a bead of sweat dripped down her forehead. She had just finished taking a rather relaxing morning shower to wipe away that swear from jogging, so the unwelcome drop of sweat made her frown, though it was quickly dealt with thanks to a towel hanging not far from her. Not important tough. What was she forgetting? Something important...something...

oh.

right.

pokemon.

"Oh fucking hell. Why'd I forget that for?!" She angrily huffed to herself as she took a look around her room. A small place, she had rented just for today, actually. She had only been in Redoarchard for that long, after all. She arrived yesterday evening, and the small Inn was the only place where she could stay. Not that she minded, she had plenty of money...sort of. 500$ should have been enough for now at least.

Wasn't time for thinking about how she got here though. Lynn threw the towel into the restroom, and quickly threw on her clothes, including her rather warm fur-trimmed jacket. Not the smartest choice for summer, but damn it if it didn't look cool. Sometimes, looking cool trumped comfort as far as she was concerned. As long as it didn't get some absurd temperature, she'd be fine. Maybe she could get an ice pokemon to start with, anyways, and just have them act as a tiny portable A/C unit.

...pfft, that was actually a pretty neat idea. She might actually do that.

Thoughts for later.

For now, she put on her boots and raced out the door at a full sprint. No way in hell was she taking any more time than she had already wasted. It was already noon almost, and she was certain she was late so the blue haired girl booked it to the center of town. At least, she would have if there was a massive line in front of her. She almost bowled over some girl with braids in the process.

"Fuck..." She cursed under her breath as she saw the line, resting her headphones around her neck. Well, whatever. She got here at the same time as braids, so she could at least get in front of her without too much trouble. So without a word to the other girl, Lynn got in line in front of her. They got here at the same time after all, and if the girl had a problem with it, she didn't particularly care all that much.

Honestly though, just having to wait in line sort of pissed her off. She had never had to do that before. Most of the time, she moved herself to the front since most people tended to sort of...just let it happens. Otherwise, she'd have her friends teach them some 'manners' about how ladies should get first dibs on anything.

...she brushed the thought out of her head, and instead put her headphones on her ears. She hoped this line moved fast, or she'd make it move fast. As if to emphasize her impatience, she folded her arms across her chest, giving a glare at the back of the head of the guy in front of her, almost as if she was trying to will the line to move faster through sheer force of annoyance.

Mara Scelus
Dewmeadow
Current Team: --
Inventory: Potion (1), Pokedollars (500)

Mara groaned a bit, and stared up at the ceiling. She heard rumors about a sickly boy who made a huge discovery in mathematics by watching the flies moved. Expectantly, she gazed upwards, looking for something similar to happen.

"Reason one hundred sixty seven to leave this place…” Mara muttered softly as she averted her gaze, glancing at the clock. A pang of alarm went through her when she not only read the time, but realized what it meant.

On the day she would finally be able to leave this rural town, she overslept. Her parents would never let her hear the end of this, she realized with dismay! Jumping out of bed, she quickly got dressed, putting on a respectable black and white blouse, partnered with black jeans and boots. After running a comb through her hair, Mara slid her skull pin neatly into place, and grabbed her small backpack of belongings.

Hesitating over a picture of her dear friends, she shook her head, and left it behind. She’d have no need for it on the road ahead — there was too much to see, too much to do, too much to learn! She wouldn’t have time to reminisce on old friendships! Besides, it was highly unlikely that Rob or Christine would ever return to Dewmeadow.

Dashing down the stairs, Mara pushed open the large french doors of her home, hardly sparing her parents a second thought. They’d already said their goodbyes the night before, and predictably, her father had attempted to persuade her to pursue a more sensible career. Mara had heard nothing of it, already dreaming of the sights out in the world to see. She raced her way towards Professor Dogwood’s laboratory, kicking up small clouds of dust from the dirt that she disturbed. Laughing a bit, she couldn’t help but see the irony—at the same time that she was kicking up dust, water struck her jeans, time and time again!

Entirely out of breath, ages seemed to have past by the time she arrived at the laboratory. She had hardly given any attention to everyone she passed—they were all boring, people she already knew. They had nothing new to offer her—no new tales and stories! She’d known each and every one of them since she was small. The familiarity drove her insane—she wanted something new, something strange, something better!

Stopping in front of the door, she quickly glanced at the other two would-be trainers. She knew Rowan, and frowned a bit with disappointment. Why they couldn’t have had new people coming, she didn’t know… Sure, Dewmeadow was rural and out of the way but…

She sighed, attempting not to look at the blonde haired child with disdain. It wasn’t his fault that they’d known each other for years, even if he was three years her younger. As she avoided Rowan’s gaze, she caught the eye of the stranger, and a smile broke out on her face. However, she quickly bit her tongue, glancing down at the ground before looking up once again with all the courage she could muster.

”Where did you come from?” Mara asked bluntly, hardly caring who would enter the laboratory first.

There was someone new in her small town of Dewmeadow. She looked at him like a puzzle, waiting to be solved and then tossed away once completed. Things were finally becoming interesting.

Rowan Branchers

_____

Dewmeadow

Rowan had woken early today. Of course, it's the day when he'd be given a Pokémon and would be allowed to adventure far beyond the world of just small but large Dewmeadow. It contained so much space, it practically contained all which a child could normally desire out of the world. And yet, Rowan would be experiencing a much, much greater world.

His parents had already prepared breakfast for him and his bag stood ready by the door. Oh, they didn't have to, but of course they had to. They're his parents. The two of them, while worried about the rumours about attacks on young trainers, were proud of their son and would not stand in the way of him trying to accomplish his goal in life. Hugs were shared, “I love you”s were spoken, and Rowan was soon on the way.

Ah. He almost got teary-eyed as he ran through town and waved at faces he knew which he wouldn't see in a while. No matter. THIS WOULD BE GLORIOUS!

Rowan arrived an hour early. He'd woken up way too early with way too much excitement and had arrived way ahead of time. Still, weather they were here when he arrived or weather they arrived after, Rowan would still smile happily at them.

'Hi, Mara!' Unless there were, like, no boys his own age or if Mara approached him, Rowan likely wouldn't have made a close friend of Mara, but they did know each other in this community and such. And today, they'd be becoming Pokémon trainers together. In Rowan's eyes, they were already AS CLOSELY KNIT AS THEORETICALLY POSSIBLE due to this! 'Let's do our best!' His eyes were shining as he said to her. He didn't particularly note if her eyes were avoiding him.

'…' The other boy... Rowan didn't recognize him. He felt a little shy about addressing him, but this was such an important moment in their lives, no way he'd just let it pass without contact.

'H-hi, I'm Rowan.' He'd say, holding out an hand to shake. 'Well, um. Good luck to us all, eh?' Rowan smiled widely, his excitement and happiness still shining through his shyness. And yes, Mara's question was relevant. Rowan would be listening attentively.

Abigail Lowe

Location: Redorchard

Abigail was prepared. And by that, she meant that she couldn't fit any more candy in her bag if she tried. She'd spent a lot of time thinking about the journey, so she'd had a load of time to think about her food. With that in mind, she'd made sure that she had all the important food groups included in her bag. Lollipops, sherbet, chocolate, hard candy and of course fruit-flavoured gummy sweets to make sure she was being extra-healthy! Some of the chocolate had fruit and nuts in it, too, so she was basically being super healthy. Take that, mom and dad! Not wanting me to travel on my own!

That reminded her that she still needed to tell them that she was leaving. She'd wanted to, okay? Like, super wanted to. But it wasn't like they'd let her leave just because she asked, so she had to make sure she was ready to go before she told them anything. Before she left her room, she took one last look around before grabbing a packet of Gummy Wurmples for the walk to the lab. She then shot down the stairs like a cannonball and went straight to the kitchen, launching herself into her parents with a flying hug.

"MomdadI'mgoingonajourneytobeaPokémonmasterandyoudonthavetoworryaboutitloveyousomuchthanksforlookingaftermeandstuffbye!" Her parents were too shocked by the amount of words coming out of her mouth to really absorb what she was saying, so that was an opportunity for her to run out of the door and down the street as fast as her short legs and an unreasonable amount of sugar could carry her. As soon as she reached the end of the path, she slowed down to a fast jog and headed in the direction of the lab.

Wow, that was a long line, huh? She'd been sure that there weren't even this many people her age in Redorchard. Still, she wouldn't be that far from the end of the queue and she had about half of her Gummy Wurmples left, so she was pretty happy. At least she was, until some-blue haired girl nearly knocked into her.

She managed to get out of the way just in time, but she'd lost her balance a little bit and dropped her packet of sweets. The world seemed to go in slow motion as the packet flew out of her hands, spilling across the ground. She watched in horror, before turning angrily towards the other girl with an impressive scowl on her face. "Hey! You know you could've just asked to go in front of me!"

She realised that the taller girl probably couldn't hear a thing she was saying because of the earphones, so she stomped into the line behind her. Normally, she'd just leave it alone, since she didn't mind having to wait a bit longer, but no-one messed with Abigail Lowe's candy and got away with it!

It was with that thought that she angrily jumped up, trying to reach the taller girl's headphones and making noises of effort each time she went into the air. It took her about four tries before she realised she was better off just pulling the cable. She did, which made her feel a little better even if it was exceptionally petty. She pointed accusingly up at the other girl.

"Do you have any idea what you just did? Those were important to me, you know! Really really important! What if I starve to death now, huh?" she yelled. This would probably work better if she was more intimidating than an angry Magikarp. She shook her head. "You're lucky I'm forgiving you, you know! But I'm gonna help you to be all nice and stuff." she reached into her pocket, pulling out a chocolate bar and pushing it at the girl's face.

"So since I've forgiven you, we're gonna be the best of friends from now on, you got that! I'll even let you keep that space in line if you want!" she said. Of course, there was also the fact that there was no physical way that she would be able to push the other girl out of the spot, but whatever. Abigail smiled innocently and cheerfully, with apparently zero awareness that she'd done anything to annoy or upset the other girl at all.

~Lynn Haywood~

Lynn hadn't heard or saw the other girl trying to get her attention, she was too busy trying to reign in her impatience. That, and the music blasting in her headphones pretty much drowned out all the other idle conversation of everyone else in line. She didn't care at all about what they were talking about. She only cared about the line finally goddamn moving so she could get her mitts on a pokemon. She admittedly didn't know all that much about pokemon, since she sort of...either slept through most classes regarding them or just downright skipped them. But she was sure she'd be fine. She was Lynn Haywood, after all. She was confident in her abilities.

The feeling of her headphones being tugged on and the sound of music going silent in her ears pulled her out of her thoughts and back to the other people in line.

"Do you have any idea what you just did?" The voice behind her made it obvious who the culprit was. She didn't know the voice, but well, it didn't matter. No one touched her headphones. Let alone just pull them off of her when she was listening to something. Honestly, she was a little pissed.

Some little fucker was about to get kneecapped.

"Those were important to me, you know! Really really important! What if I starve to death now, huh?"

Lynn turned around slowly as the girl continued to talk, one of her hands balling into a fist. The perpetrator of the crime, and soon to be kneecapped victim? The same braids she had almost run into. She was upset she had got the spot in front of her while she was being slow, at least it sounded like it. Well, tough toenails, twinkle toes. The amount of fucks she gave was a whopping zero. She honestly would very much like to knock this girls teeth out, and would have too if she suddenly hadn't found a chocolate bar shoved in her face.

"You're lucky I'm forgiving you, you know! But I'm gonna help you to be all nice and stuff. So since I've forgiven you, we're gonna be the best of friends from now on, you got that! I'll even let you keep that space in line if you want!"

...wat.

It took the older girl a few seconds to process what the hyperactive seeming girl had said. When she finally did, Lynn replied with a loud laugh. Whether amusement, or mocking was difficult to tell. It might have been a bit of both. The laughing continued for a few moments before Lynn finally calmed down enough to talk properly. She brushed the chocolate bar aside, taking no interest in the candy.

"Okay, braids." Lynn said as her laughter died down, a condescending smirk plastered on her face as she looked down at the other girl. "The only reason I haven't knocked your teeth out yet, is because you made me laugh." She replied, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a lighter and a carton of cigarettes. She pulled one out of the carton, and lit it, before placing the carton back in her jacket pocket along with the lighter in the other.

"So you might wanna, back off before I forget just how nice and forgiving I am." Lynn placed a hand on her hip, holding the freshly lit cigarette in the other as she spoke, blowing some smoke towards the other girl. "So shut your goddamn mouth, and get lost."

With that, she turned back around as the cigarette had its intended calming effect, and brought her headphones back around her ears. Maybe she had been a bit harsh, but eh...she couldn't really say she cared. She just wanted this goddamn line to hurry up and move, and it was rather obvious if her tapping foot was anything to go by.

Tesh Yama

Redorchard

Thunk!

The top of Tesh's head collided with his overhead shelf as he pushed himself closer to his bed frame. A collection of inert pokeballs and miniature pokemon knickknacks rolled and tumbled onto his lap from above. "Uncle Fredrick!" He shouted, too drowsy to stop a couple of pokeballs from rolling off his bed and onto the ground. The sound of plastic striking hardwood echoed in tandem with his uncle's footsteps scrabbling up to the second floor.

"Darnit, I'm sorry kiddo! It's already past 9!" Fredrick's elderly wheezing met Tesh long before his old uncle was peering at him from the bottom of his bedroom's banister. Tesh looked at his uncle's practically reflective forehead and snapped back into motion. I'm late!

Like a raging Rhyhorn desperate to escape a rock slide, Tesh barreled down the stairs with his waist-bound pouch in tow, packed with a potion, and 500 pokedollars as per his grandfather's generosity. I'd give yeh more, kiddo, but my medicine.. Tesh shook the idea that he was under-supplied, shooting his uncle a look of confidence before crashing out of the front door. I'm sure you would, gramps. I'm sure you would.

The pathways were mostly free of children playing this morning. What luck! Tesh thought, not slowing his pace in the least. No traffic was good... Right? Wrong. It didn't take him long to get to Professor Ficus' lab, but what awaited him was nothing short of a disaster. That line-up was huge. He knew that every kid in town with a passion for pokemon would be here, but this? This was insane! If only he'd arrived an hour earlier like he'd planned... Bah, it was too late to waste time on regret. His uncle had a hard night, working his way through coughing fits as his favorite show, safari showdown, was canceled. Poor old guy. He'd show him a new form of excitement though! When his uncle next saw him, Tesh would be the Huji pokemon Champion.

As he approached the end of the line, Tesh slowed his pace to a crawl, and stopped hard behind a tiny girl, who'd been facing a girl with headphones standing just in front of her. He hadn't heard any of what the two were talking about, nor did he care. Tesh was too preoccupied with the idea that his lungs might explode if he didn't catch his breath. He tried to compose himself, breathing deeply and latching onto his waist. Not too late, thank heavens.

Redorchard

The hustle of the crowd was slow, to say the least. Eons dragged by as your foot tapped, your fingers twiddled, and perhaps the occasional word flew by in odd conversation. Late arrivals marched in behind you, more and more people kept stacking like a horizontal tower. There weren't nearly this many kids and young adults around Redorchard, they must've been coming from all around Huji to begin their Pokémon adventure. You wondered how many trainers came, how many had went, how many would fail, and how many would succeed. Which of them were you?

The oceanic mass of people around you was more than you were used to, unless you had grown up in an urban environment. Every child's voice and every person's laugh all combined into a sound that really didn't make any sense to you. It was like a foreign language made up of words you knew. People of all races, color, ages, and background had gathered for the annual Pokémon training debut. They slowly dredged on near the back of the line, but became fidgety once they rounded the corner. When the line moved forward one space, most of the trainers would come running out, Poké Ball held to the trees surrounding Redorchard and screaming about becoming the Pokémon master. One roused trainer came screaming out of the lab with his Pidgey raised into the air. The pidgey's expression was less than amused. He clearly didn't enjoy being Simba. You noted most of the crowd was much younger than you. They had bagged sandwiches popping out of the zippers of their neon backpacks. Plastic bottles and thermos' lined the side pockets, covered in stickers. Many were already reading handwritten notes from their parents, who were likely two blocks down. They grow up so fast!

You reached the corner. Wait, had you fallen unconscious? This line was actually moving at a visible rate? You were past the large, rotund child now. He sat behind the white picket fence surrounding the laboratory. The sun caused his circular frames to have a white glare to them. He wrote furiously in a purple notebook, what it was you didn't know. Why was he here again? Your distracted thoughts kept you occupied until the glass, sliding doors were before you. They opened. A short, scrawny fellow with unkempt brown hair and spiral glasses stood in the doorway. His pronounced cheeks rose as his face scrunched. The research assistant's finger danced, waving erratically as he counted the line as if it were a complex math problem.

"Ummmm, eugh.... hmmm.."

His throat and nose seemed clogged at the same time with his guttural, distorted voice. The pauses he took were monumental in proportion, and likely the source for all of the hold-up you endured.

"Let's, uh... see here..."

How could he breathe?

"UMMMMMM..."

...

"Oh yes! You three! Come in come in eughguhguhuh!"

He laughed through the thick coating of mucus surely resting in his throat. He fanned the clipboard at each of you, before wagging his finger in the air and waving his hips. The scrawny scientist almost did a dance back into the lab. But it was more like the jig of a baby Girafarig. Each of you followed him into a building that seemed smaller on the inside than it was on the outside. Massive, peculiar machines sat on the moss green tile floor. Dots of all colors cooed and shone as the technology vibrated. You swore some of them might explode at any moment. Files, records, discarded Poké Balls and prototype Pokédex plastered the tops of tables on the outer edge of the room. Crammed into the space between all of this were scientists in white lab coats. They scurried to and fro about the place, not so much as a single wave. Their heads were low and eyes focused on clipboards with paper. Busy day, busy day, busy day.

Except for this guy.

"Yeaugh, huhuh, sorry about the-wait! Th-th-th terminals will get ya' yourrrrr Pokémon! Um, uh, hmm..."

A trainer bumped into his shoulder, and the man nearly leapt across the room with a yelp. He landed and brushed off his white coat, plagued with coffee stains. He turned to where the trainer had come from.

"Oh yeah! Hyuh, they're over there!" He pointed to the corner of the room, where at least ten terminals lined the wall. One was in use.

"MILES. MILES FOR THE FIFTIETH TIME, SPEED IT UP!" A disembodied voice said.

Miles left the three of you with a wavering cry, scattering away with his hands waving to and fro above him. As you walked away, you heard the familiar voice of Miles struggling to count once again.

"MILES. IT'S SIX. LET SIX OF THEM IN."

A man of dark skin and buzzed hair smiled after his shouting match across the room. He waved to you, revealing the top row of his shining white teeth. "If you need any help operating the terminals, I'm right here. Professor Ficus is out right now, but I'm her main assistant researcher! Name's Bruce." The man said. His voice was calmer now, not containing the boiling rage of animosity. "If you ever have questions on your journey, I'm a ring away. My work number's built into each Pokédex." He imitated a phone with a closed fist and two fingers on each side being next to his face.

You stepped forward.

SUZUKI YASHA

Dewmeadow
Current Team: --
Inventory: Potion (1), Pokedollars (500)

Perhaps it was due to his life of farming out in the sticks of Johto, but Yasha was what some would call an early bird though that term was an understatement. He was the living embodiment of a morning person; he always had a constant flow of pure energy running through his veins as if he was a vigoroth. Even if he was lifting pounds and pounds of hay or even wrestling with the tauros back home, he was never tired. Today was no exception. As soon as his eyes opened he sat straight up in the hammock he had hung up the night before. Yes, he hung a hammock up outside the night he arrived in Dewmeadow Town. The strong oak trees were very useful for the vagabond. "Ain't this a beautiful day!" He exclaimed as he hopped out of his hammock, plopping his feet against the wet grassy ground.

Yasha rummaged through his sack and pulled out a piece of beef jerky, perfectly salted and soft enough so that he wouldn't wear his jaw bones down to dust, courtesy to the monks back home. As he ate his meager breakfast, Yasha did wonder how the monks were doing back home in Johto. He missed them: him missed the monks, the farm, the cattle, the village folk. All of it. But he wouldn't let his spirits be rained down! This was his journey to see what his birth land was like, a spiritual journey! The monks had spent much of the temple's funds in order to send him to the Huji region. He couldn't fail them now!

With his spirit rekindled, Yasha made his way through the town as fast as his legs would carry him, right after he packed up of course. The townsfolk that were up were most likely puzzled with just who this young boy running through the town was. They've never seen someone like him around their town. While running around he did ask directions to the professor's lab, but many refused to talk to him. They seemed to be paranoid about strangers though he wasn't exactly sure why.

Soon enough he was able to find the lab, along with two others that had arrived there only moments before him though he wasn't thinking much of them. His attention was completely focused on the marvel that was the lab. All his life he had lived in a village that, while not that behind the times in terms of technology, could be hardly called modern. This was the first time he had never seen a building that looked so futuristic for lack of a better word. It was intimidating.

His focus on the building was torn away when the two others, a boy and a girl, were suddenly very interested about him, especially the girl who seemed to be rather forward. Yasha stared at her for a second, and boy, his chest could hardly contain his pounding heart. This girl was pretty, really pretty. Yikes, he could get lost staring in here eyes! He was only lucky to have the boy reach out for handshake and introduced himself in such a shy manner. "Aw shucks Rowan, ya don't need to be so shy! The name is Suzuki Yasha, just call me Yasha!" He spoke with a heavy southern accent that was filled with cheer.

The boy turned to look back at Mara with a bright grin. "I'm from Johto! What's ya name?"

Mara continued staring at the stranger as he shook Rowan’s hand, and for a moment, she felt slightly offended. How come Rowan got the attention of the stranger? It was hardly like he spent every waking moment thinking about any place other than Dewmeadow! She frowned a bit, sliding into an unusually bitter mood. It was just typical for starry eyed Rowan to…

Wait….

He’s from Johto?

Mara’s eyes widened and her jealously towards Rowan vanished instantly. The stranger—no, Yasha, she corrected herself—came from the Johto region. Mara knew very little about geography beyond Huji, but as far as she could tell, Johto had to be somewhere exotic. Perhaps, it was a place overrun by pirates, and this Yasha had gone on some sort of daring adventure to defend forbidden knowledge! Quickly becoming excited, Mara did her best to maintain her usual cool composure, but it was no use. She was too distracted to even notice Yasha’s reaction to her.

”So you’re from Johto—tell us all about it, then!” Mara demanded eagerly, before attempting once more to appear cool. “That is, if you’re telling the truth…Yasha.”

She rocked on her heals slightly, waiting with trepidation. She paid no more attention to Rowan or anything around her. The professor could have arrived and announced that all of the pokemon had to be sent to Redorchard to fulfill demand and Mara wouldn’t have noticed.

”We don’t get strangers here very often…” Mara added once more, before resolving to stay quiet until the stranger had a chance to respond.

Dewmeadow

Through your conversation, you'd note the lack of people around the lab. Sure, Dewmeadow was out of the way, but was it so in the country that nobody else came around? You didn't even see the traveling merchant that was usually strolling his wagon through the field houses. People in the town still went about their days as usual, though, and seemed to be in their normal day-to-day state of mind. An elderly gray-haired woman scuttled across the plain with a smoking basket full of fresh rolls. She'd smile and play keep away from a curious Butterfree that wrinkled its nose and leaned in from time to time to take her baked goods. A burly, bronzed man swaggered towards the outskirts of the town, accompanied by a spry Growlithe. Five younger children ran in circles around a large oak tree at the highest hill in Dewmeadow, running until they could not longer stay balanced.

The research laboratory was an intriguing marvel of technology. Not quite state-of-the-art, but still a well-oiled machine nonetheless. Steam came pouring forth as rings from a steel column that rose above the roof, adjacent to the building. A radio tower made of intertwining iron rods towered above the column even. Twisted coils sprouted from the tip of the tower to give it just that tad bit of extra range, and in all directions. A black cord connected to the base of the radio tower and burrowed through the copper, sheet metal roof into... somewhere. The window frames were a yellow, studded metal and rotated, for whatever reason. They looked out onto the green pastures with two big, blue eyes. And pistons, pistons all over this moving castle of a laboratory emitted steam upon each compression. And when they rose, the pistons took in a howling breath of fresh air as if alive.

The copper-colored door creaked open. There was one eye, and one above that, and another still. All you could see were three eyes stacked on top of each other. And then they all came tumbling down, three young kids in a pile. One of them had a wide-brim, tan hat and a butterfly net strapped to his back. Another wore a white and blue uniform with thick, square glasses and a black headband to hold her hair back. The last, the top of the totem pole, wore a bright pink dress and had blonde locks down to the back of her knees. The kids laughed in unison, rolling off of each other and dampening their clothes in the recent rain on the ground. The door swung open wider. A sound barrage of metal striking itself and twisting mechanisms came forth from the doorway. Just after, a bright-eyed individual in a brown vest followed.

"Say, what are you kids laughing at?" said Professor Dogwood.

The kids only laughed harder, rolling away as a group and starting an improvised game of tag. There were two Poké Balls strapped to Dogwood's leather belt, and at least twenty pens stuffed into every pocket of his vest. The Professor bit down on a nail that he carried at the side of his mouth. His speech was a bit muffled because of it. His neck took a wide angle to survey the area, even leaning out the door to check around the corners of the building. Sighing, he momentarily let his neck hang. The golden bifocals that crowned his head slid down upon the bridge of his nose. His shoulders rose and you could hear the faintest chuckle before he inhaled deeply. Bringing his eyes to you, the Professor's gaze pierced your own. A wave of his hand beckoned you inside the lab.

"Come on in, the terminal's up and running."

Dogwood led you through the labyrinth that was his laboratory. Piping jutted through the middle of the room, fog and steam collecting around the sauntered joints of the cuts and corners. There were points in the path where ducking between two parallel pipes was necessary to get to the next area of the lab. The pipes led to various contraptions, all foreign to you and screaming as steam emitted from their chambers. Knobs, keys, and screens riddled the surface of these metal monstrosities.

"I guess nobody from out of town wanted to come in. That's a shame. Less wait time for you, then!" Dogwood turned to all of you and gave you a thumbs up, crooked smile still containing the nail. Though, you couldn't help to notice the awkward pause of his words. "My assistant hasn't made it in today, but I can help you run the terminal. I built it myself."

More pipes, more obstacles, more noise. The place sounded like a one-man factory. Finally, squeezed into a tiny side room, a mauve-colored tarp lay disheveled next to the terminal. Dogwood wiped some dust off the side of the contraption before pulling out a mechanical keyboard from the front slot. Blue letters flew across the screen and in lines as the Professor typed. Eventually, when the screen was full of code, cogs with large circumferences began to churn. One twisted another, twisted another, twisted another, until finally the walls appeared to move around you. A sound of static blasted from the ceiling, momentarily blacking out the screen before it returned to its normal state. Pillars of steam blasted out the side of the terminal before the code cleared itself and a lone word remained on screen.

"After you," Professor Dogwood said.

Abigail Lowe

Location: Redorchard

Abigail was coughing loudly, eyes screwed up thanks to the smoke. She was very bewildered by the older girl's reaction, but didn't hold it against her. In fact, while the blue-haired girl wouldn't have known it, her actions were the very worst method to get rid of Abigail. In fact, though she was being ignored, Abigail was attempting to nod wisely. She understood what was going on. The poor girl just didn't know how to talk to people.

Fear not, strange angry blue-haired girl! I, Abigail, shall be your mentor! she decided, absentmindedly chomping on the chocolate bar she'd waved at Lynn. This is a bond that will never be broken! Speaking of things that would never end, why wasn't this line moving? Did someone die? Abigail gasped internally. She knew it was possible to starve in the line. She knew it.

Wait, hang on. People were... Moving? Walking? The line was actually going somewhere. She wasn't gonna grow old here, with only her sweets and a bunch of grumpy people for company? This called for a celebration hug. She looked at the two people in front of and behind her. Well, poor blue-hair probably wasn't used to hugs. That would have to be at least Lesson 2 in Abigails Guide to Not Being Mean to Other People and/or Making Them Drop Their Sweets. She looked at the guy that had turned up behind her. He seemed to be pretty out of breath. Maybe someone blew smoke in his face too.

This mystery kept her occupied until she reached the sliding doors of the Laboratory.

After one minute in the laboratory, she had decided that this guy was too stupid to be a professor. Even Abigail could count to six, and apparently she wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, whatever that meant. All she knew was that her parents had given her a really weird look when she'd pointed out that she lived in a house, not a shed. They sure could be dumb sometimes.

Still, the room was definitely full of life. There was so much going on, things lighting up and moving around. It was like a visual representation of Abigail's diet. She found it hard to pay attention to what the professor was saying anyway. The words weren't making sense in her brain. Still, when he pointed over at the terminals, she could at least understand that. She was practically jumping with joy as she made her way across the room. No point in trying to be cool about it, this was gonna be her first Pokémon!

When she reached the terminal, she smiled as she looked at the message on the screen, then accepted. She was absorbed by the animations on the screen for a moment, forgetting the real reason that she'd been excited. Once she did though, she realised that the screen was displaying her information.

She scowled at it for a second when she noticed the height. She wasn't that small! Okay, she wasn't that that small. Grumpily, she changed the height to be 5 feet exactly. Not four. Five. She was not less than five feet tall, and she was certainly not in denial about anything.

Once that annoying stuff was done, though, it was finally the good part. Abigail watched, completely absorbed, as the image of the pokeball was built up on the screen. For a brief, brief second, she wasn't even thinking about food. Then she was wondering if they could make a pokeball for sweets, and why they hadn't done it yet. Still, once the animation was done, she stared at the screen, smiling like a little - ahem- littler kid on their birthday.

She'd forgotten about nicknames! Well, Deerling had to have one, right? Oh man, there was so much pressure. She tried to think logically about it. Nicknames were supposed to be something you really cared about or remind you of happy memories, right? Something like that! She tried to think of things that made her happy, and memories, to make sure that the name was super important to her.

Anyway, long story short, that was how 'Waffles' the Deerling got his name.

Was it possible to die of impatience and boredom? She was pretty sure that was going to kill her here. The longer she waited, the more her annoyance built. The more her annoyance built, the more impatient she became. The more impatient she became, the more annoyed she became. It was a viscous, never ending cycle. If there was a word the girl could learn the meaning of, it was 'chill'. At least the more the cigarette disappeared into ashes on the ground, the better she felt.

She shoved her hands into her jacket pockets, not noticing the other guy that had got in line behind them. She wouldn't care much if she did notice. What she did notice though, was that the line was finally goddamn moving. Thank whatever forces may be. She wasn't sure she could take it if braids started chattering about something again. So she moved forward with the rest of the line, taking note of the kid scribbling furiously in the note book. Looked like a nerd just ripe for picking on. She had half a mind to do just that...

but well, she was on a mission. She was gonna get that damn pokemon.

As she approached the sliding door, she removed the cigarette from her mouth, crushing the butt of it under her boot as she walked in and was met with the most incompetent looking research assistant she had ever seen. He talked like he had some sort of speech impediment or something, and wasn't likely all there in the head either. Hell, she could probably do a better job than this bozo. Well, whatever. She'd refrain from antagonizing the people handing her a pokemon. That'd just be stupid, even for her. She wanted one after all.

...though, if all else failed, she supposed she could always take one. There had to be plenty around here that weren't in use.

Thankfully, she didn't have to deal with the annoyance for long. A man by the name of Bruce made himself known. Ficus was out, so that was probably one of the reasons for the line outside. Well, whatever. Not her problem. She stepped up to the terminal. Blah blah blah some stupid terms and conditions and blah blah legal stuff she couldn't care less about.

She pressed the accept button, and some personal information was displayed.

Her eyes narrowed at the screen, yeah yeah, at least they didn't ask for her bust size. She pressed the correct button impatiently, watched as the pokeball was constructed in real time. Okay, she had to admit. The nerds could do some pretty cool things when they weren't busy being nerds. She wondered briefly if that's all how pokeballs were made these days? She had no idea.

Well, whatever, not important.

Sneasel, huh? A nickname? Hell yeah. Of course she was gonna give Sneasel a nickname. A pokemon as cool as her new best friend should have an equally cool name. But what? Hmm...it should be something cool, but also intimidating and tough sounding. Several names ran through her head which she quickly dismissed. It needed to be something special...something emphasizing it's already large amount of coolness.

...Quill?

Yeah, that red feather on her head was absolutely awesome looking. Quill was an awesome name, so Quill she named the Sneasel.

Rowan Branchers

_____

Dewmeadow

'Ah!' A wave of relief went through Rowan as Yasha addressed him and shook his hand. He's a good guy! 'Okay, Yasha! I'm very happy to meet you! Haven't seen you before, so I assume you're new! Welcome to Dewmeadow!' The name sounded foreign, but given Yasha, that wasn't weird. With Rowan's limited contact with foreigners, he was very happy that this man gave such a nice first impression. He could be at ease with this person! … So, why does he prefer to be called his last name? Eh, he could ask that later, if he remembered. Now he was talking to Mara again, and...

'Huh?' She, um, didn't answer his question. She didn't tell him her name. Did she not want him to know? The reason why was beyond Rowan, so he simply chose to look slightly puzzled, looking from Mara to Yasha as they held their exchange. She asked questions, but had totally ignored his question. That felt odd. Oh, well. Still, yeah, they were going to become Pokémon trainers together and now they were becoming friends! This was an awesome day! Rowan allowed himself to grin happily.

'Hey, Yasha, Mara?' Rowan spoke out happily, AFTER Yasha had reacted to Mara's questions. 'What kind of Pokémon are you hoping to-'

'-The professor's coming!'
He interrupted himself and jumped on the spot as the door opened, Dogwood coming out telling off some laughing kids. Rowan was all wide-eyed and ready, his fists clenched together in front of his chest and eagerness in his expression.

Tesh Yama

Redorchard

Sure enough, once Tesh stopped to catch his breath, the line started moving. The unusually large gathering starting pouring into the building near the line's head, one after another, like clockwork. It seemed the line was moving up three people at a time. Only three? Tesh scoffed after the second shift in position, impatiently eyeing the kids ahead of him. The taller girl stood out a little more than most. She looked to be around his age, a little older than most of the others in front of them. The tiny one however...

Tesh's head twitched backwards when she glanced back at him. What? He thought, huffing one last time. She seemed awfully fidgety, but far from unsociable. Then again, Tesh wasn't very interested in making conversation with any of these amateurish daydreamers. They probably didn't even know what a sub-punch strategy was. He glared at the small girl irritably, but said nothing. The line started moving again, Tesh following closely behind the minuscule girl in front of him.

"Oh yes! You three! Come in come in eughguhguhuh!"

Tesh cringed and shielded his mouth from the disgusting little man's spew. Whatever. It wasn't going to discourage him from walking forward with a confident grin. He kept his distance from the allergy inclined little gremlin and made his way towards one of the terminals, Ignoring Bruce's offers to help. He didn't need it. These terminals were fairly self-operating, for the most part. It was a shame that professor Ficus was out, though. Tesh was looking forward to seeing her. Oh well.

YOUR POKÉMON IS... MEOWTH

Tesh smiled a little too widely, quickly concealing his joy. A meowth was the perfect pokemon for him. A misunderstood little rascal with the potential to ebb class and refinement. In battle, there were few equals to its mischievous nature and unpredictable, yet perfectly coordinated style of attack. They made good companions outside of battle too, but most Meowth were simply made for confrontation. He awaited eagerly for the machine's next question...

[WILL YOU GIVE MEOWTH A NAME?]

"Kaz," Tesh muttered to himself, typing the name in promptly. Kaz, named for his uncle's Purloin, a fierce pokemon that only faltered against the elite four themselves. It was the perfect name. "K-A-Z.." And it was done. Tesh awaited his pokeball with a passion growing near the pit of his stomach. Truth be told though, that was just hunger.

He'd skipped breakfast for this.

The computer said.

~You caught Kaz, the Meowth!~

--
“Congratulations!” Bruce said, a motivated but exhausted smile directed towards you. He reached into a black satchel hanging from his shoulder and took out 3 Pokédex, one for each of you.

“Point this at any Pokémon, and its information will be downloaded to the database. You can also use it to call anyone you link your Pokédex with. They’ve all been linked to mine, so feel free to call at any time!”

[Acquire: Ficus Pokédex]

Bruce caught his breath, placing a hand on his chest and turning his head to meet new arrivals with a bright smile. He motioned them over towards the terminals. His face returned to you.

“Now, I’m sure all of you are aware of the conditions: catalogue as many Pokémon as possible for Ficus Technologies. You’ll receive a modest sum for each wild species recorded. If you manage to record any wild rare species or anomalies, we’ll send additional money.”

Bruce tapped his chin, looking to the ceiling and muttering to himself. He opened his mouth once again with an extended finger to the sky.

“Oh! And under the terms and conditions, you can’t use technology licensed by other companies. We’ll have to suspend your contract in that case, uh, sorry.” Bruce paused, squinting his eyes and rubbing the back of his head. “Eh-Especially The Dogwood Company! Ficus might kill you if she found that out!” Bruce laughed nervously.

“We’ll send you more technology based on your success down the road, but here’s a Ficus Ball for now."

Bruce handed each of you a normal Poké Ball, with a green F etched into the top portion. “New polyfiber coating! It uh… makes catches a bit easier.” Bruce paused, tapping his fingers together.

[Acquire: Ficus Ball x1]

“Do you have any additional questions?” He said.

~After you ask any and all questions (Feel free to ignore this part until then)~

“G-G-G-G-Goodbye! Good luck! EUGHCAOO”

The doors slid open, and the sun was still warm upon your face. High in the sky, it towered over the lime green leaves surrounding the village. You were on your way! And just in that instance, when you lifted your foot to start heading towards the route…

“Hey!”

A squeaky voice called to you from the left, where the lines weren’t amassing and mucus didn’t fly about the place. You noticed a trio of young trainers in formation. One in the front had shorts (they were comfortable and easy to wear), and a red cap too large for his brow tucked backwards. The two in the back appeared to be campers. They looked very much alike, save for them being a boy and a girl. They had teal outfits and orange scarves that matched, it was kind of cute in a way.

“We want to battle!” the Youngster said.

“Yeah/Yeah!” The two in the back added at identical times.

The Youngster smirked. “That is, if you think you can beat my Rattata.” The Poké Ball in his hands enlarged, and it too had a green F inscribed to it. The Youngster revealed his wolfish smile, and his eyebrows rose simultaneously. “My Rattata is in the top percentage of Rattata,” he said. The Youngster took his thumb and swiped it against the tip of his nose. “Heh, so what do you say? How about a team battle, us three vs. you three?”

Inventory: Potion (1), Pokedollars (500)

After Yasha’s explanation, Mara’s attention was grabbed by the professor. She hadn’t even noticed that she forgot to introduce herself—luckily, Rowan managed to do that for her. She couldn’t help but grin with excitement as the door swung open and a pile of kids fell out.

These kids aren’t the professor…. right? She pondered. She couldn’t recall ever meeting the professor before. For all she knew, the squealing heap could indeed be the esteemed Professor Dogwood. Perplexed, she peered towards the door, only to jump back when a man with violet hair appeared, weighed down almost by pens, poke balls, and nails.

"Come on in, the terminal's up and running.”

Mara looked around with wonder and amazement at the factory like lab. She couldn’t help but run her hands over the pipes, imagining what each and every one of them did. Almost dizzy with fascination, she didn’t notice as Professor Dogwood led the others further into the lab.

Transfixed by a pipe structure, Mara was incredibly tempted to fiddle with the various levels and switches.

”Professor! What does this do, exactly….? Professor?”

Embarrassment filled her face as she realized that everyone had gone on without her. Sending another curious gaze towards the contraptions, she ran after the others, and managed to catch up just in time. The mauve room was filled with some sort of marvelous machine, and instantly, Mara wanted to analyze it and understand exactly how it worked.

Somehow, she knew, it would produce a pokemon…. A childish thought crossed her mind that perhaps it created the pokemon, rather than simply placing it inside of a poke ball. The professor motioned towards Mara, indicating the contraption as he hoisted up a mechanical keyboard.

It was time…. finally….

Mara looked at the screen carefully, wondering for a moment what exactly she was accepting. It didn’t matter though — no one ever bothered with the terms and conditions. Mara eagerly pressed her thumb onto the screen, watching as the lasers struggled to form words on the screen.

Once again, Mara resisted the urge to pester the professor with how exactly the lasers worked. Biting her lip, she rolled her eyes a bit at the height, before adjusting it to the former number.

Honestly, not every girl is freakishly short…

She then nodded at the weight, as it appeared to read 145 pounds. She figured the estimation to be correct, and once again, she didn’t think it would matter if it was too wrong. It’s not like they’ll arrest me for lying about my weight… They’d have to arrest half of the female trainers out there!

Pressing the button to confirm her choices, Mara watched with trepidation as a poke ball began to form almost beneath the screen.
”How do pokemon even fit inside a poke ball?” Mara wondered around. ”Is it like… quantum things or something?”

The poke ball became more and more concrete, and in seconds, the standard poke ball sat where nothing had previously existed. Mara looked on with awe as the white button pulsed a dark pink, and on the screen, the identity of the pokemon within it was revealed.

YOUR POKÉMON IS... ESPURR

[WILL YOU GIVE ESPURR A NAME?]

Mara paused. She’d never considered the possibility of giving her pokemon a name. All of the trainers she had ever met had simply called their pokemon by its designated name… But that’s no different than someone calling me human… Mara hesitated, before recalling a name she’d seen once in a book.

Kira. She hadn’t the faintest idea what it meant, but it sounded cool enough. Nearly as cool as the eyes of an espurr.

Gleampier

Ah, the beautiful town of Gleampier. Scientists have studied the anomaly that the Port was, having never had a cold winter in its existence. The temperature is always the same as a fair summer heat, but that was nothing a local couldn’t handle. With extended stay, one’s skin was bronzed and their hair had become blonde since childhood. The all too familiar swirling breeze came in with the rising tide, unfurling the locks on your head. Wingull cooed from high on and soared through the lone clouds that managed to survive in the sky during this perfect day.

Even the water was warm, being fed by thermal vents that existed just off shore at the bed of the cove. Geologists, Ecologists, and Meteorologists were rummaging about the town 24/7 scribbling on their documents and swearing the forsaken town for not having any sort of wifi or connection. If it did, research could be conducted at a rate four times faster than it currently could! At the moment, though, scientists had to hike up the jagged cliffs bordering the town’s western side and reach a recently constructed research station. Elevation appeared to improve connection. That wasn’t where you were going, though. Your shoes slammed against cobblestone pavement. Sand whisked against your face and forced itself into the soles of your shoes. If salt in your shoes made you jump higher, sand made you run faster. The breeze only became more relaxing as it surrounded your face. You closed your eyes for a moment. The furious wind, mixed with the ever-present sun, was an earthen nirvana. And nobody could take that from you. You thought it unwise to run for too long with your eyes closed, and your eyelids shot open to continue your guided journey.

There was never much to do inside, as technology wasn’t the most recent innovation in the port. Most efforts went towards building oceanic rigs, fishing equipment, and building residency for the high-population town. The perfect weather attracted quite a crowd, and expansion efforts had to be made constantly. It wasn’t a city quite yet, but within ten years it likely could be. Your path took you in alleyways, around store corners, between crowds of people and even over hedges and bushes. You took the straightest path possible to the port itself, where a distinct vessel rocked on the waters.

S.S. EXPEDITION

In bold, bright blue letters right on the side of the ship’s shining white hull. A massive construction of tangled wires topped the ship, buzzing with electricity. It was the distinct vessel of none other than Professor Palm, who came into port on this specific day every year. Young trainers from all around would gather for their first Pokémon, and the attendance showed. A long, winding line had already accumulated to await passage onto the ship. A wooden, barred plank separated the dock from the ship’s hull. It seemed that two children were allowed to be on the gangplank at once: one exiting the ship, and another boarding. You took your place in line, just as two others approached at the same time you did.

One seemed roguish and foreign, with dark, spiked hair atop his head. His pale skin, coupled with the tattoo above his left eye, were certainly oddities in Gleampier. The second of you had long, light red strands of hair tied into a flourishing ponytail that ran down just below her shoulders. She wore a dark dress that faded into pink the farther one was to look down her body. The last of you perhaps fit in the best with the environment, but not by far. He had long strands of black hair and golden, slim eyes. A light blue scarf waved with the oceanic breeze, coming forth from underneath a black overcoat. The three of you certainly drew minor attention from the blonde, bronzed locals. How did you decide who would join in line first?

~Havoc Matsuda~

Havoc was tense. There was no way around. Not now. He had been on the road travelling by foot since early three mornings ago when he left his family home to pursue his life dream. He had anxiety about not knowing where when and if his parents started looking for him. Each step he took, each break pause or rest he made could be his last with his parents or anyone that might be helping them being just round the corner to drag him home - or to juvie. Havoc was sitting in a tree with his back against the bark dangling his legs with side of his chosen branch. Unable to sleep, unable to think, unable to relax in any meaningful way, his left had twiddle the pokédollars he scraped together to make his delinquent trip wondering, hoping that he had enough to cover his ticket away from the port city. The other hand rested neatly atop his knee but twitched without cease, as did his eyebrow furrow and quiver incessantly. Havoc locked on to each sound as they hit his ears. The lapping of the waves, the squawks of the wingulls coming in land for the day. Even as the cruise ship docked, Havoc didn't move a muscle until the foreman call for the passengers to depart. Havoc opened his eyes, exhaling deeply.

Finally, the call was made for boarding. Those on the boardwalk and on the shore began to part from their families lining up to dock and leave. Havoc slowly put his right hand clasped on his right knee and lifted himself to his feet. He was currently dressed in three-quarter shorts, a t-shirt and a cloak with his single-sling backpack hung diagonally over his left shoulder. Inside lay his alter-ego - at least the costume thereof. He took a step forward, off the branch and down towards the grounds below, ending in a roll to take away some of the momentum.

As Havoc found his place in line he leaned out one last time, looking over his shoulder and the mainland he was leaving behind and the path he had hitchhiked to get right here. THis would be the last time he would be able to look over his shoulder and still make out familiar landmark. After this, all he'd be able to see was the blue of the ocean.

Abigail grabbed the Pokeball that contained Waffles with a huge smile on her face. For a moment, she just held it in her hands, staring at it before she started twirling around the room in joy. "Yeah! I got a Pokémon!" and other similar things were yelled out. She appeared to be trying to make a song, but it wasn't exactly a number one hit to put it lightly.

It took her a while to notice that the nice man was giving her something, but once she did she clipped the Pokeball to her bag and ran over to him, grabbing her Pokedex. She switched it on, and saw that the list of Pokémon was empty. Awww. She'd wanted to know about all of them, too! How else was she supposed to decide what ones to take to the Pokémon league? This guy was a meanie.

Abigail brightened up again when she was handed the Pokeball. He told them something about it, but she didn't really understand what that meant. Polyfiber? Was that like a breakfast cereal or something? It sounded like one of those weird plain ones that Mom ate all the time. Ew.

“Do you have any additional questions?”

Abigail raised her hand like a kid in class, except with a lot more enthusiasm. "Ooh, me! Pick me, pick me!" she yelled out. Without waiting to see if he actually picked her, she asked her question. "Um, where do you think we should go? Like, when we leave here?"

While she was waiting for the answer, she looked at the Ficus Ball. Without warning, she tossed it off of the head of the blue-haired girl. She'd thought about aiming for the guy with the bangs, but she figured that he would mind it more since they didn't know each other, while the taller girl and Abigail were like, buddies now. When the ball just bounced off, straight into her hands, she looked back at Bruce.

"Aww, boring. I was hoping it'd do something cool." she said, with a smile that was completely innocent as though she wasn't even aware that she'd done anything wrong. "I guess it didn't really work!"

Abigail's mind was on more important things, though. She wondered if there would be candy on their journey. What if there wasn't? No. That just wasn't a possibility. Waffles would help her find some. Pokémon were supposed to help their trainers out, right? She could tell without even sending him out, that she and Waffles were gonna be the best of friends!
