@Remipa Awesome@The Grey DustMithias met Kathryn's determined gaze. He placed a hand on her shoulder and nodded at her understandingly. How different her turning had been, he mused in that brief moment. So tragic, compared to his. Yet he knew what it was to have family threatened, to lose loved ones to the corrupt and powerful. Like her, he too had been moved by hate and pain and had used what he had been given for his own agenda, for revenge. Yet afterward, he found that there was something more, something that had made vengeance dwindle in comparison to its importance. Almost innately after his rebirth, Mithias had realized that his vampiric gifts could be used to protect. He wondered if Kathryn would be able to find such purpose. Vengeance and anger drove her now, but would Kathryn have anything else to live for when was over?
Neither of them looked back down at Hank's body. "I hope to give you that chance, my friend, and I hope that when it is over, you will find others to fight for as well. Now come. Let the dead bury the dead. We have precious hours before dawn. Lucan!" Mithias looked around for his fastly-becoming-useful thrall.
Mithias looked at the poor, sleep-deprived boy who came to his call and decided he would do the driving himself tonight. "Lucan, find us a car. Did Soldier train you how to jack a..." The vampire raised an eyebrow as Lucan took off before he could finish his sentence. Apparently, he already had a car.
The driver's side window was smashed in, but it ran well, had some gas, and looked bland enough to blend in. It also coincidentally had cup holders. Mithias shrugged. "Very well." They got in, and Mithias got on a highway and killed the lights. 4am was pretty empty on rt 17 going north, and the tank was getting low. This far north hadn't been affected by the zombie plague, yet, so late night/early-AM stations were open with minimal staff. Kathryn was in the passenger seat and Lucan lay across the back. Mithias flipped the lights on a short distance away so as not to look suspicious and pulled into a lone station off an exit ramp in the sticks. Stark white electric light blared down from under the roof over the pumps.
Mithias glared intently through the windshield. One guy... two guys, one of them much younger, Indian heritage. Mithias asked, and Lucan didn't have much cash. One cheap camera above the window on the outside of the place...
"Stand by the pump and get ready to fill her up. I'll get the pump activated." Mithias gave no orders to Kathryn as he stepped out of the car and walked to the associated quickmart. The attendant on duty was visible through a pane of glass between a Newport poster and a stack of NY Lotto game cards. He seemed to be standing at the counter, talking with the man in the white suit jacket, and then his entire body vanished over the counter.
The noise was brief, but no screams were heard, and nobody came running out of the building. Lucan stood by the open fuel intake as directed for at least a full minute before he saw the words, "Begin fueling," flash on the screen. The building was silent, with no motion inside, as the fuel loudly coursed through the hose. Lords knows what might have been going through Kathryn's mind in that moment. Mithias came walking out with a paper bag under his arm.
The door shut beside the dark haired vampire and Lucan scrambled to screw the fuel cap on and dive into the back seat again. Mithias glanced at Kathryn with a curious expression as he shifted in reverse, looking much better off than he was 5 minutes ago. "Hm? Of course I left them alive, Kathryn." He reassured her. "I can't very well walk into a blood bank or a sanctuary and not blow our cover. Besides, they practically brand a barcode onto every vampire that passes through nowadays. And speaking of which, Lucan... Take this." It was a bag of cash, just a few hundred dollars. "We need to get you something to eat, and I can't have you identifying yourself with a credit card. We'll make another stop in the next hour."
Day was breaking, and there was still several hours drive into the northern mountains of NY.
