Race: Human
Appearance:
A fan of classy clothes, Jack always look the part of the old school gangster by favoring old-style suits with a real clockwork fob watch.
Personality:
Coming from a long line of thieves, con-men and smooth criminals, Jack Thegn is the embodiment of Babylon's successful underbelly. He oozes charisma, the kind of aura that lights up the room and turns heads. He has friends in high places and will often be found discussing things with the most powerful man or woman in the room, only to stop and immediately change the subject as you approach. His accent is well-to-do and he preaches impeccable manner, but he has a shark-like nature which makes the polished demeanor seem like a private joke which nobody is allowed to make fun of except him. His face often features a wide, cheeky grin and his eyes glint with a devious intent. Selfish to a degree, he makes sure people who help his cause for personal wealth get richly rewarded.
History:
Thegn's history doesn't start when he himself was born, but rather when his grandfather, Jack Godwin Thegn the First was born. Godwin was from a dirt poor family who lived on the planet Beta Theta Gamma IV, a barren rock on the Frontier of Humanity's jurisdiction. When Jack was sixteen, a parasite began spreading like wildfire across the planet. Carried by humans who would become irrational and rabid, biting and mutilating anyone in sight, the corporations who ran the company organized an 'evacuation' which would only accommodate anyone willing to pay the exorbitant 'donation'. They put it down to lack of available resources, but many of the automated transports left the planet half full. Jack's family, fearing the ancient family name would die out with this plague, put all of their money together and got a ticket for Young Jack; resting the responsibility of a carrying on a dynasty on his head. He left, with only a meager supply of currency and a gritty determination to win providing the framework of everything that follows.
He gained control of the vessel by winning the hearts of the passengers; telling them that the only reason they were going to a much further colony instead of Outremer was because Babylon didn't want more refugees. Stirring up their emotions, he gained their support and quietly eliminated any opposition before taking the guards captive. Changing course, they broke from formation and headed to Outremer. The motley crew of refugees landed in the desert, some left but most chose to follow Jack Thegn. They couldn't officially work in Babylon so instead they unofficially formed Thegn Desert Salvaging Co, each with an equal share. They bought a Sandship, the Hercules, and worked their way up the ladder, bankrupting or killing off the competition till they had a sizable empire. That's when Jack purged the other refugees, taking their share so he was the sole owner.
Seventy years have past since then, all three Jacks work actively to increase the family's fortunes and to make a name for themselves in the savage world of Outremer. Since they were born on the planet, Jack Thegn III and his father are full citizens and are able to work in the city. This is where you will commonly find them, whereas grandpa Jack works exclusively out in the desert, dodging from one Tower Town to the next.
