@HankI considered doing the Space Sharks, but I had a hard time justifying one joining the Deathwatch, what with them spending all their time out in deep space. Needless to say I'm very interested in what you come up with.

@Hank@DepressedSoviet Tis indeed a conundrum, but almost every Chapter has/has had someone in the DW at one time or another, what with most of them being bound by oath to provide in times of desperate need. I'd say that this was a time of such need.

Also very interested to see what our resident mod comes up with, as well as everyone else.

I actually wasn't going to mention Ward, because I acknowledge the chapter has it's strengths regardless of Wardian bullshit. I'm not saying they suck or anything, they're incredibly effective, they look cool, and if I had to live on an Imperial planet I'd definitely pick one of the many under their protection. That said, they just aren't as fun for me as many of the other chapters. They, for me, are boring in comparison to their brothers.

But your original statement is faulty though, especially saying that they are one of the least developed. If that were true they would not get both a vidya and a movie.

I'm not insulting Rowboat Girlieman or his sons, relax. Just saying, they're not for me.

I was never excited :c

@Jbcool
I won't disagree that he's a poor writer especially in comparison to the better ones GW has written but recently all the Ultramarine fluff has been relatively good, and even then the old stuff has been repurposed to not only more or less make sense but to actually be interesting i.e. Orar's Sepulchre.

They get a movie etc because they were/are the poster-boys of 40k, which is exactly the reason why Ward went mental and made them into OP Marines in the first place. I've no real problem with the Ultras as a faction within 40k, and must say that the books by McNeil are excellent, but Ward is inexcusable.

Here's hoping that they can retcon and fix the damage he has done, I like Greco-Roman Astartes. :)

@AndreyichI, for one, would be really excited to see someone do an Ultramarine. Ever since the schism in the fanbase over Ward's writing, hardly any fans have wanted to write anything serious involving them for fear of backlash, and as a general 40k fan this has made me sad, because there's a lot of things that can be done with them. So in my opinion, it'd be nice to see the Ultramarines used again.

@DepressedSoviet @Jbcool

"Though it has happened only rarely, lone Space Marines in dark grey livery and speaking ancient variants of High Gothic have, on occasions, arrived at the fortresses of the Deathwatch in the Jericho Reach (and perhaps elsewhere) in order to "fulfil the obligations of their sworn oath." When pressed, some of these Space Marines have said they hailed from a Chapter known as the Carcharodons. However, beyond these rare encounters recorded in the dusty data-vaults of Watch Fortress Erioch, the only information forthcoming on the Carcharodons are the stories of their fell deeds throughout the Imperium."

From this page: warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Carcharodons

Good enough for an RP, I reckon.

@Hank Probably from the Honor the Chapter splatbook from the FFG Deathwatch RPG. That said, that's a good enough source for me.

@DracoLunaris Sons of Medusa is fine, as is a Sergeant - Chapter rank counting for little in the DW itself - so if you're up for it, feel free to fill out the character sheet and send it to me.

I never said that, re-read my post.

On the subject of Matt Ward, wasn't he responsible for the newcron lore? I think he actually did pretty well there. I love the new Necron fluff.

@SwitchHe did a decent job on the last WFB Dark Elf codex too, I thought. IIRC he mains Ultramarines, so that might explain the way he wrote them.

Our characters will not get along very well. The BT hate psykers, and I think I read somewhere that they actually have to basically take "Don't kill psykers" classes before working with other chapters lol.

@FinDragon I was planning to play a Sanguinary Priest. I can defer to something else if you're set on playing an apothecary.

@Dead Cruiser Well, you do seem to have the first claim for the role, so it's all good to me. I'll just come up with another fellow. It's gonna go past xmass though, but I doubt that we were going to start before it in the first place.

@FinDragon@Hank@DepressedSoviet@Dead Cruiser@Andreyich@MonkeyBusiness@Switch@DracoLunaris

Right, feel like I need to say a few things 'afore we get this RP on the road.

First, I'd like everyone to get their character sheets to me by the New Year AKA 1st of January - if I get them all before that, then so be it.

Second, I'd like good RPing of Astartes - not just hurr durr kill things. That IS sort of the point of Deathwatch, but interesting characterisation and interaction can also be had among decent/considerate players. I'm well aware that we are bio-engineered killing machines, but - as anyone who has ever read Dan Abnett's Brothers of the Snake can attest to - there is more to them than that...but only if players use their own imagination and initiative; I can give you the tools, as GM, but it is up to the players to use your own minds.

What would a member of a certain Chapter do in certain situations? How would he react to something? Solve a situation? Would he be fine with killing civilians etc?

Just use your heads before posting that you're stuck, and without asking me for suggestions, that's all I ask.

Thirdly, this is the main page for the Deathwatch: warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Deathwatch

And this is the one for Astartes: warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Space_Mari..

This may also help, especially the lower sections: 1d4chan.org/wiki/Deathwatch_(RPG)

Please read them both, I'm not asking for everyone to be experts in 40k lore, or even Marine lore, but if you know nothing about Marines and simply like them for the coolness factor (which is fine in itself) then you're going to have a hard time with this RP.

The Deathwatch are a specific group of specific marines with specific stuff to do. If you've no idea about them, then there's no point you joining.

That is my rant now over, if you've got any questions then feel free to ask.

EDIT:

Forgot to mention, 'speciality' on the Character Sheet means 'role' really I.E. Tactical Marine, Assault etc...rather than demolition expert, specialises in reading books, etc.
