Another World’s War follows the exploits of a fighter squadron engaged in a war against mysterious aliens on another world. It follows the template of anime series like Yukikaze and GATE, or like the TV show Stargate: SG-1, where modern Earth has to deal with alien
invaders, and has some success in doing so. Another primary reference is the Ace Combat series of arcade flight video games, for their real-world aircraft and vehicles, combined with dramatic plots, large scale battles, larger-than-life characters, and sci-fi superweapons.

It is a game of action, intrigue and adventure. It will be a mix of character and plot development - the primary things - and hi-tech warfare, cool and exotic alien species, bizarre and beautiful landscapes and surprising revelations.
This is a game where armadas of aircraft duke it out in the skies, or rain fire down on the enemy in support of the allies in huge ground battles, or deliver precision support of commando actions. Or where aircraft prowl and sneak through terrain, their pilots a raw bundle of nerves as they struggle to get intelligence on reconnaissance missions deep into enemy territory.
It’s also going to be a hell of a lot of fun, adventure, excitement and awesome moments, driven by the player characters, and their reactions to the world around them.

The whole feel is one of adventure, excitement and action. Realism has it’s place, but the main concern is the adventure, the story, and the action, both personal and in combat.
Building up the bond between the men and women of the 101st will be a big focus of the game, alongside the wider plot of fighting back the Yerrill and discovering their plans long-term, as well as the nature of the enemy in more detail.

*if your character has a desert eagle or some other stupid handcannon as a sidearm, I will mock you forever.

If it is, I call dibbs on a belt-fed sawed-off CETME.

AKS74U and CAR-15 survival rifles are probably going to be the mainstay.

No it's a promise

It's mainly because I want to avoid CoD kiddies who think teh dessert eagul am best gnu!!!1111 because of games and action movies, instead of taking something practical or actually useful and appropriate to a modern fighter pilot.

Or, you know. Handguns.

Anything bigger will get issued when it's needed.

I'm just messing around.
I actually prefer smaller sidearms anyway, due to being less bulky, light, and more easily concealed than those heavy sidearms.

Ditto, and plus there's a lot more choice. They don't get in the way as much either when you've got to wear all of that flight gear and then wriggle into a cockpit as well.

Yeah, sorry it took so long. There were some interferences from the dreaded Real Life. That and I had a good amount of detail I really wanted to add. Glad we're moving now, and looking forward to seeing your character too.

iirc, survival rifles are tucked into a compartment under the ejection-seat.

They were developed pretty much due to the realization that bringing a pistol to a stand-up gunfight is a bad idea.
-Such as the GAU-5/A, with a nominal barrel length of 10 inches and a half-assed suppressor.
-Later replaced by the GUU-5/P (essentially a rebarreled gun, as they retained the GAU-5's full-uto giggle-switch)

'course that's survival-kit stuff lodged deeply into the escape-kit, and not really a "sidearm" one wanders around base with.
-Unless you're a hangar-sentry, ofc.
-Plus, this is the upper-limit of what can be crammed into that compartment.
--The upside is you generally get six or seven mags of tracer-rounds for it, pretty much a "No batteries required" means of directing close air support when pucker-factor reaches twelve. (here, having a range that exceeds "suicidally danger-close" and full-auto for CAS are good things)

I've looked into it in the past, and it's really hard to find definitive 'yes' or 'no' answers if they're part of survival kit. There's lots of accounts about them being looked into, and people mentioning they carried them in helicopters, or in transports, but trying to find anything concrete about them in fighters is teeth-gnashingly frustrating.
That borne in mind, I'm going to say let's just stick with handguns for the meantime, and we can burn that horse when it comes to the flaming bridge later.
TBH, with the decades we live in now, there's a whole mess of weapons that are small and suitable enough - MP7's, MP5K's, TMP's, etc etc, so I'll probably just invoke some rule that the Expeditionary Force decided to standardise on something like that for the sake of practicality and ease.
As I said though, it's not hugely important in the narrative - it's a gun that shoots things, and as we're not using stats, it's just stylistic fluff anyway what kind of gun it is. And since we're living in the fictional world, it can be whatever kind of gun makes practical sense. Something small and adaptable would fit.

Are a nation's air force roundels assumed to be on aircraft, or are they optional for the pilot to keep?

Hmm, good question and one I hadn't considered.
I'm going to say that the national insignia stay, but there are operational ID markings and other stencils as part of the Expeditionary Force applied elsewhere too.
From what I understand from reading about accounts of units in the field and on combat operations, regs for markings and colours tend to end up a bit relaxed by necessity after a while, so it's probably a case of making sure something works in the field and can be done easily several times.

Fighter pilots.

CoD mentality. CoD mentality, everywhere.
-Apparently one Tomcat-jockey would check a MAC-10 out of the ship's weapons-locker for every mission.
-One Marine aviator tried requisitioning an M79 LAW, successfully. His WSO filled-out paperwork for a Redeye.

I remember reading the report on the Apache-Longbow rescue mission [this one] that involved a negligent-discharge of an SA85 on final-approach. The round bounced about the cockpit for a bit over an open-mic.
