I'm here to write a story with other players in a moderated game setting and have fun doing it. The "best" way of doing things may not always be the way that's chosen for the sake of the game, but it's a fictional story so there's not a lot of point in debating what would happen if these planes and weapons were really fighting this battle. We can make suggestions and inferences, but at the end of the day the law of plot overrides everything else (see bullet point #11 in the rules section).

It's great that you know all these fun facts and radio codes, etc. Maybe you've flown a military aircraft in combat- I haven't and I'd hazard a guess that most people in this forum haven't either. I may not be Chuck Yeager, but I can speak to some knowledge of what we're trying to do here in a Casual-RP and I think that's what will attract more membership and move the plot along.

<Snipped quote by Foster>

I'm having an absolute blast writing about it.

Pilatus hits the nail exactly on the head here.
It doesn't matter particularly what you know and all the wonderful factoids and technical details, or how many of them get projectile-vomited across the OOC; the point is the story and the setting.

I have stated multiple times in the OP and the rules about what kind of game this is. It's a dramatic (and fun) interpretation of the world, writ large for the purposes of excitement and fantasy, rather than adherence to reality. Some accessions to realism is the salt on the meal, or the guidelines we follow to understand things and work from as a base, rather than the law laid down.
Like he said, the law of plot and the most interesting/most exciting reason to do something, as well as the most convenient way to keep the players involved is the one that will win out, rather than the realism of anything, or what's 'best' in terms of tactics in a real world setting. That kind of reasoning is why, for example, we still have aircraft that are retired in the game - because it makes it more fun.

If that's not to everyone's taste, then sorry to hear that, but it's the game I've put up for people to join, and it's the game I'm running.

I am sorry for not posting for when I initially planned on guys, Monday's and Tuesdays are either the best days for me to post, or the worst. This time around it happened to be the worst despite my planning skills (Which I want to say are amazing but time has shown otherwise). I am hoping to get a post up tonight or one up after work tomorrow.

Also I want to apologize ahead of time due to my lack of understanding in.... To put it bluntly I guess planes in general. Everyone else seems to know a lot more then I do here. So I will do some more research in hopes I can at least keep up a bit but it may not be great.

Tempting as it is for me to chalk it up to 20+ years of fanboyism on the subject(s), most of what I know came from roughly a dozen books at the local public library and trying to consistantly apply that to roleplays.
-One of which was kind enough to go over how to read a vintage 1950's era radar-scope (and later improvements of the PPI).
-Other supplements were US Army training videos of old (obsolete) technology, like audio-only frequency-modulated ground survaillence radar (stuff currently fielded is significantly better, and automated*)

So far, the only "flaw" I'm seeing in the Yerrill fighter planes is that the controls appear to be a tad... "twerky". Which is no-doubt super-abusive to their pilots.

*Still... SICON ftw.

It's not really an issue if you don't know as much; being willing to learn and being enthusiastic in writing and playing is the main thing. If you have the interest in aircraft and such in the first place, then that's a good start. Watch a bunch of YouTube videos, read a lot of webpages and books, and all that kind of stuff - you'll pick it up. You might even learn stuff that we don't, or have forgotten. And as the discussion has gone recently too, realism isn't the most important part anyway, getting into the plot and the feel of the game is.
I'm sure you know enough to have your plane not doing anything completely bizarre or random anyway, and that's good enough too. Just relax and have fun - that's the main point of role-playing it is called a role-playing game after all :)

I haven't described them as such, so I'm not sure where you're getting that from. Might want to watch out with your assumptions there.

Nonetheless, the Yerill had not fought Earth's forces and put them on the ropes through idleness. With manoeuvers the were near gravity-defying and certainly beyond the limits of human physiology and engineering, the remaining fighters regrouped with near right-angle turns and surged back in at their attackers, splitting evenly into leading and trailing groups and keeping separation as they closed in, sensors already scouring the skies for the MiGs that had hurt their numbers. Warbling lock-on warnings sounded for Clem, Xi and Lonnie.

Quite a few G's need to be pulled to manage those sorts of manuvers to make ejection-seat sized course-corrections.
-IE: the Yerrill fighters are manuvering less like planes and more like a series of ejection-seats firing in L-shaped doglegs.

An ICBM composed entirely of obsolete ejection-seats, if you would.

That was supposed to imply that yes, they can pull a lot more G's that us, and corner a lot more sharply and unpredictably. I.e., they are dangerous.
So, o encyclopedia of facts, how do you suggest I show that instead, since you apparently know everything?

Although a bit time-consuming to write, a case-by-case summary of how each of the surviving fighters respond, in order to give emphasis on why they're behaving this way, and what they're trying to do in the process would have painted a clearer picture of what is happening.
-Suitability: Just because they can behave this way, doesn't mean they get a free-pass to do-so whenever. Most people don't Rockford their cars out of the driveway... Although TBH it is frigg'n cool to watch on TV.

Whether this was a clue to their (specific) piloting ability, or some quirk of alien engineering was just an OOC speculation.

I suppose it's even to presume their ground-vehicles are of similar capabilities?
"More graceful than 23,000 tons of flintsteel has any right to be" ~Bolo.

~goes back to double-check how to format a proper 9-line.

(kind used to British Hurricanes vs Daleks types of severe-overmatch, anything less is a welcome surprise)

Since Ranger 2 is down/out, may try and re-introducing a Chinese contingent. Due to the alt-timeline, JF-17s and whatnot aren't available yet. But J-7L and J-7G2s would be. As would the similar Bangladeshi F-7BGI. Would give Xi something to think about.

I was going to wait for Remipa to get a post in, but I should have a post ready to go either way tomorrow/Monday.

Busy night! It looks like we're coming up on a conclusion here. Better get that Osprey in there while the road is blocked.

Looking forward to some good character interaction after the mission.

Bees nesting in the stall warning whistle?

That one appears to be set to warn the pilot of an impending stall at the lowest possible angle of attack (high stall speed of, say, a loaded plane). Which is probably going to cause a few premature warnings.

...

This pun just flew over my head, didn't it?

The F4 Phantom's stall warning is more fun, though.

LOL, you put too much thought into it. It was an analogy for our current game situation: Stall Warning.

I'll stop now.

Hey all. I was away on holiday for something over a week, and honestly? Even before that I wasn't really in the frame of mind, or particularly harbouring any desire to make any posts. Honestly, the enthusiasm for online RP has just died for me.

I was pretty excited about this game to begin with, but really, having to keep defending everything I do as a GM is getting remarkably tedious and has absolutely murdered my enjoyment of the game. And as it was, I was only coming back to RPGuild out of boredom and idle curiosity. This has experience has basically firmly hammered the nail into the coffin for online RP for me; I can get more enjoyment out of writing my own fiction, and tabletop RP scratches my RP itch more than adequately, and with considerably less aggrevation.

Thanks to the vast majority of you who were actually a lot of fun to RP with, and whose characters and posts I really enjoyed and for showing interest in the first place. But I'm pretty much done. Thanks again, and sorry for leaving you hanging for this long with no replies.

Well, since most of the flight-crew appears to have bailed, can the co-pilot passenger take over?

If you want to carry the game on without me, then please feel free. However, I'd suggest you start a new thread for it, as then you'll have full admin control over the posts, and it'll also allow you to attract new players easier. All I'd ask is that if you do you credit me for the original concept if you copy and paste the original intro and background. And rather than anything stupid or embarassing happening to my characters, just quietly write them out.

Transfered to another wing due to offscreen political power-playing for "that war after the war is over" sounds about right.
