When I am bored I do research, my latest foray into the library of the Internet I was awarded with lovely pictures of what you may do with shipping containers.

It also got me to thinking of the kind of stuff most Shipping Containers contain and it is a staggering choice.

Lasthope has old Number 19 a Steam Train and it along with several diesel trains till they ran out of fuel and we used them to collect as many loaded containers or their loads as could be found with minimal fighting; 19 is still engaged in the retrieval of industrial equipment that can be operated off the Hydroelectric plant. Lasthope has a large number of Warehouses to contain any replacement parts and equipment near the railroad tracks.

We do have operating Natural gas engines and three natural gas wells under our control; Comber doesn’t think it feasible to try and seize the Mist Fields because they are to the Northwest of Portland and the Pirates still active enough to be a problem. We don’t have the population resources to commit as yet but they are an eventual acquisition necessary to Lasthope’s dreams of a future where we don’t fall too far backwards as a species.

To that end the Diesel trains are being currently converted to operate on natural gas which has always been possible and in the old world even discussed but cost and hardheaded they never put into effect.

We do have some heavy equipment already converted and the only reason we don’t use them for everything is we don’t have enough of the replacement parts needed; construction equipment is maintenance intensive. Because of that their use is tightly controlled, one guy was mean looked at every council he attended till the New Year's Party when Lasthope People are supposed to forgive their fellow citizens and family for being a dumbshit all because he was pushing for making them into armored cars and sweeping the Portland Pirates. The Loaders, Trackhoe, Dozers, and the Cranes are treasured because without them our big projects such as the 60 mile long combination Earthworks wouldn’t have been built in 3 years, which I add cost us several of the pieces of equipment we started with. Now they are used to Maintain the earthworks and and our infrastructure.

Comber's Domes

He didn't invent it but while he was the Chief Ranger of Mount hood he attended a Disaster conference and saw the shelters and how they were manufactured, took his guys three years to figure out how to produce locally.
The Canvas is made out of a fast-growing Hemp using an old formally abandoned mill in the town of Cascade Locks whose equipment we poached and brought home

During the fall of Portland to the Risen, people in the surrounding area fled to Hayden Island and blocked the bridges and finally got smart enough to fortify the Large covered docks near Highway 5 bridge and use the watercraft available to make forays for supplies and during the Winter of year 2 make their first attempts at sweeping the Risen from the Island; it was also the same year David Yi a former Gang leader who worked as a boat builder Declared himself the Warlord Feng and began the systematic capture of Hayden and later in year 4 the City of Portland itself; his attempt to take Vancover was thwarted when the people there destroyed the bridge forcing him to risk his precious boats and fuel to take and eventually give up.

The Pirate aspect of this violent Warlord is of his own invention because the only traffic on the river is the occasional sailboat which he of course insists his men take; can’t really be a pirate if you never commit crimes on or from water.

In year 6 he controlled and estimated 3,900 gang members and 12,000 slaves he kept in line with brutal reprisals and punishment and managed to capture William Henry Scout of Lasthope and through torture that eventually killed old Bill found out that near his city was another community up in the mountains that had things he wanted so he mounted the failed Scouting period known as The Sadie Hawkins Hunt in year 7 because they were caught by a group made up of 26 women out to the Sandy River to check their fish traps; all gathered 12 men were sent and 7 made it to Lasthope breathing because of the Rape of Agness Moore which is how they were so easily captured. Hard to run when your pants down waiting your turn.

The men were stood before the Council and by vote sentenced to death for their crimes and given the choice of Quick if they provided any information useful or slow and bad; they sang like Birds and none are sure if Comber meant to put how they died to a vote his Choice not in normal keeping with the laws of Lasthope but as the matter wasn’t pursued no foul.

Feng Pissed went up river looking for trouble and came on a 200 man party of Troopers who were working on retrieving industrial equipment in the Town of Cascade Locks which is also a prime Salmon Fishing spot on the Columbia and considered by the people as Lasthope territory. The Troopers setup in defensive positions sending out a mayday on their Satellite Phone.

Feng the sort to enjoy violence especially when he outnumbered anyone he was going after 1,200 against 200 where his odds. What he didn’t count on was the Cavalry Charge of 800 people of the Lasthope Bands of the 2nd, 4th, 9th, and 10th lances to the front and our best mounted archers screening their advance with a withering shower of well placed arrows.

Crushed Feng retreated leaving 600 dead and about 100 conscripts still breathing and wondering how they were gonna be Barbecued. Some say that the decision to not hound the Pirates all the way back to Hayden Island was a lost opportunity but in the end would have cost us precious lives; we lost 23 unreplaceable people having to deal with the Beasts that walk like men and suffered 100 wounded as well as lost 82 horses.

Since then Warlord Feng sits in Portland dreaming of how to finish us before we do him and he’s right to think that way because the stories told by the conscripts of his true brutality has a lot of people waiting for the word but till then Comber and the council seem intent on moving into the area’s east of Mount Hood where there is little and no contested lands and resources.
