You know a thread's blown up when Odin joins the fray.

Anyway, I guess I've lurked long enough on the thread to give my own two cents, though I don't think I'm going to be saying anything that hasn't been said before.

I personally find you an idiot if you put stuff like 'only X type of person' in your title. An ignorant, biased individual who needs to learn to separate themselves from their fictional creations- granted you don't have a diagnosed disability for those sorts of situations. People get too emotionally attached to something they're not, and restrict others because they're too conceited and ego-centered. I may be using strong language, but I do genuinely think you need to get over yourself if you actually care what the other person's got hiding in their pants.

On that note, however, I do agree with the whole 'you can't stop it' point. While I do enjoy discussion like this, I don't think it's going to change anything in either the short or the long term. The only people that would check out this thread already have, and it's been made pretty clear that people in RP discussion aren't prone to changing their mind. I think the focus shouldn't be on witch hunting those who do or don't do it, or calling each other out on practices they do or don't do. Nor do I think the focus should be on jumping at each other's throats. The focus should be more on reaching a conclusion posed by the intial question: is it wrong? And, I think there's already been a clear conclusion drawn amidst all this chaos; Yes, it's 'wrong' to do it, but ignorance will find a way.

I don't think people are wrong with it having roots in sexism, but I disagree on using that term. I think misguided or ignorant might be better, as sexism is a pretty strong accusation to hurl at someone in which they will be on their most defensive once accused. It doesn't breed healthy conversation in my eyes, and especially not with the crowd that likes to frequent these threads (no offense to anyone meant by that).

I can't really say the whole issue has ever affected me, though. I'm not a 1x1 roleplayer.

I can confirm that @Altered Tundra is definitely not a Nazi apologist. He's a leftie. And he's right. All the ignorance I've seen in this thread hasn't been from those who do discriminate gender or defend those who do. It's been from those stubbornly against it that have only looked at the issue with the narrowest perspective possible.

This is quickly becoming an uncivil discussion and there is never a reason to be attacking another individual for their opinion. With that said, I agree 100% that gender is irrelevant when it comes to Roleplaying, but I also feel that Roleplayers have the right to their own preferences. I always perceive it as a matter of comfort. If someone doesn't feel comfortable writing with the opposite/same sex, then that's totally fine, but they're probably going to miss out on some golden opportunities.

Anyway, that's my quick two cents. I have to return to writing a paper on pit bulls. Thanks for reading.

Ciao.

How is that relevant to excluding roleplayers based on gender.

It isn't.

I'm a bisexual woman and I Roleplay with all genders equally. When I was younger, I might have been more inclined to Roleplay with females though. My reasons would be entirely comfort based as I was sexually abused by a male as a child and encountered (vastly male) perverts while on the internet which was a little scary for a thirteen-year-old. In my opinion, abuse and bad experiences are entirely valid reasons to request NOT Roleplaying with one gender.

Could it be ignorant? Yes, it can be. We still have to remember that the Guild does cater to a wide range of ages and backgrounds, however, and we should at least attempt to be open-minded. If someone requests to only Roleplay with one gender, then that is entirely their choice. Roleplayers have the right to preferences, after all.

To start off, I'm really sorry to learn that you got abused when younger. So my sympathies go to you.

That said, this is a reason (I never thought of) as to why people may be selective and both sexist. As you said you were wary of makes, and as much as that is a reason there are 100 more that fit this category of thinking and are not necessarily sexist. Yes it may limits one's options but there's no point in placing your personal self in an uncomfortable state just because others say that you must treat all equally.

Straight men looking to write smut with someone else don't do it merely for the artistic quality of the prose they're writing. It's a fulfillment of a sexual fantasy. If they're straight and their writing partner is a man that might break the spell of sexuality of the whole thing, because to them it's only exciting if it's written with a female writing partner. They fantasize about the idea that what they're writing is also turning the female writing partner on. Because they're straight, it simply isn't interesting to them to write that kind of content with a roleplayer they know to be a guy. It defeats the entire purpose.

That isn't sexism. It's heterosexuality.

Dude, speak for yourself. I don't know about the rest of the men on this site but I could be playing the raunchiest kinkiest smuttiest dirtiest 1x1 ERP and for some reason I don't feel like my sexuality takes a ding if my RP partner turns out to be a man too. You're right that this is a fantasy but I'm not having any fantasies about the other player it's all about the RP itself and the characters. There's no 'breaking the spell' or 'lost interest' if my partner is a man, as long as the characters are straight. Maybe we have a very different idea of what the purpose of these RPs is and I agree that it might not be sexism, but what you're saying sounds a lot like homophobia instead.

Maybe I'm the odd man out that I can still get into it without feeling like my sexuality is being questioned but don't act like you're the mouthpiece for all straight men on this forum. I don't give a flying fuck if my smut rp partner is a guy, a girl, or an alien (tentacles preferred please.)

Cheers!

I was describing the kind of men who specify that they're looking for a female RP partner that they want to write smut with, @Visionaryness. Evidently that doesn't include you.

Heterosexuality (being sexually attracted to the opposite gender to the exclusion of all else) isn't homophobia either. The way you wrote your post makes it sound like it's somehow phobic to have a strong sexual preference. Their sexuality isn't being questioned when they write smut with a guy, it isn't being activated at all. Why bother?

That's you. I personally make a distinction between character and roleplayer, but Hank is not wrong in saying that there are in fact people as he described. Between the post you quoted and the post I just quoted, the case is clear - there's many ways that people approach the same thing.

You have your way. I have my way. Hank presented another way.

At the end of the day, it is not a case of "one definition fits all".

That's more an unfortunate part in word choice and the ability to convey messages on a forum. Some people will still talk in male/female directives, while others will include all gender identities—personal preference and wording habbits. Cast your range too wide and people believe you're over complicating too much, too thin and you get told you're a narrow minded individual.

I think what's more important is the underlying meaning that someone is expressing, not a choice in a single word that apparently breaks down the entire argument when pulled apart and analysed. He's not stating your decisions and choices are wrong, just that there are other views to take into consideration.
