Yup, you got it! Probably while he was a pirate, I can just come up with reasons he's not with his crew.
My reasoning is that we could post the PM 1x1 later as a flashback chapter, which would satisfy the character's introduction into the story. We can swing by that character's island to pick them up with a smaller adventure in the main RP, some introductions among the characters, then we'll be off to the next. I love the character intro story method, but I don't love that everyone is forced to wait so long for a chance to write, haha.
A downside is that other PCs wouldn't be involved with the intro adventure, which kinda sucks.
We could totally do both! If you (or multiple players!) would prefer to do your intro through PM, drop me a message! Otherwise we'll do your intro in the main RP as originally planned. Both are great. :D
