Hmm, I came to think about a thing since we now dive into territory regarding the shaping of society, religion and the like. How will the philosophical progressiin be like, given that all mindsets and thoughtpatterns are inherited by philosophers of old. Will we still have the German philosophers with the same ideals and with Hume's critical mind attacking, well, the Norse religion now instead? As in, just have some equivalents of those. Or will we have to build up aat completely new philosophical background?

I mean, since we will discard Christianity, it's also plausible that the discrimination of women never took place, which would explain how women could even attend school, but it also removes the importance that certain early feminist philosophers like Olympe de Gouges and Mary Wollstonecraft which made way for them to have a role in society. I imagine such philosophy is less needed if the world already accept women, given how the Viking era was basically men rule the sea, women rule the homes kind of dichotomy.

Oh dear, things are getting complicated. Exciting!

Those are some interesting thoughts. I'd say that they religion would likely consolidate differently over time (kinda steering towards the something similar to Valkyria Profile's religion), but their philosophy wouldn't change too much immediately.

Western philosophy is largely dependent on Classic Greek and Roman thought schools. If nothing else, having a society that never transitioned to rigid monotheism but instead kept open to the trading of ideas that most polytheistic societies seemed to be pretty chill about would allow for some modern schools of thought to blossom far earlier. At the very least, the society as a whole would be more advanced and educated because the Church actively forbid non-clergy people from learning pretty much anything for a good part of history.

Long term political stability would have suffered, though. Some modern nations analogous to France would have little to no reason to exist simply because a "Charlemagne" wold have no way of existing. Which probably means that various Celtic cultures are still the norm, or were so for a long time before congealing into some semblance of order.

It's a heavy speculative setting, especially if there are some very light fantasy elements involved. Certainly with lots of possibilities to toy with.

Anyway, as far as science and philosophy goes, I'm certain that there would be substantial advancements.

Mmh, yes, actually both Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire wouldn't really be a thing. Gosh, this makes an interesting mess out of things.

I even toyed around in my head with the idea that the Imperium Romanum didn’t fall outright – provinces broke away when it focused more on issues with the Turks, Persians, and Saracens, sure, so that’s something to consider. Though, as for advancements I’m not quite sure how far scientifically I’m comfortable with given my interest here is very much in the WW1/WW2 spectrum. Y’know. Biplanes, bolt-action rifles, tanks, and the whole shebang.

That’s not even taking into account that the capital of the United Kingdom is probably still Camelot.

Oh, we don't have to have advanced technology in these fields. In fact, I'm sure that it would likely not be the case depending on the most usual source of power. While I think that mechanical computers could certainly be a thing (depends on how Babbage's ideas would have fared in this world), nothing much more advanced than that has no need to exist.

I mean, even if the science is advanced, engineering problems would still hold it back. And engineering problems aren't solved just with better science. Technology needs time to evolve, especially in the field of materials. Much more advanced tech would require the era of steam to be pushed to earlier periods in time which is certainly displeasing.

The advantage of this kind of setting is that you can cherry pick what you want or not from story. Valkyria Chronicles is a good example of that with how no one (very mysteriously) invented a functioning airplane before the first game but they had enough tech to build something such as the Edelweiss, which looks to be at least 40 years ahead of its time.

Anyway, the idea is to do something that's most entertaining for us, since all of this is made up stuff. I prefer the 10's aesthetics with some embellishments and or occasional quirks.

That’s not even taking into account that the capital of the United Kingdom is probably still Camelot.

That made me laugh more than I should.

Anyway, I have to go sleep now. If everything is ok, I can try to get an IC post tomorrow.

Nadia left herself quite open once more. It would be a shame if no one took the chance to tease her.

I don’t know if 15-19 °C (late 50s, early 60s in Fahrenheit) is particularly “hot weather”. Outside of a few degrees is it even that different from #notFinland?

@Inkarnate

I mean, that's hot in Southern Norway, and in Northern Norway it barely breaks 20C once or twice a year. Finland is the same.

Apologies for the delay on my end. I completely forgot I still had to make a sheet for this RP, as I had told Ink. I'll try to have the sheet done by the end of the weekend, or at least Monday.

No worries. Considering how much we have to struggle just to navigate the Guild these days, delays are to be expected.

Yeah, I've started to receive bad gateway errors on my end once more. Went right over the top of my head that I never even started the character sheet.

Anyway, just waiting for Ink to get back on my idea for a tomboy American (that is, whatever America is in this alternative setting). Maybe spice it up a bit.

I hope this is okay!

Aisling Kavanagh

Name
Aisling Kavanagh

Age
16

Class Year
4th

Nationality
United Kingdom of Albion, from the island of Éire

Appearance
There's nothing elegant or refined about Aisling's appearance and at a simple glance it's easy to detect the presence of a pauper amongst princesses. It starts at the top with her hair. A messy mop of dark red that looks as if it hasn't known proper brushing or washing and the uneven bangs suggest someone cuts with a mirror in one hand and scissors in the other. Her height is almost the only thing of note, at a flat five foot five, and even then it hardly makes up for anything. Her posture doesn't do her height any favors nor does her physique which is gangly slender on the best of days. Often she had been known to attire herself in the rags of a newspaper boy, suspenders, trousers, a newsy hat, and a scruffy shirt. She's more comfortable in clothing like that due to familiarity even as it makes her appear boyish at a cursory glance. She never quite learned the proper ins and outs of femininity. A bright spot on her otherwise dirty peasant appearance are her eyes which have a sparkling seagreen gleam to them. Her fingers, perhaps her most important trait, are small and slender and the pads of her fingers are rough from prior callusing. Even should Aisling be dressed in attire befitting that of noble or wealthy birth, it would only be like putting a mud soaked pig in a ballgown.

Background
If the hair didn't make it clear, her rough manner of speaking along with the obvious Celtic brogue paints her as a native of Éire, an island nation of the United Kingdom of Albion noted for its hills and greenery of which Aisling never really got to see. Her mother died delivering her and her father, even before taking to the drink after losing his wife, was never one to hold a job for more than a few months at a time. Aisling thus spent her childhood without the comfort of a stable house relying on the kindness of strangers or the sailors and shipmen that often made port in the city. Begging was what she knew until a better way presented itself.

Aisling, finding an old violin left to decay in an alley, took to the instrument immediately. The strings needed replacing and tightening and the bow was snapped, but a few odd jobs for the locals - delivering foodstuffs mostly - resulted in Aisling trading upwards in order to fix or replace the parts. It was not perfect, but it was hers and she played it daily and nightly. At first it was atrocious, but having little else to do during the day meant she had time to practice. By the time she was thirteen she had been playing in the streets,
busking her way to warm food at night.

It wasn't all daisies and roses. Busking was hardly a means of living and Aisling's father was unreliable and increasingly angered by his young daughter making more money than he was, even if it wasn't much at all. Always thinking Aisling killed his wife, he made a deal with a trade vessel. A quick payday for Aedan Kavanagh came at the cost of Aisling working for food on the return voyage to the main island of Albion as the ship musician. She was dumped unceremoniously in Albion with only a violin and small hands and a few tricks of the trade picked up on the voyage over.

Busking was much harder here so Aisling turned, like many of the urchins of the day, to sleight of hand and pickpocketing. She only took enough to feed herself, but the reputation of a thief caught up with her after picking the pocket of someone she really shouldn't have. She tried to run away to no avail and her punishment was her violin being smashed to pieces in front of her.

How a girl like Aisling ended up at The Academie de L’Espoir is anybody's guess and only Aisling and the one who brought her there know what went down, though her only merit is that of her musical ability. Perhaps someone saw potential in a little street urchin. She stands out for all the wrong reasons but at least there's a roof and food, provided she keeps her nose clean.

Affinities & Talents
Musical Aptitude
Physical Athletics
Economics

Additional Information
Nothing at the moment, but perhaps more to come down the road.
