The Town of Minazawa. A fairly peaceful place, Minazawa is located near central Japan and is considered to be a perfectly ordinary town. Well... with a few exceptions. If one thing about Minazawa could be thought of as anything other than ordinary, then that must be the plethora of urban legends. Hauntings, youkai sightings, all kinds of things are nearly constantly reported in Minazawa. In this otherwise ordinary town, it seems as if the residents want to spice things up with all kinds of myths. From rumors of Hanako-san haunting every single bathroom in every single building, to claims that a fox spirit haunts the abandoned shrine at the edge of town, to the famed myth of the beautiful lady vampire that visits the richest district of Minazawa every year, there's no end to the different supernatural rumors circulating throughout the town's residents.

Of course, most of the people of Minazawa don't take this seriously. Rather, there's a sort of fun to it, the rumor that such things could exist, that spices up everyday life. 'Investigation clubs' have sprung up of all sorts, in order to get to the bottom of mysteries like the vanishing alleyway or the hidden secret district that only appears once a week. Some legitimately believe that there's something supernatural afoot in the town, but most of the residents feel that it's simply a way to have fun.

It's in this regard that the people of Minazawa are wrong.

Hauntings, youkai, vampires, phantoms, wielders of magic... It's all real. All of it. A secret second layer of the world, beneath the common world of modern man.

And soon, the mundane first layer and the supernatural second layer of the world will intersect.

So, this is a new attempt at an RP set in my urban fantasy setting! For some background, here's some information I have recorded on the setting as a whole. For a quick primer on things likely to appear in the RP...

  • Magi: Capable of magic, invoked by spells and symbols, sometimes in conjunction with one another. Magical prowess is passed through bloodlines, some families having more or less mana(and higher or lower quality mana) then others. Magi will have an affinity, which can range from things like fire to gravity to numbers. Affinities(which are also passed through bloodlines) are not limited to the affinity itself, but also includes things that are conceptually linked to it. For example, a mage with an affinity for fire would also excel at spells involving "consumption", "ignition", and "destruction". Magi can preform spells outside their affinity, though it is more difficult to learn. Affinities cannot be for anything entirely man-made. Playable!
    • Note: The most powerful mage(in terms of raw power) in this setting has an affinity for mana. They will not be appearing in this RP, and mana as an affinity is strictly off-limits. Other affinities that are off limits include Death, a totally unique affinity also claimed in this setting and absolutely broken for the purposes of this RP.
  • Onmyouji: Magical practioners utilizing onmyodo as opposed to western methods of magic. They are similar(magic is passed through bloodlines, they have the same affinities), yet their methods are fundamentally different. Effectively they use the same magic, but with different methods. Onmyouji use ofuda to cast spells, which can be applied to objects or even bodies for a variety of effects. Onmyouji are also adept at preforming exorcisms. Playable!
    • Magic Traits: Some magi and onmyouji families possess a special "magic trait", an inherent magical ability connected to their affinity. These are quite uncommon, but they still exist. They require no spellcasting, and usually give some edge in ability. The magic trait "Illusion Break", for example, passively destroys illusions as the mage or onmyouji draws close to them. It also enables them to see through illusions.
  • Youkai: The various supernatural beings native to the country of Japan. There are a fair number of their kind located in Minazawa City. These days, many kinds of youkai have a humanoid appearance, but some do not. There are many that can coexist with humanity, but there are also many that are dangerous creatures that must be hunted. The more human-like youkai can crossbreed with humans. Playable!

As for the main thrust of this RP, we'll be playing members of the Minazawa Investigation Agency, which will form over the course of the initial arc. From there, various supernatural incidents will occur, often featuring dangerous creatures and other such hazards, that must be resolved. Naturally, the Minazawa Investigation Agency will be in charge of resolving them.

  • Name:
  • Age:
  • Gender:
  • Race: Youkai characters are permitted, but I'd prefer at least a few humans rather then an all-youkai cast.
  • Appearance:
  • Personality:
  • Abilities:
  • Skills:
  • Equipment:
  • Brief Backstory:

Yo, Vita! How's it going?

This looks like a lot of fun, so I think I'll toss my hat in the ring for this one as well. If you don't mind - and assuming everyone else isn't already doing the same - I think I'll end up playing a Youkai - a Jorogumo, to be specific.

Looking forward to it~

Checking in, letting ya know that I am working on a character at the moment. As of right now, he'll be a Magi, thinking with an affinity for Divine/Holy spheres of magic. As for an actual trait though, I have yet to pin one down yet.

Working on a CS, but it'll be rather slow thanks to being limited to only being able to be on the phone.

Interesting, I may put something together. Probably a loose cannon Onmyouji of some sorts

WHEW. Sorry about the length of this one. I got really carried away trying to do minor worldbuilding for Jorōgumo spiders relative to other Youkai. If it's too long, I can just state things more simply. Just kinda wanted to lay out not only her current abilities - which is to say, that she's absolutely terrible - but also to kind of give a general idea about what she might be like at the apex of her potential power/growth.

I also took a few liberties with the fundamentals of Youkai abilities, so if I misinterpreted how those actually work in this setting, I'd be happy to edit. Most of her "abilities" aren't really that important or relevant save the energy drain stuff and the last couple, anyhow.

...Also, she might have turned out to be slightly more of a gag character than I originally intended. If it's too much and you wanted more serious stuff, not to worry, I can tone back some of her quirks in more serious scenes.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you think of her, and to hopefully RPing with you again, Vita!~

Hey this looks pretty interesting!

As for Magi Affinities, is there a list made up already or can we make up our own?

@Feyblue: I'll take a better look at it tomorrow, since it's quite late right now. ^^;

@Seirei No Hai: You can create affinities, but they have to be something that occurs naturally. For example, you can have an affinity for wood, which would give you an advantage when using spells involving paper, but you can't have an affinity for paper.

I'll hopefully have my own CS done tomorrow or on the weekend.

Naturally? What if I wanted an affinity for metal but my spells involve anything manmade?

@Seirei No Hai There are plenty of naturally occurring metals, both in pure forms (Such as Gold, Silver, Copper, and platinum metals) as well as the stuff like iron-nickel alloys from meteorites and the like. (Needless science chatter, huzzah!)

This wikipedia article covers native metals, if it'll help.

Wouldn't the Affinity be called Earth if that was the case?

I guess it would

Earth could certainly be a more generic moniker for the affinity, but its just my opinion on the matter. I feel like you could certainly be more specific with metal, but I'll leave the actual verdict with Vita.

@Seirei No Hai: You can involve manmade things in your spell, it's just that the affinity itself won't be "bullet" or whatever. Also, affinities are not a limit. It's what your best at, but you can use spells outside of your affinity.

Anyway I'll look at stuff in a bit.

@VitaVitaAR More a small thing I'd like to be sure of: for our CS, should our characters have their names arranged as in Japanese (surname, given name), or is a Western arrangement fine?

@Jurassic Weeb: Well, when I name a character I use the name order their culture uses. You don't have to do that, but when I record them in a character list I'll use that order. ^^;

Oh yeah I was about to ask that. I went for surname, given name for my character.

It should be up sometime tonight. Formating and making CS's look pretty on phones is hard

@Feyblue: While there's plenty that's fine, there's an issue in that youkai, in-setting, are very much flesh and blood creatures. Those with spiritual bodies explicitly are spiritual beings(such as youkai defined by being phantoms). This holds true for all ghosts(who actually can obtain physical form, more like what you said there) but that's getting into a whole other topic there.

Just try to make sure posts are easy to interact with as well as written well. When it gets on the very long side it can get overwhelming to properly respond to for other players. ^^;

@TheFake: Seems fine to me, accepted.

Anyway, as for my bio...

  • Name: Midorikawa Fumie
  • Age: 16
  • Gender: Female
  • Race: Hanyou. In her case, she has oni blood.
  • Appearance: Black hair, gold eyes, light skintone. Fumie is pretty short.
  • Personality: Among her fellow students, Fumie is known as a serious and diligent girl who always stays on top of her schoolwork. She's also known for her sharp temper and tendency to become angry at others rather easily. She dislikes being bothered or hung on, and she won't hesitate at all to complain about anyone she feels is behaving in a stupid manner. To put it simply, she isn't one to keep her mouth shut when she sees someone acting like an idiot, at least in her opinion. Additionally, she is also a rather prideful girl, who sometimes takes a rather smug sense of satisfaction in seeing that she was right about something. In spite of her serious nature, Fumie is not entirely without a somewhat sarcastic sense of humor, even if it's mostly born of of frustration at others. As could likely be expected, she's not exactly the most friendly person, but will usually attempt to help the people around her if asked. However, there is another side to Fumie's personality. Fumie is a youkai hunter, one from a long line of those who hunt dangerous creatures that stalk the night and threaten the world of humans. This is a secret she keeps from anyone who is not a member of her family, a duty assigned to her that she carries out with pride. Fumie is entirely dedicated to the work of a youkai hunter, handling it seriously and without hesitation. Still, she absolutely takes pride in her capabilities as well. However... Her ancestry isn't without its negative effects. When utilizing the full extent of her oni blood, Fumie's behavior becomes more erratic and aggressive, and she finds it more difficult to control her actions. Indeed, it is the boiling blood of an oni that causes her to become far more violent then normal. Finally, Fumie is rather easily flustered and embarrassed, and is self-conscious about her small size.
  • Abilities: Fumie is a hanyou of oni ancestry. This imparts some basic traits of oni to her body. That is to say, she has greatly enhanced physical strength and speed in spite of her small size, and remarkable durability for someone who appears to be fully human. This isn't to say it's impossible to overpower her or harm her. Even if her oni blood, she is still a small, delicate girl and compared to many other supernatural entities she is hardly the strongest or even particularly impervious to physical harm. However, her speed is quite remarkable for someone partially human. Additionally, Fumie is a trained onmyouji, utilizing her affinity for fire. Her chief spells allow her to produce fiery projectiles, and work in tandem with her katana. Aside from that, she is also somewhat adept in performing purification spells, though anyone dedicated to such onmyodo is going to be far more capable of that area. Finally, Fumie is capable of fully accessing her oni ancestry, obtaining a massive boost to her physical abilities, regenerative capabilities, and an enormous outpouring of fire flowing across her body and blade, her hair turning from black to bright red. At its peak, these flames even manifest as a pair of fiery horns. However, giving herself to her oni blood causes her to become more violent and aggressive, a certain madness overtaking her and making it more difficult for her to control herself.
  • Skills: Fumie is quite skilled with a sword for her age, having been trained since she was quite young. Additionally, she is quite apt when it comes to schoolwork. In spite of her size, she does well in PE, though this is likely due to the influence of her oni blood. The most valuable skill in her arsenal, however, is Onikiri, a youkai-killing sword stroke created to slaughter even the most powerful of malevolent youkai.
  • Equipment: Fumie wields a katana that is also considered a family heirloom, a weapon that is both extremely sharp and imbued with fire. Hinomaru, as the sword is named, was made with the explicit purpose of slaying youkai. This isn't to say that it can't kill anything aside from youkai, but its very nature is as an anti-youkai existence. Beyond that, Fumie carries numerous ofuda for use in her spells.
  • Brief Backstory: Fumie is the daughter of the Midorikawa family, a very old and prestigious family that has existed in Minazawa for the entirety of the town's existence. Dwelling in a very old, expansive Japanese mansion, there are few who would believe that the true nature of the Minazawa is a family of youkai hunters. Indeed, so dedicated to their duty are the Minazawa family that they long ago crossbred with oni, a pact between a specific local clan and the Midorikawa, in order to enhance their capabilities to hunt dangerous creatures that threatened humanity. Fumie is no exception to this fact, herself a hanyou with a high level of oni blood, nearly half. Of course, this isn't immediately apparent by looking at her. Throughout her childhood, she was trained in the art of the sword, and in onmyodo, in order to fashion her into a youkai hunter just as the rest of her bloodline. Due to the illness of her mother and the death of her father, however, she was unexpectedly thrust into active duty as a youkai hunter when she was only thirteen years old. Now in high school, she conducts her duty as secretively as possible, even while her fellow students consider her to be a delicate and doll-like girl.

@VitaVitaARUnderstood~! Like I said, I kinda got super carried away this time around, both because when describing the character I kept coming up with stupid gags I couldn't bear to remove, and because I ended up going way overboard on Youkai stuff, since I'm a bit of a geek about those sorts of things. (I love Youkai legends, they're great. :D)

Anyway, removed Astral Body ~ False and edited some of the descriptions of other powers to remove mention of astral stuff. Was there anything else I needed to edit?
