I already am participating (and leading some of them) over a dozen roleplays. I am not going to treat my players disrespectfully just to “prove” anything to you or others. But you are correct that those who want to do Arena (whatever way it is designed) should just do it. If people have time and energy to devote they should do it. But I can see why they might not want to given the pushback and sentiment given here in this thread. Role-playing is a fickle hobby and people are going to join and not stick around. But if you want Arena to rejuvinated and not be a decaying waste of space you want to make sure those newcomers want to stay around.

You aren't going to do it because you have no real investment in the arena worth putting your schedule in jeopardy. That means you have no intention of actually being one of the movers who can give that change you are subscribing for the rest of the arena. Then don't pretend it has anything to do with pushback and don't pin it on me or anyone else. There's no pushback. You are free to make things happen right now, tomorrow, or next week and no one is going to protest about it. Now people may say things (I've had this treatment happen too much around here) but if you really care you'd ignore it and play until you're finished.

The purpose of role-playing is collaborating creative ideas and creating a story.

Miss me with that bullshit. The purpose of roleplaying is to play a role. That's it. It's basically an offshot of old RPGs made into text form from muds. People back in AOL in the late 90s were already establishing fight rules and shit and then when Toonami threw Gundam in a bunch of mecha/anime gundam roleplays came with an influx of new and current players. The story is there whether or not it's from exhibitions or elaborate works on plot and even then most of it was impromptu.

Basically a bunch of kids played too many RPGs and Final Fantasies then decided to make something out of it. The long expanding stories was a bonus for those who actually finish and the story reached a conclusion (cause either players leave or lose interest). It was never some big thing to tell the next Harry Potter that's that new wave 2003 shit when forums were kicking off and you can write beyond character limits on your ISP's chat based services.. or those who had a story from the chat days thinking it'd resonate real good with others. A lot of seasoned players could weave a story from a bunch of poorly connected tavern fights and eventually make something canon, and PVP was always there.

In my opinion that supersedes any precedent of an “alpha mentality” that suggests arena-oriented roleplay is inherently competitive.

Alpha mentality to someone soft I assure you. Roleplaying was always a game first. Roleplaying on the net came from text based graphic muds and then became tavern chat stuff with a lot of fighting in it(I mean if you wanna call it that). The game was always both. You cannot try to separate it because no matter where you go it'd eventually creep up on you: someone is going to want to fight. There's always a rookie who wants to know how to fight in this game and they write like 3 sentences. You can't escape it. You can discourage them. You can throw them elsewhere. That can work, but plugging your ears and ignoring a "problem" doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

It's interconnected. Anyone who loves this game can appreciate both.

I hope you get what you want out of the section in the future.

I already got what I wanted. Dynamo just asked what regulars thought.

No roleplay is worth putting your schedule in jeopardy, lmao. I ain't going to fuck over my players in already dedicated games or compromise adult responsibilities for hobby writing in a gamble in Arena. What in the fucking world.

Miss me with that shit.

Oh please. You act like writing up a thread "for fun" and not "winning" is somehow going to eat up your time. You aren't fooling anybody. Now if this was an exhibition match and you needed to think and judge: then yeah you need some hours I could understand, but you offered an alternative to fighting for funises so really it should take you a half hour or less to crank 3 paragraphs tops with a friend of yours.

You just have no conviction. Don't blame real life we all got work.

Hahaha, come off it, Mobius. I have a limited allocation of time and I already am commited to several role-plays. I don't know why it is so hard to comprehend that little fact. Unless you are somehow this impeccable god with infinite time who can manage a full-time job and over a dozen roleplays that require your attention. There is no intention to “fool” anyone, so don't come at me with that shallow infantile rhetoric. This is my last reply to you and this conversation. Do not mention me or quote me. I'm going to be the adult and walk the fuck away before I end up wasting my entire section of free time of the night arguing this bullshit.

Ciao.

Come, now. Isn't the whole point of this to improve? Squabbling amongst ourselves won't resolve anything..

Yeah, okay I'm not typing in purple this time.

Yall fighting amongst yourselves is a huge turn away. No one wants to play with people who are too busy fighting to think up something fun. I'd rather us think up things to do together than arguing over things like mods and stuff.

If toxic players are as bad as some people say, then action should take place. If some people think the tournaments need a revamp or that rules need changikg, lets discuss that instead of the true meaning of winning in fights. Role play is for fun, but some people do it for competition, so laughing at how serious they take it is kind of insulting. How about we cater to our audience a little? A little change to the rules, or a few serious tournaments, and maybe a banks two really couldn't hurt could it?

I mean, it seems you all take this pretty seriously, and I can see why. There are a lot of great characters in the arena, and a shit ton of lore. Surely you can think up something with these characters together? I mean, my character is an Indian girl who comtrols mandala sand and has the blessing of the Hindu God of love. That premise alone is enough to make a tv show, with good enough writing lol.

I propose a brain storming session, instead of flame wats over fighting styles.

I've been looking back through the Arena pages and can't find this Newby Tournament that keeps being referenced. Was it called something else?

You could call it "irrelevant" if you like, Dias. It'd be best if that argument weren't continued. For the sake of everyone's maturity please.

@Dias Blade I forget what it was called, and honestly I can't be bothered to try and find it. It would be hard to locate because it was broken up into 5 different threads. None of the fights actually ended. Things just kind of fizzled out for a number of reasons.

What were those reasons?

I found something called the "New Beginnings" tournament. Do you think that was it?
Can you remember how long ago it was? The pages only go back 5 years, which I assume is related to what folks have been calling GuildFall. But I was under the impression said tournament in question happened after the server crash.

EDIT: Ah, so it was the New Beginnings one. Mmk.

@Dias Blade

There was a wee bit of discord drama. The people managing it were also divided in opinion, and it was the sort of thing where people were arguing how it should be run as the character sheets were coming in. So as a result something that could have had a lot of support lost it all. I also feel some of the character sheets shouldn't have been accepted without some revisions. A pyro mouse that moves at the speed of sound?

There was room for improvement.

Actually, I'd say the non-responses with memes or just general acting in a disrespectful manner is a more precise display of toxic behavior. You'll notice, Mobius was responding to Inkarnate. What reason did Tex have to make that post?

Trolling is toxic. Its pretty easy to sort out who is Trolling and who isn't. If you say something or make a point to someone, if you're honestly trying to be civil and have productive dialogue then I think everyone can agree that the response given to you should be intellectual and not disingenuous. That's why when I see accusations of "Arena being toxic" but I'm sitting her observing those not really from the Arena exhibiting actual toxic behavior, it A) hurts their credibility and B) doesn't encourage showing respect.

Respect is a two way street.

Aye. This is going nowhere, not even slowly going towards something, it's just a back and forth that is increasingly pushing everything away from where it's suspected it should go. So we're gonna cut it here.

If something is gonna happen, then it'll happen. Anymore petty back and forth will result in warnings with escalating administrative involvement afterwards. Get back to actually planning something, or, I don't know, just kindly exit.

@Rilla
Perhaps it would be prudent to create a new thread for this particular discussion. As opposed to there being an argument, people can simply put forth their ideas and then after like 72 hours or a week or so, can compile everything and then put it to a vote. Public Polling. That way no one has to guess at just how many actually want said changes since there will be hard numbers. The Poll could be multiple votes too, then say like any ideas that got at least 10 or 20 votes can then go up for Public Debate.

Those who are for said ideas can present their arguments in the Debate, and then those who stand opposed can make their counter arguments. And can give each side an opportunity to respond once or twice. Then close the Debate and conduct voting to determine which side won said debate. If the people agree said idea should be implemented, then it can then be ratified.

That's my suggestion, at any rate.
