First things first, those rallying for "a less toxic atmosphere", "non-competetive activity" and etcetera should just take a step back and realize: there are 'newbies' out there who wanna go in like the US marshals and just kick some fucking ass - real competetive like. That's precisely the new blood that we need and want as a long established and niche community.

Now, the problem in growing the community might lay in the fact that RP fighting as a whole is on the decline and our target recruits are simply too dispersed to cross paths with RPGuild's cluster - which only means that the best of us must haul ass, find new places and become nomadic fighting legends ala Musashi with fame reaching across all corners of the roleplaying world.

Before we do that though, i think its worth giving as shot at revitalizing the flow within local boundaries. Tournaments, gauntlets, battle royales? Fuck it. All we need is for all 'em ole fightans people from around here to gather up, bring their favorite characters and fight eachother in a series of barebones one-off duels. That's the romance of rp fighting - a bunch of chill dudes wailing on eachother with 'em fightan words with no other goal than to pursue the three pillars of RP fightans:

1. Win
2. Do some real cool shit
3. Keep a good rep

Show 'em that we still got it and we're golden. If not growth, this will at least serve the purpose of congealing the current members of the community - which might just be all we need.

My two cents as god of everything.

@Mobius I know Rilla told people to halt, but after reading over it with you and Ink, you've gone a bit too far dude. If you have a problem with someone, PM them. And there is a difference between discussing something and concentrating on an actual post, the latter takes more effort and editing. You have a warning, atm.

So again, to stay completely transparent, I haven't really read anything since the last time I posted in here. I just noticed that things stopped progressing.

@Rilla Out of curiosity, as the admin, after reading some of the various suggestions here, what do you think you'll be doing with the arena? If you need time to think and consider still, that's fine. I'm not a guild regular, and won't be here forever, but as someone who will be here for the time being, I'm interested in your thoughts. Just tell us what you found as good ideas, if there were any.

They only want to argue.

I should really get to posting that character for my fight.

I'm inclined to agree. I even proposed a constructive manner in which to begin making legitimate progress on potential revisions/changes and such has gone largely ignored. So I can only assume people were never actually interested in doing something worthwhile.

@Dias Blade I think the problem we have right now is that even if we were to agree on a course of action, no one would be able to follow through with it. I'm running 2 RPs, and I doubt I could host a contest at the same time. Everyone else seems too busy as well. Reforming the PVP point system would be fine, but we'd need Mahz to code that in. So basically it's unlikely going to happen.

So all that's really left to do is participate in fights and hope activity goes up. Thing is, I'm not really interested in doing a fight where the characters can bench press small cars, outrun the worlds fastest mammals, and have powers that are on anime meme levels of absurdity. Even if I found a fight that looked good, I still might not participate if I think I'm not going to get along with my opponent.

So I'm just gunna keep being quiet until I see something that interests me.

Oh, and there's a writing contest going on.

EDIT: I should note that there's noting wrong with people who enjoy those types of fights. They're just not my style, heh.

To be fair, I would assume it be up to the forum staff to manage such things. There were a few comments previously where it was basically amounting to telling normal forum members to be the ones to perform the logistical and administrative procedures. At all the places I've been either a Mod or Admin, that wasn't how things worked. The community was free to present feedback on things and if there was a strong enough push for something, myself and the others would take said ideas, write them up in a formal sense and then present the draft back to the community for a vote. But aside from that, the staff were the only ones expected to do the work because that was our job.

Infrastructure is the most important thing, that's the system you invent to manage the community to relieve your own work load the more streamlined you make it.

In regards to what you said about finding a suitable fight in the Arena for yourself, you could just start up a thread for it and in the OOC include your own list of Character Limits/Requirements so that you can narrow down the sort of battle experience you're interested in having for whatever suits you and your play style the most.

I've gained the inspiration I need to get my character ready for my fight. He's the best friend in my main trio of characters for one of my settings where it's kung fu style with magical weapons inspired by animals (technically monsters but they themselves are inspired by real world animals). His weapon is inspired by the pangolin. Should give him a unique fighting style with his gauntlets that can turn into protective sheets. Relatively fire resistant sheets. Should come in handy for our fight. XD

@Dias Blade I hear ya about the mod related stuff, but the only people who can do any of the heavy lifting code stuff is Mahz. It's like inkarnate says, we really are a community that supports itself. There are some pretty good perks that come from that, but also some nasty cons.

Once I get done with this writing contest (both submitting an entry and voting), I'll have to put up a thread sometime. I've also gotta make some arena characters too I guess. so it might be a bit. Hue hue.

Working on a new Multiverse Arena, gonna throw out a post to get any responses I can get. Anyone who's still poking around the wasteland that is the Arena Subforum, ping me if you're interested. Anyone familiar with the Nexus of Worlds should find it refreshing, as I'm working on making it a suitable successor to the NoW.

1: Your ranks mean jack shit. There's no value to those records. Step One is doing a hard reset on all player scores. You want change? It starts there. Next, ACTUALLY HAVE LEGIT RANKS... What you have is just a stupid Leaderboard. What you want to do is have actual established "Ranks" that have requirements for each the higher you go that progressively get more difficult. Back in the community where I started, we had a pretty clear cut system in place.
-E Rank; Entry Level, everyone starts at the bottom.
-D Rank; Acquire 5 Wins using a Martial Archetype Character. (What you would know around here as RM, I believe?)
-C Rank; Acquire 10 Wins using a Tech Archetype Character. (Whether real world technology or sci-fi technology)
-B Rank; Acquire 10 Wins using a Magic Archetype Character. (Anything Fantasy based)
-A Rank; Acquire 20 Wins using a Hybrid Archetype Character (Mix at least 2 of the 3 Basic Archetypes in one character) in ADDITION to completing a Level Up Exam administered by an Arena Mod. (The Level Up Exam is meant to test your Problem Solving Skills, Combat Tactics and how Creative you are)
-S Rank; Granted the Title of "ACER" for completing this challenge, the only requirement necessary is for you to actually defeat a Team of A Ranked Fighters. (3 Person Squad)

There will be a list of pre-made Battlegrounds for each Rank. Players can ONLY participate in the Battlegrounds listed for their Rank or below. A Rank Battlegrounds will include special conditions, environmental hazards, Hostile NPCs that can randomly be controlled by an Arena Mod at any time during the fight along with other potential gimmicks to further encourage creative approach to challenging situations.

IN ADDITION, if you LOSE a fight, your score suffers. Yes, there is a damn good reason for that. It discourages you from simply quitting a fight and provides legitimate risk involved for losing. Once you manage to hit a milestone and Rank up, though, you can't be DROPPED a Rank. Your score also doesn't go into the negatives, it just stays at 0.

I'm late to the party as always... Chiming on this because it piqued my curiosity while I was scrolling through the weeks of headbutting.

What exactly invalidates a leaderboard format for establishing a ranking? It more or less functions the arena in a similar capacity to other competitive atmospheres. Though, I'd even go so far as to say that a ranking set should simply be gleaned from a recorded log of everyone's win-draw-loss numbers, and disregard the concrete 'score.' Or at least use something in the difference between the number of wins and losses to yield a more definite number (8 Wins against 2 Losses = Net Score of 6). Of course, stalemates could throw that number for a loop, though maybe those sorts of battles just serve to leave the combatants stagnant and wouldn't get factored in the final score... bleh, I think I'm rambling there. I just don't see the 'flaw' inherent in that sort of way of going about it.

Does your proposed E-S ranking involve barring competitors from using certain character builds (in ranking context) until they've achieved the adequate ranking for them? IE, and E-Rank fighter can only use grassroots, melee characters until reaching D-Rank, at which point they can use characters with tech as they pursue the C-Rank? Or would everyone be able to pursue each Rank designation at their own desired pace, thus making the Ranks more comparable to achievements?

Other point... I've never agreed with the practice of dropping a person's 'score' from a loss. That enforces that a loss invalidates a prior victory. Given the mechanism of ranking up that you've outlined, is exactly what would appear to happen: a loss removes a win; there's literally NO other competitive (thinking even professional level sports) in which losing a match or a game results in a person or team's victory/victories being taken away. Plus, in a system like yours, it seems like being stagnant in a rank through constant losses would be motivation enough to get a person to either remove themselves from the formal competition, or buckle down, grit their teeth and just get better at battling.

For the record, I do believe that the most recent ranking system here DID in fact dock points from combatants for losing their matches. Someone can correct me on that if I'm wrong.

They've just been fighting a whole bunch, mainly. I'd be more active on here if it weren't for school, and some other roleplays, like I'm kind of maining the the superheroe roleplay board atm, and I can't really fight in the arena. from the looks of it, however, it looks like I shouldn't do that anyway, since its been like a month, and everyone is still bickering about change and whatnot.
