Let me tell you, squire. The difference between man and beast is paper thin. Sometimes, rules is what separates us from them. And that's why you're going to be whipped twenty times.

Von Lilen tensed, his muscles springing into action from his stupor. The man named Finlay had taken all of them to their barracks. He was going to share his cot with another fellow and a woman. A far shot from his knighting days. Yet, for all the speeches, and the instructions, it was like being a squire over and over again. The spirits and bodies would be broken and rebuilt anew. With a new fresh purpose.

And like every other training camp, it would have no lack of visionaries. Naive intentions who sown the seeds of unrest and lack of discipline. It was said that if the leaders of an army did not pay attention to the signs, unity would crumble. The knight grunted slightly and imperceptible, as soon as the stupid, foolish woman began her spiel. Really, who did She think she was? Some sort of Messiah? Soon others followed.

And with that the sharp and hars scrape of the metal against the scabbard, as Gottfried sprung into action, his blade drawn. It did not matter she was a werewolf. It did not matter there were other heathens, bloodsuckers and feral beasts amidst the sorry lot. He was determined. With speed and decision, his blade stopped a hair's breadth from drawing blood on Brighid's throat.

"Unathorized use of magic. Conspiring to break free with other prisoners. I ought to cut you where you stand, woman. And those who follow suit. But it's not my decision,as we've been told. Orders?" He asked, his gaze briefly pointing at Finlay's head.

Edwin, unfortunately, did not manage to speak with the pale man again - He never spoke up to respond to the young man, and Edwin was seriously hoping that his attention to the three figures had been seen as rude. Still, it was hard to be upset when he was being talked to by the Blanchette Rouge! The stomp that precluded her speech was familiar in its extreme force - Uncle Jason's familiar had a similar tendency of accidentally making incredibly loud noises, so Edwin jumped a lot less than many of his fellow initiates. Ms. Rouge went on to clearly and consciously explain the fundamentals of the Red Hoods, as well as how the Initiates will progress in status. Ms. Rouge was such a good public speaker - Edwin nearly screamed when she got close enough for him to reach out to her! He didn't though, screaming would be really rude.

The fact that Ms. Rogue said that they wanted to tame monsters was especially relieving - That was what Edwin's magic was all about, after all! Still, the look that she gave the older pale man was a bit concerning. Maybe she didn't like that he was so heavily armored, even though he was a recruit? If that was the case, Edwin was glad she hadn't seen his Dagger - that was Edwin's most prized possession, and he really didn't want her to not like him because he had a weapon to start out with. By the time she finished her speech, Chamos had crawled back onto Edwin's sleeve, and the young man began to follow the crowd of initiates towards their future living quarters.

Mr. Dougal was such an interesting man! Apparently, he was in charge of the initiates who were forced to be here if what Edwin's guard said was true, and Ms. Rouge trusted him enough to have him lead the future Yellow Hoods. If he ever got the extra time, Edwin thought that asking him how he got that scar would lead to an amazing story! Unfortunately, he would have to wait to ask, as one of his fellow initiates began to give a speech to her companions - it was fun until she started using magic to release people. Didn't she hear Mr. Dougal when he said to 'do what he says and there wouldn't be a problem?' And the kind guard that led Edwin here seemed quite sure that you were supposed to keep the shackles on until an official removed them. She seemed fairly knowledgeable about the supernatural - other than the fact that she mistook Edwin for a summoner! Summoning and Binding were complimentary schools of magic, but Edwin was raised to be the Binder for his Cabal - His father was already the Summoner!

When she released his shackles, Edwin quickly put them back on, not allowing her to grab them - He appreciated her thinking about his comfort, but the last thing he wanted to do was be on Mr. Dougal's bad side. He'd have to thank her in private later... Maybe during the trial!

'Are you a fahckin idiot, kid?! That was a good chance to get out of these shits and ya blew it! Am I lyin!?'

'Sorry Chamos, but I don't think Mr. Dougal would be happy about us walking around without the chains they graciously gave us...'

Edwin chose to ignore the string of swears that followed since his Dad said swearing was icky and bad. Instead, he focused on everyone introducing themselves! Ms. Eliza seemed like a very nice lady! She was whispering with Ms. O'Shay, so they seemed to be close - maybe they were friends! That would make bonding much easier. Both her and Ms. O'shay being spellcasters was a comforting sight, and it helped ease the sense of homesickness that Edwin was feeling since he left.

Mr. Whitlock seemed nice if a bit Prudent. That was a good thing, Edwin's mom taught him what that word meant a few weeks ago! Edwin really hoped that the man's urgency to get to his room wasn't because he wanted to ignore them - Edwin wanted to get to know everyone over a warm bowl of porridge and he didn't want Mr. Whitlock to think they all can't be friends.

Mr. Dragomir, on the other hand, was a bit darker than Edwin initially thought when he bumped into him. Edwin blushed a little when he realized that Mr. Dragomir was staring at Ms. Eliza. Edwin agreed that she was a pretty lady, but didn't they just meet? T-that was a little l-lewd...

Mr. Fendral seemed very honest! Although Edwin would need to ask what he meant by rumors - Edwin was a bit unknowledgeable about the outside world, so the boy didn't really know much about anyone's families other than his own. Still, Mr. Fendral seemed a bit too young to have white hair - Uncle Jason had salt-and-pepper hair, and he was 46! At the very least, Edwin wasn't alone in the desire to follow orders, as Mr. Fendral also wanted to be rechained.

Edwin released a brief sound of fear and surprise when he saw the Brown-haired man pointing an arrow at Mr. Dragomir. What the hel- HECK. What the heck was this man doing!? Mr. Dragmir didn't do anything wrong! Unless... Did this man have his eye on Ms. Eliza, and was upset when Mr. Dragomir was staring at her? That was NO excuse to threaten him with an arrow! Moving as quickly as he could, Edwin tackled into Mr. Dragomir, attempting to knock him to the floor.

Of course, it did nothing. Mr. Dragomir probably had a solid 100 pounds over Edwin, and he was in full plate armor. Still, Edwin flipped around and used his body to try and block the path of the arrow to Mr. Dragomir's body.

"P-please don't fight! Can't we all be friends?!"

Almost instantly after he asked that, the other man wearing plate armor pulled out his sword and held it to Ms. O'Shay's neck! WHAT THE FU- Frick. What the frick!? It was a good sign that he was listening to Mr. Dougal, but that was still no reason to nearly cut off a woman's head! Women are supposed to be treated delicately, so the fact that the Armored man was so eager to assault her was a bit uncouth!

Edwin wouldn't be able to stop both the Archer and the Armored man at the same time, without putting Chamos at risk of being squashed, so he simply stood in his position directly in front of Mr. Dragomir and prayed that Mr. Dougal would stop this.

Vitius Dragomir

Location: Red Hood Keep | Sleeping Quarter's

Interactions: Everyone

Mentions: @Duoya, @NorthernKraken

Vitius cautiously watched from the shadows as the brown haired man pulled out his bow, aimed it at his head, knocked an arrow, and drew the bowstring back. He could feel his hand moving towards the empty space on his belt where the sheathe for his sword would have been had he not been disarmed upon being captured. Vitius let out a tense and barely audible growl as he readied himself for the man's attack, only just noticing the small figure, a boy it looked like, standing in front of him.

Was this person actually trying to defend him from being attacked? No, it couldn't be. No one trusted or cared about undead like him, or at least that was what he'd thought before this boy had decided to stand between him and his second death. Shaking his head, Vitius gently moved the boy out of the way of the man's arrow and stood in front of him. Looking back at the kid, whom he assumed was a spellcaster of some kind due to his strange clothing, Vitius calmly said: "There's no need for you to go risking your life for someone you hardly know kid, though I do admire your resolve."

With that taken care of, Vitius turned his attention back to his attacker. "Listen." He said, his eyes narrowing into slits. "I don't know what your problem with me is or what kind of fucked up shit you may have gone through in the past, but I'd prefer it if you didn't try to murder me or anyone else in this room." He warned, his body tensing up even more as he saw the somewhat crazed and distant look in the man's eyes. Vitius wasn't sure how all of this would play out now, especially given his companions most recent actions, but he wasn't about to be caught off guard.

"Hi." Despite how relaxed the voice sounded, Loona still tensed, spinning around and moving back just as the owner of the voice in question did the same. Tiny hands immediately moved to her hourglass necklace, big green eyes scanning over the man in front of her. Short brown hair that was a bit longer at the top than the sides, similar colored eyes, and fair skin. He clearly looked prepared for what he was getting himself into...he looked like he had experience unlike herself, who was dressed in not so protective pinks, greens, and browns. Just what did he want exactly? Was he trying to be nice? Or maybe he wanted something from her? The thought crossed Loona’s mind to just ignore the man, but seeing as it didn’t look like he wanted to cause her any harm, she decided to humor him.

“H-Hello…” She murmured, a cautious smile pulling at her lips before turning lopsided from the tilt of her head at what came after.
”First time?” What did he mean by that? First time being in such a place? First time in a violent setting? First time talking to someone that wasn’t her kind? The fairly board question had the girl a bit stunned.
“I g-guess?” Looking down at herself after speaking up, it only took a few seconds for her to realize where she decided to place herself into the crowd. “O-Oh, I’m sorry! Am I blocking your view? I d-didn’t mean to, promise.” It was definitely a different feeling having to worry about where she was, especially since everyone was so much bigger than her. It was never a problem back home, so this was just something she’s have to live with.

Presenting her with a slight smile, the man spoke up, probably sensing her uneasiness about...well, everything.
“It’s quite alright. I was just…” He was staring at her much like she was to him. “...Did you volunteer?” The fairy felt her face begin to warm up, one hand dropping to her side, and the other sliding over to clutch the other arm behind her.
“Yes. Is...i-is it obvious?” She questioned, now floating a bit closer to the other’s face. “I’m not really use to being outside of my home and around so many humans and the like so…” Loona then trailed off mid-sentence since she could feel herself begin to ramble.
"Well... considering you volunteered for this..." He started, folding his arms over his chest before gesturing the other initiates with his head. "...You're either crazy... or you must be damn good with that toothpick."
“I-I’m not crazy, and this is not a toothpick!” She said suddenly, waving her arms around a bit while gesturing to the slim sword to prove her point. Of course she didn’t want to admit that neither of the two conditions applied to her, however the thought that she really wasn’t prepared for this made her pout a bit, only perking up when the other spoke again.
"May I ask the brave soul what brings her here?"

Great, another loaded question, except this time she knew exactly what her reasons were for coming here. Her initial thoughts revolved around if she even needed to tell this man her reasons, that is, until it dawned on her that that alone was the only merit she had to prove that she belonged here. Without her reasons, she'd be useless. And the more people know, the better, even if it wouldn't make a difference. That didn't mean she wasn't going make this easy for the curious man.

“Y-You can just call me Loona. Loona Celestina.” She began with a small smile before continuing. “I want to become a Red Hood to bring awareness to my kind and those who weren’t h-helped by the Red Hoods. Loona then mumbled out before balling her fists. "I’m not the b-best fighter, but I can patch up wounds and stuff like that. H-hopefully that’s useful in a place like this..." Even without any context or even names from the other initiates, Loona scraped harshly below the bottom of the barrel when it came to any form of fight be it physical or verbal. She could learn, definitely, but she'd have to learn quickly or else this would all be in vain. Luckily, she was already making connections, albeit just one at the moment, and judging by how calm and relaxed he looked to be in the keep, Loona felt like he could rely on the man despite only just meeting. "But, what about you Mister? You volunteered as well, right?”

“Aye. Volunteered. Although it didn't really feel like a choice and the 'why' is less noble than your own. Call it..." Loona tilted her head as the other looked away, lips pursed as if deep in thought. "...Selfish motivation.” Selfish motivation? What could he mean by that? Of course it could be a myriad of things condensed into two easy to understand words, but it was a bit hard to believe especially with how she wouldn't even be talking to him if it hadn't been him starting the conversation in the first place... "Loona." Before she had a chance to dwell on it any further, her name coming from a more unfamiliar voice had her straighten, sharp green eyes unconsciously studying the other person's face in the process. "It's nice. I like it. I'm Nicholas but you can call me Nic-... How does one greet the Fae, Loona?"

To say she was surprised when the other asked how fairies greet others was an understatement. Who knew humans could be so nice? ...He was human...right? The emerald eyed fairy looked down when she saw something move, it being the man's, who had a rather foreign but pleasant name in her opinion, hand presumably reaching out for a handshake of some kind before looking back up to meet his brown hued eyes.
"Oh, th-thank you!" Loona started a bit flustered before smiling. "And thanks for asking too. For those bigger than us, I've been told that we normally shake the other's finger or an appendage with a little dust. Here." And with that, Loona hovered down towards Nicholas' hand before grabbing his index finger and pulling it up and towards her as if to simulate a proper handshake. She then grabbed her necklace with one hand and shook it around a bit, coating the tiny digits and palm with her own silvery substance. Now using both of her hands, Loona shook Nicholas' finger vertically with a good portion of her might before letting out a sigh. The struggles of being so small were truly vast... "It's nice to meet you, Nick!"

Unfortunately, Nick wasn't given the chance to respond right away, the moment not lasting as long as Loona would have liked it. Shock washed over the fairy’s features as she turned back to look at the three imposing figures in front of the crowd of initiates; this time, she made sure she wasn’t blocking anyone else’s view of the trio that would probably be giving them some very important information, now positioning herself beside Nicholas’ head. Despite being in the air, and not having to feel anything that came from the cloaked man in the front, the noise alone was enough to make her look over, hands involuntarily shaking at the thought of what was in store.

As the woman, Commander Rogue was her name, began to lecture and make her feel smaller than she already was, Loona’s attention shifted back to the Red Hoods watching from the sides. They had to start from the bottom as well, right? Which could only mean that they were the ones that persevered and managed to prove their strength, prove their usefulness to the group. Something she very desperately needed to do herself. Would they be able to teach someone like her? Would she be able to handle being around other species for the first time in her life? Loona could only hope. So far she thought she was doing alright.

Now following the Red Hood that went by Finlay, everyone was being separated into different rooms. She hoped that Nick’s last name was either of the two that were called along with her’s, but seeing as he didn’t say anything on the matter, it was probably safe to say that they were in different rooms...great. Speaking of Nicholas, Loona’s attention was soon brought back to him, her fairy dust clinging loosely onto the appendages that it coated; a few specks even found their way into the air, heading towards the ground. "Thank you." Loona was quickly brought back to before the Commander lectured them as Nicholas smiled.
“O-Oh, you’re welcome.” Loona returned the smile with one of her own, hands now clasped loosely in front of her as the other was quick to continue the conversation.
"Curious to know though... that's not just for 'shaking hands' is it?" Following his dark gaze to her necklace, Loona gave him a knowing nod. She was a bit worried about anyone looking at her necklace since it was very important to her, but she'd have to explain herself soon or later. Might as well do it with someone she's familiar with first.
“Right, fairy dust is normally used for healing wounds and replenishing stamina. With enough of it, I can make inanimate objects shrink or grow too. B-But don’t worry, what I did should be harmless.” She responded quickly with a smile before looking at the different rooms. “I guess we’re in different rooms, huh.” Loona continued, her words coming out more as a statement then a question. Regardless, Nick gave a short nod in response.
"That we are. But don't worry. I'd wager you might be the only one who actually belongs given what you can do. Stunned to hear something so straightforward, especially about something she was nowhere near confident in, the fairy almost missed what the other said afterwards. They hand only just met a few minutes prior but was confident enough to say she really belong in such a cutthroat place? "So trust me when I say, I'll be sticking close to you when I can. I'm not likely to find another face as kind as yours. Plus... you might need someone with a longer sword to watch your back." A sly grin pulled at the fair man's lips. "Loona. Pleas-"

An unfamiliar voice followed by what sounded like chains clicking open reverberated around the hall, effectively making Loona and Nicholas' private conversation null. The fairy could only watch as the owner of said voice proceeded to free every shackled being she could before introducing herself. By that point, Loona had already found refuge in Nick's collar, brows furrowed as the situation couldn't get any worse, right? Flinching when the woman, Brighid she called herself, acknowledged her presence, Loona could only watch with now nervous emerald eyes as everything effectively went to shit.

Introductions were made, words were said, and weapons were drawn in a matter of minutes. And they were suppose to work together? She could definitely see those trying to prevent anymore chaos, but it seem to all be in vain. Knowing she couldn't do anything simply because of her stature ad nature in general, Loona tugged on the collar she had unconsciously latched onto.
"Th-They really need to stop...th-this isn't the place for it..." She frowned. "D-Do you think m-maybe you can do something to c-calm them down?" She then asked with an anxious tilt of the head.

Amid the sudden chaos, frenzied voices and the sharp song of unsheathed steel, Nick became distinctly aware of Loona tucking herself in between the skin of his neck and fabric of his jacket. There was an ounce of warmth and pressure where she had hid herself and the soft of her voice cut through the commotion in the hall with ease. Her distress was clear as day and her concern valid. Still, there wasn't much to be done. He shook his head.

"No... Not really." He replied simply. He'd thought about it. Counted the heads as soon as they started moving. Noted the pull on the bow to the left of the room, the arrow centered on the white haired male who'd just been ousted as a vampire. His aggressor staring him down with a look of determination not like to be easily broken. Noted the steel clad knight with blade brandished between himself and the red haired women. The fair lady who'd proclaimed herself a werewolf. A fair lady with a penchant for the arcane judging by the incantation she'd let slip from her lips and how every shackle she'd touched did the same. A gesture of kindness and the second he'd witnessed in the keep as well as telling of another layer beyond the one made obvious by her confession. But alas, it was a difficult thing for some people to believe that a human and a monster could be one and the same. Separate. That was always easier. Separate was also simpler. Unfortunately, simple and easy wasn't afforded to them any longer... and this would be the first of many growth pains. It had to run his course and if someone were to stop it, it wasn't Nick. He held no authority here and whatever skill he thought he might have... "Not much I can do. This is just how some greet one another. It's a little different from your handshake."

At this point it was all about picking his battles as well as getting the measure of the men and women next to him. Who buckled under pressure? Who bent the rules? Who believed in what? And how far was someone willing to go for those beliefs. Could he trust a man to not cut down one of their own solely for personal gain? And if he couldn't, did he really want to have to rely on him? Could he rely on himself when the time came?

...Who the fuck knows...?

Could they rely on him? Would they if they knew?

There had been a bit of a tremble in Loona's voice and Nick immediately made connections he wasn't entirely sure he had to make. She wasn't human either and he had to wonder how the other two felt about it. Would they resolve to cut her down as well? On instinct he'd checked his gear. Three swords strapped to his back, two more than he was used to carrying on his person. The others were extra and he'd carried them all in with the intent to stow the rest. The added weight was throwing him off. Way off. There was also the dagger strapped to the back of his waist and a fourth arm hidden beneath the folds of his outerwear. He gripped the latter two and kept his eyes open for any sudden movement made toward himself.

"Just stay put and we'll see how Finlay and the rest of the Hoods handle it." His eyes flicked over to the commander who was watching everything unfold.

Finlay found himself carrying an arms load of shackles as he watched, dumbfounded, at the conversations taking place in front of him. "Huh" He huffed as he shook his head violently, exuding as much effort as he could to try and comprehend what he was seeing. Confusion grew to incredulousness, which grew further to frustration.

"Listen fookin 'ere!" he shouted, his teapot finally coming to a steam. He threw the shackles at Colin , his upper lip baring his teeth as he watched the metal fly. His jaw dropped in a snarl, his lower teeth in full display as he stormed into the center of the muck. "I don't know where the fook you think you are, but if there is any confusion, allow me to clarify.

Finlay stormed up to Gottfried and grabbed his blade, forcibly removing it from Brighid's neck, his own blood trailing down the wrinkles of his palm as he audibly growled at the knight, pushing the sword away.

"You're in the heart of the nightmare dreamt by the devil himself. You're surrounded by those filtered out from the weak, hand chosen to oppose the spawn of evil. If you think, any one of you, that those shackles were to protect us from you, then you still don't understand the world you've just stepped into. Those were for your protection. Those were to make sure you didn't piss us off. Those were to make sure you survived." Finlay looked back at the chains, grimacing, before facing the lot again.

He cleared his throat and regained his composure. "That said, impressive work. Adaptability, execution. Your wits are invaluable, your allies even moreso. If you're going to dine with me tonight, you've got to realize that the people around you are your only hope of survival, whether you like them or not. If you see tomorrow, it will be because someone in these rooms made that happen. Look around and realize that you've just been introduced to yer best fookin friends." Finlay began to pace as he barked. "You jobby faced idiots are under my watch now which means your success is my success. Your failure is my failure. Let me tell ya, kiddos." Finlnay leaned in and whispered very loud. "I don't fail."

Straightening up, Finlay scanned each face with a look of disgust, pausing to take in each pair of eyes. "The next bit is a doozy. Blood is guaranteed to spill. If any of ya think you can do this alone, I've got some like-minded friends I wanna introduce ya to. Gonna need a shovel, though." He gave each one a leering glance before turning his back on the lot. "And if any of you dobbers ever hand something to me without me asking for it, I'll mount yer fookin head on my mantle." He started striding off and took a turn down a different corridor. "15 minutes" came his voice echoing down the stone hallway as he took his leave.

Vitius let out a small, amused, chuckle as he looked about the now silent room. Just as quickly as things had escalated, they'd been ended. And to think that all it had taken was one rant from a very pissed off man. Sighing, he stepped into the center of the room whilst simultaneously pulling his hood down over his face to keep out light.

"Look at us." Vitius said, shaking his head in disdain. "We've only been here for a couple of minutes and we're already trying to kill each other." Scoffing, Vitius looked at each of his companions in turn before walking off to a bunk on the far end of the room and sitting down. Lifting his head, Vitius once again looked at the others in the room. This was his group. This conflicting mess of opposing views, opinions, and beliefs was what he would be working with for the rest of his time here.

Which Vitius realized, with a shudder, would be forever. Or at least until the others died off from either old age or were felled in battle. Letting out another sigh, Vitius allowed himself to fall backwards into his bunk, which wasn't very comfortable, and stared up at the bed above him, his mind lost in thought.

Some Time Ago
The Minced Maiden, Sinstead

Andi was no stranger to the time and effort that went into battling personal demons, but this was getting ridiculous. The boy had barely been up and about a week, and already most of that had been spent huddled in some corner or another - shaking and staring into the middle distance. And like hell was it her fault - as Healer Benson with his mystic tones and goo-goo eyes had not so much implied as ‘smashed her over the head with’ when he said to just ‘try a little harder’.

What a prick.

The fuck did he know, anyway? What was he expecting - a heart to heart? Deep personal revelations of the kind seen in the players’ Saturday evening performances? The kid wasn’t even giving her a name, never mind a confessional. She scowled, dried damp, calloused hands on the grubby dish rag strung over her belt, and marched over to the shuddering heap of a child that had taken residence in her kitchen.

“Right,” she said, tone sharp, “Enough of that. I won’t have layabouts under my roof. You’re to get to work if you’ve any plans of staying.” she stood for a moment, hands perched squarely on her hips. The boy blinked. Looked up at her. It was more of a reaction than she’d gotten in weeks. Huh.

A little flustered at the sudden communication, she continued on, “Well... there’s tankards out front that want collecting, dishes that want washing, and a floor that needs a good sweeping,” best not to set the patrons on the poor lad just yet, “you’ll be paid a coin an hour for any work you do - normally it’d be two, but you’re already getting room and board - any more and I’d be shut down. Sound alright to you?”

A small nod, and that was that.

Present Day
The Red Hoods' Keep - Hallway

Colin

A moment. The feeling like his chest might explode. Two exits, not counting the door leading to rooms with windows and a fifty foot drop. Behind them were the hoods.

Never there when you needed them.

They were on their own.

The others needed to run – why weren’t they running? Why did none of these people know how to fucking run?

A boy – all bright colours and billowing fabrics, barrelled into the creature out of nowhere.

Shit.

Wanted to look away. Couldn’t. Ready, to hear the ripping, shredding, choking –

"P-please don't fight! Can't we all be friends?!"
And then –

"There's no need for you to go risking your life for someone you hardly know kid, though I do admire your resolve."

Dull surprise

And then its eyes were on him.

Some speech that he only half heard –

It was trying to play nice. Did it really think it could fool him? The others needed to run. Whilst it was distracted. Before this got messy.

“Do you think I’m bloody stupid or something?” His voice again, “that might work on the fucking kids you tear to pieces for a laugh, but it’s not working on me!"

A distant aching, burning sensation in his arms. He was getting tired.

"Listen fookin 'ere!"

A clanking, grating sound – a flash of silver in the corner of his eye.

He ducked, hit the floor arse-first.

The arrow loosed.

Thunk!

Harmlessly into the ceiling where it wobbled for a few seconds, then, quietly, stilled.

About to pull another one from his quiver, he caught the man- Finlay’s- eye.

Oh shit.

Lips pulled back to bare flat, grey teeth – face contorted and twisting into an almost feral snarl. Almost. Colin watched, nerves tingling, as first, he grabbed a sword, held to the woman with the red hair’s throat by a large, armoured figure, with his bare hand. Blood dripped… but… nothing more.

What he’d been expecting, Colin didn’t know.

And then, a speech. Pacing. Shouting. Whisper-shouting, a few specks of spittle flying from the man’s mouth as he tore them all a new one. Dread hollowed a pit in Colin’s stomach as he let it wash over him – the words not important. The message was clear.

He’d messed up.

When the man was done, he left. Crisp, cool silence hung in his wake.

A ship, with no wind in its sails.

Colin stayed where he was for a moment. The pile of what he now realised were the shackles that had formerly ensconced the wrists of the others prior to – that still beside him. His arrow, still embedded in the ceiling above him.

His right hand grasped at the stone wall for support as he slowly pulled himself to his feet. He could still feel the slight tremble in his limbs, the familiar light, heady feeling that made him feel like he was about to tip over. The remaining tendrils of pure, unadulterated terror still grasped onto his racing heart as the realisation that breathing was a thing he should probably be doing right now crept up on him.

What had he been playing at? Of course they were safe here. Of course. Unshackled leech hanging about the place or not – there were uncountable highly trained, battle hardened warriors right down the hall. They did this for a living. Colin had seen them do this for a living, more than once. He was here to learn how take down bloodsuckers in his sleep. What use was a hunter afraid of the very thing they hunted? He wasn’t a child anymore. He couldn’t go round, jumping at shadows, holding a knife to the throat of anything that went bump in the night. Red hoods didn’t attack the first thing they saw that looked vaguely vampiric, they didn’t point a weapon and not even realise they were doing it, they didn’t fucking… whatever it was he did.

He was such. A fucking. Idiot.

He looked around. Wondered how he must look to the others. Decided he didn’t want to know. At some point, the leech had left. Good.

He let go of the wall, let his head hand, refusing to make any further eye contact, to say anything more. He picked his way across the room, retreated into the room Finlay had pointed out earlier.

If they had fifteen minutes, he was going to spend it alone.

He dumped his bag on the bunk furthest from the door, with a full view of the room, and flexed his aching shoulders, before sitting heavily, head in his hands, trying to remember why he was even here in the first place.

Eliza

To her left, Colin had Nessy drawn taut. Fletching was held precariously between his fingers, and though his arm was strong and steady, he was visibly shaken. The wicked tip of his arrow was only a few feet away from the male vampire, Vitius. The one who had gifted her with a cold, dead glare minutes ago. Eliza wanted to shout, plead with Colin to lower his weapon. However, she knew it would be pointless. In fact, frightening him would likely cause him to release the arrow and send it sailing into Vitius’ chest. She averted her eyes, not wanting to see what would happen next.

Looking to her right, she laid eyes upon a scene that made her heart falter. A man was blocking Brighid's slight frame, but the glint of steel was evident from where Eliza stood. Her dear friend Brighid was being held at swordpoint. Brighid, who had devoted her life to healing the sick and injured, was a hair's breadth away from being slaughtered where she stood. Eliza had so many questions for the girl, starting with what had happened during the month she had been gone. She wanted to be by her friend's side in their later years, bickering and laughing. She yearned to learn alongside her. Brighid simply couldn't die. Not here, in such a pitiful way. She deserved to go out in a blaze of glory, or peacefully in her sleep after a long, happy life.

With a snarl, Eliza raised her hand, the words to an intricate spell on the tip of her tongue. She had never attempted it before, so it would likely fizzle out. A sudden dark throbbing in her chest demanded that she had to try. She had to harm this man, to save her friend. The first word to the spell was out of her mouth when she heard the shout -Finlay's shout. Shortly after that, the flash of chains in her periphery. The thunk of an arrow as it pierced wood, not flesh.

She paused, and in that moment of hesitation she realized exactly what she was doing. She drew back her hand, clutching her chest. What had she been thinking? She wasn't one for hexes. Her spells were all about improvement, protection. When she had to defend herself, she used the elements. Yet, she had been words away from harming a human.

Eliza turned to Finlay, wincing as he barked at them. When he fixed his gaze on her, she had to fight the urge to shrink down. She looked around the room, at everyone that she was supposed to be working with, at Finlay, their keeper. Vitius was making a curt statement in the center of the room, but she wholeheartedly ignored it. They didn't need a lecture, they needed motivation. Something that would push them to work together.

She saw Colin stumbling to his feet, his head hung, shame evident in his features. Turning between him and Brighid, she gave her old friend a weak smile and padded off after her new acquaintance. After all, Brighid had been the cause of all of this, whereas Colin had simply been a victim. He had succumbed to his fear, something they were all guilty of at one point or another.

The Red Hoods' Keep - Gottfried, Loona, and Colin's room

All

She watched from the doorway as Colin held his head in his hands, slowly walking forwards. She cleared her throat when she was directly in front of him, before placing a hand on his good shoulder. She ran her thumb over it, feeling how tense he was through his clothing. Giving him a slight squeeze, she removed her hand and took a seat next to him on the bed.

“I know you probably want to be alone, but…” She trailed off, unsure of how to finish the sentence. She had never had to comfort a man. It didn't make Colin any less of a man, though. In fact, it made him more approachable in her eyes. She paused for a few more moments, before finally finding something to say. “But I came anyways. What happened out there is the result of ten clashing personalities all in one room. You reacted, and no one can blame you for that. We were all a bit frightened.”

“Finlay's right though. We're all going to have to work together if we want to survive the night.” She grinned, something coming to mind. “At least, some of us will. We all know there will be a few people who think they're too good for teamwork.”

Colin looked up at the sound of someone clearing their throat. It was Eliza, because of course it was. She was the only one likely to go after the person who’d just freaked out for absolutely no reason.

At her touch, he flinched. Barely perceptible, but still there. He bit the inside of his cheek, looked down - away. What kind of person fucking flinched at something as benign as a hand on the shoulder? She was trying to be kind. Not that he deserved it. A soft squeeze, she let go and took a seat next to him, her frame so light she barely made a dint in the stiff mattress.

At her words, he looked up. Of course, of course she was saying it wasn’t his fault. Of course she was trying to make it better. She was a good person, a normal person.

He smiled a little at her jibe. He hadn’t… he hadn’t really gotten the chance to learn about the others, or hear their introductions in their entirety. At least, that’s what he assumed they’d been doing. Making introductions. Because that’s what most people did when they met those they’d have to be working with for the foreseeable future – monsters or not. But still, he’d noticed some of the more unusual characters in the room.

But still…

He took a breath, indelibly weary,
“I err… I probably shouldn’t be here – you know that right? I mean, I dunno what the hoods think about quitters, but… you saw what went on, I’m a liability. You lot might’ve been scared, but none of you… none of you…”
He exhaled sharply and stood. None of them panicked. None of them acted without even realising it. None of them took a stroll down memory lane and came out the other side with a bow pointed in someone else’s face- “The hoods don’t need that. They need people who’re reliable, and… I’m not.”

Gottfried had not moved significantly, not even during Finlay’s speech and boastful sword grabbing. Reluctantly, he had withdrawn and clean his blade after the senior’s tirade. The last thing the seasoned veteran had wanted was to pierce the flesh of the wrong person. His fists tightened, he had just overseen the situation.

First the vampire had decided to scoff at him and at the others. As if he had been the one to talk, first arrogantly deciding not to keep the chains and bolster the lack of discipline among their ranks. He resisted the temptation to quit. Be watchful, be silent, and keep the cards close to your chest. That was how to survive hell. Or war. Both were the one and same, despite what Finlay claimed. Shedding blood of monsters, shedding blood of armies. It all amounted to do the same.

The turmoil of feelings that many people got lost. He had been eyeing the other trooper, who emboldened by fear rather than indignation, had decided to take up arms against the vampire. He was now consoled by one of the spellcaster’s friends, it seemed? Seemingly to no avail, as he was in a self-deprecating mood.

He seemed a good archer, and better have a trustworthy arrow than another pompous heathen windbag emboldened by words of fake reassurance, so he drew closer.

“Do you think even our so called, overseer, Finlay is bereft of fault, archer?” Gottfried ventured to say. “He just grabbed a blade when a sharp word would have had the same effect. Point is, you live to see another day, and the gods have created the wits on men to learn from their mistakes.” He paused. “In any case, a bit late for lamentations.” He paused as he pondered. “But not for presentations. I am Gottfried Von Lilen. People used to call me ser, but Red Hoods have no need of knightly titles.”

Eliza had opened her mouth to gather a few words, in the hopes of drawing Colin out of his slump. Unfortunately, they were interrupted by a gruff voice. She peered up, gaze connecting with the face of the man who was speaking. Her eyes narrowed as she realized who he was. Though she had only seen the side of his face in the heat of the moment, after Finlay had reprimanded him she had managed to catch a glimpse of his visage. It was the man who had held Brighid at swordpoint. Apparently, he had been a Knight. What kind of knight would act the way he had, though?

“He grabbed a blade in his anger, the same way you stuck a sword to my friend’s throat in your anger.” Her eyes blazed, and she recalled the way her hand had went up without thought. The way the hex had almost left her lips. It had been her moment of weakness, she had danced on the edge of darkness. She cleared her throat, looking away to quelch the anger she felt. She wouldn’t allow herself to be overtaken.

Colin’s attention snapped to the man who’d just entered, disrupting the cyclone of thoughts whirling through his head momentarily. It was the figure in the armour, the one who’d held a sword to the woman’s throat – the woman who Eliza had been talking to earlier, in the hall, who’d released the others from the shackles.

His words though, a mistake – it hadn’t been a mistake, it had been stupidity, it had been-

The name, Von Lillen – roommates, apparently.

He glanced at Eliza, who looked… well, furious, to say the least. It wasn’t a look he’d been expecting to see on her, but apparently, she had a dark side. A dark side that she quickly staunched with little more than a moment to compose herself. He wasn’t sure if he should be impressed or concerned. Feelings like that didn’t just… disappear, even if you wanted them to, at least that’s what Andi always said.

Colin shifted and stepped backwards, until he felt the rough surface of the wall behind him, somewhat awkward. Unsure how to respond, but feeling like the situation could do with being diffused, he spoke up, “I’m err, my name’s Colin, nice to meet you,” he winced slightly, unsure how Eliza would feel about exchanging pleasantries with the man who’d just held a knife to her friend’s throat, but also wanting to be on good terms with the person he was apparently going to be sharing a room with, “– err, do I still call you Ser if you’re not one anymore?”

Gottfried looked at Colin. Good, he seemed to reply. He didn’t even spare a single glance towards the woman or her rants. What would she know of reading situations? She had been flailing not five minutes before he had sprung into action, finding the same situation bizarre. “Just call me Gottfried. It’s befitting for being comrades in arms. An interesting weapon of choice, if I must say. Just keep your wits. These aren’t your ghosts of the past.” The knight curtly said, as he coughed slightly. “I’ve seen men destroyed by their own inner demons. It’s not a pretty sight.”

Eliza wasn’t surprised that the man ignored her. He had been rude -vile even- towards Brighid, so why would he spare her a glance when she put in her two cents? But just because she accepted it, didn't mean it wasn't annoying. She forced her palms to stay flat against her sides, preventing herself from balling them into fists or tapping to express her emotions. With a heavy sigh, she willed herself into a state of calm. She wasn’t sure why she was being so emotional. Perhaps the events of the last few minutes really had shaken her, beyond what she could comprehend. Turning towards Colin, she remembered what she was here for. She was supposed to be strong for him.

“Gottfried’s...Gottfried’s right, Colin.” She said, nodding in Gottfried’s direction. “Just know that you have allies here who will have your back even when you feel afraid and alone.”

With both sets of eyes (well, one set of eyes plus the visor of Gottfried’s helmet) suddenly on him, Colin’s ears burned as he suddenly became very interested in the grain of the wooden floor. They were right, both of them. Of course they were right. He’d heard the same things before, from Andi, from his siblings, even from his uncle, in a…. roundabout sort of way.

His arm itched and his hand creeped up to scratch it. For a moment he indulged the habit before snatching it back, “I have to be better,” he said quietly, not looking up, “I get it. I know that like this, I’m not going to last long. And I’m working on it, it’s just…” he paused, not sure how, or even if, to explain the long nights, the memories – if you could even call them that when they felt like so much more - that slipped up out of nowhere, the constant feeling of surprise when he made it to the morning still breathing, “It’s not simple. If I could be strong, then I would. If I could keep my head, then I would. If I could… be a person who doesn’t fuck everything up that he touches, then I would.”

He rubbed his temples, “I appreciate it though,” Gottfried didn’t seem unfamiliar with the sorts of memories that kept a person up all night, and the things he’d said suggested that he knew. It was always easier to trust people who knew, like Andi. And Eliza… her words were comforting in a way that not a lot of things were, mostly because he believed her, and what she’d said usually wasn’t so easy to believe. “I’m trying my best, and I won’t let myself be the reason we fail. That’s all I can promise.”

“Don’t promise things you cannot abide. That’s something I learnt a long time ago.” Gottfried said somberly. “All what is asked is that you try your best to survive and live for another day. Nothing more, nothing less. “ Gottfried sighed, somberly. He took a small corner to have a light seating, before the action made all of them sprung up. “Colin. Do you think nobodies make it to even be candidates of the Red Hoods? You caught their eyes because of something. Grasp that something and hone it.”

“And don’t waste words, or mince them. Or focus on all the little things. For all I know, me, you, the girl who brazenly strutted her werewolf condition and magic, this woman who keeps throwing me glares, the fairy, the other werewolf, the vampires, and the other men-at-arms could all be dead within the hour. All will be forgiven if you try and don’t waste your breath in petty things.” The knight stated.

“My name’s Eliza,” She stated pointedly, keeping her gaze calm so he couldn’t accuse her of glaring at him. She was tired of being called woman. Mages were always considered equal -aside from mentor/apprentice relationships- so she wasn’t used to this sort of treatment. Brighid had said it best, but she wouldn't repeat her ifriend's words. “I won’t be called woman any longer. When you're confronting me or I'm in the same room as you you will refer to be by my name. I'll do the same. It's called mutual respect.”
“See, that is a beginners’ mistake. I urge you to have a look around you and try to demand anything. You do not have means nor respect to do so. I will call you however I please and it will be up to you if you are going to show off your gifts like the other one and earn some more reprimand from our trainers. Of course, i am not beyond reason and i know that easing convivence is perhaps a good coping strategy. So is growing a thick skin. Consider it, next time it might not be a so called “angry” knight waving a sword threateningly. Or just a stupid discussion about whom deserves respect among equals.” The knight sighed deeply as he began to get ready. “I urge you to get ready, Eliza. Whatever shaped Finlay might be down the road.”

“I don’t need respect or means to ask someone to call me by name. It’s a common courtesy,” Eliza rolled her eyes at Gottfried when he told her that she didn’t have the right to demand anything. She nearly scoffed whenever he brought up Brighid. Her friend hadn’t even received a reprimand, he had. She had practically been commended for her actions. “And despite what you think, I have a thick skin. Otherwise I would have assaulted you when you put your sword to Brighid’s throat.” She tightened the straps of her knapsack, looking around the room. “I’ve been ready, Gottfried. My ‘shaping’ started two years ago. This is just another challenge along the way.” She paused. “I look forward to fighting alongside you, and proving myself.”

Colin mulled over Gottfried’s words. He wanted to believe him – to believe that maybe he had been selected to take part in the initiation for some reason other than just sheer dumb luck, but they hadn’t known much about him at the time, other than the fact that he could shoot some arrows. Fortunately, he was saved from having to think of some way to answer by Eliza's interjection.

Colin listened keenly to the heated exchange between the two, but kept his mouth shut. He agreed with Eliza – they’d only just met and she’d been nothing but kind already. She already had his respect, as did Gottfried. But, this was something they needed to work out between them. Not that Eliza seemed like she needed his help.

At Gottfried’s mention of the trial they were soon to face, his stomach dropped. A glance out of the window showed that it was early – still morning – and already exhaustion and spent adrenaline had settled deep in the core of his being. How on earth were they going to survive this when they could barely survive each other?

Still. They had to make an attempt, “If you’ll have me,” he offered cautiously, “I look forward to fighting alongside both of you, not just today – but after, too. Hopefully.”

“I don’t look forward to.” Gottfried stated. “But as much as I hate this, I hate maneaters more.” He paused. “So i have to work with what i am given.” Thick skin my ass, you are all puppy eyes towards your friend and you desire more than anything to prove me wrong. Even your replies carry an obvious denial. Well, your funeral. I am too old and too jaded to keep with this crap any longer. Gottfried shrugged quizzically. “I have to say that i feel honored. At least you have determination.”

Colin smiled at Gottfried’s reluctant admittal. It was true. No matter how they all felt about each other, at the end of the day they were here for one reason, and one reason alone – to destroy the monsters that existed only to harm. They didn’t have to like each other, they just had to trust each other. Colin glanced toward the corridor. Goose bumps pricked at his flesh and he tried to push the reminder of exactly what he was asking himself to trust from his mind.

That last bit wasn’t going be easy. They’d manage.

Somehow.

Now, all that was left to do was wait.

Ah...so that's the way the wind blows. Eliza no longer thinks of me as a friend. That didn't take long… She turned toward Bartholomew, or Tholo, was next then Vitius as they spoke she inclined her head and smiled sadly at them as they stated the chains stay off.

Then there was Sadon. She had no idea why he'd been sentenced. He pulled back his hood and revealed his gray hair. It was like moonlight from a half moon. She remembered the first time she saw it.
I watch across a crowded ballroom as couples dance. Some looking like they're in love others like they're going through the motions that society placed on them. My mentor, Calpernia, was invited I was just here to make connections. Her words not mine.

Sighing softly I fidget with my gown. The light pink form fitting, but simply cut, chiffon was not normal for me. Calpernia had insisted I wear it. At least she had caved on my footwear. Flats that she'd had dyed to match the dress. I'd much preferred my black, gray or sometimes blue, garments that you couldn't tell what my shape was. This, this seemed to scream that I had a figure and I was uncomfortable with the attention it caused.

Leaning against the wall alone I tried to blend in. I had hoped that Eliza was in attendance. My hopes flagged with each person that strolled in. I literally knew no one other than Calpernia.

“I told you Fendrel parties are the best.” I looked over at the young man who was speaking. He is with a friend and they can't be much older than my eighteen. His attention on me was...strange. He tapped his friend grinning wolfishly. “Look at this pretty little wallflower. Why are you back here in the dark, little one?”

I looked around. Surely they weren't talking to me? They both close in and I shrink further back in the shadows and they grin wider at my movements. I start to look for a way to get around them but every time I see one they cut it off. I am herded outside and I realized quickly there is no one out here.

Before the two could touch me the door creaked open just enough to let a figure come through- A flash of grey hair stepped outside, he had a forlorn look about him. Whos is that? His despondent eyes swam around the place before finding their way towards me and the two men.

“Eh, beat it kid, we’re busy he-”
“That grey tuft, isn’t he a Fendrel?”
“Nah, can’t be, right?”
“It doesn’t matter, this is none of his business, just tell him to get lost.”

“I may be reading this wrong, but that girl doesn’t look like she’s taken well to your… ‘advances’. I suggest backing off.”

“Who the fuck do you think you ar- wait, aren’t you Sadon?”
“HAH that pathetic excuse for a Fendrel? Whose he to tell us what to do.”

The figure- Sadon, didn’t react. His face never broke, I felt a pang of guilt, it was like he was wearing a porcelain mask. The two figures lunged at Sadon but he dodged effortlessly- soon they began stumbling on themselves, not landing a single hit.

Both my assailants looked tired. Sadon got around them after they stumbled past them and hit one with a neck chop, knocking the guy out cold. His friend swung widely but Fendrel sweeped his leg. He chin landed on concrete, I almost felt a bit sad for him.

Sadon looked at me now, he opened his mouth to say something but he didn’t. A few seconds passed before he just turned around walking towards the door.

“Thank you. I appreciate the rescue.” I was struck by how his hair looked like spun moonlight. His features almost delicate, right on the edge. I walked over to him rubbing my arms at the slight chill in the air. I smiled winningly and curtsied. “I’m Brighid O’Shay.” If I could get him to respond then maybe he wouldn’t look so sad.

“Ah.” he turned around, almost surprised that I referred to him, “I am… Sadon, Sadon Fendrel. Those two, I’ll handle them.” he then bowed awkwardly as if he just remembered to, “Enjoy the party.”

I looked puzzled. That sounded like a brush off. “Do you play chess?” I heard myself say shocking myself. I don’t normally try to make people stay and talk to me. I normally let them wander on by.

“... I suppose I am capable, yes. Why do you ask?”

“I enjoy it more than parties. Complicated conversation that I never understand half of the innuendo. How to hold you fan, fork... anything you really have in your hands. Not to mention your hands and where to place them. Dancing and the question of how much touching is appropriate or how much conversation is expected. It’s all so complicated. Chess is simple in its rules and no one gets hurt in chess.” I looked up at the stars and sighed. “Plus you don’t have to dress up for chess. You can wear comfortable clothes.” I let my gaze fall back to him. I was going to push the boundaries of propriety with this next question but I’d get no real enjoyment out of the night if I didn’t ask. “Would you fancy a game?”

“Alright, sure.” Sadon said, a look of sympathy about him. “I’ll grab the chessboard, it is quiet enough out here so we can play here.” he then started walking back inside. After a few minutes the door opened and out came Sadon with a chessboard by his side. He sat by the fountain and set up the pieces.

I sat down and listened to the fountain splashing as Sadon set up the board.
“Black or white?” I rubbed my arms a little at the cool night air. Calpernia was worse than some matchmaking mama. The chiffon whispered as I rubbed my arms and I cursed that I hadn’t given in to making it silk, at least that held body heat. Possibly not a good idea if it had been really windy.

“Black.” he replied. I saw the door creak open again, the person had the insignia of Fendrel on his tabard. The bulky figure picked up the two unconscious men and before he turned around to leave Sadon called out to him. Whispering something in his ears. The guard nodded and walked away. A few moments later the guard came back with an opulent cloak, who handed it off to him with a grunt and left them to their own devices. The cloak had the Fendrel insignia embroidered on the left shoulder. I was then offered this cloak.

I accepted the cloak and put it on grateful for the warmth as I sat down in front of the white pieces. I caressed the ivory pawn as I confidently placed my first piece starting the forward march. Back and forth we went my concentration split between the attractive man and the board. I caught him not paying attention to the board a few times and each time made my cheeks warm. I teased him looking up from the board.
“I have you in three moves, Sadon. It’s a wonder you don’t see it.” I smirked when he looked up at me and I felt my cheeks go hot.

His silvery eyes then swam around the board, widening slightly when he realized she was right.
“You’re right, Lady O’Shay.” he tipped his king horizontally, “Sorry, my focus... wasn’t entirely all here.”

“No need to be so formal. This is the most fun I’ve had in awhile…” I bit my lip. “My apologies I shouldn’t have taken liberties with assuming to call you by your first name.” I could feel the shame slump my posture and I became unsure in why he chose to forfeit. My hand hovered over the board indecisively. “Giving up? Why? You could have gotten out of that easily.”

“No worries, refer to me as you like. It’s just that I can’t wholly foc-” An unfamiliar voice interrupted him, I could tell that Sadon froze up.

A man with a fierce gaze and a choking presence was now glaring at Sadon. He looked very similar to Sadon, ashen grey hair with silver eyes.
“Sadon. This... is what you do at our gatherings? Your presence is required. Two minutes..”

“Yes… Father.” Sadon replied, his ‘mask’ hardened, making him impossible to read.. He placed his hand on his chest and bowed to me, “Apologies Miss Bridghid.”

Brighid looked at the man who went wild eyed and pointed his bow at Vitius. Well isn't this fun. Looks like we find out who needs to be watched.

She heard the song of a sword leaving a sheath and watched in slow motion as it pointed at her neck. Knowingly fully well she could step out of range but she wanted to let it be known that she wasn't the aggressor. She looked at the male that was holding the sword as he said something about unauthorized use of magic and prisoners. He threatened to cut my head off called me by my gender and threatened those whom I released? Well I guess the walking clank will keep this is entertaining. This one and the archer need to be watched. She kept her eyes on the tin man. She raised an eyebrow as Finlay started yelling and tossing the chains at someone, out of the corner of her eye she couldn’t tell who. He then grabbed the blade.

He sliced his hands and her eyes widened as the coppery scent of blood washed over her. She got side tracked as she wondered how the vampires would take it. Snapping back to reality as Finlay was mentioning these people being her best friends? Yeah she had an issue with my best friend pulling a sword on me because they thought that they were better than me. I also had an issue with them aiming a bow at someone’s head just because they were different. Not to mention she had issues with people she thought were her friends; then decided that their friendship, no matter that they’d known each other for at least four years now, wasn’t worth mentioning. Brighid was hurt. Eliza hadn’t said a word of knowing her. And the summoner fool had put his chains back on. At least Vitius and Tholo had the right idea. She couldn’t believe Sadon had wanted them back on as well.

She almost lost it laughing when Finlay said that the next person to hand him anything without him asking for it he’d take their head. The man was funny. It took all her will to keep a straight face. He turned to leave and gave them fifteen minutes.

Brighid couldn’t turn away from someone in need. She was a Healer. She knew she could fix him without scaring him further. She just had to. She shook her head and decided to deal with a problem she knew she could fix. Healing Finlay.

She turned toward the man that the little fairy was hiding in the shirt color of. She nodded to him and stated in a soft calm voice. “I’ll be right back. I need to heal Finlay.” As she passed the rooms she called out. “Vitius. Tholo. I’ll be back in a few.”

Brighid broke away from the rest of the group that lingered in the hallway not looking back after telling the male and fairy as well as Vitius and Tholo that she would be back. He’s hurt. It might not be my fault but he’s right and I have more to lose then most. If I fail I die. Others have the luxury of not worrying about that, I do not. She took off after Finlay.

Turning the corner she caught the edge of his cloak in her vision and quickened her pace a bit to catch up. She almost stumbled into him as she turned the corner. She stopped in time not to plaster herself to his back. “You’re hurt. I can fix that.”

Finlay spun gradually, seemingly unsurprised by her approach. Her footsteps no doubt telegraphed her impending arrival long before he set eyes on her.. His face wore a metaphorical mask that epitomized inconvenience. “I’m bleedin’,” he corrected. “Takes a bit more to hurt.” He stood there and looked at the open wound on his hand. A small smirk crept out. “Yunno, they say the Commander’s hood started out yella and that’s why she starts us all out the same.” The crimson fluid trickled slowly down his arm, following the flow of his veins on his wrist. “It only got red with blood when she first took a stand against it all. And then a legend was born.” He closed his hand slowly before reopening it. It was deep enough that it’d likely need stitches. “How d’ya suppose you can fix this?

Brighid sucked in a breath at the wound. “That’s deeper than I thought.” She looked back up at him. “I’m a Healer. A White Healer. Not that it matters now all anyone sees is a wolf. Interestingly enough that hasn’t changed the fact that I can do some general spells and my speciality. If I could have your hands.” Brighid waited for him to place his hands in hers. “As for standing against it all… someone has to or it never stops. I can appreciate standing against injustice and evil but one voice doesn’t get heard in the dark. It’s the multitude; and those backing her had just as much to do with it, if not more, than she did. Bet it took a lot of convincing till she found people who would listen and help.” She raised an eyebrow and bounced her hands gently.

He gave a small huff of surrender as he presented his hands. He could argue, claim to be able to tough it out, but if there was someone offering a magical cure, it was foolish to ignore it. “You earn your red and you won’t be looked at as a wolf,” he assured her as he looked her up and down. “You let someone catch you with a sword again, though, and yer gonna get stares.” There was no humor in his voice. It seemed like a genuine statement. After a moment, he looked at his own hands as his eyes darted between the two, a nervous tell that occurred when Finlay was thinking deeply. “Brighid, wolf, caster.” He recited in monotone. “Give me something exciting,” he instructed. “What else?

Brighid held the top of his forearms which were parallel to the floor at the moment. She raised an eyebrow at his notice of the fact that she could have moved out of the tin man’s sword range before he’d had it drawn. “Ah you noticed that. I felt I was being a bit more patronizing if I let him telegraph his suspicions. Besides while I believe what I said fully I did also want to make sure whom I needed to watch out for and make it apparent to others whom needed to watch out for.” She raised an eyebrow at his comment of give him something exciting. “Exciting? What could I have that would be in the least bit exciting to a Red Hood? Besides the more excited you get the more you’re going to bleed all over the keep. I rather fancy that you’d not like to have all the vampires and werewolves know where you reside.” She fluttered her eyes shut and her lips parted. Turning his arms over she ran her fingers from forearm to catch his hands in hers. She didn’t seem to notice the blood or really care. She sucked in a breath and shakily breathed out “Eless- sina rúatan's harwe...”

She knew all he could feel is possibly a tingling sensation and that the pain would vanish just before that, perhaps nothing. It was different for some people. Some healing felt like a wash of warm water, static shock, some people could smell flowers, hear the tinkling of bells. Even taste honey, mint, cinnamon or cloves. Though taste was rare. Rarer still was seeing it, and just about unheard of was all sensory experience. It was mostly different for different people that were being healed.

Except for her the pain was always there. It reminded her of the conditioning they went through to be Whites. She breathed through the pain and the heady rush of feelings that came with it, shaky and breathy but wanting to distract herself she continued talking. “Some people can feel, smell, hear, taste or see healing magic. But full sensory experience is just about unheard of. They test you for full sensory experience when you test for Healing. If you don’t have three out of five you don’t get in. Only those who have a full sensory experience are some of the best. As a White they stretch your pain threshold and teach you various ways to work through it, bury it, turn it into something...else or push past it. If you don’t know, as a White we take the pain as well as healing you. Most Healers don’t experience anything when they heal other than Whites that is and usually that is only the pain.” She shivered let her breath out shakily and let go. His hands clear not a mark in sight. She kept her eyes closed and tried to calm down.

Her heart pounded like a drum and her breathing was ragged. She circled a hand counter clockwise her palm facing downward and open at the start fingers splayed. Her wrist rotated upward as she made the clockwise motion and she closed her hand making a fist that came palm up at the end of the motion while saying, “Awaime as sina sercë.” Suddenly all the blood was gone. She breathed in and out slowly. “Well normally this doesn’t affect me that much. But I’m guessing that I’ll be feeling things more acutely from here on out. Only been like this about two weeks now, since the last full moon.” She didn’t look up at Finlay and turned to go.

Finlay made a fist, examining the handiwork before his eyes returned to Brighid. Pleased, he opened his mouth to say something, but stopped short. As he stood there, the floor space he was occupying was suddenly shrouded in shadow. There was someone standing behind him. Finlay steeled himself as he turned, but he needn’t see with his own eyes to know with whom he was about to face. His vision trailed from the floor and climbed up the onyx cloth to the pitch void that covered Zeke’s face. No words were spoken, you could just hear the latter breathing, each huff that rained down from the towering figure rolled with a gravelly undertone. Finlay stared into the void for just a moment before nodding uncomfortably. After the unspoken exchange, Zeke turned and walked away, leaving Finlay standing there in the corridor to contemplate his next move.

Well then,” he said to himself in a whisper. “ I suppose the fun begins.” He then turned to follow Brighid back to where the rest of the initiates were.

Vitius Dragomir

Location: Red Hood Keep | Sleeping Quarter's

Vitius felt himself freeze in horror as he saw several heavily armed figures clad in red surround him and what was left of his friends, his brothers in arms. The only one's who had stayed by his side even after his transformation into a creature of the night. The only one's in Ebongrove who still viewed him as a human rather than a monster to be feared and hunted.

The ones that his actions had unintentionally placed in mortal danger.

He felt his legs grow weak as he watched several of his fellow guardsmen charge towards the hooded figures, the intent to defend his life at all costs written plainly on their faces, only to see them get cut down one by one without mercy or compassion, leaving only him and his close friend Liro, whom he viewed as the brother he never had, the only ones left standing in the forest clearing.

Doing his best to ignore the bloodied corpses of the mem he'd trained and fought alongside for most of his life, Vitius focused his attention on the Red Hood's surrounding them instead.

"Liro, listen to me..." Vitius said as he assumed a defensive stance. "I'll use my enhanced strength and speed to break their ranks. Once that happens, I need you to run. Don't worry about me, just haul ass out of here understand?"

A brief pause followed by silence.

"Liro?"

"Lir-"

"No."

"What!?" Vitius snapped, turning his head towards the bearded swordsman slightly. "Are you insane? This is your chance to escape!"

"And leave you here to die or worse?" He asked. "Fuck that. I'm not letting you sacrifice yourself just so I can run away like a coward." Liro said, holding his sword at the ready as he moved to stand back to back with Vitius.

"You're a stubborn son of a bitch, you know that right?" Vitius said, letting out a short, annoyed, chuckle.

"Aye, I do. And I'll make sure these Red Hood bastards know it to..."

Vitius sat up with a start and briefly wondered where he was before it finally came back to him. He was in the Red Hood keep, sitting on his bunk. He was safe, for the moment anyway.

Looking around he saw that it was still early morning and realised that he must have dozed off while he was thinking. It was the only reason he'd re-live that painful memory as he was constantly pushing it to the back of his mind while fully conscious.

Vitius continued to let his gaze wander around the room as he slowly massaged his temples with his fingers, until it eventually fell on a woman with silvery-white hair, a somewhat pale complexion, crimson-ish eyes, and a scent that smelled of rotted leaves and decay mixed with the smell of spiced ale or cinnamon.

"She must be a Dhampir." Vitius thought to himself as he shifted his gaze down to the rough wooden floor. While he hadn't smelled the scents of other vampires after being turned and despite the fact his sense of smell wasn't as good as a Werewolf's, Vitius could easily guess her true nature. The rotten smell was something that he knew only a walking corpse could have, but the smell of thing's usually associated with warmth, like spiced ale and cinnamon, he knew only a human could have. All he had to do was put two and two together in order to figure out the rest.

As he stared at the floor, Vitius wondered if she had gone through the same hardships as him or if she'd had it easier due to her half-blooded nature. It was probably the latter, considering she didn't seem to be viewed with more suspicion than was usual for the Hood's. And she hadn't been chained up like him or the others, so that was something.

The sound of footsteps approaching caused Vitius to fix his gaze on the entryway to the room as all the musings he'd had about recent events were banished from his mind.

"Just stay put and we'll see how Finlay and the rest of the Hoods handle it."

As the tension in the room escalated, Loona's grip on Nick's jacket tightened with it. "O-Okay...but Mr. Finlay and the other Red Hoods are mostly human right?"

...Can't really say for sure...

"If any of these guys started fighting then..." She trailed off and he tightened his hold on the hilt and the grip in his hands.

"It won't get that far." Nick began. "And to be honest, if we can't make it one day without killing each other..." He glanced about the room, pulling his eyes away from Blanchette and observing Finlay and the other hoods around them. The commander herself was poised; motionless as if she weren't even there. The hoods as well, sentries in the walls stripping their initiates bare with eyes that were taking note of every move, every decision. Finlay... Finlay was turning red and was clearly a hair's breadth away fro-

"Listen fookin 'ere!"

...There we are...

Nick watched as the veteran hood threw the manacles at the archer, the metal bands falling just shy of Colin’s face before grabbing the knight's brandished sword by the blade itself. He felt a twitch behind his neck. Steel severed flesh and drew blood but even as red began to paint the length of the sword, Finlay did nothing but ignore it. He addressed the room instead with a reprimand and a reminder, one Nick already understood. This place wasn't home. The rules weren't the same anymore. The people around you, they weren't monsters. Weren't heroes. Saviors. Gods. Demons. Men or women. Inside these walls, you were either a Hood or you weren't. Everything else was left at the door.

Nick glanced at Loona from the corner of his eye. She was still huddling in the space she'd created between his neck and his jacket, watching everything unfold, holding tight to him and hoping that things wouldn’t escalate further. Thankfully they hadn't and the both of them became visibly more relaxed.

"See?" He asked when things had finally settled, not really sure if he was speaking to himself or the Fae. He watched her pull away.

"Y-Yeah." She gave him a smile and a small bow. The girl was polite as ever. "Thanks for letting me hide while everything was going on." She continued in a more sheepish tone, one of her hands moving to scratch the back of her head. "I-I normally ask, but...u-um yeah."

Nick smiled at the display, still genuinely surprised that she of all people had volunteered to be here of all places. Her soft spoken attitude. The naivety in her eyes. The warmth that oozed off every word she spoke. The reasons that brought her here in the first place. She was entirely too bright for a place that was born of dark intent. Then again, maybe that was exactly why she needed to be here. There was a stark contrast between the perceived 'monsters' in the room and those who weren't. A werewolf removing shackles and stating her peace despite who she was. The vampire pushing a child out of the way of danger. A fae, a fraction of the size and strength of anybody else in the room and yet she chose to make this her life.

And here she was, scratching the back of her head as if she'd done something wrong. Everything was backwards.

"You don't have to ask." He said, nodding toward the area where she'd hid herself. "It's yours whenever."

"Really? You don't mind?"

He shook his head. "Besides, knowing me, it'll probably be helpful to have someone on my back to watch it." His smile turned sheepish and it was his turn to scratch the back of his head and look away. "Eeeeh... Sometimes I forget to look before I leap."

His chest began hurt and there was a sudden urge to rub the area, but a sigh from Loona distracted him. He turned to her again in time to catch the curling edges of her lips and her hands clasping into fists in front of her chest. Her face brightened up as if he'd said something interesting. "Ah, i-is that so? I actually kinda have the opposite problem you have. Sometimes I look too much and miss my chance to leap..."

...Hm...

"R-Regardless we're teammates now so I'll make sure to be there to support you as best a-as I can. A-And the others too of course, haha."

"Yeah..." He let slip a small, nervous laugh as he glanced about the hall once more. He watched the others move to their rooms, all of them like children after a scolding. Some trying to make amends or find peace where they could. The rest simply moving on and moving forward. A group nearly fractured and they'd barely just begun. Loona's promise to himself and everyone else put her in arguably the toughest position and he did not envy her. "...We're going to need it and in fifteen minutes we're going to find out exactly how bad." As he was finishing, Brighid strode up to the pair to excuse herself before chasing after Finlay. Not entirely sure why she had, Nick watched the woman leave and disappear around a corner before turning back to Loona. "We should get ready. We don't need him yelling at us again."

"Y-Yeah, you're probably right..."

"Before you go... Hold out your hand in a fist." It was a sudden and strange request, he knew, but Loona surprised him yet again when she obliged. With a tilt of her head and less than a second of hesitation, she held out a fist toward him.

"Like this?"

...Exactly...

He reached out and tapped it with the tip of his finger and Loona, clearly confused, blinked. Nick chuckled. “That'll be our greeting. It's a little quicker and it'll save that dust of yours.” At least he hoped. He wasn't exactly sure how the vial of dust worked or how much of the stuff she had in it. However, it being a substance that could cure or potentially resize an object made it fairly valuable. He figured he'd let her keep most of it for the more important task of aiding those around her rather than for the shaking of his hand. She seemed to understand. Confusion had turned to understanding which had quickly turned into a giggle.

"Yeah, you're r-right. I think I like this better too!" She said with a smile, her hand returning to her side.

"Good. See you in fifteen?"

The Fae nodded eagerly before giving him a quick wave and then floating off towards her room. Nick's room was opposite and if he remembered correctly, he'd been paired with...

...Devout. Whitelock...O'Shay...

Three names he flipped over and over in his head as he made his way. The only thing that peaked his interest more than meeting the Fae, was the fact that he'd be sharing quarters with the passionate redhead herself. A woman too beautiful for shackles...

...Or not...

Framed in blood and bold enough to make moves of her own accord. Bold was dangerous, but also quite fun and if nothing else, he was sure he'd not want for interesting conversation. There was a story there somewhere about who she was, how'd she turned and more importantly, how exactly she knew what everyone was. He hadn't been made aware, but then again, maybe he wasn't paying attention. It wouldn't have been the first. To add more fuel to his curiosity, she was a healer. An odd combination that. A fiery woman. A healer. A werewolf. A view from behin-

He stepped into the room to find Whitelock.

...Tholo...

According to Brighid, Bartholomew was a Werewolf as well. A tall, elderly and seemingly stoic man. Head of white and skin cracked around eyes of grey. History carved deep into the stone of his face and the multitude of lines telling of just how much history. Nick didn't take Bartholomew for one to express his concerns. The man breathed of a soul who held very few qualms and dealt with the rest when it was time to. Brighid however had given him a reason to speak and speak he did.

There's was nothing more dangerous than a man with a lot to say who also knew how to handle himself. The man here seemed exactly that and Nick had been assigned to bed with him. With both the man and and the woman. Two werewolves and one man. Not exactly the tryst trio he'd imagined and not exactly one he was sure he could survive. Then again there was supposed to be another.

Devout, whoever they were, was a mystery. They'd not introduced themselves or been called to directly by name so he could only hope for a woman. He was seriously hoping for a woman.

"Tholo, right?" Nick walked to the other end of the room and pulled two of the swords off his back before setting them down next to one of the open bunks. He did a quick check of his gear, making sure pouches were closed, blades were sheathed and pulled tight against him and then moved to find the wolf once more. He held out hand. "I'm Nick."

Nyssa Devout

Location: Red Hood Keep
Interacting With: none/open
Mention: Everyone.

Nyssa stood with the group as Commander Rouge had been doing a pretty grand speech, one that was straight to the point and spelled out clearly what their purpose and life was truly going to be about now, inspiring but demanded respect. She introduced some other reds and pretty much announced that other monsters were among them… Of course there would be, there were rumours what the reds did, even amongst the order she was with before coming here of what they did, only now she would be living in it.

Soon Finlay who was now responsible for the new merry band of misfits had taken them towards the rooms they would be staying in, even bunking up with these strangers. It was made clear, work together and have chance to live or simply die. The gravity of this new life was sinking in on Nyssa’s mind as she watched on, remaining silent. When they arrived her name was called out with several others, Album, O’Shay and Whitlock were to share the room on the right with her.

Nyssa was now standing there with the group, quietly she observed the group she was with, taking in their actions, appearance or anything that would give her an insight as to what or whom they were about, no doubt like herself, they all had a path that lead them to this keep, a story no doubt to tell. “Lehta.” A redhead randomly spoke up and within seconds her chains came off, this certainly got the attention of Nyssa and had her kind of straightened up as she watched on with intrigue as she introduced herself as Brighid O’Shay.

She went on a grand speech herself, explaining what she did not want to be called while actually pointing out what everyone was, but what got Nyssa’s attention the most was when the woman had pointed her out as a newly turned, that alone would complicate matters in a place like this for the white haired woman, even if she was wrong, Nyssa would know doubt have to have a word with this woman. ‘Of course she would be a spellcaster, but a werewolf I did not foresee’ Nyssa thought as the woman released the chains of from the others, but found herself looking over a lot to the Vampire.

After that is another young lady had spoken up, her words left Nyssa believe that she knew of Brighid before arriving here… and seemed to freak out at the actions of the redhead for releasing those that were forced to come here, she could relate of course, it was a dangerous and even a silly move, but one that showed initiative and believed in her actions and that Nyssa could respect, either way the other wanted them back in chains but what was done is done.

Eliza was her name, she seemed like a sweet enough type, not what you would expect to turn up here but another spellcaster but was human, might make her life here a little easier, it did actually amuse her that Eliza wanted everyone to get on and be friends, but far as Nyssa was concerned trust was needed but at least this spellcaster seemed to have her heart in the right place. Whitlock soon introduced himself, he kept it sweet and short and showed no desire putting the chains on, that was at least two now that she knew was sharing the room with her.

Other soon introduced themselves, Vitius, the vampire, that alone was enough to have Nyssa wanting to go right over there and kill him, a low growl did escape her lips but it appeared no one had noticed, but if stares could kill, he’d be on the floor right now. Sadon, a young man that had a name that sounded familiar but here it mattered not, maybe more about his family name will show itself in time.

Nyssa had at this point felt it was worth introducing herself, it was formal at least for other to know her name at the very least, she went to open her mouth…

“Don’t fecking try anything, bloodsucker. One move, and this arrow’s in your chest.”

This alone had Nyssa look over at the man that spoke, the idiot was armed with a bow and arrow, and armed he was, raised and pointed directly at Vitius, okay she was certainly amused at this sight already, a smile slightly cracking up on her lips, now things got interesting and if she had coin, hell she’d probably pay him to shoot it… what did he call it bloodsucker? Down, although, she would not appreciate it that much if he called her that, most likely be a very different conversation indeed.

And well after that, it just spiralled out of control, it was only a matter of time when you cram human and a myriad of monsters or in her case, the best of both worlds in a corridor together. A fully armoured man decided it be a great idea to shove his sword upon Brighid’s throat and blast about unauthorized use of magic, well Nyssa would be more than happy to tell that idiot that he just unsheathed his weapon without authorization to, and weather that woman was werewolf, Nyssa felt it was totally unnecessary to put a blade to a woman’s throat, his reaction to arm himself was good and be handy in a combat situation but not this one, if only she could smack the yellow out of his teeth.

Everything went in a blur, arrows though, did not go flying, a pity really the guy should never of gave that thing over there to even get anywhere near him. And then that poor boy stepped in the way, yes that would make it more complicated, the kid tried to stop it, it was cute but admirable, just even Vitius touching him had Nyssa fight every impulse not to take out Quintilla, her unique detachable blade and gut the blasted thing. Nyssa was about to spring into action, maybe her action would either make a good or bad impression, but at least she could introduce herself with the ends of her blades, "Listen fookin 'ere!"

Finlay; there superior finally grew some balls and finally shouted at the group, not mincing his words he made it clear they needed each other and pretty much shut down the situation, Nyssa’s arms were crossed, when she crossed them she had no idea, everything just went to crap and sorted itself so fast that the white haired woman just stood there with a look of ‘what in god’s name did I just witness” Her mind had wondered of somewhat as her thoughts went to just why she had volunteered to come here. ‘Thunk!’ Nyssa actually jumped at the sound of… An arrow hitting the ceiling, ‘The idiot actually went and bloody missed.’ And yes you can even make a supernatural wonder like a Dhampir jump.

Once things had calmed down, Nyssa remembered Finlay said about being ready in fifth teen minutes, not much time to get settled really, Hell she only just realized she never introduced herself as she saw the redhead spellcaster that started all this mess leave after their superior to go heal him. Nyssa had since made her way into the room, she saw that there were two men bunking at one side of the room, interacting, her glance at them didn’t last long as she turned her attention to her bed, placing what little belongings she had left on the bed and place her blade down, her amber eyes looking over the weapon, she would need to get it and her daggers ready, to which she placed down to one side also, as she silently went about her business of getting ready.

To say things could of gone better was an understatement. At least for the very least there had not been any bloodshed before Finley had stepped in. While so far going by appearance and mannerisms he didn't think he would ever get along much with Finley, he still could hold respect for the man being able to take control of the situation and being able to make all seemingly shrink under his gaze. Once everything had been sorted out Tholo had retired to the assigned room with his other three bunk-mates.

Having now had the chance to view most of the other initiates he was brought in with, he saw he was an odd outlier. Most were several years younger then he. He wondered to himself how the others would view his older appearance. He'd just have to make sure to show he still could keep up, albeit maybe an ache here or there though they were rare.

O'Shay mentioned his name which had him look over to her. He nodded as she stated she was going to be leaving for a moment."Don't get into to much trouble," Tholo replied trying to keep the moment a bit lighthearted after the past few events. He went back to his thoughts as he looked about the small space he would now have to call home and share with three others. Life had to be such a fickle thing to lead him here. At least now perhaps he could maybe make some understanding of what he was and not worry as much about ripping some innocent bastards throat out.

Tholo was approached by one of the other tenants of the room. A younger fellow then he. The young man stated his name was Nick and after looking at his hand briefly, Tholo reached forward and shook his hand with his."Yes, Tholo it is my good man," he stated giving a smile. At least not everyone was terrified of the idea of having to share a room with monsters, or at least he hoped so.

"So didn't see you chained up. Volunteer then?" Tholo asked ",Forgive my prying but you seem a lot younger then what I would expect to volunteer for such a job that we are now stuck with."

Nick nodded with a smile, his eye catching movement by the door. Glancing over, he noticed a woman stride into the room, eye the both of them and then make for the bunks on the other end. The only other woman who was supposed to be in there besides Brighid was a Devout, the last name he had to put to a face and, to his luck and fortune, it was indeed a woman. Lithe body and pale skin. White hair flowing past her shoulders like a frozen river. The eyes, though he'd only been allowed a moment to catch them, were speckled golden. She was also rather short but he wasn't one to complain.

"I think..." He began, pulling his eyes way from the woman. He'd let them explore the outlines of her body long enough. "...I think the kid has me beat on that." Nick moved over to one of the walls nearest the door and put his back to it, weight on one leg and the other bent across the first. From here he could see both of the other occupants in the room. "If it'd been completely up to me, I'd be younger still. Never too late though." He gave a shrug and a small chuckle. "But yes. Volunteered. And not too worried about the 'job' either. I'm more worried about what might happen if I can't do it." He then nodded toward Bartholomew "Sentenced... I remember. The way I understand it, you had a choice right? To either die or serve here? You have something worth living for Werewolf? Worth surviving this?"

Gottfried looked about the room, lines of worry forming on the edges of his eyes. "I want out."

"What's that?" Finlay asked, as if truly not understanding a word he just heard.

"I change my mind. I want out. I'm not having any of this. Working with bloodsuckers, hell's hounds. No. I will fight the good fight on my own." Finlay looked at Gottfried in silence for a moment, analyzing the knight's convictions.

"Right. Fine, then. Come with me. The rest of yas stay here." Finlay gave Gottfried a nod, prodding him to walk ahead down the corridor that lead back to the main entrance. Finlay followed closely, matching Gottfried's pace as they both stepped to the rhythm of the noisy chain mail.

After that, Finlay didn't come back for a solid twenty minutes before his figure was seen with another returning from the same corridor. A slender woman with dark hair led the way as they walked up to the group and came to a stop. This was not the only group of initiates in the keep today and Finlay simply took her away from her previous group.

"Kiri Hae," he introduced, pointing to the woman. "Bunch o' dobbers," he then said, now pointing at the group of initiates. "Dobbers, Kiri." He looked around the room and did a quick headcount. "Kiri, you're with Celestina and Rivington. We're still one shy o' even teams." Finlay pondered on this for a moment before announcing "A few minutes more... I'll be back." With that, he left Kiri behind to interact with the group as he went down the corridor and disappeared from sight.

Kiri Hae

Kiri stood where Finlay had placed her, surveying her new cohort in silence. She'd let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding when the Red Hood had placed her with this new group. For a moment she'd been terrified that she'd been seen through -- measured and found wanting, like she had been her entire life, and they were going to kick her out with a patronizing laugh and a pat on the head.

But no. No, she was still here. They were still giving her a chance -- an opportunity for her to prove herself before dismissing her outright. Nerves still danced in her stomach but she took a quiet, steadying breath. She was still here. She wasn't out yet.

This new group, though... most of them were young, around her age, fresh faced and nervous looking. Only a handful of them looked like they'd ever actually seen a fight before. And there... were there children in this group?! Kiri bristled. This was the group they'd decided she belonged with. Her eyes fell to the two Finlay had indicated as her new partners: a young man with a frantic, scared look in his eyes, and what looked to be a tiny floating child. Kiri's gaze paused at the sight. She wasn't accustomed to seeing magic. But she held back any reaction she might've had.

It didn't matter who Kiri was with. It didn't matter if they'd put her with the remedial group. She could do this. She'd come this far.

Without so much as a greeting, Kiri brushed past the group to enter the room she assumed was hers and dropped her bag onto one of the beds, claiming it.

Colin watched as Gottfried was escorted out.

He shot Eliza a nervous look. The knight had seemed strong, not just physically – although being able to take a hit seemed like it would have been a useful skill to have on their side. Beyond that, if someone like Gottfried couldn’t make it, then what chance did he have?

They’d let him go though. With relatively little fuss. It seemed, perhaps, like this would be their last chance to leave. Colin would have been lying if he said he didn’t want to join Gottfried and walk right out that door – but he couldn’t. The knight looked like a formidable opponent, and Colin believed him when he said he’d be ‘fighting the good fight’ alone. Colin on the other hand, was under no delusions that he would be capable of the same thing.

It took a while for Finlay to return, time he made use of to prepare for the upcoming trial. Pointedly avoiding eye contact with the few stragglers still milling about the hallway, he walked up to where his arrow was still sticking out of the ceiling gripped it firmly in his right hand, and managed to pull it out with just a few good tugs. He inspected it for damage – it seemed pretty much okay – and placed it back in his quiver. He counted them up – fifteen arrows. Not too bad, depending on what they were about to face. If it came to it, he always had his daggers as back up.

He went back to where he’d dumped his back on the bed, rummaged around for a second until he came up with his arm guard and glove. His forearm was still red and sore from firing without wearing it earlier, and would likely bruise come afternoon – a rookie mistake, and one that he was lucky hadn’t been more costly. He slipped the guard on now, so that he didn’t forget.

Feeling at least a little more prepared than before, he poked his head back out of the room at the sound of approaching footsteps.

Finlay was back, behind him young woman followed. She had a vicous looking sword strapped to her waiste, and was wearing the look of somebody being escorted to their execution – this was Gottfried’s replacement? An expression that Colin couldn’t quite place crossed her delicate features – it hadn’t been pleasant, whatever it was - an intuition she confirmed as she brushed past and into the room without a second glance.

Well, wasn’t she just delightful?

He turned to follow her, watching as she dumped her belongings on a bed in stony silence. He should probably introduce himself if they were going to be roommates.

He cleared his throat from where he stood by the door, “The name’s Colin, by the way. Not that you seem all that interested.”

Kiri Hae

Kiri took off her cloak and loosely folded it before dropping it next to her bag on the bed. She was in the process of rolling back her shoulders, her inked skin, verdant green and dusty rose, peaking out from under her top.

A throat cleared behind her. A voice, its tone dry and sarcastic, introduced herself. Kiri felt her irritation rise. Pausing, she glanced over her shoulder to see her new roommate standing in the doorway. His expression was as sardonic as his words. Kiri’s eyes sharpened.

Before, he'd been uninspiring. Now he was annoying.

She turned and walked toward him. Holding his gaze, Kiri stopped in front of him, her expression flat. ”You’re blocking the door, Colin.”

Loona made it very clear she was trying to avoid anyone getting in her way, seeing as she practically zoomed into the room she'd be sharing with two other people. She wasn't exactly expecting anything special or accommodating to come from the generic room, but she could safely say that she missed the flowers and the trees, and the open sky already. Not enough to leave, but enough to make her notice how much different the keep was to her home...

Upon entering the room, there was already someone's belongings in one of the beds. She knew who those belonged to, that antsy guy who pulled out a weapon during that whole fiasco...great, that's exactly who she wanted to share a room with...hopefully he wouldn't see her as a threat. Loona only hovered around his things curiously for a moment before flying away and towards the window, watching as said man made his way back inside their shared room and proceeded to get something out of his things. Seeing as she probably wasn't noticed by the other, Loona remained at the window, hands clasped tightly around her necklace. She had thought back to what Nicholas said about her fairy dust, and it made her wonder if she'd have enough for what was in store for them. The tiny girl couldn't be sure even if she asked, but it would be better to have more than less, right?

Working out the thoughts carefully in her mind, Loona came to the conclusion to take this time to refill her reserves. And that she did, with closed eyes and a stern face, the shimmery silver dust exuded from in between her shoulder blades, down her dress, and eventually sprinkled into the silver hourglass necklace she placed underneath her hovering body a mere seconds prior. She would have kept going until the necklace as well as other portions of her body and clothes were covered in the dust, but Loona was soon interrupted by the sound of two other voices near the door; one man and the other female.

Quickly tugging her necklace over her head, Loona slowly hovered onward the two with green filled with confusion. The antsy guy, Colin was his name, was introducing himself to a woman she'd never seen before. Wasn't she suppose to room with another guy? Too nervous to speak up at all about it, Loona couldn't help but be a bit caught off guard by how cold this woman was being...she definitely gave off 'ice queen' vibes if Loona didn't know any better. She should probably speak up though before any of them start arguing again, but what to say?
“U-Um...so...it looks l-like we're all roommates..?” She mumbled, being sure to keep her distance in case either of them had some sort of fit. She'd rather not be injured by the people she's meant to trust...

Jaw set, Colin eyed Kiri as she approached. Candlelight from the sconces lining the walls flickered over her stony features, casting them in a grim light. The urge to take a step backwards swelled, but he stayed firm, meeting her cool eyes dead on. About to say something, he opened his mouth, however, he stopped at the sound of another voice popping up from the back corner of the room - “U-Um...so...it looks l-like we're all roommates..?”

There was someone else in there with them?

He cast an eye over the room – skimmed over the four rickety cots, the chest of draws, shoved into the corner and blanketed in a thick mat of dust, the bookshelves, home to what appeared to be a tattered copy of some previous occupant’s personal bestiary, missing half of its pages – all absolutely fascinating, but still not a third person - whom he assumed was 'Celestina'.

Except – what was that? A green glimmer, out of the corner of his eye. He directed his attention towards it, taking a moment to make out the shape of an, incredibly small, young woman. He rubbed his bottom lip with the back of his thumb, an unusually considered movement, brow furrowed, “Are you… some kind of spellcaster?”
