Name: Derrick Fall
Age: 31
Appearance:
Personality: Derrick is a smart ass who doesn't seem to care too much about people's problems, status, or even their safety. A natural asshole and he likes it that way; he's been burn too many times by having feelings for people and would rather that they keep a safe distance from him as he goes about his business. He respects those who can see pass his crude demeanor and trade jabs with him though, as he doesn't have the patience for people who are more petty or sensitive. An honest man to a fault. He doesn't like lying and isn't afraid to resort to dishonorable and cowardly things, but he's also the type of guy who'll do what he wants regardless of the costs. He likes people who can remain positive despite the bleakness of their situation.
Attribute: None
Abilities: Derrick's skills in combat has been earned through years of fighting, which means that in battle he knows what to do, but tends to stick to what he does best and doesn't improvise very well. He prefers long-range combat since his armor and weaponry ensures he can outgun most threats in the rift, but he's no slouch in melee either. Reliant entirely on his weapons to do any damage as he has little to no martial skill, just a lot of power to put behind his attacks. He's also got an excellent situational awareness that allows him to easily notice things even in pitch combat, making him very good at spotting ambushes or sneaky enemies.
Skills: Derrick has some rudimentary medical skills from his experience in the Rift, as well as knowledge on how to make camouflage or cover if given the time. He's a decent driver and actually knows how to operate most land-based vehicles. His sharp senses and eye for detail also allows him to act as a tracker and watchman. Finally the one piece of training he's had taught him how to life off only three hours of sleep. While he still needs a regular amount of time to rest injuries, three hours is all he needs for a full night's rest.
History: The details of Derrick's upbringing is irreverent. For the longest time he was a normal kid with normal problems, a normal family, and normal aspirations. He wanted to become an airplane engineer like his father, working on those magnificent flying machines and making good money from it. But when he was in college, he made one mistake that took away his normal life. And it all started when he and some of his college friends discovered a Rift. It was unexplored and seemingly harmless; nothing but nature and sunlight. If it weren't for the existence of the Rift itself, it was almost indistinguishable from their reality. Except when you go through that Rift, there wasn't any people on the other side. It wasn't far from the college dormitory and it seemed small enough to go unnoticed, so it wasn't long before Derrick and his friends used the rift to loot and pillage as they pleased. In the Rift world they could go into the dormitories, which were void of any people, and stole various electronics and goods. They figured that since this was all happening within the Rift it was all theirs for the taking.
It was not the case.
Turns out even if they steal something from the Rift World, the same thing was taken in their real world. The damage they did wasn't carried over, but as soon as they brought those items back to their world, the real world copy vanishes. It wasn't long before police got involved and all it took was one of Derrick's friends being stupid and trying to sell the stolen loot to an undercover cop before the whole operation was blown. They tried to defend themselves by claiming they only took things from the Rift, but when they tried to show the police where the Rift was, it was gone. Thus Derrick and his friends were charged with multiple counts of robbery, stealing up to around $700,000 dollars worth of personal electronics, belongings, and other items. They were arrested and thrown into jail. Derrick's parents couldn't believe what he had done and essentially abandoned him there.
But that wasn't the end of Derrick's fate. While the police sent him to prison, another organization heard about what Derrick had claimed and came to pick him up. They were friendly enough at first; they understood that Derrick and his friends didn't know the real-world ramifications of looting in the Rift and frankly the whole situation seemed bizarre, as Rifts tend to be. This organization was willing to give Derrick a second chance. Desperate for an escape he took this chance, not realizing that it was a trap. This organization intentionally sought out criminals who have experienced crossing through the Rift, and then forcing them to essentially become cannon fodder to explore other Rifts. It was slavery in all but name, since as criminals they didn't have any normal rights, especially not with this organization sullying their names and making them worse than whatever crime they got arrested for. Derrick ended up with some vile reputation as a child murderer just to ensure that no one pitied him as he was forced into bulky, crude, and cheap armor and made to march into Rifts and fight on whoever paid them to die that day.
Derrick could consider himself lucky though. He didn't die. He was afraid, of course, as many like him were. They were just young men and women who made one mistake, happened to have crossed into the Rift at one point, and were not drafted into a slave army. For many the absurdity of the situation never really caught up with them. But Derrick knew that this was going to be his fate now. He was going to have to live with it. So he did what he had to do, fighting and killing, never really getting any treasure or glory for it. At least as his unit was getting more successful in raids, they were given slightly more interesting looking equipment. Onlookers might even think he looked badass. But it was all just for show; the spikes, the emblems, the paint job, it was all just to make a bunch of convicts look like career killers. And it worked.
Other: Derrick is fitted with a collar that keeps track of his movement and spies on him. It's to ensure that he doesn't try and betray anyone, since with a single flick the collar can explode and decapitate him before he could even pull the trigger. Tampering or damaging it can also cause it to explode, so Derrick has to be very mindful about it. It can shock him too if he needs to be punished by his handlers or whoever happened to hire him. Lastly, every week his collar needs to be scanned in by his handlers. If it's not the collar would explode and kill him.
Derrick is part of a mercenary group called Hell's Deep, since they're the guys who you send to Hell first. Derrick is part of the Lost Legion, a collective name for the criminals and convicts forced into cannon fodder roles. They're equipped with a single LMG with one whole box of ammunition; if they run out they'll either need to grab more ammo from their allies or resort to melee weapons. Everyone comes with a machete, and Derrick has been at this long enough to even gain a chainsword. It can tear through most forms of armor, but heavy as hell and hard to hit a nimble target with. His armor is built mainly to look intimidating, as it's made with cheap metals that might be able to stop low caliber bullets, but anything else is just going to shred right through him. Indeed most of his armor was replaced after his old ones got destroyed. At least it's lighter than it looks.
