Fate/Lost Epoch

The year is 2004- more specifically, the eve of Fuyuki's First Holy Grail War. There was not that first war which ended in anticlimax, that second war which ended in blood, that third war which ended in thievery, or that fourth war which ended in curses. The sins of the past are not present here, but neither are their lessons.

There is no overseer from the church, nor are there formal regulations. The founding families of Fuyuki are entrenched, but not almighty. The Holy Grail is untainted, a genuine wishgranting device.

The slate is clean.

Let us see if it stays that way.

This is a Holy Grail War in the style of the one from the backstory of Fate/Grand Order. By that, I mean that it is a timeline where this 2004 war is the first one ever held in Fuyuki, and that it is for an untainted Grail.

To explain the basics if you're unfamiliar, a Holy Grail War is a battle for a magical wishgranting device, where mages called Masters summon Servants (incarnations of legendary figures) as familiars. These Servants are summoned in 'classes' which determine things like the weapons they use and the kinds of abilities they have.

Exactly how things play out will depend on how many people display interest. If we only have around seven players, then it will probably be a more normal affair where we have one of each class, but if there's enough interest then I'm happy to expand things appropriately. I will also be considering allowing classes that aren't the usual seven, (Avenger, Ruler, Gatekeeper, Gunner, Strategist, and Saver) if that is something people would be interested in, so don't hesitate to make your feelings known.

I'm of course available for any other questions you might have.

Character Sheets

Helpful Information

I said this in the rules, but just to be extra clear, this roleplay will contain mature themes such as violence and death, so it isn't for all players. Please only state interest if you're okay with those sorts of things being present.

Potential interest!

Kinda curious btw, but since you mentioned unusual classes, are things like Foreigner or Faker allowed as well? Didn't see them on the list, so just wondering.

Happy to hear it!

I actually totally forgot about Faker. I'm fine with allowing it if people are interested, since I remember seeing that we just got a stat sheet for Faker from Case Files Grace Note! I think it's a little unclear on how you qualify for it (if someone has a source for that then I'd appreciate it a lot!), though, so I'd want to talk about specifics if you want to apply for that.

Foreigner's always been a little bit of a weird case for me, since it doesn't seem like the kind of class that's really naturally summonable given the ones we've seen so far and all of them having weird Grand-Order-plot-related situations going on. I don't want to say I'm banning it outright, but I'll probably be pretty hesitant on it and want to urge people to consider other classes that can do similar things, like Caster. If you have an idea that absolutely only works as Foreigner, though, I'm open to talking about it, but I'll honestly be pretty hesitant.

Tentative interest.

If possible, I'd like to pick up a Lancer position. If not a Lancer, then a Caster.

Got some interesting ideas, for both.

Gunnar of Hlidarendi - Lancer

Alice of Schaerbeek - Caster

Sorry if I am getting ahead of myself. Got a few Master ideas, too. Just figured I shouldn't go overboard.

Quick Edit: I don't mind playing Master for someone else's Servant and vice-versa.

Second Edit: Not super familiar with the Classes mentioned up top. Will look into them.

I have some ideas for masters and servants, so consider me interested. At the moment, I have something for just about any class, so I'm flexible depending on what other people want to play.

Okay, great!

@Sleip

Sounds good! I'll just make a little collapse in the OP to indicate how many Servants per class people are thinking of making. Just as a note to everyone, this isn't claiming a spot or anything like that, I'll explain that in the collapse.

Edit: I'll also add a little blurb about the classes in a moment!

Oh, Faker's class skills are pretty cool. As for Foreigner, RIP. Guess I'll bench my Caligula for another RP. Looking at the classes again, I might just go ahead and run a Saber I've been meaning to play, though one of the Extra classes is still on the table if they don't get swarmed...

That said, seeing that Ruler is a playable Servant, how will they be handled in this roleplay given their particular skillset? Will they be summoned as a competing Servant, or will the player fill the role of moderator?

Alrighty, I'll put you down as Saber for now, then!

So, I was thinking of using an 'Exceptional Benefit' system like I've seen in a couple of roleplays, since that feels like a pretty cool way of giving every Master their own special flair. Basically, every Master will have their own special edge coming in, like a special Mystic Code or prep time in Fuyuki before the war starts.

I'm not decided on this, but for Ruler, I'll probably be using an NPC Ruler myself if we wind up getting more people- in that case, a player Ruler would either be working for him (they'd basically be working as a pseudo-NPC), or I'll let a Master summon them by cheating the system as their Exceptional Benefit. If it's the latter, though, I'll probably be capping the Ruler Command Spells at one-per-Servant.

If people have suggestions, I'm open to them though!

Tentative interest from me, I might be ready to try a Fate RP again. I have ideas for... a Berserker/Avenger/maaaaybe Caster. Berserker first choice I think. And of course I'm happy to also play a master.

I'm interested as well.

I have a few ideas for just about everything in the main Classes as well as a few Masters hanging about that I can pull for this one. However, before I commit to a concept, I'd like to know what kind of Servants you'll be allowing in, @Mr President?

Like, I'm more specifically interested in what power level you are looking for, whether or not we can pick Servants hailing from the Far East, and or what alternate versions of any Servant may be available. For example, which one between Arthur and Artoria was the King Arthur of this world? What version of Musashi existed in this world? Is someone on the level of Heracles and above allowed in this? Things like that. Just general ideas to narrow out my choices.

@Yankee Okay, great!

@KoL Great questions! I'll just address each of them individually.

Eastern heroes and anti-heroes are both allowed.

For King Arthur, I'm fine with allowing either Artoria or Arthur, but not both, so that would depend on which one someone wants to apply (someone using Arthur would lock another player from using Artoria later, and vice versa).

For Musashi, the case there is something I'd rather avoid since girl Musashi really shouldn't be summonable and has some indeterminate stuff I don't want to touch, and guy Musashi's in a weird spot as well due to being largely incomplete. If someone really, really wants to play them, I'm open to at least talking about it, but like with Foreigners, I am pretty iffy and would really prefer you look elsewhere.

I have no issues with powerful Servants usually, since I think they're kind of self-balancing. If someone applies Heracles, for instance, unless you're confident you can beat him one-on-one (unlikely), you'd probably respond by trying to make a coalition of everyone else to focus on getting him out of the way first, so the rest of you can fight one another without that worry. With that said, I do think there's an upper limit of Servants that I'd rather not touch because they give such a huge advantage even with the factor of coalitions. Gilgamesh is the most egregious example, but Ozymandias and a non-Berserker Heracles would also be on the list.

Sounds good! I'm a little busy with new years stuff today, but a character sheet should be up by tomorrow!

Edit: Since I had some questions in PMs about class skills, especially for the Extra classes, I've added little blurbs on what each class skill does to the Servant Classes collapse.

@Mr President I really like that you provide a lot of information and so far seem to be pretty compromising and friendly

I have a question for you regarding parameters. I have seen a lot of interpretations of how parameters work...

...so I am curious to know how you will approach this?

I'm interested in this as well. I'll tentatively put myself forward for an Assassin at the moment, but that depends on whether the person I have in mind works out or not.

If all else fails I have several other sheets on hand for whatever classes are available.

@Yankee So, this is actually a really good question, thanks for asking that.

For two 'normal' ranks, like A and B, I always see them as rough gauges rather than absolute statements. Not every Servant with B Strength will be 100% equal in an arm-wrestle, for instance. And at the same time, if you're really low on energy, it might be possible for you to lose an arm-wrestle to someone that your parameters say you're stronger than.

Also, we see in canon that the parameters are inclusive of a few different things. For instance, Agility includes dexterity, but also movement speed (Kojiro from Fate/Stay Night has higher Agility than Cu Chulainn, but Cu Chulainn is faster). So it's possible for a Servant to have sky-high Agility, but that refers largely to their dexterity and their movement speed is actually pretty low, like with Kojiro.

This is a bit of a messy system, but the way I think I'm going to handle it is by treating the parameters as those rough guidelines, but as generally pretty 'fixed'. If a Servant with higher strength gets into a direct physical clash with another, the former will win. With Agility specifically, I'll also be using the classes as a way of deciding movement speed (we know Lancers are generally faster, for example, so in a foot race, a Lancer could beat another Servant with equal or even higher Agility).

If a Servant is injured or otherwise not in top performance, that'll be a little different and I'll decide things like that more case-by-case, since it's hard to make hard rules for something so situational.

For + and -, we actually know what they mean in canon!

So, a + on parameters means that usually your parameter's the base rank, but in set circumstances, it can go higher for a moment. For example, Mordred's B+ strength means her strength is usually B (which has a value of 40), but when she bursts really hard, she can double that to 80 for a moment. With skills and Noble Phantasms, it's kind of similar, but instead of being instantaneous, the +s are more like conditions. For instance, Semiramis has C+ Presence Concealment, which means that her usual Presence Concealment is just C, but the + lets her stay concealed even when she's poisoning stuff. Or if you had a Servant with B+ Item Construction who specializes in making swords, then you could say that your usual ability is B, but when you're making swords, the + is active and it's actually above even A rank.

A - is a little easier to explain. It means that in terms of 'rank' you're at that level, but it's kind of unstable, and in practice it's usually a little below that rank or maybe even one full rank lower. For instance, Mordred has C- Charisma, and can only show her full potential in a rebellion. That means if she's leading a rebellion, she has C Charisma, but if she's not, then it's actually a little below C or closer to D rank.

This is all a little long-winded, but I hope that helps clear things up!

@King Cosmos Got it!

@Mr President That was perfect, thanks. About EX-level things though - are you considering them a tier higher than A or something hard to quantify? I only ask not because I want to make a super strong servant, but the concept I have in mind might be a little fucky in true Fate-fashion, so I'd like to know if "EX" is acceptable.

@Yankee A little bit of column A and a little bit of column B. My understanding is hat EX means a sort of exception value that can't be contained by the usual ranking system. That means that it's classified like that because it's weird and doesn't play well with the ranks at some level, but at the same time, if something's able to be classified like that, it's probably going to be pretty up there as opposed to being equal to an E rank ability.

I'd recommend staying away from EX parameters unless you think it's really well-justified, but I'll be much more open to EX skills and, to a slightly lesser extent, Noble Phantasms.
