Nation: Liberia
Leader: President William R. Tolbert, Jr
History: The Republic of Liberia is a ex-privately funded colony of freed African-American slaves from the United States and England, long time backed by the United States to keep its independence from the colonial superpowers. Since the end of the Great War, Liberia has been in a precarious position. Completely surrounded by France and England, and now Spain, has left its government on edge. The lack of American support in more recent years have done little to calm their fears. In an attempt to secure them selves, Liberia turned to France and England for support in 1958, which were both declined. Liberia was now alone on a continent of Superpowers(and Ethiopia). In an attempt to promote internal stability, President Tolbert proposed a new law, The Shanniquelle Charter, which enforced the native people of Liberia's equality with the Americo-Liberian minority that had ruled the country since it's inception. The natives, who had been fighting for this for a long time, accepted the law. Even prominent members of the Kru and Kpelle groups vocalized their support for the charter, saying "This is a step forward for our people, finally in a country where we do the work, we get recognized and respected for it."
However, the Americo-Liberians hardly enforced the law, despite Tolbert urging them to do so. Only a few small towns and segments of Monrovia currently enforce the law, and most of the time its only partially.
Tolbert has also increasingly opened Liberia up for foreign investment, attracting companies in Sweden and the Netherlands, and even Brazil to start low-level construction and infrastructure improvements, as well as increasing Liberia's archaic power grid. Swedish Company 'Sandvik Coromant' set up a large mine near Mt. Tokade, employing Liberian workers to work the mine for the iron ore deposits. Liberia also has large rubber production potential, but since the shutdown of Firestone in Liberia, Rubber production has been taken over by small scale Dutch companies, having left Indonesia for Liberia.
So in the end, I changed the history a bit, not anything to make Liberia stronger, just to make Liberia's current economy a bit weaker but yet more reasonable. Anything you guys think I should fix/change?
