The fight was over before it'd even begin, torn apart by a pillar of frozen death. A burst of healing energy from one'a the chumps they'd rescued ran through Graves' shoulder: bones were set, tendons reattached, skin stretched and scarred over. And the pain dulled in a wave of foreign adrenaline.

Over too quickly. No time to savor. Irritation.

"Couldn't start with that?" Graves grumbled to Alja as she went to check on the lowbies. He regretted his tone even as he said it.

Fate would deem it the last thing he'd say to her. A rumbling like the growl of a giant filled the tunnels. It may have started distant, quiet, but it grew cacophonous in just a matter of seconds. Somebody was shouting but their voice was lost in the storm of onrushing water. No time to get out of the way. No time to haul ass to one of the side tunnels. Just long enough to stare ahead and wonder where it would sweep him away. He'd drown, right? Drown in shit water and wake up in his shitty apartment just long enough to go brain dead? It was kind of a hilarious image... in a macabre, terrifying sorta way.

Take in one last breath. Turn bad shoulder into the water- already fucked anyway. Shut eyes, tuck chin to chest. All he had time to do before he felt it slam into him. Water moving that fast was less like a liquid and closer to a concrete wall. It knocked all the air out of his lungs in an instant. His shoulder dislocated again. Feet left the ground, and he was spinning. Dragged backward for several seconds before he felt his weight jerked downward by something else- gravity. Free fall into the unknown.

A disgusting rush of sewer water filled his mouth just as everything went black.

Alja opened her mouth to throw a snarky remark back at Graves for his criticism of the way she'd handled the fight—some of us are trying not to use too much magic so we don't burn ourselves out, vampire boy, or something like that—but...no time. There was no time. The sound began as a distant gurgle, but swiftly filled her ears, and she only recognized a moment before she saw it what it was.

Shit.

She estimated she only had a few seconds before the water hit her. Really, she was lucky she was taking care of the newbies; it put her much farther from the looming tide. It had already swept past Rael and Graves, carrying them towards her all too quickly. She had no time to grab them before the water would be on her as well. So instead, she grabbed the hands of two of the lowbies, running as fast as she could towards the precipice and hoping the rest would follow her. Stomping her foot one last time, she accreted a narrow platform of ice beneath the drop-off, where with any luck the fast-moving water wouldn't strike with full force, and nearly tossed Yasmin and the white haired girl at it. "GO!" With any luck, they'd get down there in time, and with any luck, it'd hold. That done, she turned back to the wall of water now only feet from her. No time for anything else.

Unless...

She couldn't see Rael through the swampy, shitty water, but there was Graves, careening towards her. He'd been knocked head over ass, and she sucked in a breath. He'd have a hard landing. But she...

She poised herself on the edge and sucked in a final deep breath, everything in her screaming to not do what she was about to do. Then, as Graves was hurled past her, she threw herself at him, locking him in her armored embrace as they fell towards the water beneath. She hoped for just a moment that he was conscious, or if not, that he regained consciousness soon. And then, as she plummeted towards the water, she breathed in. And she Stood Firm.

Her vision flickered into shades of gray and her eyes followed suit, burning with a terrible monochrome light. She turned her head—the limit of the movement that Stand Firm permitted—and counted the seconds down until she hit the water. With any luck, she'd absorb enough of the impact for Graves to walk it off. Looked like there was a ramp at the edge there that she could haul him out from. Least one thing was going right. If it had just been a cistern with no edge, she probably would've been sunk. Figuratively and literally.

3...
2...
1...

She closed her eyes.

Zero.

The sound of the impact was tremendous as she shattered the surface of the water. Her Stand Firm broke, and she gagged as the cascade of shit-water pummeled her into the lake, squirming into her mouth and filling it with the taste of sewage. She screwed her eyes shut tighter as she forced herself to move forwards with Graves still gripped tightly to her chest, blindly kicking even as she sank deeper. Her lungs began to feel the pressure, and there was nothing beneath her still as her armor dragged her down into the filthy pool. Then the arms that wrapped Graves—still limp, and Alja feared the worst—bumped into something.

There!

Slogging through the sewer water, she hauled herself up the broad ramp one agonizing step at a time until she placed Graves (unconscious for sure) on his back on the relatively safe stone next to the pool, fighting the urge to collapse as she checked him, tilting back his head and neck. A thin stream of rancid water leaked from his mouth.

Oh thank God. He's breathing.

She sat heavily next to him, thankful that she wouldn't need to give emergency breaths to Graves of all people. That sounded embarrassing for both of them.

Alex gave a stiff wave to the wayfarer ahead of him, only to realize the greeting had been meant for Seele. It hadn't been the first time this happened. With his tongue nervously clamped between his teeth, he hoped no one noticed again. He'd done a decent enough job at making an impression on the rest of the wayfarers and denizens, so it didn't bother him after the fact. He was the sort of person people approached for idle chatter and a pleasant evening rather than any serious advice or consolation, so he didn't have much experience with the members of their faction that wore the more concerning expressions on their face.

He followed Seele toward the attendant, taking in the sea of yawns, bad posture, and unkempt clothing. As he saw tired faces on some of the more particularly imposing wayfarers, his quip about bad habits rang in his mind. These were now human beings with human flaws, not only failing to keep themselves presentable or sleep properly but having to deal with circumstances that threatened both of those things on a daily basis. He couldn't feel anything but sympathy for them.

"Good morning!" said Alex. His voice trailed behind hers, focus diverted to a particularly nasty tear in some woman's cape. He'd no doubt be end up doing repairs again in the event their workload didn't involve any travel.

The rain fell hard tonight. It drummed against the old pickup's roof, loud and barking and never ceasing. Started hours ago and hadn't let up since, even into the dead of night. Driving in this- in pitch black- was anxiety inducing. Made his heart beat to the falling of the rain. Drenched him in sweat as much as water. Misery. Irritation. This shouldn't be on him- shouldn't be his responsibility. First bell would sound in less than six hours and Andrew hadn't gotten a lick of sleep yet.

Roads this far outta town were either gravel or dirt, and the latter was nothing but mud pits at the moment. Made getting out here a royal pain in the ass, but he'd finally done it. He pulled into a poor excuse for a parking lot where a dozen other cars already lingered. Through his water-logged windshield he could just make out the shape of the warehouse, and the glow of multi-colored lights from inside. Even outside in the rain and thunder he could hear the muffled beat of music. This was definitely the place.

Slinging a ratty jacket over his shoulders Andrew slid outside, instantly soaked. Jog up to the front door. A handful of people were standing under a makeshift awning of old pipes and layered tarps. The largest of them- a boy several inches shorter than Andy but twice as large- cocked his head at Andrew's approach. They argued for five minutes before Andrew finally drew twenty bucks of gas money from his pocket and slapped it into the bouncer's palm, shoulder-checking him on his way inside.

No time for this. Shouldn't even be here.

Warehouse is packed to the brim with people. Can't even walk without slithering through sweat-soaked, half-dressed bodies. It stinks of sweat and too much cologne. Music is thumping in his skull- too loud, can't think straight. How was he supposed to find his brother in this packed sardine can? Why should he even have to?

If William wants to waste his life why should Andrew stop him? Nobody else was going to. Nobody else cared enough to now that Anna was out of the picture. Maybe they had the right of it. Maybe he outta turn his ass around and let Will drown in his own mistakes.

Feel something splash against his head. Look up, nothing. Roof looks fine. Why was he still getting wet? Try to keep moving. Legs getting heavier. Pain splaying through his body down to his fingers. Head starts to spin. Faces become distorted, unrecognizable.

'Wait...'

Someone was calling out to him. Voice was familiar, but that didn't make sense. That wasn't supposed to happen- that wasn't how this memory goes. Sharp pain in the back of his head. Something building up in his throat.

'I'm...somewhere else.'

Feet give out. Hit the floor, hard. Vomit comes crawling out of his throat. Tastes like sewer water.

Graves's eyes shoot open, a splurge of bile and water spilling from his gullet. He let out a groan, rolling onto his belly. Blink the shit from his eyes. Get a handle on the situation. They were somewhere else now, though still in the sewers. Somewhere lower in that labyrinth if he were to take a wild guess. Alja was splayed out on the ground next to him, as exhausted and soaked as he was.

'Guess you're the reason I'm still breathin'.' He mused to himself, thankful it wasn't someone more unbearable. Push himself up onto his knees, take a moment to breathe. Gotta get his bearings. His arm felt like shit again. Looked like his sword had gotten lost in the flood. Shit. Rael was nowhere to be seen. Those kids and Kalie were gone, too.

"Any idea where we are?" Graves asked between sputtered coughs.

Good. Graves was okay. Though she knew that he'd still been breathing, she'd still been concerned; he could've stopped at any moment. Sighing, Alja hauled herself to one knee, pointing up towards where they'd been previously. She couldn't see past the water; no Rael, and she had no idea whether or not the kids had actually made it to her ice platform. Either way, the platform was gone now, she could tell; she hoped their landing had been better than Graves' would've been.

"We're not too far off from where we were. Got washed off that ledge, ended up down here. 'S a big cistern. Guess most of the sewers end up comin' through here sometime. Haven't seen Rael or Kalie, though. Maybe they found a way to stay up there? They're both pretty good at gettin' out of the way of stuff like that. Hope they did, at least."

She turned back to Graves as he puked up the sewer water. He didn't look so great; her face quirked into a worried frown. "You hurt? Tried to shield you best I could, but can't be sure, y'know?" She wearily lifted herself to her feet, walking around him and trying to see if there were any obvious exposed wounds. None that she could see. His arm looked a little messed up, but it was already like that. So no real injuries...Her eyes widened for a second.

"Ah, shit, your sword." She huffed out a breath, then reached into her belt and pulled out a long knife, placing it next to him. "Sorry it ain't as good as what you're used to, but better than nothin,' right? I'll make you a new sword once we get outta here if we don't find your old one."

Alja was talking but Graves wasn't present. His eyes were glazed over and he was looking out over the cistern, into the pool of swirling water where he'd nearly drowned. That nearly avoided fate wasn't what was on his mind, however; it was where his mind had taken him when he lost consciousness. This wasn't the first time it had happened. Wasn't the first memory he was dropped into.

'Why do I keep goin' back home?'

Home wasn't something he thought of much. That place was better left dead and buried. A mire. It was a mire that trapped him in the muck and kept him from going anywhere. Andrew thought he'd crawled out of it when he got his own place, even if he was still stuck in the same dead end job he'd gotten after high school in the same dead end town that'd taken so much from all of them. He thought he'd buried it and moved on, but ever since the Glitch it'd come back. It had visited him twice, now. Was it back to try and drag him back into the mire once more?

Something metal clattered against the wet stone beside him and Graves jumped out of his skin. "Shit." He breathed, looking down at the knife and then up to Alja. Color rushed to his cheeks. He'd totally forgotten she was standing right there. And she'd just saved his skin, too. Was he really brought so low by a couple'a bad dreams? Shake it off, big man. You've got work to do.

"Sorry, yeah. Thanks." It wasn't much, but any old blade would do for now. He doubted there'd be much more need anyway; that rat must've been the mother. Too big not to be. That did leave the question of where her nest had been, though, as they hadn't seen head nor tail of it in all their time down here. Wasn't looking forward to keeping up the search- he'd had just about enough of this place.

"You, uh...didn't have to do that." He sniffled. "Thanks for stickin' your neck out for me. Lotta people wouldn't do that."

Whoa.

For just a moment, Alja stared at Graves, this aggressive titan of a man who wielded blood just as fluidly as his absent sword. The hint of a smile crossed her face before she crushed it down; it wouldn't be good for Graves right now if she did what she wanted desperately to do. Because what she wanted to do was laugh. Laugh a lot. Because she had never, in her wildest dreams, thought that Graves could ever be so...so...so adorable. She wanted to laugh at the absurdity of the situation. She wanted to hug him, get him some warm milk or tea or something, and tuck him in to bed where he was safe.

But no. Graves didn't need anybody laughing at him right now. There was nowhere to tuck him in, and she got the feeling that if she hugged him, he'd punch her. So no, no overdramatic displays of emotion. Still, though, she was glad that he was opening up to her. His emotions had always been a bit of a mystery to Alja, and his past just as much. She knew basically nothing about the man behind the mask, and now that, perhaps, he was beginning to peek out, the last thing she wanted to do was to punt him right back down there by laughing at him. Perhaps it wouldn't have been important before, but the more they knew about each other now, the safer they were.

So instead, she kept it to a bare smile, one that could be dismissed if she needed to, and sat back down next to him, her breaths still coming harsh and heavy, though they were beginning to slow.

"Then a lotta people are idiots. We gotta stick together. And you're a good man, Graves. I'll be damned if I let you go down while I've still got breath in me."

As Alja sat down beside him Graves began to squirm, as if a swarm of spiders had crawled inside his clothes. The two of them were stuck down here for the time being, utterly alone, and she was feeling talkative. He'd rather be fighting dire rats waist deep in sewage.

"Dunno 'bout all that," he muttered, avoiding eye contact.

They were kind words meant in earnest. He knew that. He knew she wore her heart on her sleeve, never bothering to lie to anyone about anything- except maybe herself. That mouth of hers had caused her to butt heads with near every single one of their friends. Her ability to speak her mind so freely was one of the many things he envied about her. It was funny to think back to when they'd first met way back in the Laughing Worg- he'd thought she was just a loud, braggadocious bag of air. Obnoxious, maybe, but harmless. Strange how quickly things had changed. Stranger still how they stayed the same.

If Alja had said that to him back then he would've shrugged her off with a sharp word and a sneer. It was easy to make an ass of himself to strangers. Kept them from getting too familiar when they'd only be together for a short time. The Glitch had forced them to stay together. Forced him to give a shit about her and everybody else. Some days he wished it hadn't- if it had, he wouldn't feel obligated to have fun little chats like this one.

After a too long silence he finally turned to look at her. He smiled, though it was a small, bittersweet thing. "'Ppreciate it, Alja...Kelly, I really do. Couldn't ask for a better, uh, friend." He paused, wondering if it'd be better to just leave it there. Let her go on thinking that was all he had on his mind. But she deserved better than half-truths. "But you oughta look out for yourself first n' foremost, okay? Can't go throwing yourself off a cliff for me like that. Got too much to lose. You got a whole lotta life ahead of you: a degree to get, a girl you're head over heels for, and a family to go back to. A...a lotta people would give everything for that, so don't you throw it away, alright?"

A blush came to Alja's face as Graves spoke, and her eyes widened. Wha—Oh, it was when we were drunk, wasn't it...? Bah! No time for that right now! Not important!

She took a deep breath in, putting all thoughts of...of—she nearly put her head in her hands—Leaves out of her mind. This was not the time, nor was it the place. She stared out at the cistern, pondering what she would say. The sound of the new waterfall hammered at her ears with a heavy shhhhhhh, and she focused on the sound as a means for clearing her mind. There was something viscerally familiar about how Graves was talking. She stared at the water falling for some seconds, cataloguing her thoughts and organizing what she was about to say. Because she knew what Graves was thinking, and if she could do anything about it, then she was going to, damnit.

"Y'know, Graves...I know you." She responded to his bittersweet smile with a worried frown. "I know you a lot better than you think."

She crossed her legs, pulling herself up to a much more upright sitting position and looking at him seriously. "...and I know you a lot better than I wish I did." She held up a hand, forestalling a response and showing she wasn't done before she gave a heavy sigh. "So I know exactly what's goin' through your head right now. You remember back when we were fighting Arnaakus?"

She shook her head. "I ran in like a crazy person. Probably shoulda died. But someone," she laughed a little bit, "jumped in front of the claw. Saved my life. But threw himself into far, far too much danger to save a headcase like me. What kinda girl would I be if I didn't do my best to save you too?"

"And anyway, my life isn't anything special. Not like Leaves is going to reciprocate anyway—I mean, look at me, why would she?—and I'm sure you have people waiting for you too." Her frown changed to a kind, gentle smile, and she grabbed Graves' hand in both of hers, squeezing it tightly. "Graves—" A memory resurfaced from the murk of her drunken night, and stared him dead in the eyes, "—Andrew. You are worth so much more than you let yourself believe."

To his shame Graves recoiled from her touch. Physical affection was an estranged friend showing up at his front door- not wholly unwelcome, but...

"Sorry," he muttered, brought low. "Its just a lot."

It was too sudden, all of it. Too soon? You buried that. Its dealt with. Or maybe shoving it to the back of the closest and trying to forget its there wasn't the same as dealing with it. New and old problems alike came slamming to the forefront of his mind, fighting and screaming for his attention- a confusing cacophony that kept him from the moment. Pressure built, ready to blow.

She knew how he felt? Had she misinterpreted the words he'd left unsaid for something else? It was impossible for him to look at that woman and imagine someone so full of life- so outgoing and self-assured- feeling that way.

"No, you don't- you don't get it." He looked at her again, intensity gleaming in his eyes. "That is special. Every single one of 'em, even the shitty, obnoxious ones. Sure don't feel like it, I know, but it really is." This time he was the one that reached out, squeezing her forearm a little too tight. "You won't understand how important they are until they're gone."

His hand left her. A breath, a pause. Let the heat die from his cheeks and chest. Shift to topic to something easier. "Same thing with Leaves. Its scary as all hell admittin' somethin' like that to a friend. You're terrified they'll turn you away n' never look at you the same way again, but ya can't let that stop you. Its better than spendin' the rest of your life never knowin', askin' what if. You'll regret it."

Regret, regret, regret.

"Leaves is wonderful, Kells. It won't be like other people. She ain't gonna throw her drink in her face and call you a-" Graves caught himself before he turned advice into projecting. "She'll get it either way, y'know? What do ya have to lose when you've got everythin' to gain?"

You don't get it.

What do ya have to lose when you've got everythin' to gain?

Alja laughed.

"Well, glad you think of me that highly. But I'm...I'm not all that, really."

Her eyes fell a little bit. When she spoke again, it was most unlike her: halting and hesitant. "Really, I'm terrible. I promise. Not worth trying to help. Can I...if I told you a story, Graves, would you listen?" She turned away, staring at the cistern, and continued without letting him cut in. "It's about...an Edinburgh girl, and how she became who she is. This—mess of failures and mistakes."

She took one more deep breath. "Once upon a time, in Edinburgh, there was a twelve year old girl." Her face, unseen to Graves, was twisted up tight, holding back as much emotion as she could. Her voice was tight and strained. "She lived with her mother Elaine, her father Connor, and her...her brother. Gavin. He was five years her elder." Her fists clenched tight at her sides, and she lifted them, lifting up her knees and wrapping her arms around them. "This girl loved her parents very much, of course, but it was her brother that she loved the most. He was a super nice guy. Always had time for her. Never too busy to help her with her English homework, or to cut up an apple for this little brat." The last words were spat with absolute venom, and Alja paused a moment to compose herself.

"Then, one day, when their parents were out shoppin', someone came into the house. Gavin peeked out through a door, and a look of horror came onto his face. He shoved her into the closet of the room they shared in their small apartment, locked it, and whispered to her: Whatever you do, Kelly, do NOT come out until I tell you to, okay? He paused. I love you."

A shaky breath, less controlled than before. "So she...so she didn't. She stayed in that closet. And through a crack in the door, I—she—" Her chest began to heave. "—watched as...his...he had a gun, and Gavin—and I didn't—I couldn't—his head—"

And then again, she laughed.

But not her normal laugh this time. Not a nice laugh; a boisterous one, or a gentle one. It was a harsh, grating death-rattle of a sound, filled with scorn and anger.

"I watched—I watched it. I watched him die. And I...I sat in a closet. And I did nothing."

She laughed harder.

She was still laughing when the first tear trickled down her cheeks, opening a little rivulet of clear skin across her filthy face. Then, at some point—she wasn't quite sure when—the laughing gave over to crying. She wept openly, not even trying to wipe the tears away. For the next few minutes, she simply sat there, knees pulled up to her torso, head in her hands. Her chest heaved as sobs wracked it. At some point, the waterfall petered out, leaving a pregnant silence into which she poured her pent-up emotion.

At length, her breath hitched, and her crying shuddered to a halt. She turned her head, smiled lamely at Graves, her eyes still laden. And when she spoke, her voice was quieter, and seemed much younger than before.

"I—I'm sorry..."

Powerless. Useless. Worthless.

And then she was stricken by another set of sobs. She collapsed sideways, clutching Graves' armored shoulder and pressing her forehead to it, and wailed like a lost child.

"I'M SORRY!"

A dull ring sounded in his ears. Muscles tensed. Pens and needles ran along every inch of skin as his perception warped, acutely aware of even the smallest movement. He could hear a bead of sweat run down a forehead, or the distant sound of something small falling into a pool. Could feel every individual beat of his quickening heart. Could smell far too acutely all the muck swirling in the air all around them. Inhale, exhale. Strange, confusing, alarming for this to happen here and now.

It wasn't a pleasant story. He didn't like following little Kelly back to that room. Didn't want to climb into that closest and see what she'd seen. But a poor facsimile of the real thing that it was- how must it have felt for her then? How could one comprehend even a fraction of what she felt then? He couldn't understand. No one could, he understood now. He was but a passenger, waiting to get off at the next stop and never look back. She was stuck on this train. Stuck in this closet.

"Jesus, Kells," he murmured, stupefied.

It struck him how unprepared he was for this. He hadn't a clue how to comfort someone in so much pain. All he was doing was staring like a dumbstruck idiot, arguing with himself whether it was okay to reach out or say anything. He had to think back to every time he'd seen someone else in his position, hoping to mimic what they'd done, but none of it seemed right.

Death wasn't something Grays talked about. They talked in circles around it. If it got too serious somebody made a crass joke about the deceased and they all pretended it was funny before shuffling off to be alone. That just wouldn't do here, chiefly because he had nowhere to retreat to.

This time he didn't flinch away when her head landed on his shoulder. Took all the courage he had, but he did it. Her cries were guttural, drummed up from the depths of her soul. It hurt to hear her like that. Hurt to know what she'd hid away for so long so well. Why was he the one here and not someone better equipped? Seele'd know what to do. She'd tell Alja it was alright, that it wasn't her fault. Say something profound, probably, about how Gavin would be proud of who she was now. She'd hug her for as long as Alja needed. Hell, just about anyone but Rael would do better here than he.

But it wasn't anyone else. He was all she said. An uncomfortably familiar situation, that.

"Hey," he quietly said, reaching an unsure hand 'round to her other shoulder. Chin rested against her head- Anna did that once and he remembered feeling safe. The fuck should he do with his other hand? It was just sitting there, dumb as a rock. Wipe a tear? No, too awkward. Maybe just hug her. It felt wrong, but it was probably the right call.

Gotta say something, too. Clear your throat. Keep it simple, don't overthink it. "You were just'a kid. S'not your fault."

That was the best he could manage. Now all he could do was just...be there, for as long as he was needed.

The flush of water was heavy. Disgusting, too. Rael wasn’t sure if she was going to be able to fight the current that washed away down the massive sewer system.

溺死

She held her breath as best as she could, tightening her grip on two hands. She wasn’t a god. How many people—why was this place built like this? Two different thoughts. Two different questions. There wasn’t a lot of time for it and Rael understood that. She didn’t want to drown in dirty, disgusting sewer water.

溺死

When her breath broke, the taste of it all nearly overwhelmed her. Her brows narrowed, and she pushed upward. Who even knew how to swim anymore? It wasn’t the 20th Century anymore. Water was a precious resource and swimming pools were a luxury. Not that Rael had an issue with luxuries. She was just thankful that she happened to know how to swim and her body in this world was stronger than the one back home. Hanako Moriyama would’ve drowned and not a single person would’ve cared. Weak and nothing. Her parents would only be disappointed that an arranged marriage fell through. The reminder whispered in her brain as she tightened her grip and moved upward as fast and as strong as she could. The enhancement magic coursing through her muscles certainly helped. It helped a great deal.

She looked to her side, left-and-right. At least she got two people. The others were either drowning downstream or washed ashore at some other part of the sewer system. Not much she could do about that.

溺死

The water broke and Rael could breathe again. Finally.

The red-haired Japanese girl was elated when she reached the stone surface. She looked up—Graves and Alja. Good. She’d kill them if they drowned in the muck. She wanted to be cool and appear awesome but all she could do was cough the disgusting, putrid liquid from her throat. The silver-haired girl did the same, but not before casting some kind of magic and the dingy water was purified in an instant. It may have removed any toxins in her system but Rael knew one thing. She’d never forget the taste.

“It'll be okay... it's just... water. Now.”

Rael heard the girl’s voice. The healer’s.

After coughing for what felt like forever, she waved her off. “I’m fine. I’ll be fine.”

There weren't many awful things like what was happening to her right now in Kalie's mind. The sewer got even more disgusting by the deluge of heavy disgusting water. It blindsided everyone in her group, including the other people they went to save.

'Utterly disgusting, blindsided by disgusting shit water of all things. Fucking hell, I am not enjoying this at all.'

She held her breath as the best as she could and feel someone tightening their grip on her hand, which could be Rael's. In the back of Kalie's mind, she was relieved that one of her comrades saved her by holding onto her hand. She didn't want to sigh, though, or it'll allow her to get water in her mouth that was awful tasting. Still, it could be a whole lot worse that would suck, though.

'I don't want to know how that water tastes.'

Kalie had her breath break, which caused a rush of water to enter her mouth. She wanted to get out of the water as quickly as possible, and she pushed upward. Her thoughts were rushing to the time Kalie did go to a YMCA with her parents. Thankfully, she does know how to swim, but in this place, her body was so much more different in certainties. Dawn Sarah Hughes wasn't as good at swimming as Kalie Augustine since the latter has enhancement magic flowing through her body. She kept up with the one who held her hand, thankfully.

Kalie looked over and saw Rael would be the one holding her hand, which gave her a helping hand. Also, she saw the other one that Rael saved too. A reassuring look on her face, but they still have to get out of this hell of water. She was a bit depressed that not many people made it, though.

'Ugh, eww, I will never want to taste that water again. Also, how many baths will I have to take to feel clean again?'

When the water broke, and Kalie could breathe again.

The blonde American girl was ecstatic when Rael helped her up to the stone surface. Kalie saw Graves and Alja at the exact moment as Rael and was happy that they were alive. Other than that, Kalie was so disgusted and couldn't help but cough up the liquid that entered her mouth, which was atrocious. She felt the magic of the healer girl go over her to lessen the nasty effects of the appalling water to be normalized. Kalie would never forget the taste as long as Kalie lived. It's not like she would want to drink shit-tasting water ever.

Kalie heard the healer's voice and couldn't help but kept coughing for a bit. Though, that's when Rael would wave the healer girl off and said I'm fine. "I'm fine too, but I wouldn't want to experience that again in my lifetime." Kalie said. She did wave at Graves and Alja, who were sitting by each other. All the while, Kalie put her left hand to hold onto her right hand because that was a trifling a bit annoying to her.

Alja's head was still on Graves' shoulder, though her tears had faded to hiccuping sobs, by the time the water burst open and Rael came out. Alja jolted, then stood upright, rubbing her eyes furiously to clear them. Tears threatened to spill out again, but she pressed her fingertips into her closed eyes hard. What was she doing? What was she doing? They were trapped deep in the Thorin city sewers, one of their party members was still unaccounted for—wait, never mind, that was Kalie that Rael had just hauled out of the sewer water—and they had three low level players with them. There was no time for her to be bawling her eyes out. She couldn't afford to be useless agai

She cut the thought off. None of that. What she couldn't afford was to be at less than one hundred percent. Her eyes were still swollen and red. On the other side of the cistern, she noticed the two lowbies that she'd put on that ice ledge hauling themselves out on to a small stone ledge and shimmying across it. Good. They'd ended up alright. She waved them over. After they arrived, she did a headcount, then frowned. The fear threatened to swallow her again, but she fought it down. When she first spoke, her voice was thin and reedy from crying, and she coughed self-consciously to clear it, though it still shook slightly. As she spoke, she paced back and forth nervously. Seven steps forward, seven steps back.

"Valena is—ahem—Valena's here, Yasmin's here—" She pointed to the remaining member of the low-leveled party—"'Fraid I haven't made his acquaintance, but he's here. So we're all grouped again. Good. Now, the problem is," she heaved a deep breath, looking around at her surroundings, at the stones dripping with condensation as they led off into yet more sewer tunnels, "we have no idea where we are, we can't get back to where we started, and the monsters' difficulties look like they've been cranked way the hell up. So we need to figure out a way to get outta here, but still keep everybody safe."

She stopped pacing and leaned against the condensation-drenched wall, her voice stabilizing some as she crushed down the rest of her emotions in favor of living to see another day. Her eyes panned over the rest of her significantly expanded party.

"So, any bright ideas? Anybody spent time down here, know the sewers in some way? Anythin' like that?"

Well, that was a close encounter.

The French wayfarer steadied herself as the others did the same. Fortunately, Valena had explored the sewers to a measurable amount so she had some experience about the deeper tunnels and fixtures. Her white brows narrowed as she looked back at the depths she had nearly drowned in. Her staff was in there somewhere and she sighed as Alja began to ask questions. It was good that she had a spell in her disposal so she was not without her weapon.

Recall.

The words murmured in her mind as in a few moments the staff deep in the sewage lake found itself back in Valena's hands.

“It is quite a misérable situation, no?” She uttered as she channeled another purify spell, clearing the staff of any sewage. “I have done some exploring, but it is, erm, not complete. We will be going in half-blind. Though we have little choice.” She turned in the direction to a tunnel heading deeper into the deep sewers, away from the sewage lake. The only way forward was an old tunnel unless suddenly all of them could raise a platform or traverse the way they came. The red-head and blonde were probably the only ones with the skill to jump from point-to-point but the risk of them making a mistake and falling back down was a bit too high for Valena's liking.

“We will have to find the old élévateur.”

“Have you thought about investing in new armor?” The blacksmith inquired with a friendly tone, “Because this looks pretty rough. Fixable, but rough.”

The blacksmith inspected the armor on the table. It wasn’t anything too unique and it could be probably tempered by someone with his lack of specific specializations. It’d take a few days to set in the new metal and leather as well as the huge queue of jobs he had gotten from other wayfarers. It could be done.

“A hundred up front and probably two after it’s finished. Give me three days.”

“Have you thought about investing in new armor?”

Before, Benkei may have actually taken the smith up on that offer. Before all of this, all he’d really thought about and cared about was getting stronger, getting better gear and clearing more content. But now? He had to actually consider his own funds. He could bum off his brother, sure, but how long would that cash last?

”If it’s fixable, then it’s fine.” When he did get a stable income, then he could splurge on things to keep him alive. He handed over the money to the smith, and thanked him, before turning back to Sif.

”That’s one errand out of the way. Let’s make our way back; i’m sure everyone should be coming home from their own errands soon enough.”

Drox Fraternity House, The City-State of Thorinn, Aetheria

“Seele…” The young woman blinked with long shadows underneath her eyes, “…and Alex.”

Taasha looked over the two with some idle curiosity before returning her eyes to the paperwork in front of her. Urgent. The wayfarer was asking for urgency and well, the strangest things had been happening to wayfarers and denizens alike, especially those assigned with Drox. The investigators from the castle hadn’t found any connection between various cases and it had left Erianda furious and Taasha wasn’t one who wanted to be on the receiving end of the fraternity leader’s fury.

“Urgent...” She repeated Seele’s words before sliding the stack of papers over toward the two across the desk counter.

“Take your pick, Seelex. We have missing persons. Wayfarers. Mostly. But some denizens.” She flicked a match on a slab of tinder on the top of her desk, drawing it to a pipe in her mouth as she moved an unkempt bang from her face before blowing out smoke from the pipe. “Investigators from the castle haven’t found any leads. Any connections between any cases. What with your people… sorry, wayfarers, acting out. So many hostile breakdowns.”

The pieces of parchments confirmed what the girl was saying despite her demeanor. Various places in Thorinn, even the exterior villages outside of the city’s walls were having issues finding certain key members of Drox. Mostly wayfarers who were vocationally spellcasters or thieves. The quickest assumption was to make was the thieves acted out and ended up in a unmarked grave, but spellcasters? They made big statements when having panic attacks. The missing denizens who were affiliated that were missing were people Seele had dealt with before, but nobody that could be described as a ‘main character’. Though that was thinking of it like a game. It’d take weeks, maybe months to investigate every lead in the papers. If Seele had a keen eye she’d notice the wayfarer disappearances seemed to start a few days after the glitch and that disappearances exponentially increased, albeit subtly from there. With denizens there was no such pattern.

“It’s a lot, isn’t it? Anyway, whatever you decide I hope you are more successful than the others. Personally, it’s a bit foreboding, hm?”

Seele balked momentarily at the stack Taasha slid to them, but quick enough that hesitation was snuffed. She and Alex had offered to help, they wouldn’t back down now that it was needed. That wasn’t the Drox way and it wasn’t hers, either.

Still, missing persons. This was serious, more serious than any mundane errand she’d ever run for the fraternity. She decided to quell the urge to theorize, and instead listened while Taasha explained the situation, absently flipping through the pages. Reports, testimonials, witness statements that were too short to be first-hand. She blanched when she came to the names.

These were people she knew. no one’s … coming …

Not well, really, not like her current party. But some she knew from around the fraternity, others she had met in guild halls or in the training grounds. Some she had even run dungeons with. These were, at least in part, skilled wayfarers who had taken on some of Pariah’s tougher content and come out on the other side. And they’d all gone missing? Many of the denizens she knew as well, simple, pleasant characters mostly, but others among the list were higher up in the fraternity’s chain of command. She wondered if some of these denizens could even be replaced.

“It’s a lot, isn’t it? Anyway, whatever you decide I hope you are more successful than the others. Personally, it’s a bit foreboding, hm?”

“Certainly,” she said, still browsing. Now that Taasha was finished, Seele went ahead and dabbled with her options.

There was a clear and rising bias in the disappearances for wayfarers since the glitch. Unfortunately that didn’t tell her much about the denizens, except that their disappearances were simple happenstance, which she doubted, or that whatever was behind the disappearances had shifted its focus away from them.

Taasha had said investigators found no leads or connections, but already Seele was seeing a plain pattern between victims—victims? That seemed too pessimistic. Casters and thieves. The explanation for the thieves was simple if bleak, but the casters? The stereotype would have been that they were easier to get the best of compared to someone martial like, say, Alja, or Graves, but anyone who had been in Pariah for more than a few minutes would know that even a novice pyromancer or middling thaumaturge could be explosively dangerous. You’d have a better chance with healers and supports, sure, but there wasn’t really a way to know one sort of caster from another until you actually saw them in action.

Or, perhaps, if you already knew who they were.

No connection amongst the disappeared except for the fact that they were all in Thorinn. That didn’t say much about them, but it might just say a bit more about the perpetrator. The theories that came to her then were darker, more sinister, and made her queasy, though perhaps that was the effects of her friend’s fatigue-charm wearing away. Not a pleasing thought, either.
… missy it’s late …
Seele gathered the most relevant, useful papers pertaining to the wayfarers who had gone missing after the glitch. It saddened her that there wasn’t much to go on for helping the missing denizens, but hopefully the two vanishings were related, and finding one group would also lead them to the other. Still, even cutting down on the amount, it was a lot of work for two people.

It was a lot less work for eight.

Seele shot the tired attendant an undaunted smile. “Don’t you worry, we’ll get right to the bottom of this, and have those people back in no time!” she said, stuffing some of the papers away within the manifold layers of her robe, and handing others to Alex. “Make sure you’re not walking around alone, alright Taasha? You’re a peach, this whole hall would just fall apart without you.”

With that, she whirled on heels to Alex, then nodded back towards the way they’d come. “We’ve got our case then. Lets head back to the tavern, see if we can’t rope in some extra hands to help us out, ah?”

As the pair left the fraternity hall behind, Seele thumbed at the pages in her robes. For the first time in days, her mind felt like it was actually working again, and working fast. How long that would last, she didn’t know, so while the spark was there she cupped it, held it close, stoked it as best she could.

Already plans were forming.

A somber moment between friends ended abruptly as Graves jerked away. His attention shifted fully toward the tumultuous waters beneath them. Something was moving under there. It wasn't visible to the naked eye, but he could feel it: the hairs on his arms stood on end, his vision filled with black dots, and the rhythm of his heart beat louder and louder until everything else was drowned out. Three people, harrowed but alive. One of them was dragging the other two along on a mad dash toward the surface. It boggled his mind that someone would even attempt that sort of rescue, let alone get this far. He shoved his hands into the water, grabbing the lead swimmer, and hauled them up onto the stony surface.

"Rael?!" Graves asked, bewildered, even as he helped her and then Kalie and Valena find their footing. They were all positively disgusting, yet alive. He couldn't ask for more than that.

A rush of conflicting emotions hit him like a wall of sewage. Glad to see them safe. Angry as hell that Rael had nearly killed herself saving those two. Guilt at not having tried to do the same. Alja had shaken herself out of her pained stupor and gotten to work rallying everyone, trying to make sense of their situation and find a way out of it. A good idea, but he said nothing. He couldn't get himself to focus on practicality at the moment.

After hesitating a beat, he decided to cross over to where Rael was standing, still recovering from her misadventure. "Hey," he whispered harshly, trying to contain his volume as to not interrupt the other conversation. "What the hell was that, you goddamned moron? You tryin' to die playin' hero? I thought you were-" He caught himself before continuing, swallowing the worst of his impulses. He didn't meant to berate. Didn't mean to lecture. It was hard to communicate what he did mean- maybe he didn't know what he meant at all. "I'm...glad you're okay. Stay okay."
