Carmillia Carbonneau

Place(s): Near the southern border of Ersand'Enise, Ersand'Enise Student Dorms

Flavius Cueller could only gawk at the ongoing battle happening before his very eyes. After recovering his bearings, he had planned on aiding the Tan Keoulian girl. His plan was to stay hidden and save the day at the last moment. It had sounded solid in his head and would wash away the unease the man in the white mask had given him. His honor would be restored.

But... this?

It was out of his league.

It was clear the girl had not shown her true skills against the fodder earlier. Earlier, he believed her to simply be a gifted student. Now? Her battle prowess indicated years of training and combat experience. She was strong... which meant her opponent that could afford to fool around whilst fighting her was a whole other beast. He was wearing a mask as well.

In the end, Flavius found himself unable to enter the fray and was left watching on the sidelines. He breathed a sigh of relief when the cavalry finally arrived.

Carmillia flicked open the letter. Its contents contained the new student groupings.

'Eventful' as a term didn't seem apt enough to describe the previous night. She hadn't needed Bernhard to update her. The rumors had spread like wildfire. King Rouis had not been the only one. Assasination attempts were made on King Jobanzaggah and Horik as well. Only the latter had survived. Of the student casualties, Carmillia recognized several names. Of those, two stood out. Jomurr was gravely injured but alive, thankfully. It would have been a waste otherwise. Anesin Bjelke was dead. She was one of the ones Carmillia kept tabs on. She was the one who led the Eskandish students during the parade. A young woman of influence.

"Death treats all equally," she said to no one in particular. It didn't matter if you were a royal or a noble.

She returned her gaze back to the student groupings. No doubt due to the dead, a shuffling was in order. Her Biro group had already been short one due to Illanaq so this was already inevitable. Jomurr was no longer part of their group but what was odd was that Carmillia was expecting him to be on medical leave. Instead, he was now under Zeno Mozaru. She was still with Leon alongside Onarr and... Penny?. That would prove amusing. Their Zeno had been replaced by Zeno Sienna Afraval.

Flavius' update when she returned to Ersand'Enise was concerning. He had lacked his usual arrogance when recounting his perspective. Two men in masks... and they possessed unnatural power. The Ten Hidden Faces. Legendary Assassins.

She folded the note and placed it by her bedside and went to change. Classes were cancelled. That meant it was time for work. She could ruminate over these things after.

For now, she needed to pay Jomurr a visit.

Location: The northern border of Ersand'Enise -> Back to school

Interactions: Karim Nazeri @Theyra, and everyone else @Force and Fury

Desmond fought and noticed the battlefield change. As magics were thrown he dedicated some of his time to stoke the flames of other people's magic to burn the trees away allowing for clear shots. As Desmond shifted on his horse, he fired a shot quickly that knocked one of the assassins out of the tree. Desmond immediately switched his attention to his other side where he saw another assassin in the trees, there he pulled his smaller firearm and took aim as he fired another shot, burying a bullet into the sternum of the assassin before they fell. Desmond's eyes were constantly moving and shifting from target to target as electricity coated his guns and multiple bullets that seem to be floating around him. As after each gun fired, a piece of ammunition began floating up to the barrel of the gun and sliding down the barrel, and seating itself into the gun. Allowing Desmond to always be able to fire his guns in a more consistent stream, as the roar of his guns disappeared once this horrid feeling befell Desmond.

This feeling felt like death loomed over him like a hanging guillotine, it was a feeling he felt a few times. Most of the time it was from when a mage took notice of him and tried to kill him, or when he was in the sights of a Magusjeager. As intense winds seem to blow and snuff out the intense fires they created and even blew the mountain of a man Eskand calls a King off his feet and away. Desmond began looking around as someone appeared near and seemed to try and talk to him. She began talking about how they moved it seemed like they were moving in a strange way like they knew how to do so without ever even communicating. They needed to find this person and take them out while King Horik was in his own duel. Desmond agreed with Marlijn, he noticed it as once they started moving he noticed multiple mages move in unison. He looked to Marlijn and said, "You're right, we need to find this person…".

Yet still, Desmond still had this incredibly horrid feeling in the back of his neck. Like something was coming, as when he watched the quick bout that occurred between King Horik and this new Mage it reached an unbearable level of uncomfortability. He already began drawing in energy as he could and manipulating it to formulate kinetic energy, forming it again to a more concentrated form to manipulate the energy to form something akin to a coating around his body of kinetic energy. When Desmond noticed the build-up of mana, a yell occurred from Marijn, and Desmond immediately started moving. Yet as he ran, he noticed multiple people on the ground in shock or unconscious, and almost as his body moved on its own, he jumped off of his horse as it continued to run forward. As once he landed he began drawing a bit more energy to figure out where the attack was coming from, as he faced the very explosion that was to occur. Desmond pointed his gun to the sky and fired his gun, as once the explosion went off, Desmond used the energy he had built up and magnified and propelled the energy to the maximum it could, giving a directional explosion against the impending explosion, in hopes to make the force of the explosion become something akin to a small shield of explosive force.

As once the explosions hit each other, Desmond drew as much energy he could in this small window of time, he knew he was going to gas himself out fast if he did this in such a short period of time. Expending his maximum energy and then immediately tried to draw in as much energy from the explosions as he could within a fraction of a moment to hopefully put up another defensive effect. As drawing in this much energy took its toll on Desmond but gave him enough energy within the moment he could produce a second energy pulse to defend himself and those he now risked his life to save. Once the explosion had finished, Desmond was already feeling the effects of trying such a risky move, but it at least worked, as those who were behind him were alive. It just left Desmond with some burns on his hands and forearms, but nothing a little healing and rest wouldn't fix.

After that Desmond Karim, Marlijn, and Owain went to search for the Chemical Mage who was moving all of the pawns, but they were unable to find them. Almost like they were never there, which made Desmond pissed off. Yet he at least got to see Blackthorn again, as his horse seemed to have made it out of the explosion fine. At least something went his way. As soon they went and began giving honors to the dead, Desmond watched the flames burn and listened to King Horik speak. Nothing really came to Desmond during this time, just the sounds of those around him, and the crackling of the fires of war. As Horik continued his farewells Desmond heard Horik speak of the Old Gods, Desmond cared not for the gods, may they be new or old, neither mattered to Desmond, but he understood the meaning within things, and when heads began bowing, Desmond lowered his and let the moment rest before he brought his head back up. Desmond felt something akin to rage fill the air, as now all here have been anointed and baptized in the flames of war.

Once their duty was done, they began their journey back to Ersand'Enise, a school that seems to have only made things more strange in their life of Desmond. Some made it back with glory and honor, others with defeat, and others never made it back, Desmond just wished for some sleep. As once Desmond awoke he found a note under his door that was meant to tell them they were going to be split up into new student groups, with new roommates and even masters. Desmond sighed as he saw this as the shifting of things from last night's many things. The Conclave and then the assassination attempts, they probably wanted to make sure nothing back would happen from people on different sides being together in the same room. Desmond didn't personally care for much that was going on, he was just upset they are switching something on him, and with this, he will need to make introductions with his new roommates. Yet that will have to wait, he is in today's Making Camp class, which doesn't really seem like it needs to be an actual class, but it seems like it will be something that they think would need to be there. This class probably exists for the noble likes, which upsets Desmond, not for the fact that they don't know, but for the fact that they wish to waste his morning like this, but he will go, after all, this could set a bad image for him if he decided to blow off a class.

Wvysen Myranne

Place: Perrence Student Dorms, Academy at large

Wvysen raised an eyebrow as she opened the letter informing her of the new student groups, then stretched, shaking her head. Ah well, she didn't really mind what group she was in. More importantly to her were the events of last night, which she was... not terribly up to date on. For many others, last night had been wild, whether one had been active in the partying and procession (which she had graciously turned down in favor of her studies), or... even more oddly, the three bloody assassination attempts that had gone on, apparently. Even holed up in her dorm like she had been, word spread like wildfire. With a sigh and a shrug, she shifted to put on her daily attire, aiming to go on her morning walk. Back in Arsica, she typically went jogging in the morning, but she noticed that gave her a few more odd looks here, and she preferred to kick up as few waves as possible here.

Walking around, there were a few things she noticed. A few details were clearer than others, but others... definitely weren't. The open areas around the academy seemed to have averaged out into a normal amount of activity, with no doubt a few people busy sleeping off hangovers from the previous nights party, and a few people out and about with the freedom of the day. With her Pocket Wvytch in her pocket, and meandering around the place, there were plenty of rumors ablaze in the academy. Three assassination attempts. Varying degrees of success, and with enough shifting points of view, Wvysen couldn't really get an accurate feel for the details, beyond merely who the targets were. All figures of importance, which wasn't too surprising.

While Wvysen so dearly wanted to just ignore the matter, that... probably wasn't the wisest idea. Three assassinations in the recent area, all on very important people, the same night of a triumphant party... there wasn't enough luck in the world for that to merely be a coincidence. For now, though, the information wasn't reliable enough for her to get much intel. Some people claimed to have personally been there to fight off the assassins, of course, but she knew better than to take that seriously (as did the friends of those claiming, usually). One assassination was successful, one almost was, but she didn't hear much about the third. Without the proper intel to make any decisions herself... Wvysen shook her head, deciding that her goal for the day would instead be to find those in her next group. First, Dorothea...

A Conversation in the Workman's Quarter

They met in the Workman's Quarter, in the shadow of the Proving Grounds, in a tavern. The owner of the small establishment thought nothing of it. In fact, he was quite grateful for the patronage. With the way that all the people who made the decisions had been beating the drums of war after yesterday's events, business might soon dry up. Two men, two women, and a teenage boy and girl, they took the table near the front window and ordered the Lepdes roast, Enthish Pudding, pumpernickel bread, and lentil soup.

"So... why isn't Papa here again?" inquired the boy, prodding at his hot soup with a spoon. There was something impatient about him.

"Papa is teaching, little brother," the girl scolded. "You well know that."

"That's not what I was asking," the boy said dangerously. He was perhaps fifteen years old, with short, dirty-blond hair and a cherubic face only now starting to edge toward manhood. There was something pugnacious about him. His words sought confrontation.

The girl, slightly older, ignored him. "So, speaking of Papa," she chirped, "how did his voyage go yesterday? He was sailing on that Belzaggic ship, was he not?"

The boy glared daggers at her and she smiled sweetly back at him. "Oh right," she amended, "Did Grandma go with him?"

"Josie," said one of the women, reaching a hand across the table to clasp hers.

"Yes, Auntie Lilla?"

"I fear the thunder frightened your dear grandma too greatly. She had a heart attack."

The girl's face fell. She put down her spoon. "What!? How!?" Her eyes searched the others. "Is she going to be alright?"

"'Bout time the old bag keeled over," The boy snarked. "Don't be too sad. You'll get your inheritance finally."

An older man with a bristly grey mustache, seated at one of the heads of the table, turned and gave the boy a look that silenced him. 'Auntie Lilla' continued. "Everyone was certain she'd joined Ahn-Eshiran this time, but it appears she'll be okay. She just needs plenty of bed rest."

"Oh thank the Gods," the girl breathed. "I would be inconsolable were anything to happen with her."

"You're already counting her coins," the boy scoffed.

The girl twisted his way and knitted her fingers in front of herself. "Just because you don't have a conscience, Benedetto, doesn't mean the rest of us don't." She turned to the others. "Well, make sure that she has whatever she needs. Should I be of any assistance, don't hesitate to call upon me."

"An invalid caring for an old crone," the boy sniped, "now there's an arrangement."

"That is quite enough, Ciano." A tall young woman with long brown hair and striking green eyes gave him a warning look before turning to his older sister. "Now, as for your Papa, you'll be quite happy to hear that he met with the Belzaggicman and took care of their business."

"I knew Papa would come through."

"He's a reliable fella," said the other at the table. A large man with a short thick beard, merry disposition, and orange ascot, he'd been busy stuffing his face up to this point. He was still eating while he talked, in fact, and a couple of the others arched their eyebrows at him. "Uncle Al..." the girl whined.

"Haha, sorry! Sometimes I forget what genteel company you lot are." He swallowed and dabbed at his mouth with a kerchief.

Then, the older man with the mustache spoke up. His hair was silver and slicked back, his cheeks sunken with skin leathery and pockmarked, and his voice deep and rich with a Torragonese accent. "Mhm," he began, "So, Josie, tell us about your performance last night, and your mother's."

"Oh grandfather, it was to die for!" she giggled excitedly. "Why, mother danced as I played, with this great big Eskandishman, and he was good: much better than either of us had expected. Still, she made a good account of herself and I tried to play the notes that I thought would compliment her abilities." She shrugged. "Oh, there were some casualties, as there always are at these events, but I would say the night was a success!" She raised a glass of wine and took a little sip.

"I heard they even got a standing ovation," said Benedetto, taking a sip of his own. Josie ignored his jibe, but Uncle Al stifled a giggle.

"What of your cousin, the soldier?" asked Lilla, turning to Uncle Al. "And his shadowy brother?"

Grandfather, Benny, Josie, and the green-eyed woman joined her in looking the bearded man's way. "Oh them?" He paused with a chicken thigh halfway to his mouth. He glanced greedily at it before some faint sense of etiquette won out and he put it down. "They did what they needed to do. They're safe. 'Pparently, Rouis brought in the Legion, and there were Zenos involved, and third parties. Dangerous business, you know, being a sellsword."

"Not if you know how to handle yourself," boasted Benny, and Josie rolled her eyes. He smirked at her and threw an arm over the back of his chair. For a moment, it looked like he might even put a foot up on the table, but he must've thought better of it. "Anyway, what's next? I'm rarin' to go. I've waited long enough in this dump."

"Perhaps you wouldn't be so bored if you focused more on your studies," Josie sniped.

"Perhaps you wouldn't be so boring if you focused less on yours."

"Well, you won't be visiting our Revidian friend," said the green-eyed woman. She was unusually tall and had a particular pallor that marked her out as yasoi. "He felt lonely and invited some friends of his own around, so nobody would think we hadn't paid him a visit."

Uncle Al let out a bark of laughter and Aunt Lilla snickered. Even Josie and Grandfather smirked. "So gossip's really that he sent for us to visit his friends?" Uncle Al inquired.

Grandfather nodded. "As we'd hoped. It serves him right for the way he treated your brother." He glanced at the younger two. "Your Papa."

"I wanna kill him," said Benny bitterly, and he received glares from all five of the others, most especially his sister. "Relax. Not literally. Just as sure as she'll never walk -" he jerked a thumb in Josie's direction "- I'd never bring the family into disrepute."

"I would trust not," said grandfather sternly, his eyes narrowing. He eased off after a moment and that was cue for the others to do so as well. "As for who we're sending you to meet with, you'll be spending time with your fellow students."

"Yes, a little birdie told me that you'll be going on a bit of an adventure together soon," said the yasoi woman. "You'll be meeting lots of people there, I imagine."

"Some meetings will be lasting," warned Grandfather. He narrowed his eyes, "and some very brief."

Doge and Ismette: @Force and Fury

The final hours of the evening were quiet and reflective. Leon sat laid back on the windowsill of his bedroom, playing into the open night air. There was too much to consider, too much to stress about. Sure he had some talent in knowing what people wanted, but trying to get his head around this situation stretched his mind to its limits. He felt like no more than a young child trying to grasp the complexities of this world while those who knew more pulled the strings. For the first time in his life, Leon felt anxiety. It was a feeling he had never known before, so he could do little but pluck at the string of his lute hoping they would eventually fade.

The battle for Eskand's ruler had concluded with a boom. Not that Leon had any knowledge of what it was. He could only see the aftermath of it in the distance before the rolling thunder broke upon his room's window. To Leon, that sound only meant one thing. The approaching winds of war had just arrived.

He best head to bed.

Leon's morning routine started much like any other. Wake up, get dressed, style hair, adorn jewellery, and meditate outside for a good few hours. In fact, by the time Leon got notice of the Doge's request, there was very little time until he was due for the meeting.

Wasting no time on meaningless tasks such as putting on a shirt, Leon rushed off toward the Doge's accommodations. He couldn't slow down too much for idle chit chat, but he was able to pick up some details, news and rumour alike, of last night's event. Little of it was surprising but it still sickened Leon to his core.

Maurizio was not one for clandestine manoeuvrings - not unless they were strictly necessary - and this was reflected in the fact that he had simply told Leon Solaire to come up to the Doge's door. Perhaps it was a political play too, though. There were rumours, of course: scurrilous and awful ones that sought to tar Prospero Malatesta with the murder and attempted murders of his rivals. That they could think he would be so unrefined - so obvious! It was insulting. He sipped from a tall glass of water and glanced up at the clock on the wall.

When Leon arrived, he found guards surrounding the Doge's villa. At least a handful had some use of The Gift. These closed in around him, barring his entry.

He paused a safe distance from the guards, taking in the sight. Precautions needed to be taken in such uncertain times, particularly when you are falsely accused of having caused them. Leon believed, at least, that the Doge had not been the sole perpetrator, but others would not view him in such a positive light. So the level of guards was understandable.

What wasn't understandable was the guards standoffish nature to a known ally of the Doge. Leon chuckled to himself. "You must be joking, right? Do you presume to stop the Doge's awaited guest?"

A tall, slender figure appeared in the doorway, silhouette resolving into a human being... or not quite. It was the same servant girl from last time: the yasoi. She was dressed differently, though, almost martially, her long black hair gathered into a loose ponytail draped over one shoulder. "Pentad's sake, you savages. That's Leon Solaire. Let him through." Her accent was one that even Leon, despite his travels, was unaccustomed to hearing. The guards parted immediately, stiffly, eyes darting amongst themselves. "Sorry about them," she said with a smile, glancing over her shoulder at Leon, eyes lingering perhaps a moment too long. "They're constructs, the poor sops.. and they don't even know it yet." She shook her head and rolled her eyes, leading him inside. "Oh, by the way, I'm Ismet'ych'lahin'dichora." She pursed her lips. "You can call me Ismette, though."

"The show of force was less than necessary I have to admit." Leon said following a drawn-out sigh. "Nevertheless, it's nice to see you again. First time I have a name to the face. It's a nice one, I have half a mind to ask you on a date if the circumstances weren't so tense." He meant it, Leon gave off a smile as she turned her head away to lead him down toward the Doge.

As Ismette's head turned and her gaze was off of Leon, his expression reverted to reflect his actual mood. The smile gave away to a stern expression and a furrowed brow. Those guards didn't so much as recognise him and what was that comment on constructs. They don't even know it yet? It was another point on the list that bothered Leon. Could the allegiances of the Doge's guard really be so fickle as to hold him at the gates like that? If so, could he really feel safe around them?

Thoughts like that flooded Leon's head as he walked through the passage. But whenever Ismette looked toward him, he was all smiles.

Ismette, of course, smiled right back, for what else could she do? "Were things any different," she replied, "I might take you up on that." She smiled wanly and led him through a double door. She wasn't all that interested in humans, truth be told. They were such stubby things. Still, he was handsome by their standards and troubled and that was how she liked them. "Try to keep that smile of yours up," she added, pausing before the patio door, "he could use it right now." With that, she pushed them open. "Leon Solaire, my Lord Doge."

Prospero was sitting there quietly in repose: clearly a man in thought. At Leon's entrance, he glanced up and offered a perfunctory smile. "Thank you, Ismette. As soon as you can, luncheon, please."

She bowed, and Leon thought he could pick up something... unpracticed about it, maybe even roguish or mocking, but that would be a stretch. "Right away, milord," she replied, and quickly disappeared, shutting the door behind her with a soft 'click'.

The Doge rose and clasped his hands behind his back. There was no greeting. He seemed distracted. "We have been played for fools," he announced, and Leon could feel his patron's favoured sound-deadening spell take effect once more. Prospero nodded tightly. "Well, I have. You bear no fault, of course."

"You, having been tricked? If you don't mind me asking, to what capacity have you been tricked? Surely, you knew the actions at the conclave would spark conflict." Leon took a seat near the Doge. "Or are you really telling me that you had no part in the conclave's result?"

"Oh, that I knew." Prospero smiled grimly. "The thing is, I think Rouis knew as well. I think Rouis planned for it, and those moves were... very much not public information. Sure, Horik made a show of taunting him, but those two were in bed together." He leaned against the balustrade for a moment and crossed his arms. "You know, I'd have actually failed had they stood together, which leads me to a conclusion that I don't like: the Perrench let me take their seat. Seems they and the Eskandish think there's value in being the victims. Seems Rouis wanted something to galvanize his people, and he got it." The Doge half-turned, gazing out over the quiet section of the city in which his villa was located. "I've gotten careless: an old dog with no new tricks. I'd thought Rouis a blunt instrument because I've so consistently outsmarted him, but I've cause to believe it was a gambit on his part. Even that girl - the Perrench girl who stood up and started singing - was too perfect a coincidence. It was planned. Penny Pellegrin: as a fellow student, you wouldn't know anything about her, would you?"

Leon gave out a sigh after the explanation. "With all due respect, the complexities of politics are lost on me nor do I care to learn them. No matter what plays they decided to make at the conclave, the result remains the same does it not? They are going to wage war because they lost their shiny seats. Whether their people are riled up and singing songs will hardly matter when the fighting starts, no?"

"So, I must say I'm confused that you are asking about a fellow student of mine. All she did was stand up and sing. It seems quite understandable given the circumstance. Or do you suppose there is a higher significance to it all?"

Prospero found himself equal parts irked and amused by the boy's reaction, but one wouldn't have been able to see it from his expression or body language. "People fight wars not because things happen, but because they feel some way about what has happened," he said simply. He'd at least have expected a performer to have understood something like that. "But I suppose this is your way of telling me that you don't have an answer," he concluded. "It's no matter... or one for the people I pay to look after those things for me." He'd more or less fed Leon the significance of it all, so either the youth was uncooperative or else he was not so bright as Prospero had thought.

Do people fight wars because they feel like fighting them? Leon found the idea absurd. People fight wars because their leader waves a shiny stick and they don't really have a say in the matter. That's how Leon saw it anyway. They can be as for or against it as they like, but the result remains the same. Perhaps the Doge really has begun slipping. Leon pondered behind a mask of smiles as he went to pick up an apple.

But maybe he had a point, Leon doubted himself. Was it not the true desire of all to seek peace? Maybe it is the desire of most and a show of injustice was needed to bring them to war.

An appetizer arrived presently: bruschetta in the Livernian style, and the Doge ushered Leon to the table. They had only just seated themselves, and the Doge was reaching for his first serving when the air prickled with a subtle intake of magic. A forearm-sized shard of what appeared to be rough-hewn metal hurtled towards him from due east and a second for Leon from a slightly different direction.

Leon was just able to dodge the projectile, but his apple wasn't so lucky. Whoever just tried to kill him got a bullseye on the juicy fruit as it flew by into the wall behind him. Leon spent little time finding cover behind his chair and getting low down to avoid further danger. "Well shit, guess the failed kings aren't the only ones with assassins on their backs. What's the plan Doge?"

Prospero was not proud of himself, but he froze for a moment. It was imperative that no harm come to Leon. He could not allow inaction on his part to leave his hands stained with the youth's blood. "Ismette, in a word." More projectiles flew at them from other directions but the Doge was already drawing. Part of the bannister and all of his meal disintegrated. Shields materialized out of thin air and blocked the projectiles. His skills as a Binder had not atrophied so greatly. He drew the energy from a third wave and, with a kinetic push, shoved the door open. "Inside!" he shouted at Leon. "And if you've any talent for invisibility, now's the time to use it." Indeed, it appeared that the enemy was closing in. At least four nondescript figures, dressed in casual nondescript clothing, were climbing up towards the balcony. Presently, one leapt, grabbed hold of the railing, and pulled himself over.

Something told Leon that he shouldn't show his capabilities to the Doge or the oncoming attackers. His natural instinct is to save them for the most surprising moment like a performer. However, the prospect of giving away information on his own abilities was one that would make him weaker in future encounters. Surely these assailants had no chance of actually succeeding here.

Reaching into a pouch on his side, Leon pulled out three multi-coloured marbles each nesting between the fingers of his right hand. Without delay, he threw them toward the would-be assassins and took a run for the door.

The marbles in flight would gradually shrink and implode as if they were eating themselves. But a growing light emitting from them and the sound of gathering energy made it clear what they were. The products of Binding magic, and volatile ones at that. The balcony erupted in piercing multicoloured light, temporarily blinding anyone who wasn't looking away.

Leon's trick worked a charm. Two of the assailants stumbled, disoriented. The third and fourth paused. Then, in stepped Ismette. It was not hard to feel the magic both drawn and dispelled. All four collapsed, unconscious. The reason woman strode past, flicking some hair over a shoulder, and picked the Doge's table up in a kinetic grasp. This, she hurled at a nearby balcony, and it struck a figure crouching there, knocking it unconscious. It tumbled into some bushed below. Prospero rose to his full height, blinking away the afterimage of Leon's display. Even though he had turned away, the flash had still nibbled at the edges of his vision.

He clapped the youth on the shoulder. "Well done, my boy. Well done indeed." He drew his hand back, twisting around to scan his surroundings. "And you, Ismette. Thank you."

"You're welcome," she replied, with no formality whatsoever. Was that simply the yasoi way? In any event, Prospero continued, after pursing his lips briefly. "That said, this was amateurish stuff." He shook his head. "Unless there is something I'm missing, they couldn't have imagined they'd succeed..." He spared an uneasy glance at Leon. "It is then my working theory that someone is trying to set us, leaders, at each other's throats. They are fanning the flames, looking to capitalize on any ill-feeling leftover from what were purely political manoeuvrings yesterday." His voice turned solemn. "I have fought wars before when I had to, but I do not like them. I do not like deaths. Somebody is trying to start a war, I fear."

"It would appear that way." Leon patted off his clothes from any dirt it may have collected in the short scuffle. Someone trying to start a war was certain, whether the Doge was truly against them Leon was still deciding. "I believe that concludes the lunch. I'm afraid I have studies this afternoon to attend to."

"Some luncheon," Prospero snorted. "I shall make amends for it at some point. For now, however, take some pastries from Rodrigo as you leave." He was going to offer Leon a place listening to the recording that had been made - even now it was being decoded - but he decided not to. The boy was so disaffected as to have lied. There were no classes on Lepdes afternoons. He smiled easily enough, shook Leon's hand, and sent him on his way. "Do you think we can trust him?" Maurizio asked, appearing beside the Doge. Prospero shook his head gently. "Should I have him monitored?" the head guard prodded but, again, the Doge shook his head. "He will serve our purpose well enough as he is: people have seen and will hear how I was nearly assassinated this day. They will now cast their gaze elsewhere when looking for someone to blame."

For a moment, Maurizio looked at him hesitantly. "Out with it, man," Prospero sighed. "Do we know who was actually behind it?" the big man asked and, for the third time, he was met with a gently shaken head. "No, but I have some idea. It appears that one of our allies might not be a friend after all." He clasped his hands behind his back, businesslike, and pivoted. "For now though, go see to our Rezaindians. Make sure they are well healed, fed, and paid. We may yet need their services again."

Leon had been rude to have dismissed himself from the Doge that quick. Even if his trust in the leader was on the rocks, this was a big mistake. He guessed he could chalk it up to the stress of almost having his life taken plus there would be one task he would do for the Doge. Penny Pellegrin. Whether the Doge's intentions were pure or not, he had marked out a fellow student. This meant that she had some significance and was worth keeping an eye on. Luckily as it happened, they were to be in the same group. Could the Doge have played some part in that, Leon chuckled at how convenient it was.

Leon exited the building with the details of his birth in hand, but he was in no rush to read it yet.

At least Leon wasn't lying. Although classes were off for the day, he was continuing his studies. The encounter today further confirmed that Leon needed a way not only to escape to safety but truly defend himself. To do so he would need to study an aspect of the Arcane that he had only dipped his toes into before. Leon would need to learn to wield fire.

Zarra & Trypano

“THEY’RE OPENING FIRE!” The Perrench captain shouts, having no composure whatsoever. The ship itself shakes, it dips noticeably as the breach in the hull starts to fill with water. People are screaming, running towards the nearest exit they find, the captain himself can barely hear his own orders as the ship continues to tossle.

Zarra Travendour, a young blonde haired boy with visibly violet eyes, hears the commotion and shaking while reading one of the ship’s poor attempts at literature. “What in the world?” he says to himself as he quickly gathers his belongings and rushes out the door. “Oh, that’s… Not good…?” He can only exclaim as there is now a giant hole down the hallway of the transport vessel. He runs towards it, careful not to get too close to the now unstable edge, looking out into the night. He sees and hears a small fireball, he looks perplexed, but his face turns to realization, he jumps towards the floor, not thinking to use his grayborn abilities on reflex.

Another cannonball destroys the wall only several feet from him. It takes him a second to really process his current fate. If he doesn’t get off this ship now, he’ll be an ocean relic. He puts his hands onto the undamaged wood of the ship floor, red energy crackles around him as the floor itself disintegrates away, the energy warping around Zarra as a perfect square of what used to be a pathway is now gone. He hears another cannonshot.

He breathes in, and then runs towards the damaged exit. Like the ground a second ago, the noble seems to just, disappear from midair. The cannonball strikes where he wants stood, that entire part of the boat exploding into a fractal of tree remains. In what looks like a different reality of some kind, where the sky is gray and everything is fog, barely to make out figures walk on air. Losing any color as well, Zarra slowly descends towards the water. With visible effort, he comes back to reality, gently plopping into the water surface. He takes the stolen wooden platform and summons it in front of him, creating a serviceable raft.

The panicked boy climbs on, using his basic understanding of kinetic energy to control the water just enough to push him away from the chaos, before the shrapnel and storm waves take him out. He watches as the ships both sink, the sound of screams fading. This is the first time at sea and this is how it goes. For every 40 men that die, a grayborn survives, as his parents used to preach. The phrase wasn’t false, he seems to be the only survivor… Atleast, until he notices someone in the water.

___
Her scarlet eyes scanned across the pages of the textbook. Diagrams of the human anatomy lay illustrated across, beside it paragraphs of text outlining the functions each organ holds. The ship sways, salty air drifting through the porthole. It was a quiet day on her trip.

Was

Wood rips as with a deafening roar distant cannons send a solid metal ball crashing through the wall directly next to her. Splinters from the boards erupt throughout the room like shrapnel, piercing her body as well as so much else. She couldn’t say she wasn’t startled, getting impaled without warning tended to throw even seasoned veterans off their cool. Still, her first instinct was not to simply cry out or panic. It was to treat the injury accordingly. She immediately opened her purse, the whole ship rocking violently as it was battered from an assault she could not spectate at the moment. Producing her knife and some bandages she begins to wrap the area around the wound where wood protruded from her torso. It was just below the ribcage, likely piercing into her stomach. Painful, likely deadly even to other sorts. For herself it was simply a matter of containing the wound until she could create a skin graft for the region naturally and let it heal.

Prying the wood free she staunched the bleeding before attempting to seal the wound. Pinching the edges of the wound shut she turned her focus inward, concentrating as she channeled her mana towards the process of binding the wound shut. Drawing mana from the sheer quantity of material surrounding her she was able to channel it into new matter, a thin seam which joined her skin together. It was a patchwork solution, hardly dealing with the internal bleeding likely already occurring but she could survive.

It was just in time for her to notice the next issue currently approaching: The water level. She was far from the lowest room on the ship, having paid good money for a decently uninterrupted voyage. This only meant that the ship was sinking fast. She had to think before the weight of the ship and the force of its continued descent threatened to drag her with. Standing up now, her body rippling with pain from the injury, she soldiered on regardless and grabbed the wardrobe that stood in the side of the room. A side was partly smashed in from the shrapnel but it was still intact enough to float however poorly. Grabbing it she shoved with great might towards the hole left by the cannonball that just recently intruded. Despite her size she was formidably strong, able to shove the wooden container through where it fell into the turbulent waters below. With her purse of belongings she seized a loose board and then dove herself for the armoire which lazily wobbled atop the water.

She landed next to the vessel, not keen on accidentally diving through the decorative wooden backing and sinking the whole wardrobe like a veritable human cannonball. Swimming back up she grasped hold of the edge, pulling herself aboard this crude vessel. It was all she could do to rapidly paddle away, driving her impromptu vessel away from the sinking vessel before it could drag her only floatation device below. Exhausted, she collapsed against the side of her vessel, watching as small holes in the side began pouring water through into her makeshift vessel of dubious quality. There was a deep sigh of irritation, the pain from her wound starting to take it’s toll.

The inexperienced mage continues to look, trying to be for sure that it’s a person and not just debris. He thinks about leaving without them, but that thought scares him just as much as the cannon that nearly turned him into pink mist. He continues to manipulate the raft with little resemblance of control, to the… Oh, her looks strike him as very odd. He thinks maybe for a second she’s some sort of fish person, but then he remembered the looks of blood children from his studies. Never got to see one up-close before…Regardless, he approaches with curiosity.

As she drifts along what was surely to be a very long day indeed she spots from the corner of her vision another survivor, one with a raft that looks more seaworthy than her tattered wreck of a wardrobe.

“Um.. You want on? That can’t be comfortable…” Zarra thinks that was a really strange thing to say, but keeps his look of worry instead grimacing at his own comment.

“Ah, yes. It looks like your vessel is more… Buoyant than mine is currently.” She attempts to stand, the wardrobe rocking under her shifting weight as she attempts to step clear from her own ship onto his, provided his offer is genuine.

Zarra watches the wardrobe struggle to stabilize under her, the image of her smacking her head into his raft quickly allows him to grab her arm and pull her fully onto the raft, which is now shaking itself as their combined weight throws its buoyancy off for a second.

Stumbling aboard the ship she makes her way to the center where her weight will tilt it the least before collapsing back down. She checks through the blood-soaked and otherwise regularly soaked bandages to see the skin seam she left. It looks discolored and bruised but she knows the truth: Subdermal bleeding.

With all that’s happened and in the dark, Zarra doesn’t notice her injury until she’s on her back messing with her bangade. “Oh, Shune! What happened to you? I’m a binder, I can attempt to heal it, but I can’t promise it’ll stop the bleeding or anything, I’m still learning how to use recreate proteins…” Zarra looks, almost disappointed, and even a little self-loathed to admit that.

She glances up from her work towards him.

“I’m a binder too. I’ve already sealed the wound. I should be able to mend the remaining flesh or at least give it enough mass to join together naturally faster. I’m just waiting for the ship to steady. Or land. Whichever comes first.”

It seems she’s been fairly focused, her expression still a cold mask of professionalism amidst this catastrophe. Before he can respond she adds: “Thank you.”

He sits down, attempting to be comfortable, a task nigh-impossible on a wave shifting raft. “So, where were you going, anyway? I assume you’re a pirate? Because your ship attacked us first, I think. Not that I care, really, you’re not in the position to threaten me, I never understood people who bite the hands that feed them, anyway…”

She casts something of a questioning glare back towards him.

“I was on transport for Ersand’Enise Academy. As I was below deck I was not aware of what took place until fire was exchanged.” It was a frank response. She didn’t bother humoring the notion of who would threaten who as it was irrelevant.

Zarra looks back out to the horizon while he listens, his mind clearly elsewhere while at the same time in the conversation. “Do you believe in fate?” There’s a solid pause… “Well, do you?”

She blinks a couple times, the only real sign of her confusion towards his sudden shift in topic.

“I… Believe in magic, the causal forces that govern this world and the entities that enforce it.”

“Well, I was asking because I was also on a ship to Ersand, Unfortunately, we’re the only ones going, apparently… I only survived because I’m a grayborn.”

“I suppose unless there were any others in transit to the academy aboard our vessels who may have survived the exchange then we may well be. Until then our main focus should remain among the living to arrive.”

“Do you know what direction the ships were going? If they crossed paths, that means they were both likely converging, we just have to guess where they were both gonna turn at. Ersand will be there”

“There’s little guesswork to it.” She answers his theory, looking up at the stars.

“If we arrived at the same point then likely odds are that we aren’t far from shore. As our ship was heading due south then…” Her seasoned eyes scan the sky before locating the tell-tale north star. “East should take us to shore.”

She points her wooden board in the direction where shore would lie, her natural experience in sailing feeding into this educated guess.

The teenage boy smirks with satisfaction as shows her that he manipulates the water to enough extent to send them in one direction, like a modern boat engine. “This should shorten our wait.”

“Sub-typing into Kinetics I gather?”

“Yep, I figured it would work on a grayborn, be both fast and dodgy, you know? I’m not excited for dawn, that’s for sure!” They sail into the setting moon towards the great Academy beyond the horizon.

After the Storm

Ersand'Enise | Late Dawn, Day After the Assassination Attempts

The previous night had been a success, as far as the parameter of the mission itself was concerned. And yet things still were not at all ideal. It bothered Eun-Ji, who had perceived of her own performance as non-optimal. Yet again she came under the effect of someone's Internal Chemical magic; three times in about a week now. And this time, she might have been killed if not for the timely arrival of Zeno Lascand who had come to her aid. This had definitely put a lot of things into perspective for her. For all the spartan trainings that had sharpened her into a highly effective weapon of death and destruction for Cheol Sang-nam and Tan Keoul, she remained helpless against this particular method of attack. A flaw that had proven itself to be potentially fatal.

She was sitting on her bed in her room in the Castle, forgoing her usual dawn-time exercises and meditations in favor of a personal introspection. She sighed. This will not do... Magnetic magic, huh... She considered it in her mind, the necessity of learning more deeply about Magnetic magic. Of course, as a trained mage, she had some capabilities in all of the five magic disciplines. Yet she had always been very focused in her training, and thus her understanding of Magnetic, Binding, and Chemical magic were all very basic. It will be quite a difficult task for someone like her to attempt to improve herself in a third discipline of magic... And yet she realized that she really needed to do so, lest she remain completely vulnerable to Internal Chemical magic. At the end of her introspection, it is then decided that starting from this very day, she will take it upon herself to spend some time in learning Magnetic magic.

She started immediately, reading over some texts she had in her possession regarding the topic, understanding the need to always start from the most elementary: the theories. A few hours passed by, and then she stopped her study. The time to reconvene with Manfred had came quite close, and it was also a matter of great import. She had promised her commitment toward investigating the so-called Blood Magic course with Manfred after all, and she fully strove to stick to her promise. And thus she left her room, and went off at a brisk pace to where they were supposed to meet.

Seung Eun-Ji | Manfred Hohenfelter von Meckelin-Thandau
Wvysen Myranne | Dorothea Hohnstein

@Force and Fury @Ypnosi @jasbraq

The walk was not short. Manfred had wound his watch - a beautiful pocket watch of Kerreman design - twice after waking up, and it was showing that he and Dory were running short on time. They were just passing through the Merchants’ Quarter on their way to the Sea Gate and Mudville when he noticed a semi-familiar figure standing in a small square, looking for someone or something.

Said figure was likely best described as an acquaintance to the two, at best, with them perhaps seeing each in the more general classes. That being said, her attire was distinctive, with the mage stubbornly wearing it near enough every day, a minor rumor of one particular class the mage was in being that her closet was just full of the same outfit, a rumor usually accompanied by quiet snickering. With her red coat and twintails, she was easily recognized, and Wvysen grumbled as she continued her search for Dorothea. She had asked around for if anyone had seen her the last night, but vague affirmations were the best she had gotten. With a glance in the pair's directions, Wvysen adjusted her glasses, brightening and moving to intercept.

“Hey Freddie, is that the Eun-ji girl you were talking about?” The cloaked woman pointed towards the red coat mage that walked towards them. “Don’t we need to meet up with them like you said?” It seems she hasn’t really taken the time to recognize all the faces in the school grounds.

Manfred blinked. Eun-Ji was clearly a Tan Keoulean name and the girl in the red coat was most definitely not Tan Keoulean. “You okay, swampy? That is… most definitely not a ‘Eun-Ji’,” he observed, with a slight, embarrassed chuckle. “Hey you,” he called, waving at the girl. “You look lost. Don’t I know you from a couple of classes?”

“Oh, you two are looking for her too?” The girl asked with a frown. “I have no idea where she is. Wvysen, by the way. You two hear about the new groups or not?” Truth be told, she had no idea who the guy was, but she recognized Dorothea, at least, from a class or two. Not that they had really talked much, just that Wvysen vaguely knew of her. “You’re Dorothea, right? We’re in one of the same gen eds. And, uh, the same group now. Alongside some Manfred fellow, and Eun-Ji.”

Manfred pointed to himself, unamused. “That would be me.” He paused. “Manfred, not Eun-Ji, in case you were… unclear.” Then, he took a moment to think. Me, Eun-Ji, Dory, and… this Wvysen girl. Her name sounds almost… yasoi. He furrowed his brow. Me. Dory. Eun-Ji. Manfred felt a little prickle of fear.

”Excuse me…” A voice familiar to Manfred could be heard coming from nearby, followed by the one who had spoken it. Eun-Ji, wearing her usual casual dress, approached the others. Her expression was neutral as usual, and she did not seem to immediately react to the presence of the two strangers that were with Manfred. ”If I am late, please accept my apologies, Mr. Hohen-...” She corrected herself, pausing. ”I mean, Manfred...” Then she turned her gaze to Dorothea and Wvysen, followed by a simple polite bow. She had defaulted to her typical rather polite demeanor due to the presence of the strangers. ”And I believe we have yet to be acquainted… I am Seung Eun-Ji. It is an honor to meet you, Ms…?”

“So you’re the girl Freddie’s been on about? It’s a pleasure!” The cloaked woman brought out her hand in front of Eun-Ji. Waiting for her to accept the handshake. Her attention soon came upon Wvysen again. “So you are the girl that always wears the same outfit? Or am I confusing you with someone else?”

Manfred whistled inwardly to himself. He definitely did not wear the same outfit nearly every day. Definitely not.

Considering Manfred was also not a girl, Wvysen assumed that was aimed at her, and she simply nodded, used to that question. “Wvysen. Pleasure to meet you too, Eun-Ji.” She bowed her head slightly in greeting, though she wasn’t too aware of Tan Keoul customs, a nod should be fine, right? “Man, what are the odds of all four of us meeting up at the same time..?” She pondered idly, smiling.

”....” Eun-Ji stared at Dorothea for a second before then flitting her gaze over to Manfred, wondering what Manfred had been telling the girl who still hadn’t introduced herself yet. Also… .... Freddie? It took her aback for a bit, though she did not show it at all on the surface. Then, she took the offered hand and shook it. ”The pleasure is mine… Miss.” Afterwards, she turned to address Wvysen again. ”To be honest… I also wasn’t expecting to meet anyone aside from Manfred, Ms. Wvysen… Hmm.” With that, her gaze turned to Manfred again. Neutral, calm, and yet unyielding.

“Ah, ahem.” Manfred cleared his throat, glancing between the three women. “Eun-Ji, this is Dory…thea Hohnstein. She and I met last night while all the Kerremans were celebrating our newly-won spot on some ridiculous throne.” He grinned, but nervousness nibbled at its edges. “It was a good excuse to have fun, if nothing else.”

“It was fun alright!” The now laughing woman hit Manfred in the side. “When’s the next Kerreman victory? Because that night was extremely fun.” Her mind quickly went towards the fact that she didn’t introduce her yet. “Like Freddie said, the name’s Dory, a pleasure to meet you!”

”To be honest myself, I wasn’t really expecting to meet anyone but Dorothea. Figured she’d be the easiest to find of us, since I actually know what she looks like. Wasn’t expecting you two to be here, too. Especially, uh, with her, in Manfred’s case.” Her gaze fell on Manfred, and with Dorothea’s statement, her cheeks went a light pink. What had those two been up to, exactly..? ”Anyways, um- Introductions, right. I am Wvysen Myranne, of Arsica. Pleasure to make your acquaintance. Seeing as all of us are in the same group, I figured a free day might be a good time to get to know each other, and all four of us being here just makes that even better.” She smiled cheerfully, looking around at the other three, gaze flicking up and down to ingrain the faces and bodies into her memory.

“Ah, yes, a wonderful idea,” Manfred replied. “I believe you know my name already, but I haven’t formally introduced myself: Manfred Hohenfelter von Meckelin-Thandau.” He smiled tightly, politely. “However, I may have to beg your leave for the time being. I am signed up for an… extracurricular class along with… these two and we’re running somewhat late as it is. Perhaps we can reconvene at 1:00 Oraff?”

”....” Eun-Ji looked on silently at how Dorothea was behaving toward Manfred. Her face continued to be completely neutral, and so did her body language, throughout the whole thing. Something else, however, had definitely reacted. For a brief moment, it can be said that a small candle within Eun-Ji turned into a rather messy bonfire. Eun-Ji herself didn’t exactly understand what the fiery feeling was, but she soon took control and suppressed it regardless. ”Very well… Ms. Hohnstein.” She then decided to introduce herself more properly following what Manfred and Wvysen did, starting it off with a forward bow that was precisely done at 60 degrees of inclination. ”As I previously stated. I am Seung Eun-Ji, of the Tan Keoul Army's Mage Division. Again, it is an honor to make your acquaintance, Ms. Myranne and Ms. Hohnstein. As for the idea of becoming better acquainted… Yes, I suppose that is a good idea.” That done, she turned and nodded at Manfred. ”Yes… We should be off. We shall see you again soon, Ms. Myranne.” For now, it seemed she had no intention to question why Dorothea was coming with her and Manfred.

“Ah, well now I just feel like I’m being left out!” Wvysen stated with a cheerful smile, tone not really matching the sentiment, not seeming terribly bothered by the three of them going on together. Instead, she took note of Manfred’s watch, gaze flicking to the clockwork almost immediately, a sense of what almost felt like… hunger welling up at the sight of it. That was a nice watch. The gaze only lasted for a moment, though, before flicking up to make eye contact once more.

“I do apologize,” Manfred replied quickly, picking up on her tone. “I shall make it up to you this Oraff.” He noticed her eyes on his watch and grinned back.

”Oraff works for me, I don’t have any extracurricular today myself. Meet up at the arboretum, maybe? Or just here works, too, really. If you really want to make it up to me that badly, I wouldn’t mind taking a look at that clockwork some time.”

“Consider it done,” Manfred replied. “The very least I can do for rushing past you like this.”

“I thought that watch was something sentimental from your family. I don’t know why I thought such a thing.” She grabbed his watch only to examine it with a closer eye. “Huh, It really is good craftsmanship but it is missing something.” She kissed her own finger and placed it on the watch. “There, now it should be sufficiently sentimental!”

Manfred blinked. “Yes, I suppose that’ll do. Now, less time kissing my watch and more time rushing to class, for time is of the essence.”

Blood Brothers
A Collaboration between Manfred @Force and Fury, Dorothea @jasbraq, Eun-Ji @Medili, and Trypano @A Lowly Wretch

In the event, the Gift was employed and, thankfully, two out of the three were kineticists and Dory was… determined. They passed under the Sea Gate, with its great arcing sea serpents carved into the archway and made their way down the Merchants’ Road to Mudville.

The rough suburb looked more impressive by day than it did under the moonlight. Tall, narrow buildings lined its muddy streets and wagons and people alike clattered through them. Manfred found himself consulting his mental map. He was not as familiar with this place as he needed to be, but already more than he would ever want to be.

They came up to a large crossroads and he pointed right. “This way!” he called, shooting down the narrow street at a somewhat undignified pace. There were other students about. Many were wearing hooded cloaks or some other means of disguising their identities. Manfred had been in such a hurry that he hadn’t thought of that. It was too late now, however, to rectify his error.

The buildings trailed off into a large thicket of sturdy sycamore trees and, behind them loomed a large, ramshackle villa. People were glancing around between themselves, conversing, and entering. A thin stream of white smoke trickled from its chimney. Glancing at his peers, Manfred pushed the door open and entered. Inside was a world of high, vaulted ceilings, tall narrow windows, and rustic chandeliers dripping candlewax from above. The central atrium was open, and there was a speaker’s lectern at the far end. Numerous hallways and rooms branched off towards the back and there was an upper floor and balcony surrounding all but the back of the atrium.

Manfred sniffed. Incense, he thought. Disgusting savage stuff. There appeared to be sitting mats on the floor too, as if the students weren’t good enough for actual chairs, like civilized adults. People were gradually gathering on those, taking the choice spots, but he had little interest in being up front. He’d have a better view from the back. “Well,” he groused in a low voice, “this about meets my expectations.”

“This looks like some weird theater play. . Is this really a forbidden magic school or a group of theater kids?” Dorothea, now hidden in her cloak, would whisper in Manfred’s ear. She didn’t really know a lot about all the occult. “And what’s up with this smell?”

Eun-Ji was used to the scent of such incense, it being a common thing in Tan Keoul. Still, the overall atmosphere of the place was as shady as expected. She took a spot beside Manfred, sticking to the back. ”I agree. It is just as I expected…” she said softly. Then, she briefly glanced at Dorothea, still not sure why she was there with them. She definitely will need to ask Manfred about this later.

Manfred let out a sniff of mirth at Dory’s observation, and he was tempted to think of her as shamefully out of place, but she was the only one who’d actually brought a hooded cloak, and those seemed de rigueur here. He was just opening his mouth to comment when a group of robed figures appeared from one of the back hallways. Five had their faces covered, but one was in chains with a sackcloth over its head. In the rear was a sixth: a tall man with dark, shoulder-length hair and a pale complexion. Murmurs rippled through the group of students gathered.

The man who seemed to be the head of the group stepped up to the lectern. “Hello,” he said, “and good morning.” The other four spread out in a square around the captive behind him. They pulled the chains near taut, and the bound and gagged prisoner flinched and wailed beneath her gag. Though it was impossible to see her face, one could tell that she was panicked, hyperventilating. The leader with his deep red robe and dark shoulder-length hair twisted slightly her way and scowled. He turned back to the students. “Someone use Blood drawing, please,” he said simply, “and kill her.”

Dory’s eyes lit up in disgust, tugging on Manfred’s arm to try and keep herself calm. “Are they really going to execute her? . . Is she even guilty of anything? . .” The look in her eyes was getting more and more determined to step in.

At the speaker’s words, a cold pulse shot through Manfred’s body. This was exactly how magic shouldn’t be used. He glanced at Dory and Eun-Ji, determining if now was the time to say something. There were robed figures around the perimeter of the atrium now, though. They’d emerged from the back hallways and he could feel them reaching out with energy. What the hell was going on!?

”....” Eun-Ji’s expression remained neutral as she looked upon what seemed to be downright evil in full display. Her body tensed up, however, and it took her a considerable amount of effort not to reach for the daggers hidden within the fold of her dress. Surrounded and outnumbered. Not enough information too… Part of her was indifferent to the scene, numbed by her years as a Lotus Sentry. Yet the other part of her was screaming at her, telling her to act.

She ended up looking at her companions, especially Manfred. Subtly, she shook her head at him. As much as she wanted to act and do something to stop whatever was going on, acting now will likely prove a folly, if not suicidal.

It was at that moment, with all three infiltrators and a good deal of the remaining student body perched on a razor’s edge, that someone stood up. It was a boy with wild white hair and reddish-violet eyes - clearly a bloodchild. “As you command!” he shouted and, a moment later, the captive howled in pain. Her left hand began to disappear in a mist of blood and unraveling flesh.

But then there was a commotion. The boy was hurled off his feet by an attack from the side. A tall young woman in a hooded cloak stood, crackling with energy. “You would just take life without question!? she screamed. Her dress fluttered strangely, empty on one side, and it made her instantly recognizable as Penny: Penny Pellegrin.

“He ordered it and he is our master,” retorted another, also standing and gathering energy. Students quickly seemed to be taking sides. Meanwhile, the woman on stage moaned and shuddered, weeping beneath the sackcloth and clutching her ruined hand. The leader remained impassive, hands clasped behind his back, eyes slowly roving over those gathered.

As the situation seemed to become inflamed, Eun-Ji finally subtly reached into her dress and took a dagger out, hiding in by holding the handle stuck on her left palm, the blade hidden by the long sleeve of her dress. "I suggest that we prepare for the worst, Manfred… And Ms. Hohnstein.” she whispered to her companions. If things came to blows, Eun-Ji already knew which side she would be taking. After all, she saw no one who fit the description of ‘master whose order must be followed’ in this place. She drew as subtly as she could from the noise and whatever ambient heat there was in the place, imbuing her dagger with kinetic magic. Of course, she seemingly remained standing calmly, not outwardly showing any intention to intervene.

"Can I shoot him? I really want that bastard to taste some lead for what he did!" She opened up her cloak to him, revealing a dueling pistol. Nodding eagerly for his approval.

Eun–Ji was on her feet, and Dory quickly joined her. Both women seemed ready for a fight, and Dory was not quiet about it either. Manfred rose as well. Unlike Dory, he didn’t have his weapon and he wondered just how in Shune’s light she’d hidden it, for he certainly hadn’t felt a pistol in there when he’d picked it up. He felt oddly naked unarmed, but he drew from the light pouring in through the windows, prepared first to cast an invisibility illusion so that he could work unmolested. “Wait, he whispered. Let’s see how this plays out.”

“You attack me!?” roared the student who’d been tossed aside by Penny. He leapt to his feet with kinetically-aided speed and drew a handful of cushions, rematerializing them into daggers which he hurled at the tall girl.

And that is exactly where matters halted… along with the daggers. They disappeared in the blink of an eye, as if they had never even existed, and the leader stepped forward, wearing a scowl of disapproval. “The violence will cease,” he commanded, his voice deep, calm, and unnaturally powerful. His eyes took in the entire group. Some sat. Some remained standing. Others had never risen. The room went quiet. “All violence,” he amended softly. “That is not who we are and that is not what we do.”

He walked over to the captive and removed the sackcloth and gag. She was gritting her teeth in pain. “Thank you, Lilla,” he said softly, placing a hand on top of her head. Students could feel the energy being drawn to him - gently, determinedly. He closed his eyes and concentrated and fresh new bones sprouted from the ragged stump of her wrist. Flesh and sinew coalesced and wrapped themselves around the bones, arteries and veins branched across them and then, finally, fresh pinkish skin, newly healed. Lilla stared at her hand reborn, and blinked. “Thank you,” she said, opening and closing it in wonder.

“No, it is I who thank you for your bravery.” The four guards unchained her and she rose to stand among them. The man in the deep red robe turned to face the students once more. “We are not monsters,” he said firmly. “If that is what you think, if that is what you have come here to be, you may leave now.” He paused, hands clasped again. “The only thing that we are here to destroy is the deathgrip that selfish people hold on Sipenta’s magic. Sure as each of us has blood running through our veins, each of us deserves to access this Gift of the Pentad.”

“Oh, and if you’re hesitant to leave after being willing to murder Lilla in cold blood and without cause simply because you were ordered to, these lovely people -” He spread his arms and gestured at the roughly two dozen cloaked figures around the perimeter. “- will be all too eager to assist you. Practitioners of the Blood do not obey, he admonished, “they think. If you did not come to think - to challenge your assumptions - you may also leave now.”

Dory slumped down with a rather disappointed look on her face. "Did they really have to intervene? . . My finger itches now." She'd lean against Manfred, trying her hardest to cry in a fake manner. "What will I do now?"

"Hmm.” The situation was fortunately defused, revealed to be a test to weed out those who were, so to speak, deemed untrustworthy of learning the controversial school of magic. Eun-Ji calmly sat back down, putting back her dagger into the fold of her dress as subtly as she did when she took it out. “At least they seem to be making an effort in regards to not confirming the stereotype… Still…” She whispered to Manfred. She wasn’t convinced yet, it was too early to conclude that this Blood Magic class was truly harmless. Furthermore, she wondered who this man was who became the instructor of the class. “Manfred, do you perchance recognize who he is?” She asked Manfred, again in soft whispers.

Amongst the twenty who stood by and watched during the event was Trypano herself, standing taller than most if not all the people present. She had halfway wondered why she even bothered keeping her hood up when her red eyes, pale skin and unusual height were more than telling. Perhaps it was simply due to the fact that while she stood out she didn’t particularly care to draw attention to the fact that she stood out, not bothering to be among the only few in the room to have her hood down as well.

She watched the scene unfold. It was a test of course, one designed to weed out those who were all too bloodthirsty or simply far too accustomed to obeying their authorities. Blood Magic was a science after all, a subsection of Binding, not some cult ritualism practiced by priests to appease the powers that be. It was no less a tool to be used and utilized than Chemistry or Kineticism. Any field of magic could be used to kill after all. The fear of Blood magic was largely born of propaganda spread by the nobility for fear of what the mutability of their material world could mean towards the status quo.

Her face was no less cold or unflinching as it ever was. A perfect mask of serenity with a calculating stare. In her pocket she held her knife, a surgical tool and also something of a focus for her. Given how long she’s spent using magic alongside medical practices she’s spent a fair amount of her time holding this very blade whilst conducting her binding, hence why it serves well as a tool to center her focus, especially for directed casting.

Her magic was not directed however but instead was being used in the context of reading. Her Chemistry, to be precise. She monitored the chemical exchanges occurring within those who were recent entries into this class. Things such as adrenaline, endorphins and other such biochemical elements were all detectable beneath her discerning eye. She was well accustomed to dissecting the biology of living forms, human and otherwise. It was now simply a matter of doing so without opening the subject first.

She continued to stand by, not adding to the current discourse but remaining ready in the situation that action becomes necessary. Humans were a violent species after all, prone to assumption and aggression.

Meanwhile, Manfred, Eun-Ji, and Dorothea were exchanging whispers. After tut-tutting Dory and suppressing an only partly-comical shiver, Manfred furrowed his brow, thinking. “I cannot say I have seen him about,” the Kerreman confessed to Eun-Ji. “Still,” he continued, “he reminds me of someone.” He shook his head tightly after a moment. “But I cannot place it.” He glanced at the two women. “He seems a showman to me. Look how he has these people in the palm of his hand. His narrative demands trust.” On the one hand, the denunciation of savagery in this space was welcome and reassuring. On the other, he still did not trust the Practitioners of the Blood or their strangely charismatic leader. However, before either of the girls could offer their thoughts, his soldier’s instinct pulled at him and his eyes darted to the side, where Penny was scooting over to join them. “We have company,” he whispered, moments before she arrived.

"Who's that? Another acquaintance? . ." Dory looked at him with angry eyes, the woman really needed to shoot something soon. She’d stoked herself up when a riot had almost happened. But in the end it left her needy. Looking at the approaching girl, she cleared her throat while thinking about what her mother would say. "Young lady, you could've died!"

Penny blinked, unsure what to make of the intrusion. “Ummm… okay, mom?” She glanced at Manfred and Eun-Ji for some type of assurance that this was not just some random nutter.

"A showman…” Eun-Ji nodded at Manfred. “I agree. I would not trust him. Not just yet. Not when this whole thing seemed planned exactly to induce trust in him upon us, the students.” Then, she noticed Penny approaching just as Manfred whispered it. Dorothea was once more quick to speak up. Eun-Ji hardly reacted at all to the resulting peculiar interaction between Dorothea and Penny. After all, she barely knew who Dorothea was herself, what’s with her being an unexpected addition brought along by Manfred. She merely lightly shook her head in response to Penny’s glance at her and Manfred, as if trying to tell Penny that she herself knew little about Dorothea.

“Anyways,” the Perrenchwoman continued after a minute, “I did not expect this to be a ruse. It’s rather brilliant how he’s weeded out the bad ones.” She shrugged. “Besides, it’s the sacred duty of a Binder to protect life. I truly thought she would die had I done nothing.” Despite the light tone, there was a tension evident in her body language. She settled on a cushion beside them, gazing up intently at the speaker. “If this is what Blood Magic is really about, then perhaps we should all give it a chance.”

So, with varying degrees of embrace or reticence, that is precisely what the group of four did. This seemed to be as much a quasi-underground society as a class and Manfred had to admit that many of his initial fears had been allayed. Still, it seemed almost… too good to be true, as if they were putting on a friendly face for public consumption, for when they knew they’d be watched. He wondered how it was that they could run a class so brazenly, just outside of the city walls. They would have powerful benefactors, he knew. One glance at Eun-Ji showed that she knew it too. Dory, for her part, had seemed eager to fight: heart in the right place, perhaps, but hotheaded. A beautiful woman, he thought, a loving woman, and not unkeen of mind, but questionable judgement. Of Penny he knew little except that she seemed favourably disposed towards Blood Magic and she was a person of action. Time would tell where she fell on the spectrum from friend to enemy.

Regardless of their interpersonal dynamics, the four Biros spent most of the next hour practicing the foundations of blood drawing: how to grasp with one’s manas at material as opposed to energy. While it seemed frighteningly easy for Penny, it was… an alien concept to Manfred, he was forced to admit, and an uncomfortable one. It did not feel right to… destroy concrete things. For all of the Practitioners’ righteous rhetoric, all that the exercise served to do was to reinforce his fundamental wariness of the discipline. Still, he admitted to himself, as he walked back with Eun-Ji and Dorothea for their afternoon rendezvous with Wvysin, I will keep at it. Manfred knew that his instincts had been right. He, the dagger that was Eun-Ji, and the blunderbuss that was Dory had stumbled into something of great import, and there was no telling just how deep the rabbit hole would lead.

Chapter Ten: Dark Wings, Dark Words
Part One: Into the Tower

The students blinked. They had been standing in a drafty stone stairwell between floors in the Forked Tower, caught between exultation and trepidation as they had proposed their solution to the problem. Now, they were not. Surrounding them was an expansive study, multiple stories high and replete with towering bookshelves, a strategy table, and numerous desks and hutches packed full of magical and scientific equipment: clearly the personal domain of an eminent Arch Zeno. At the far end, daylight streamed in through a set of towering stained glass windows. They were set high enough against the wall that the students could not simply look through them.

It was all so grand and unexpected that it took many of the new arrivals a moment to notice that there were more here than simply their original group of five. As they looked around, they noticed other familiar and semi-familiar faces from campus. Indeed, there appeared to be twenty-five in all. What they could not know, of course, was that there had originally been one-hundred others who had failed the test at some stage or another. Those found themselves back in bed with no memory or knowledge of what had transpired remaining in their minds.

For the twenty five who had passed the three tests, however, a new challenge awaited. Almost lost amid the sudden turmoil was the elderly, white-bearded figure at the far end of the room, hunched over a desk. It twisted in its high-backed chair, cold grey-blue eyes peering out from beneath wizened wrinkles and bushy brows. Somewhat querulous with age, the figure stood, a great sea-blue robe unfurling as it did so. "Welcome to the Society of the Forked Tower," said a deep, gravelly voice, resonant despite a tone steeped in age. "You were smart enough and the others were not." It was the paradigm himself: Hugo Hunghorasz - by the reckoning of some, the greatest mage to have ever lived.

Seung Eun-Ji | Leon Solaire

@Jumbus

A Friendly Duel in the Park

A park in Ersand'Enise, near the Castle dorm | Sometime before the gathering with Hugo Hunghorasz

It had been days since Leon had been sent out to learn fire magic. Mastery of light meant he didn’t have to learn it from scratch. Instead, it was a matter of using the same techniques while emitting a different form of energy. But there was a crucial thing, Leon needed to learn about fire magic.

Control.

One can cast light magic all they want without refrain, it won’t harm those around them and it won’t scorch the Earth. Leon became accustomed to this, letting his magic flow to his every whim with no restraint. But fire meant recklessness could claim lives and he wouldn’t allow himself to do that.

Leon came up with a simple test. He would spar against another student in a specific location. In the middle of a park, full grass and sparse trees surround the area. With non-stop sun for a few days so all of it was dry. Should flames catch onto them, it is unlikely he would be able to put them out. But if he couldn’t use fire without setting the grass alight, he didn’t want to use it at all.

The only thing left to do was wait for a contestant. The sun shone high in the sky and he meditated below the incandescent light. Every breath he took felt like it stoked embers in his core. He felt dangerous like he was using the sun’s power for a grim purpose he wanted nothing to do with. Something in his mind wanted him to fail here so he could put this phase behind him. But he knew he had to become something stronger.

Eun-Ji had seen the note that Leon had left on the board of the Castle that day while she was out taking a break from her own studies in her room. It piqued her interest; not because she was specifically interested in sparring herself but because she wanted to see the other students sparring. Thus she went to the location described on the note, expecting to find Leon and another student already mid spar… Only to find that Leon was alone, waiting for a potential sparring partner.

And he was, once more, shirtless. Just like when he and his group were coming over to Zeno Zemana’s house back on the second day. At first, Eun-Ji wondered if he just preferred not to wear a shirt unless he must; but then she followed it up by thinking that it’s not all that weird for a male to be shirtless while exercising or sparring. Regardless, she ended up watching him a while longer, wondering if another student would come.

Nobody else came even after the wait. She started to think that maybe nobody at all would come, and it made her feel like perhaps she should just volunteer herself then. After all, she knew Leon and it would be a lie to say that she didn’t have some curiosities about him after the thing with the rose that he gave to her on that first day. Thus, she approached him quietly, and when she was sufficiently close she spoke to him. ”Excuse me, Mr. Solaire… I saw your note on the board of the Castle…”

With a final exhale Leon opened his eyes to see who greeted him. He was pleasantly surprised by who it was, it gave the smile he was going to give off an air of sincerity. "Ah, yes, the note. I am glad actually, I’m all out of flowers.” He joked while hopping to his feet with a laugh. Patting off his pants he continued. "Are you wanting to spar off against me? Because I am quite hesitant to harm someone of beauty."

Leon stretched out prepping for a fight as if he hadn’t said the previous sentence. With every strain, faint embers trailed off his body. "If I can ask, please don’t warn me about your techniques. Take every advantage you can… Oh, but I would like to know your name if you don’t mind.” Leon was so caught up in it all, he almost forgot to ask the girl for her name.

”Yes… Thank you again for the violet rose you gave me before.” She bowed politely at him, before continuing to introduce herself. ”My name is Seung Eun-Ji, of Tan Keoul. It is an honour to meet you again, Mr. Solaire.” She paused, looking at Leon with a completely neutral expression, in reality wondering how much of her own combat capability should be told to Leon despite his request to not be warned about it. After a brief moment, she nodded to herself and spoke up once more.

”Please do not be worried about harming me, Mr. Solaire. I am… Not unfamiliar with the intricacies of combat.” She said so humbly, stating it as a matter of fact. ”How would you like to do this, Mr. Solaire? What do you have in mind for this sparring session?”

"The rose was the least I could do. Please, call me Leon. You don’t need to be so formal.” Leon took a bow in return, this lacked the politeness and subtlety of his company. ”I intend to use fire during the sparring session. Even if you say I shouldn’t be worried, fire is a dangerous and destructive thing. If you think you could be hurt, please leave now. I won’t judge you for it.” A serious streak crosses his face as he prepares for a fight. From the eye of Eun-Ji, this would pretty clearly be someone imitating an experienced fighter as opposed to the real thing.

”Very well… Leon.” She said while still giving him a polite and respectful nod. ”I understand. Indeed, it is a dangerous thing to manipulate fire. Harm is definitely a possibility… However.” She moved to shift her own stance into the neutral stance of the Seun-chi-go martial art style. Despite knowing that Leon’s own preparation seemed to be an imitation rather than the real deal, she intended not to disrespect him by holding back too much. ”I am also not unfamiliar with fire and flames. Please, if you are ready… Shall we begin?”

Despite her words, she didn’t seem to do anything else aside from getting into a combat stance, not performing any drawing or other feats of magic. She intended to give the opportunity of the first move to Leon.

Leon’s eyes narrowed a bit. He was suspicious of this girl. She was familiar with combat and flames alike, just what had she been through? Surely it could not be normal, not as though he would have a solid reference. Tan Keoul is a place he had only seen in passing, but normal kids can’t be accustomed to things like that.

But that was all a matter for another time. Eun-Ji stood waiting for him to act. This was a test of his own abilities first off, so it was up to him to initiate. Reaching into his back pocket, he pulled out a single marble. "Well, don’t mind if I do.” Suddenly, almost by reflex his showman persona returned as he initiated the attack. He tossed the marble high into the air as his left foot double-tapped the ground. A gust of wind took beneath him, quickly gliding in a twirl toward Eun-Ji.

Eun-Ji focused entirely on Leon and his actions. The marble tossed into the air, the left foot tapping the ground twice. She kept watch of it all while also keeping in her mind that they might be nothing more than empty gestures, reacting with tempered reflex as Leon started moving quickly towards her. She drew from the ambient heat and the noises of grasses being caressed by the wind; just a little bit was needed for her opening move. As Leon got within 2 meters of her, she moved backwards matching the speed of Leon’s approach in a way only a Skyborn like herself could, as if hovering on the ground, all the while conjuring and flicking a small lick of intense fire at him; the Wyvern’s Breath spell at the lowest tier. A move that should be fitting for the purpose of the spar.

Leon ducked immediately. This had two effects. The flame coming toward him would fly over his head and the marble behind him could detonate at full effect. The marble burst out into blinding multicoloured light. Seeing an opportunity, he swung his leg across the ground in a kicking motion as the fire was expelled from his feet in a sweeping motion.

Light. It was a clever trick by Leon, trying to blind an opponent using a light that burst behind himself. Eun-Ji recalled her mistake with the Light of Ahn-Shune she used against the Masked Soldier the night before, and coupled with her mind never forgetting about the marble, was able to react quickly to it. She drew from the light itself, protecting her eyes from the blinding effect while at the same time earning her some energies to use. She floated up to the air seamlessly to avoid the sweeping fire from Leon’s feet and then took to performing a more serious offence than before, swiftly taking a dagger from the fold of her dress, flipping it around and imbuing it with just a bit of kinetic energy to accelerate it, and then throwing it. The kinetically imbued dagger flew at high speed, the blunt side of the handle aimed at Leon’s stomach.

Leon was already too absorbed in his next move to consider the attack Eun-Ji just threw out. With a deep inhale, he was about to continue the assault as the dagger connected with his stomach. The blow took the wind out of him, but that was very bad timing for both parties involved. The heat rose up in his lungs and with a lack of control, the fire began erupting out of Leon’s mouth. In a panic, he threw his back to the ground letting the flame discharge into the air. He hoped Eun-Ji was alright but he wouldn’t have been able to tell.

Eun-Ji had expected Leon to be able to evade the attack, and thus the discharge of flame was unexpected. Fortunately, being a Skyborn that is also a Kineticist worked to her advantage. She quickly changed direction midair, dashing horizontally back down to the ground at an angle that allowed her to evade the flame, accelerating herself with a little bit of Kinetic energy to make doubtlessly sure that the flame did not even graze her. Landing solidly in a kneeling posture, she calmly straightened herself to a standing position as she called out to Leon, a bit of worry creeping into her voice. ”Are you quite alright, Mr. So-.. Leon?”

Leon lay on the ground, looking up to the sky, letting the relief wash over him that she replied. With a couple of blinks and a now unfiery exhale he tilted his head over to see that she wasn’t even touched by the flame. He let out a laugh of relief, even if the grass he lay on was mildly scorched. "I’m quite alright.” Leon tilted his head back to see the sky. "Quite alright indeed.” A bit of a pause went by as Leon pondered his future with fire. Sure the nature of it was dangerous, destruction is inevitable. But people aren’t helpless like motionless plants.

Leon sat up and looked toward his sparring partner. "So… lunch?”

Eun-Ji was in turn also relieved that she hadn’t overdone it and that Leon was in fact quite alright. She walked closer to Leon as he sat up, offering him her right hand to help him stand back up. ”Ah… Yes. If we are done with our sparring, I suppose we are just in time for lunch. It would be an honor to accompany-” She paused as she realized she was defaulting back to her overly formal speech. ”I mean to say… Yes. Lunch. If we are done.”

Leon found this girl quite confusing, she switched between an extremely formal dialect to some attempts at laidback speech. Combined with a strange affinity to combat, he had some theories about what type of place she came from. But none of those theories sounded very nice so he was just going to ignore them. "Excellent!” Leon said with a smile and a clap of his hands. Taking to his feet again, he continued. "It's a date.”

... A date? The word made Eun-Ji wonder if the meaning of a date was different here than it was back in Tan Keoul. Regardless, she was herself too polite to ask about it further, nor was she sure whether it actually mattered much or not. Thus, she simply nodded. ”Very well… Let us be off, then?”

Leon blinked a bit, he wasn’t expecting such a straightforward reply. "Ah…, yes, let's be off.”

And thus on that note, the two left the park to get their lunch together, in what might or might not actually be a date.

Trypano was in the midst of a face-palm, ready to scold the other who had spoken so freely when they all knew the risks involved. Not even giving notice to the others that they had arrived to a conclusion! It was quite rude indeed. Not to mention foolhardy.

"Could you at least give everyone a sign next time you're about to..."

Her train of thought ran to a stop as she halted, taking in the new scenery around her. It must of been some formidable magic indeed as it seemed to have warped everyone into this particular room. She struggled to consider what possible spells could have had been at work aside from possibly temporal magic with it's use of altering space itself, a kind of magic practiced only by the highest echelons. It beggared the mind to wonder how it's basic principles even worked. Stranger still it had brought multiple other groups here, numbering twenty five in total. Considering these other groups weren't present at the time they solved the puzzle it meant either their tests were all differently located or else more strange temporal magic was at play.

With her arms back at her sides she took in the sight of the room around her with some wonder. This place was a treasure trove of knowledge, clearly the workspace of someone who placed great value in knowledge. She could only imagine the amount of progress she could make in accommodations such as these, the way it'd all benefit her research and-

Oh... My... Divines!

Her eyes widened upon realizing just who's abode they were presently a guest in. It was none other than the one and only Hugo Hunghorasz! His was a name all too familiar with her and for good reason too. He was famed as quite possibly the greatest mage who yet lived and his work was widely known in the magic community. It was hard to be a spell caster and not hear his name spoken at least once. For her however his work was well and truly memorable. At least, in regards to his progress made in the field of medicine. As far as doctors such as herself were concerned he was pretty much a super star.

Even as normally placid and reserved as she was it was difficult not to be a little star struck upon seeing a veritable pioneer in the field she aspired to lead in. As such she naturally drifted on over to him as though she were carried on a draft, arms held awkwardly by her side, uncertain of what to do with them aside from keeping them hovering at her sides, too excited to rest but nowhere to be.

"Paradigm Hunghorasz! S-Such an honor to meet you! Ever since I was young I had read your work and I must say it had a profound effect on my choice for a field of study. Your early papers are remarkable, well beyond our time and part of what inspired my research into the link between blood and the gift! I- "

She caught herself. The last thing she wanted was to embarrass herself by utterly gushing to him and rambling breathlessly when evidently he had a purpose for gathering them here, a purpose she would most definitely not stand in the way in.

"... We thank you for extending to us this opportunity. We shall do our very best to prove your faith in us was not in vain."

While she did not necessarily believe that she was one to speak for her group as a whole it was important to give forward a positive first impression. She certainly hoped that the idea to offer due respect to their venerable host was not lost on them.

Resuming a mask of graceful calm she tucked away the giddiness that had seized her and gave a formal curtsy to their esteemed host.

Location: The Forked Tower -> Hugo Hunghorasz's Study

Interactions: Onarr @Bork Lazer, Zarra @BreathOfTheWoof, Trypano @A Lowly Wretch, Ingrid @dragonpiece, Hugo Hunghorasz @Force and Fury

Upon Onarr's voice coming out, Desmond's blood ran cold. Desmond was not ready for someone to speak, so to hear any noise immediately sent him on red alert. At that moment he was about to curse, but he noticed that at that moment their surroundings changed. The once draft and damp stairwell had changed now to a large and dry study. Yet study wasn't an apt description, a much better one would be a cathedral to knowledge. This place had large books shelves that stood taller than most buildings would ever reach, a large table akin to a king's dining table fit for himself and the hundreds of his nobles, many different stations filled with magical and scientific apparatuses, and translucent art made for the windows. Everything here was marvelous as Desmond knew whoever owned this place would have to be absolutely rich.

Desmond forgot for a moment to yell at Onarr, as everything here surprised Desmond, as he took everything in. Yet his eyes landed upon the probable owner of this study. He was an elderly man who stood there and…Desmond had no clue who the man was. Honestly, Desmond knew jack squat about most things related to the culture of magic, Desmond just assumed he was some Mage who had some major control over some very powerful magic. Not only was he able to control hundreds of birds, but also he was able to seamlessly make sure none of them were able to sense or notice each other, and then finally transport all these people here at once.

Even when others brought up his name, Desmond had Zero clue on who the guy was, he thinks he heard his name before, but he isn't really clicking anything. Desmond was quite curious about something, so raised his hand like he was normally told to do in class and then immediately spoke after, "Uh, sorry sir, I'm not very familiar with you, so sorry if I butcher your name. Paradigm Hung'horas, I was wondering if you were the one in the crow?"

Desmond honestly thought his first name was kind of weird. Who names their child Paradigm anyways?

Dark Wings, Dark Words: Part Two

When everyone had gathered at the table, Hugo Hunghorasz raised his arms slightly for silence and, indeed, the air seemed to deaden to sound. "If you remain here, I will assume that you are all interested in what I have to show you." He nodded, businesslike, and rose. With his staff, he traced a circle in the air at the head of the table. For a moment, it shimmered translucently. Then, in a space that had looked no different from any other mere moments ago, there appeared a scene of what looked like the inside of a large gambling house by night. People moved about inside of it and noise poured outward. "Don't worry," the ancient mage advised, "This is a portal, but they can neither see nor hear us." he shuffled around slowly to face the other side and drew a similar circle. An empty dock and water sparkling under the light of three moons appeared. Distant sounds of conversation and heavy objects being moved could be heard. "The first is in Feska, on a riverboat gambling house," Hugo shared. "The second is on the Isla D'Amato, a notorious den of pirates." He took a few more steps and a third appeared, which he described as the house of an eminent figure and strong ally who was about to be murdered by 'agents of chaos'.

He straightened and, after a moment, all three portals disappeared. "In all three places, a crisis is brewing. A riot is about to break out in the first and a priceless item has been stolen. In the second case, strange happenings are afoot with the pirates and they have taken a captive of immeasurable value. In the third, someone who could do immeasurable good is about to die." Gingerly, the old man sat back down. He gestured and, with the flick of a finger, a folder flew off of a distant shelf, and separated into twenty-six separate pages in midair as it made its way over. These settled gently in front of the gathered students and the Paradigm himself. "You have, in front of you, the details of all situations. I have called each of you here because I felt you were the most capable, by various metrics, among the student body, but that does not mean that I shall call upon every one of you in each instance. The teams that are to handle each situation have been carefully chosen. Each will have precisely half an hour to plan and prepare before I reopen the portals for departure. Should you require any specific items, do not hesitate to ask and, within reason, they will be procured for you."

The aged wizard motioned towards a petite woman with dirty-blonde hair seated in a wheeled-chair to his left. "If those items are on campus, you will step outside the door with Jocasta here, and she will assist you with them. If not, you will come to me."

What happened next was a hive of activity, questions, and organized chaos. The students who looked down at their papers would note their assigned situations and objectives there.

Quite a shame it was, truly. The idea that someone of his venerability would be set aside as one might a seasonal ornament was almost blasphemous in her eyes. Not unexpected of the leads of this school but shameful of them nonetheless. Someone of his credence should have a major voice in the decisions of what happens in this school, not be forced to sit aside as though he were a worn out beast of burden.

His talk of personal benefit on these tasks he mentioned was rather odd to her but she made little note of it. Perhaps he meant it would be a decent learning opportunity for those involved. She certainly hoped she'd be able to try out some new techniques in the binding field on living subjects as opposed to the local cadavers and lab rats they were currently afforded.

_
And thus with his speech having reached it's conclusion the die was cast. She, along with a number of others, were to go forth and solve matters that Hugo has seen fit to set them upon. Trypano was already starting to sort through the files laid out before them to get a clearer idea of what it was he wanted them to do. It was quite the odd job indeed.

Assassinate the leader? Retrieve the artifact? Rescue a princess?

It seemed like a job more fit for soldiers or spies of the court, not a bunch of students just starting out in their magic studies. While they held great potential to hurt others it didn't seem like most of them had a great deal of background in large scale battle or espionage. Then again, she had only just met a bunch of them.

"Seems like there's little known from the outside on the nature of this 'Pirate Leader'. We may need to learn more about the ship and it's captain from a local source before we can stage a rescue. Any suggestions?" She asked aloud to the group of hers which may or may not have been gathered at the details laid out. Hugo's offer on procuring supplies stood but in truth she didn't need much to do her role properly. She was a doctor, her aim was to facilitate the success of the mission while minimalizing casualties.

She was well aware of what that entailed. While she had never served as a medic in any battles prior she's worked and studied under those that have. She's been well warned of what to expect, even if she's never had the experience herself. She hoped it wouldn't come to that but alas even the best laid plans are naught but the whims of ants in the eyes of fate.

While she wasn't particularly attached to anyone present here she made special note to temper her expectations in the event any of them die. It would do none of them any good for her to be stunned at such an outcome.

Leon stood in the massive study of the Forked Tower knowing fully well he didn’t do much to get there. Frankly, he stood by and let his teammates do the work while he just looked like he did. And now he stood among the few that had passed the tests, a select few from the looks of things. Lucky him. But it was still to be seen whether this stroke of luck was of any actual benefit to him.

Besides, there was nothing better to do really. Even if he wanted to leave, it's not like he remembered how he got here so leaving could be just as much of a headache. Leon might as well hear the legendary wizard out, who knows it could be a bit of fun. Pulling out an apple from his pocket, Leon took a bite and began snacking while Hugo spoke.

A normal person would perhaps question why a great wizard like Hugo couldn’t stop all three simultaneously. One who could bend time and space could certainly make a joke out of a few jump start assassins. But Leon was swept away by the portals showing tasks ahead of them. In fact, there was a point when he stopped snacking and paid full attention to the speech.

By the end of it, Leon was quite looking forward to the proceeding events. Well, one of them at least. Dealing with assassins sounded… too violent, and pirates sounded violent and dirty. But a riverboat casino, now that sounded right on the money. From a previous experience, he knew that was just the right place to be. Plus if anyone could turn a riot into an adoring crowd, it was him.

Leon was also dressed for the occasion. He met the rest of his group in full attire with a cape and all. Although it was slightly different from his clothes during the opening parade, it was no less extravagant.

"A night on a riverboat sounds nice this time of year. I hope you all have the right clothes for it. At least one of you, and I won’t say who, is a tad underdressed." Leon continued snacking on his fruit.

Location: The Forked Tower -> Hugo Hunghorasz's Study

Interactions: Jocasta Re & Hugo Hunghorasz @Force and Fury

As Onarr blurted out the number, Ingrid knew in her that the math was correct but to say it without getting a final consensus was brave, to say the least. Immediately after Onarr spoke aloud their answer, Ingrid and the group she found herself with were suddenly transported into a new room. Ingrid was shocked at the junt in space but she quickly orientated herself to appreciate where she was. Outright ignoring the other denizens to rather obsess over the well-stooked study. Her eyes darted from shelves to the magical instruments that lay about the space. Ingrid could spend an eternity in here and never want for more.

Ingrid instinctively reached for one of the books but stopped to consider how she would react if some greedy child touched her personal collection without much care. She took a step back and sighed, returning to what the rest of the group was doing. Refocused on the group, she pondered why an Arch Zeno would send for them. It doesn't appear that the other students have been here very long either so it had to be an Arch Zeno who specialized in temporal magic to move so many people in quick succession. Ingrid looked towards the desk to see… HUGO HUNGHORASZ!?!

Ingrid had gone silent, unable to fathom why he would like to speak to them, lowly first-year students who just solved some simple riddles. But that did not matter to Ingrid. Some of the only noneducational books that held permanent space in her home library, now in crates in her room, were adventurous tall tells of Hugo. One of the many Influences that inspired Ingrid to attend here. She wanted to talk to him but thought it might be awkward to speak to someone who you hold in such high regard and them not to even know you existed till now. He was a living legend after all.

Watching Hugo interact with the rest of the students made Ingrid feel that she had restrained herself too much in front of him. Some spoke to him casually and he did the same. The greatest mage of all time changed slightly in her mind, a bit closer to an old man. Now she just felt regret for not treating him normally and getting a chance to interact with him, even though Ingrid doesn't even know how she would want to interact with him. Like do I need to be super respectful because I'm noble? Do I speak to him like we are equals as in we are both living? Would he be willing to give me some lessons? Can I even ask him for lessons!? Maybe it would be alright just to ask him to look at my bread bomb spell. Oh, I'm sitting down.

Without much active thought, Ingrid ended up sitting down and taking part in his presentation. As Hugo presented the situations at hand it was abundantly clear that we were brought here to help deal with the situation at hand. Who us? Who knows, all Ingrid cares about is that this will be fun! Looking through the papers, it seems Ingrid will be going to deal with some pirates. Sounds pretty awesome all things considered. Upon the option of getting some things, Ingrid wasn't too worried. There should be plenty of oil and black powder on an island full of pirates. But just in case, Ingrid goes over to Jocasta. Ingrid Smiles at the woman and promptly makes her request, "Hello, I have some black powder in my room I would like to grab." Ingrid then turned to Hugo, "Um, Hello there, would it be alright if I ask you to procure some wooded cases for the gunpowder. They would be wooden cylinders that would have a top that could either be sealed in wax of friction fitted with a length of about 30 cm long, an external diameter of about 8 cm, and an internal diameter of 6.5 cm? if that is too specific I would be okay with anything that could properly be used as bomb casing for the black powder." Ingrid started off confidently in making her request but slowly lost nerve as she realized how hyper-specific her wants were on such short notice. Ingrid gave a light bow as she headed to the door to go grab her things she wanted.

Carmillia Carbonneau

Place(s): Hugo Hunghorasz's Study -> Feskan Riverboat Gambling House
Interactions:Manfred:@Force and Fury, Eun-Ji @Medili, Carmilla @Animus, Dorothea @jasbraq, Zarra @BreathOfTheWoof

Truth be told, even as cynical as she was, Carmilia had not expected to be warped in front of Hugo Hunghorasz himself the moment she completed the riddle to be warped via temporal magic to what seemed to be Hugo’s study. She doubted any of the rest did either. According to Hugo, only the twenty-five of them present had passed his 'test'. She had to refrain from scoffing. Though she didn't know the exact number of failures, she found it laughable anyone could have failed them. They were rudimentary riddles.

"If those items are on campus, you will step outside the door with Jocasta here, and she will assist you with them. If not, you will come to me."

At least you have the decency to grant us that, you old fart, thought Carmillia. Not that I need it.

While even Carmillia could not predict being kidnapped via temporal warping, the previous fiasco with the assasination on King Rouis had left her on her guard. Direct combat was nothing something she was supposed to a regular part of; she always had others ready for that. However, Ersand'Enise and it's unforeseen surprises had made her realize the necessity of being prepared.

Concealed within her clothes laid an array of vials and cannisters. From all manner of things such as liquid napalm to smoke grenades. Bernhard had acquired them for her.

She had saw it fit to carry them with her the moment she had set off to solve the raven's riddle. Additionally, Flavius was supposed to be trailing after her at a distance but there was no doubt that he no longer had any clue about her current whereabouts. Not that it makes any difference, she thought as she stepped through the portal. It was not possible to bring Flavius along for this.

As Carmillia gathered to meet with her assigned teammates, she caught her gaze landing on a young man that was flamboyantly dressed. As to why he chosen to dress in such a way before beginning the 'test', she had no idea.

"A night on a riverboat sounds nice this time of year. I hope you all have the right clothes for it. At least one of you, and I won’t say who, is a tad underdressed."

Carmillia sighed.

Her teammates for the mission were mostly familiar faces. Leon Solaire was one of them. Though she originally considered him to be a potential ally, she had grown weary of seeing his face and dealing with his antics. At this point she wasn't even surprised that she somehow ended up with him again. The only surprising thing was how he had managed to solve the riddle and arrived at the Forked Tower. Though any respect that was due was quickly spent when he relied on her and the rest to solve the riddle.

Manfred Hohenfelter and Seung Eun-Ji were faces she recognized though she didn't have much interaction with them before. From Zeno Zemana's old group.

Of the remaining two, Zarra Travendour was mostly unknown to her. From what she knew of him, he was of a low ranking noble family and didn't possess any traits that made him stand out to her.

Dorothea Hohnstein on the other hand...

Though her family's current influence was nothing to brag about, Bernhard had brought to her attention the Hohnsteins' past glory. As a result, she had been one of the dark horses that Carmillia had kept her eye on.

And it's about to pay off...

Though Carmillia was unsure of what metrics the Paradigm had used to select the teams—seeing as how Leon was here—she knew Dorothea's participation was no coincidence. Bad blood existed between the The House of Rednitz and the Hohnstein Family. Whatever Hugo's intentions were, between the Lyre of Ipte and their family feud, there was a mountain of profit to be made here. It was a long shot, but aiding Dorothea in restoring her family's prestige was far from impossible.

I wonder if she'll be attached to the Lyre?

Carmillia drew a small amount of energy from her surroundings and trickled it towards the noblewoman. A little bit of friendship magic never hurt.

"I don't know about underdressed, but I'd say he's a tad bit overdressed," Carmillia whispered to Dorothea.
