I was looking through the subforum and I saw there was an old thread of this!

What shows or movies are you currently watching? What do you like or don’t like about it? Would you recommend it to others?

If it’s something that may have spoilers, please hide it just in case someone doesn’t want it to be spoiled!!

Currently I’m coming back to anime and I’ve been watching Black Clover with my fiancé. It’s deceptively good in the sense that it has the slapstick humor that I tend to enjoy in anime, tropes that I’m familiar with but thoroughly enjoy, and a bunch of OP goodness. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea for an anime but I’m really enjoying it.

I also just recently started Spy x Family and one I fell in love by episode 1.

Outside of anime, I am super invested in Obi Wan Kenobi. I’m excited to see how it goes.

Our Flag Means Death on HBOMax. I have watched it through 5 times, not exaggeration, in the past month. It only has one season up right now, ten episodes, 30 mins each. but it is soooo good.

Spy Family is wholesome and great, if you're in the mood for it.

Summertime Render continues to be one of the more engaging anime plots I've seen in a bit. (Assuming that it doesn't fuck it all up.)

The Boys S3 is occasionally funny. And it feels like most of the actors are trying their best, with the god awful material/writing they've been given.

Apparently Peaky Blinders is getting another season soon? And I mostly enjoyed three seasons of that. (So maybe, I'll try to pick this show up again?)

Otherwise? I haven't heard much buzz about anything in particular.

Honestly, I don't regularly watch much actual TV aside from cartoons and anime these days. About the only TV shows I've watched in awhile aside from Star Wars is TWD + the spinoffs because I've already invested so much into the franchise over the years that I might as well keep watching it. I did rewatch Longmire to the end earlier this year, though. Solid neo-westerny cop show, at least until when they start focusing on actual arcs/plotlines in the later seasons rather than a case an episode. Not that they're bad, but they're also kind of eh to watch IMO.

Anyway, I've been thinking about watching more actual TV again. Been wanting to watch Yellowstone and other shows like Joe Pickett, Deadwind, etc. that I just never have got around to watching lol

Been rewatching/finally finishing Fairy Tail for the most part. Also watching Ms Marvel and eagerly await episode 2's release on Wednesday. I want to start on Stranger Things Season 4 soon.

Someone remind me to actually watch the Obi-Wan show again because I keep forgetting about it lol

I watched the first few episodes, talked a bit with some friends and then just... dead silence. Haven't heard much of anyone say anything about it unlike Boba and Mando.

I made the mistake of being bored and watching a YA novel adaption called "Panic". (It's bad.)

And to save you the time I wasted, here's the plot and I'll let YOU guess what the twist is.

There's a small town where (30 year old actors playing) teenagers run a super secret game that everyone in town knows about. Except the police. Yes that already doesn't make any sense. But hear me out. And these "tradition of games" have lead to reported injury, death, and crime. Where dozens of teenagers are apparently stupid enough to kill themselves over 50 grand.

BUT, ya see, there's a twist. Someone is secretly behind a conspiracy to...what? How did you guess that the bad guy was the cop? I haven't explained the rest of the plot yet and-

50 grand. That's like enough for a new base package Bronco!

That's life changing money right there.

Top Gun Maverick was well made. (And probably better for those who recently saw/deeply care about the characters in the first.)

I had not seen it in a while. So when most of the movie hinged on slow sentimental scenes between those characters, I was starting to get a little bored in places. (Plus, the action felt pretty low stakes. Like I knew no main character was going to die, or even get injured. Similar to Panic.)

But according to the people I saw it with, it had plenty more action than the first.

So it was decent overall, I suppose.

The thing about that is the only characters from the first other than Maverick is Iceman and that whole scene and its sentimentality has more to do with Val Kilmer's irl cancer than any connection from the first movie because the first movie absolutely does not show them becoming friends beyond just the fact that they're both navy pilots. The action feeling low stakes is exactly what makes it so effective. In the age where action movies are just more and more grandiose and similar and more often than not contain superheroes and the same style of humor, a movie that is just so simple and 'low stakes' while also being so goddamn incredibly well made because of Cruise's obsession for realism makes it so goddamn thrilling to watch. There's just a sense of genuine realness and tension to it that you just don't get with blockbuster movies anymore.

The 2:15 scene is a singular gripping moment of film tension from start to finish and people in my theater cheered after that scene and it was earned. A movie doesn't have to kill characters to up stakes or tension when it's shot in such a way that when characters have an insane amount of g-force you actively feel yourself gripping the armrest until it levels out. That's the kind of movie it is and goddamn it's incredible how a sequel to a cheesy bad 80s movie about shirtless dudes pretending they're heterosexual is one of the best movies of the year and also the best legacy sequel movie that I can remember.

Maverick is far and away the best theater experience I've had in recent times and Tom Cruise is saving cinema once again what a crazy motherfucker. It's not the best movie I've seen this year (but it's a solid third), that honor goes to Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Anyway I have no desire to watch Obi-Wan because a big problem I have with Star Wars projects now is this insistence on filling in gaps that don't need to be filled and also everything still revolving around the same legacy characters. Star Wars needs to leave the Skywalker era behind in either direction.

I have been watching Ms. Marvel because I'm a fan of Kamala Khan in the comics and probably the biggest Carol Danvers fan any of you know (and I will fight any pretenders to my throne) and with those biases aside the show is, three episodes in, probably the best MCU streaming show. It's certainly the most visually creative and colorful which is a low bar but then this is the MCU we're talking about.

Birdie Wing: Girls Golf Story is the most yuri ass show that isn't actually a yuri show and the hardest sell for it isn't them making golf exciting but it's trying to tell me that the main character is fucking 15 years old and that's part of why I have such a difficult time getting into anime anymore.

I watched Good Luck To You, Leo Grande and that was a delightful little movie. It kind of felt like a stage play but there's something to be said about a movie consisting solely of two characters talking in a room for 90 minutes especially when the characters are talking about sexuality and personal growth.

My mixed feelings about Everything Everywhere All At Once aside.

I do agree that killing off any of the characters, probably wouldn't have fit what the movie was going for. But it easily could've been a little less predictable in places. (The last 'protags saved at the last minute scene' was one flashback away from being a Shonen anime.)

My boredom (and youtube's shitty search algorithm when I was looking up music) made me watch "Origin". (Another bad "The Thing" knock off.) Which is another TV series that IMDB has scored way too generously.

But I'm still holding out hope that this seasonal anime will have something worth watching.

What's wrong with being predictable? Especially when the movie sets it up before the final setpiece. It was a play on that exact thing happening in the first one, where Maverick was the one to save the day in the final hour. Like what would have been better, if it was a pyrrhic victory because the protags don't make it back but win the day?

@Fabricant451 In action movies and scenes that are supposed to be tense. Completely predictable outcomes do hinder the experience a wee bit. Especially when its a longer "when will they be saved" scene. But I don't have a problem with a story/plot being cliché. If its done well—and the movie does do most of its scenes well.

In fairness to it, I haven't seen anything better in theaters. And there's nothing wrong with a crowd pleaser. (It's almost refreshing to see a movie being made for the audience to enjoy.)

Maybe I'm just too hard to please. :P

Running through the most recent JoJo season. Pretty strong season. I didn’t actually watch the series until recently. To be honest, I’ve felt like this is one of those anime where the first few seasons aren’t great and then it gets real good. First season was definitely a slog, and season 2 felt very monster of the week. Recent 3 have been pretty good though, with the current one being pretty great. Hoping it only gets strong from here.

Going through Vash the Stampede since it’s getting a new anime. Good stuff. Big twists. Hoping it ends strong, but I feel like a lot of anime from this era got canceled and had to end quickly… Hoping that’s not the case here.

I've read and watched a lot of science fiction. (Most recently a cancelled show called, Dark Matter. Where it botched the premise and mystery element fairly quickly.)

And I've still struggled to find anything in the genre that I could call "my favorite", aside from a few anime. (Which seems to be the only exception, for how often I find myself feeling indifferent to this genre.)

I mean I've read and watched a lot of fantasy and I think fantasy is largely all garbage piles so maybe it's just not the genre for you.

To be fair fantasy is a lot easier to pull off (and in turn a lot easier to screw up). I know a lot of fantasy works just come down to the whole "it's magic I ain't gotta explain shit" cliche as an excuse for things, which is why I feel people tend to be more comfortable with just jumping right in and writing "awful" fantasy.

But back to the point at hand: yeah, I don't really vibe with Sci-Fi, either. But not every genre has to be for me; everyone has their own tastes and interests in regard to the media they consume.
