STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES
S T R E N G T H S▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔• Spirit Familiar: Ms. Endo is followed by the spirit of a young man, called "the prince". He appears to her at various times - with blonde hair and formal white attire - though other people never seem to see him. He is marvelously talented, and because of their connection, he is able to lend his skill to the young witch by partially possessing her body. In particular he can share his dexterity, making Hannah very agile and handy. While possessed, she is temporarily capable of extraordinary feats of acrobatics and manual skill. His abilities fascinate her, but she is somewhat unwilling to make use of them, because her family taught her that it can be disastrous for one to allow a spirit to have too much influence over her. Without resorting to possession, however, there is little that the spirit can do beyond causing the occasional paranormal symptom, such as sudden chills or flickering lights.
Hannah consults a book on spirit binding that she stole from her father's library to initiate contracts with the prince. Although the ghostly man presents himself as friendly and noble, there is a certain horrifying element that cannot be purged from the practice of spiritualism. The prince appears follows her everywhere and appears without warning. The contracts sometimes cause side-effects, especially when overused. These can include light-headedness, vivid delusions, involuntary movements, or the appearance of blood from the nose or eyes. While actively bound to the prince, Hannah subconsciously takes on part of his personality, acting out habits and mannerisms that are not her own.
• First Year Casting: This young woman comes from a line of Japanese witches, and was well-prepared to begin her stay at the academy. As such, she's proficient with most beginner spells and foundational concepts. She's a promising student, but she's also not particularly experienced. She does display an affinity for earth magic. When her powers were first developing, she would exert herself in the rock garden - manipulating and shattering the pebbles there. Since then stone has always come readily to the call of her wand.
• Hannah has an investigative and persistent mind. Some may find it annoying, but her obsession does bring results.
• She's also very honest and open about her feelings.
W E A K N E S S E S▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔• Although a good student in general, Hannah struggles the most with Herbology - especially since the local flora at Hawthorne are very different than what she grew up around.
• She's intrigued by secrets, and her curiosity does get her into trouble sometimes. When she thinks she has a good lead, sometimes the desire to pursue it trumps her better instincts.
• She's shy about dating because of her inexperience and because she's only newly arrived in the area. However, she does want a relationship at some point. Her emotions regarding romance are likely to be more intense because they are new to her and she doesn't know how to control them.
• Slightly depressive tendencies after leaving her family and former home behind.
• She can seem spacey when she's absorbed in things that only she can see.

P E R S P E C T I V E▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ Hannah has been immersed in the world of witches since she was very young. She's well acquainted with magic and the way that spellcasters do things; she keeps up with current events in their society, and she uses convenient spells as casually as she might operate a kitchen appliance. Following in her family's example, she tends to think that magic-users are more important than your average human. After all, humans are wonderful, but they aren't even aware of how their world is kept in check by witches and wizards. Acquiring magic powers and dealing with the consequences of that were crucial steps in her life that most humans just didn't have to go through. If she is going to relate with other humans, it's likely that they'll be magicians. That being said, she's lived most of her life in a different part of the world, where her family is respected and very private. It remains to be seen how much of a culture shock she will experience in Scotland.
Ms. Endo has less experience with the other creatures of the night, however. She's met vampires on a few occasions - mostly friends of her parents passing through - and she couldn't help but feel fear and respect for them. They were titans compared to men. Hannah shuddered to think of days when vampires were less friendly to witches. When she thinks about it, she feels that wizards have been fortunate to obtain the modern arrangements, which are so generous to their kind. The instinctive fear she feels for vampires is mixed with admiration for their uncanny beauty and grace. Dealing with them will certainly be key to success at the academy.
Werewolves are more of an unknown element. Her father told her that they were independent types that came with wildly varying attitudes. Some were more wild beast than man, and others were extremely loyal. But Hannah has never met one personally. She naturally feels a bit of fear about them, but might warm up to a friendly one.
A M B I T I O N S▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔• In the short term, learn more about the ghost who has been following her, and who he was in life.
• Hannah wants to thrive in this new environment, and to enjoy her independence to the fullest.
• In the long term, she wants to become an acclaimed witch, make her parents happy, and return to Japan after school is done.
F E A R S▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔• She's afraid of not being able to relate to her classmates.
• She doesn't want to be made to look incompetent in front of others.
• More darkly, she's afraid that she will lose herself by dabbling too deeply in spiritualism.
H I S T O R Y▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ The Endo family is a refined one that lives out of the way, in rural Japan. They have a large house, and keep a shrine on the nearby property. Hannah served there as a maiden for a few years. Ostensibly they keep themselves busy with religious duties, but the family's ritualism goes much deeper than that in truth - veering into the occult. On her mother's side, every woman had been a witch for generations. Her father was also a wizard, but he was from a smaller family in Britain. Apparently her parents had met during the usual term in a magical academy. Her father made a name for himself there, and managed to win the approval of the Endo family. He took her mother's name when he married her, prestigious as it was, and the two moved to Japan to raise Hannah.
Because of her mixed heritage, and time spent with her father's family, Hannah can speak English as if it was second nature. The girl distinguished herself in school from an early age with success in her studies; and as she grew older her beauty became quite noticeable. Being apart made her aloof, and living behind the walls of her sheltered environment meant that she was almost unapproachable in those days. Consequently, she wasn't very popular with her peers. Still, there were a few friends who would come and visit her at the shrine from time to time. There was even a boy who had taken a shine to her.
As her teenage years rolled on, her magical powers began to develop, and with them the pressure from her parents to perform. Evidently this was more important than all the studies she had worked so hard at before. It was an awkward period for her. She felt new spaces opening up inside of her on a daily basis. Sometimes she would even be up through the night with hot flashes because of it. But the restrictions of her home life seemed to just grow tighter and tighter. For a time she lost herself in the routine and the discomfort of it. She was unhappy. It was around that time that the man first appeared to her. During an afternoon at the shrine, an unknown guest was no strange thing. But the man seemed foreign, and was dressed in fancy, unusual clothes. He didn't speak a word to her, but he definitely got her attention. It was only when her mother commented on the lack of guests that day, that she realized - no one else had seen the man. At first her mind was full of questions, but there was nothing to grab onto. Then he appeared again. And again. Each time it was the same. Each time only she saw him. Eventually it became clear that something was off. He was either a ghost or some other kind of phantasm.
Hannah started to think that the man wanted something from her. She had always heard that the dead linger due to unfinished business. Because of his regal attire and good manners, she started referring to him as "the prince". She became very curious about him, and those thoughts helped the days pass quickly. Still, he almost never talked, so learning more was slow. It went on like that for a while, when Hannah discovered one of her father's books about spiritualism. She used the techniques therein to create a bond between herself and the spirit, in an attempt to gain more information. This did allow them to interact much more than before. The prince could touch her now (which made all her hairs stand on end), and even make use of her body when she allowed it. During tests, he would make her dance and cut cartwheels and throw darts. It was almost childish. But Hannah couldn't deny the amazing skill that moved her when she gave him the reigns. It was like she couldn't make a wrong move in that state. Still, she was paranoid about taking things too far. Her father's book had warned profusely about losing control of oneself doing such things.
A season had passed, and the prince remained her secret. Hannah was more determined than ever to figure out who he was. One day, while reviewing magical universities to which she might apply, the prince pointed out a name on the list: Hawthorne Academy, a school in the UK. He had never reacted like this before. Hannah was sure that meant she would be able to uncover more about him there. At least, she wouldn't be able to forget it until she tried. So, she sent in an application. The boy that came to visit her at the shrine, Tohru, seemed sad when she told him about moving to America. But he bit his tongue and didn't try to stop her. If he had, maybe things would have been different. But as it was, Hannah packed her bags and prepared. Her parents were surprised at her choice, but they approved because of the school's status. Her father gave her a list of relatives in the country and promised to visit her. He told her that there would be much to enjoy about his home country. Outwardly, she agreed. Who could not appreciate the beauty of the highlands? But inwardly, her thoughts were focused on the prince. One way or another, she
would find out his story.
❀ Hannah's wand was crafted from fresh wisteria wood. She choose the vine herself. The instrument is long and straight, and it retains its natural pure white color. The core was made of white unicorn hair. It's an elegant wand that represents her tempered will.
❀ The young witch has a renewed respect for physical ability after seeing what her familiar is capable of, and so has been putting more effort into staying in shape. She was surprised to find that she was looking forward to more physical classes like dueling, and has been practicing hard for them over the summer.
❀ Still a young woman, Hannah has a healthy interest in fashion, makeup and accessories. She always has something to wear. She likes to carry around a cute purse that is shaped like a white rabbit.
