Name: Savva
Gender: Fem
Race: Goblin
Appearance: This tiny girl makes you think of an industrious ant. She has round yellow eyes that are like two shining suns. Her thick, wavy, very short hair is the color of obsidian, and is worn in a simple bob. She is short and has a muscluar build. Her skin is green like the grass. She has a wide forehead with pointed ears and chin.
Her wardrobe is practical - a simple pale peasant blouse that reaches to her mid-thighs that doubles as her night-dress, nut brown leather lederhosen with cargo pockets, woolen hose, sturdy leather boots and a belt, a multicolored sweater and crotchet cap with holes for her ears to poke through.
Relevant Abilities: - Mechanic with experience with clockwork devices
- Some experience picking locks and disarming traps.
- A climber, good with walls and ropes, knows how to splice, whip, and tie a few knots.
- A brawler who can throw a knife, but not a lot of experience using weapons. Good with darts.
- She can read, write, and do basic math.
- Savva can sew and crochet (mostly to adjust her clothes to fit better)
Personality: - As one of the few goblins in Lower Rath, Savva's had to guard her tongue in public. Especially among the village elders, who have too much to say on the flaws of goblinkind, or how she's dressed. But you can't wear a dress if you're working on a machine.
- Doesn't have a lot of respect for authority, especially if they bad-mouth Gregor. But there are subtler ways to get revenge.
- Life has thrown her a lot of lemons, so she's got very pessimistic expectations, but would welcome a pleasant surprise now and then.
- Very practical - not a lot of frilly clothes when you're a mechanic. Tools, on the other hand....
- With all the climbing she's had to do, Savva's comfortable with climbing well above the ground, has a good head for heights. Likes rooftops.
- Comfortable in small places.
Bio and background:When a goblin nest was discovered in the southern woods, troops raised from the surrounding towns and villages were sent out by the kingdom to clear it.
Soldiers checking a barn found three goblin children - Haki, male and the eldest; Savva the clever middle child; and tiny Kaniz. Some of the troops took Haki to work as their runner, and Kaniz was practically snatched up by the general's wife as a serving girl or pet. Afterward, Savva would only catch a few glances of them from a distance, both seem to be doing well.
Savva was given to Gregor, the unit's mechanic and blacksmith, and chained to his forge. He tried to make her as comfortable as he could - a burlap sack filled with some straw tucked inside a box for a bed, an old blanket, and would fetch the half-rations she was allotted (sometimes a few things added from his rations) while making sure the other soldiers didn't bother her.
Over the weeks that followed, Savva would help around the forge, pumping the bellows, fetching tools or work pieces, or sweeping what she could reach.
When the nest was cleared, Gregor packed up his gear, unchained Savva, and gruffily told her to follow him. He brought Savva home to Lower Rath.
They weren't there ten minutes before Mayor Heath bustled into Gregor's tiny home, forbidding him from allowing Savva to stay in the house. When the mechanic couldn't talk Heath out of it, Gregor cleared out a small storeroom in his workshop for her. Barely a week passed before someone in the night broke in, tying and gagged her before throwing the tiny goblin over his shoulder and running off with her.
Savva was brought to Perry, the infamous local head of the thieves' guild. The robbers needed someone small to slip into open windows and the like - and when Savva refused at first, they threatened Gregor. So a few nights a week, she help them rob one of the shops or manor houses outside the village, or stand watch when they went after a carriage on the road (a short dark cloak and a bandana covering your face isn't going to hide you're a goblin).
Perry quickly warmed to the goblin girl and began teaching her how to be a proper thief - climb walls, appraise goods, read maps, pick locks as well as what pockets she could reach, disarm traps, how to hide and evade, their code words when speaking in public and their secret marks they'd scratch or chalk in places. Savva eventually noticed how the choicer items got set aside. When she asked Perry, he shrugged and said it was for his boss.
This continued for years, with Perry slipping her a piece of the loot or a coin, claiming the rest of her share was going towards her dues.
Gregor taught her a lot about being a mechanic and even how to make her own tools, which was very handy for making her own lockpicks. On her fourteenth summer, Gregor decided to become a clock maker. The rumors and jokes soon followed, with some suggesting that Gregor was raising goblins to put into towers to maintain his clocks. However, his clocks were good, and it brought more business to Lower Rath.
Leaving Perry's hideout one night, Savva bumped into a cloaked man coming in - and realized it was Heath, Little Rath's mayor. A week later, Perry told her that they'd be going after the mayor's house. She realized it was a trap for her, but managed to slip away unseen. Returning home, she woke Gregor and told him everything that had been going on.
He was disappointed in her, but realized that this was probably the mayor's plan all along and that the town guards would soon be there. Gregor hurried her out to the workshop, knocking over one of the clocks from a workbench, which gave him an idea. He then told her to trust him, chaining her up and locking her in the storeroom.
When the Mayor arrived later with two guardsmen, Gregor told him that Savva couldn't have tried to rob the Mayor's place, as she'd knocked over a clock the day before and as punishment, he locked her up in her room. Going into the workshop, the guards could see the busted clock, the chain running under the locked door, and Savva lying in her bed with the callouses on her ankle from the cuff. The mayor stormed away, but Gregor knew Heath would be back.
When the MILOV showed up to pick up a clock, he explained to the captain that the mayor was out to get Savva, how he trained her to be a mechanic, had a good head for heights, knew how to take care of herself, and asked if he could hire the young goblin so as to get her away from the town.
Of course, hearing about the goblin girl being hired aboard the MILOV, the mayor showed up demanding Savva and the clock be searched before being allowed aboard, but the guards found nothing out of the ordinary. She also saw Perry in the crowd, who gave her a wink before vanishing.
