The Otherworld

Imagine a world parallel to our own. It's like ours except this world - Vecta - is built on magic in place of science. Various races of monsters coexist with the 'Morai' (More-I), Vecta's equivalent of humanity. This world is overseen by the Twin Gods: Drasil and Morganna. A brother and sister pair who rule over darkness and light respectively. At first, the brother and sister shared in their dream of creating a perfect world, but clashing ideals about how to go about it drove the siblings apart. For millennia, both have dedicated their time into creating the 'ultimate' beings who will turn Vecta into the perfect world they envision.

Morganna, with her warm and caring demeanor, believed that it was her duty as the goddess of light to oversee the day to day affairs of her people. She would personally ensure their needs were met and that they never wanted for anything. Drasil on the other hand, saw his creations as things to be left alone. They would need to grow strong without having a god stepping in over every minor inconvenience. Over time, the world of Vecta began to descend into a long period of stagnation. Neither god's creations could be viewed as "better" than the other's, and it seemed as though the people and monsters that inhabited Vecta were getting worse with each passing year. A new sort of creation was needed in order to bring a spark to this world.

A new idea would arise by happy accident one day while Morganna was watching our world. She noticed an unsually high number of humans were dying in random accidents or being killed before their alloted time on Earth was up. Feeling pity, Morganna suddenly had an idea! She decided that she would personally take the souls of these unfortunate humans to Vecta and reincarnate them into a new life. This way, they could live out the remaining years of their lives, and she would even have something new to challenge her brother with. Over time, these "Children of the Otherworld" were discovered to have high aptitude for magic, skill acquisition, and warfare than a common resident of Vecta. Upon discovering his sister's plot, Drasil began to watch our world as well in the hopes of finding Otherworlders of his own.

Over time, the frustrations between the siblings began to boil over into all-out conflict. Neither god will admit the other is superior and the balance between light and dark is in constant flux. Will your characters join a god and champion their side? Or will you find a different path to stem the conflict? The choice is yours in... The Otherworld!

Welcome to the Otherworld

In this story, your character has just died a tragic and unexpected death on Earth. In your final moments, you are visted by one of the Twin Gods who offer you a chance at a new life in the world of Vecta. The catch? What life you get reborn as isn't going to be human. In taking a soul from our world to Vecta, it seems the flow of mana between the realms has an... unusual effect on passing souls. In order to pass through, the god will have to reincarnate you as a being of Vecta. Upside, you'll get to build a whole new life AND you get skills!

As you spend your final moments on Earth, your characters last thoughts, desires, wishes, regrets, etc. are going to become the foundation of your new life once you cross over. This will influence your skills, magic, and even what sort of creature you wind up becoming! You could be something as simple as a Morai, or something completely out of pocket like a slime! (Note that this random element is meant to be a unique take for writers would would like a small challenge. An opt out is available if you just want to enjoy the fantasy element)

First posts will act like a "Day in the Life" scenario for your character as a human. Give us an idea of who he/she before they die so there's a compare and contrast element when it comes to designing your character's new life. Upon arriving in Vecta, the adventure is wherever you want to go. Depending on which god visits you, you'll be reincarnated into the light capital Lumis, or the dark capital Sombros. Your reincarnated character will remain the same age as when you died (relative to the race).

Races

Vecta is inhabited by a wide array of people and monsters. While many were created by Morganna or Drasil respectively, there still remain a number of beings the gods created before their differences drove them apart. These are viewed as the "Neutral" races. They aren't drawn towards the light or dark exclusively and this grants them more freedom when it comes to moving around the continent. Examples of races you COULD be are provided below. If there's one not listed, please DM your GM.

As the story goes on, your character will also have the chance to "Evolve" as a race and gain access to more skills and more powerful abilities. An example would be if your character was reincarnated as a Primal race (i.e. a Goblin). Given enough time and experience you could start as a Goblin and evolve: Goblin -> Hobgoblin -> Goblin Lord -> Goblin King. Bear in mind the Morai cannot evolve (as they're human equivalents), but instead they can access new "jobs" in order to strengthen their respective skills. Should you choose Morai as your race, play this carefully as this can be very beneficial.

So, presumably anything beneath Vecta Form isn't filled out until after we reincarnate?

This is what I got so far, let me know if I should add/remove anything, or if there's something that needs editing because it doesn't fit.

@Xaltwind Great first CS to start us off! I don’t have much to critique. Looks great!

@ERode I’d say yes, but I’m open to DMs if you want to get an early jump on character building or if you rather opt out of the randomized nature.

Job
"Captain"

Cause of Death
"Drowning"

Background
There was the village, the wilds, and the ocean.

That was all he knew as a child, the eldest son of an impoverished family of fishermen. He could draw nets at the same pace he learned to walk, and he sailed with his father upon those sky-blue waves when he could understand language and motive. The family had to eat and so did the village. It only made sense to do their part best they could for the betterment of all, for who would be fool enough to hoard more than what they could consume? The largest man of the village didn’t account for much if any two others came up with sticks and stones. Knives made it even easier, if one was willing to up the ante. Fish and humans both spilled their guts after a single swing in the right place, even if one flopped around more than the other.

That was what he was born in, and he had no reason to believe it would ever change.

But the world was connected by the ocean, and what waves made in one part of the world would inevitably reach the other. Even as they ate the same amount, fished the same amount, the yield grew less and less. More ships travelled in the distance, trawling the seas, crossing the waters. And in-land, gunfire and explosions could be heard more and more frequently, the thunder that rolled over cloudless plains. The lands were lawless, but there were those who sought to instate laws regardless, who sought control over those who they’ve never even shared a meal with before. The largest man didn’t account for much if any two others came up with sticks and stones, but two others would be far from enough if the individual had an automatic firearm.

The village could no longer be allowed to exist on its own. It had to be part of a nation now, had to use the national currency, had to pay for the right to live on the land, had to report to officials with more fuel and bullets than common sense and respect for their fellow man.

His father was incensed, but himself? He wasn’t so set in the old ways. If fishing wasn’t enough, then there was another option for someone born to break the waves.

Piracy.

And Captain Belo was good at it.

He was already big, and he ate to get even bigger, understanding that even in the age of projectile weapons, there was nothing quite as intimidating as sheer mass to the human psyche. He learned the language of his victims, affecting himself with the accent of their leaders, for this was no crime he committed, but rather a business transaction. He remained generous, even as his activities estranged himself from his family, and the breadth of his heart made him popular in the markets whenever he needed investors to chip in on his business ventures. Others were more savage, more brutal, but with that unfettered violence came that risk of simply being conned. Captain Belo though? His name travelled as his activities did. He dressed well, possessed good manners, and his crew suffered the fewest casualties out at sea. They trusted him, and he rewarded them for their trust in kind.

It was a golden time, just as brilliant as those days in his youth, when all he had to think about was the day’s catch. He once caught fish, then he caught ships.

Now, however? He couldn’t catch either.

International patrols made his job more and more dangerous. The provisional government no longer condoned such activities, in exchange for foreign aid. The markets were frequented by less investors, and those he once knew had to turn upon their own kind in order to set food on the table. Foreign elements strengthened their foothold upon the arid lands, and when he returned to his village, to his home, he found that he had been sending money back to a ghost town.

The fisheries had dried up. Foreign vessels had won the war, and nothing remained but an old, sun-bleached skiff, laid upon the sands

He sat there for a bit. Considered the invitations he had received. There was always a need for a singular package of muscles and brains. He spoke the language of foreign merchants well, had a level-headed attitude, and could be relied upon to deliver and share. Though it would be a den of snakes he strode into, they would not bite him.

But he was a man of the sea. Caves didn’t suit him.

And so, Belo set the skiff in the waters, gripped the well-worn handle of the paddle, and began to row, off upon a voyage which he would not return from.

If it will help, I've got a great goblin pic, but I'm good with anything you'd like instead.

@Expendable
Well... At least it wasn't that clown from Dead Rising, who dual-wields chainsaws... And decapitated all the people on the in-mall rollercoaster... Although that probably would've been less painful than Sam's breakfast-machine-death... ^^;

FYI, everyone. You are allowed to choose which of the two gods finds/reincarnates you. Morgnna for 'light' races, and Drasil for 'dark'. So it's technically choosing your reincarnation gatcha @Zeroth XD

@Expendable My only critique here would be to maybe use a different FC. Don't bring my girl Yor into this. Haha. (This is a joke)

Also, I'd fix the sheet thing, but I'm at work pretty much all day so quick stuff like this is all I can do.

I asked Zerochan for female assassins, and got a lot of Yor.

@Crimson Flame Wait what, how are his parents wizards? Isn't the "former life" supposed to be our normal, modern day Earth?

@TheNoCoKid To be honest it doesn't matter as much to me which one of them picks him up. Although I'm kind of hoping for a non-human, monstrous roll so I guess if I HAVE to pick, I'd pick Drasil?

@Zeroth If you’re going for a neutral race, then either one will work.
