Tillius

The shadows gave way to reality, and the first thing Tillius heard was Gray Flame. Everything else he had been fighting earlier was gone, even the blood on his sword. This was starting to get freaky. He clearly wasn't knowledgeable with any of this.

The orc gave Vesemir a solid nod, sheathed his sword back in his sword and turned to the group who were caught in the fighting. It seemed like everyone made it out relatively unscathed.

"If anyone is injured, go in the middle." He said.

“I hope you will enlighten us to what exactly that was, and why it hasn’t been dealt with when we get out of here, darling.”

To that question, Gray Flame didn't seem very happy hearing it. After briefly shifting his stony-cold masked face toward Fia, he quickly moved toward the lantern, picked it up, and handed it to Vesemir with nary a word.

Returning to Fia in a similarly enigmatic fashion, the monocled elf smiled. "I would ask for a pardon, that these are the questions that best discussed when are... not here, Dear Fia."

Surely that wasn't much of an answer for someone like Fia, but let it be a problem for another time. What mattered now was they were moving again, and the urgency to do so was at least acknowledged by everyone else. Tillius showed that by giving a solid nod at Vesemir when the elf took his position as their rear guard.

"If anyone is injured, go in the middle." The orc said.

Thankfully nobody was severely injured, despite that, Fia jogged past him to catch up with Carnathia, asking about the orb of light.

The middle-aged elf was carrying both a shining lantern and a thin, straight sword. It was revealed that the sword was his unsheathed walking stick all along. Although the sword may not have been able to harm any lingering phantoms, it seemed the elf wanted to show that he too was capable of fighting.

And so they marched again, a bit more careful than before despite the additional light. Vesemir told them that their destination was the city Library, but Gray further clarified that the building used to be Lasse's municipal office, and located a bit east of the city.

It was a long march, but it seemed they were no longer at the epicenter of Lasse's past tragedies. The shadows were almost non-existent here, and if they did appear, they were no longer manifesting on the path, but rather, shyly peaking from the windows and doors of the abandoned houses.

The municipal office was a large, slightly elevated building with two pillars flanking its entrance. Despite clearly showing signs of neglect, the building seemed intact; though it was hard to guess the color in this darkness, the roof was still neatly pared, and the two large pillars and tiles were still in good condition. Only the supposedly wooden frames of its doors and windows had already rotted away by the passage of time.

"This is the building." Said Vesemir enthusiastically.

He then spared a moment to speak to Forbann, telling him that he could rest here and keep watch. The Armored Oni agreed with that plan.

"When the Prince of Isrion attacked the City, dozens of Lasse residents took refuge here." Rambled the elf as they climbed the stairs. "Theriadore was indeed a powerful magician, the record said the Human Prince tried to besiege this building, but the Magistrate's enchantment made it impenetrable."

Pausing to sigh and caress the pillar, Vesemir spoke again, his tone changed from somber to utter disgust.

"Makes you wonder if things could have ended differently if he was here, rather than be seated in Alkautsar Council. It happened generations ago, but my blood boils whenever I think about this piece of history. The sheer incompetence was infuriating, and all of that was just for political gain. Luithiel did nothing wrong! She did what a leader was supposed to do, to make That accursed Black Armored prince pay the ultimate price. Mark my words, she was sentenced as a hero."

"Though, someone might argue that she was too excessive with her method," murmured Gray Flame as he followed the monocled elf into the building.

"True, I must admit that Theriador too would definitely agree with that proposition, but in Luithiel's defense, excessiveness was the response to the inadequacy of those who are supposed to be in charge. Lukman's death was unfortunate, but Varenheim's inability to see things perspicaciously was not without blame either..."

"Anyway." Vesemir suddenly stopped and looked over his shoulder. "The place is safe, theoretically... the enchantment spell wears out over time, and my calculation said, even if he did not deactivate it, Theriador's spell had expired a century ago. Just don't stray too far from this corridor if you doubt it."

Following Vesemir and Gray's recommendation, the party skipped other sections and walked straight until they reached a cross-corridor. One to the south had a stone plaque that reads archive room, and the other, which led to the north also had a plaque that read "library". Needless to say, the group took the north path.

At the end of that corridor was an antechamber with spiral stairs made of concrete that ended in another corridor that was part of an underground complex. After yet another boring descent, the party was stopped in front of a large door, it was locked.

But that door wouldn't be locked for too long. The eccentric elf Jovially took out a rectangular card made of silky material from his pocket and rubbed it like a precious thing. Then, he inserted it into a slit under the door's metallic doorknob and waited.

There was the sound of a lock being disengaged, and the heavy door slowly swayed open with a rumble.

"Years of scouring Casediar Black Market is finally paying off!" Chimmed the archeologist, reclaiming his partially ejected card from the socket and giving it a peck.

Behind that door was a cavernous hall with many supporting pillars, bookshelves, and seating furniture that looked oddly preserved. There were four crystal lamps on the ceilings, they were unlit and hung by metallic chains.

As the party walked into the library, they noticed there was another door at the other end of the hall, it was guarded by a silhouette of a hulking humanoid entity, that upon closer observation seemed to be a motionless statue resembling a fully armored human knight with a helmet visor divided into four plates that house a pale, ruby-like crystal. It stood menacingly next to that door, like a steadfast sentinel protecting a precious treasure.

Appropriate to its size, the statue was armed with a heavy Warhammer that curiously, was made of proper metal; clearly, it wasn't intended for decorative purposes.

"I think that door is Theriadore's workshop," Vesemir said, raising his lantern to find a hanger on the pillars. Fortunately, he found one, and as he hung the magic lantern higher, the illumination was reflected by the nearby crystal lamp on the ceiling. The lamp, in turn, reflected the light to the other lamps, providing enough illumination to light up the entire hall.

"Friends! That will be our next destination."

"Heads up! It's not an ordinary statue." Warned Gray Flame, raising his hand to make everyone stop their advance.

"A golem?"

"Looks like it. And the expensive one at that, they made a few of it in Nuria to guard important facilities. This one was custom-made, kinda what to expect from someone like Theriadore. It's still on standby mode, see that crystal on its head? It glows with a faint light, which means it is saving its power, but the battery capacity is still adequately loaded. The crystal serves as its eye, the targeting module, and in battle mode, it can be charged up to fire a powerful energy beam."

"Awfully knowledgable about this kind of thing, aren't you?"

The Masked elf, with his masked face, could only stare at Vesemir with his trademark blank expression. "Only a bit. Anyway, what do you think? Do you have a century-old-something from the black market that we can use to get rid of that thing?"

He then turned to everyone else. "What about you guys? Ever had any experience with a magical construct before?"

Roxas

Roxas wandered close to the group, not really asking questions but keeping her gaze on alert not that she knew this place wasn't normal. Once they made it to the building, and Vesemir had his small ramble of the history and how someone should have been here, she still kept her gaze alert.

They moved inside and her eyes wandered the halls. The spell may have been gone, but there was definitely remnants of it long since echoing around. They made it to the door, and Vesemir expertly.. and swiftly.. opened the door.

Her gaze widened as she looked around the library, moving to get out of the way of the door but also no stray too far into the space. Her eyes landed on the construct and they hardened. She listened to Vesemir and Gray before raising her hand. "I have. They were in one of the ruins I had to go to for a job. It helped me gain a spell to protect others; it nearly killed my party at the time. Taking out the eye is priority for sure. It can't target properly if it can't access your signature. Unfortunately, since it's magic.. it won't be going down easily either."

She looked to the group. "I recommend a spread out approach and one to two people taking out the eye while others provide distraction. If it fires up the beam, then.. the library will be in flames, but.. it's either that or.. get sliced by a beam." She offered a shrug. "I believe once the eye is taken care it, it has something on its body to completely.. disservice it. This is also information based on the ones in the dungeon I've been to; not on a custom-made one, but I believe it might have the same basic structure. At least I hope."

Carnatia de Luson

As the group started moving, Carnatia noticed Fia approaching her, before starting a conversation.

Fia jogged a little to catch up with Carnatia. Between her, the lantern, and Gray Flame, the light flame shared between them held something familiar. “That light. What is it? How are you radiating it?”

With a little shrug, Carnatia replied, "You would have to ask Sir Gray, I'm afraid. I was merely following his instructions.

She then added with a small sigh, "Though good luck prying the answers off him."

They then continued their journey, as Vesemir and Gray led them further inside the ruins, where Carnatia noticed the phantoms receding, creeping just around the corner but no longer swarming. Still, not wanting to be caught in whatever it was the phantoms were doing, Carnatia did her utmost to ignore them. Without them swarming her and their incessant whispers, it was a much easier task.

Eventually, they reached a building with two pillar columns placed at its entrance.

As she had thought, an elf like Vesemir perceived that war differently than the more mainstream interpretation, at least in the human lands. To the elves, the war was at most an excessive to Serensiel's tyranny, to the humans—who won, and thus wrote history—the war was justified and was retribution to Serensiel's perceived threat and aggression. Prince Isrion was even somewhat romanticized as a hero, especially in Westernant since it has absorbed his kingdom. At worst, the mainstream interpretation of human historians was that his more questionable acts were meant as a deterrent and in the long run saved more lives by squashing any possible retaliation after the war by the elves.

Carnatia's thought on the matter, as with most things, was that the truth probably lies in the middle of the two extremes. No doubt that Isrion rose against Serensiel's tyranny, but he also committed atrocities that he probably could do without. Still, war is war, both will have committed atrocities, and as the dust settles, the victors will exalt their leaders as heroes and the enemy leaders as villains. It was simply the way of the world. It was what it was. To Carnatia it was not abhorrent nor was it virtuous, it was merely how the world—and politics—work. Just as if the reverse happened, no doubt Varenheim would've done the same.

Of course, Vesemir was free to think what he thought, as long as he fulfilled his end of the contract, Carnatia did not particularly care what he thought of that war. Perhaps if she was still a noble of Westernant she would be concerned with a prominent historian having such a conflicting opinion with her kingdom's official narrative and stance, because protecting their kingdom—including their dignity and political standing—was the obligation of a noble. But she was no longer a noble, so it really was none of her business.

And so she followed the rest of the group silently until they reached the library, where a statue can be seen at the end of the hall, as if guarding the door behind it.

He then turned to everyone else. "What about you guys? Ever had any experience with a magical construct before?"

Carnatia replied, "I do have experience disenchanting magical construct in general, though I'm not sure how effective it would be on a golem.

Fia Blackfire

Fia kept pace with Carnatia as they continued on their venture. Though the phantoms remained present, they didn’t attempt another mindjack. It was an odd sort of peace. The ruins were silent, but malevolent entities still remained in the shadows just outside the reach of the lantern’s light. Whatever kept the road in pristine condition before seemed to be doing the same to the ruins. Even after so long, thin walls and trampled fences remained in the sorry state they were left since the events the phantom enlightened Fia to. In a way, it was disturbing to see such ancient evidence of long lost history continue to tell its tale.

Fia turned her head to Carnatia as they walked. “I have to speak with him, huh? Given how little he has said through your persistence, I might have better luck waking the ent again.” Fia sighed. They continued their journey in relative silence. Despite the respite Vesemir mentioned, they seemed to be on guard in case the phantoms attempted to envelope them again. Knowing the last time Fia fell into their influence, Fia was especially careful to not stare at any of the shifting shadows.

It was only a bit, but the group had arrived at the municipal building. Everything seemed to be smooth sailing once they were inside. Everything was eerily preserved and quiet. No surprises there. Fia looked down the hall leading to the archives. She really didn’t expect to see anything, but she was curious to see whether it lead to another staircase. Perhaps another underground area. Fia followed the group north and soon they were within the library.

While everyone observed the armored construct near the door by the hall, Fia wandered closer to a bookcase, carefully examining their conditions. After so many years, Fia expected the books to have deteriorated to the point of being unreadable, if in tact at all. Maybe like the road and building, the books survived the test of time.

Fia looked up at the ceiling as the crystal lamps reflected the lantern’s light, illuminating the room entirely. She blinked her eyes a little as light pushed back the darkness they waded throughout the night. Her gaze followed the handle down to Vesemir and then to the few others talking about the golem. Fia wandered close as Gray Flame asked a question involving golems. Fia looked at the armored figure, the crystalline eye inside the helm. Motionless as it was, it was imposing.

“I have experience with them as well. Not exactly first hand, if I’m being honest.” said Fia, “I know this sweet kid who travels with one. It looks nothing like this though. It's pretty strong despite how it looks. If this one is as impressive as it looks compared to his, then we should be careful not to anger it, darlings.”

"Ah, welcome back!" Engelbert jovially greeted the newly awakened, seeing their eyes flickering back into consciousness. And without any extra shade-inflicted grievous wound either! "Right about time, I believe we are overstaying our welcome- The shrieking howl from the nearby ruin punctuated the statement, the knight gesturing to that general direction. "So let us be on our way, eh?"

The group hurried, curiosity momentarily dampened by the powerful urge of not getting horribly murdered in an illusory world. Following Sir Gray's lead, they rapidly left the more severe spectral infestation into an eeriely quiet part of the ruined town. A large-ish building emerged from the darkness, bigger than any other structures he had seen so far, seemingly untouched by the shade's presence. Whatever enchantment that protected the stone had long since ran its course, rendering the building as mundane - if well built - as any other. Engelbert spared one last glance outside before passing the threshold into the building, the gnarled tips of the dead tree's branch barely visible in the distance like countless crooked fingers clawing at the night sky.

A corvid sat at the remnant of a wall across the munincipal building, though the knight showed no sign of noticing it as he turned and stepped inside.

While he doubted he'd spot anything that may be lurking within before it did, Engelbert didn't slacken on the watch. His glances darted from empty hallways to dark corners, alert for any sign of nefarious intent revealed by the strong beam of Vesemir's lantern. Nothing was apparent though, even as they reached the destination and the elf almost smugly produced a keycard to open the way. Soon enough, however, the latest roadblock made itself known.

"That glint, its weapon is entirely metallic. If it can swing it effectively, even a glancing blow will be devastating." Engelbert observed, sizing up the silent guardian. Actually... looking at the door behind him, and then back at where the golem stood, the thing must be at least half a fold larger than a regular human. He increased the potential threat level of the golem up by a notch, the more mass it could move around the deadlier it would be. "I've dismantled my fair share of golems, but it mostly bears down to giving them severe enough beating until they stops moving. Golems usually still have more vulnerable precision parts to help them move efficiently, these can be damaged even if the outer shell is tougher."

It's more energy efficient to make use of mechanical advantage than to magically animate an empty shell after all. Not to mention how the latter was vulnerable to disruption, physical and otherwise. He wondered how the elven golem would fare after millenia of neglect, but considering how well-preserved everything seemed to be... they'll have a fight in their hands soon.

"I can keep it occupied, does anyone have heavy enough attack to properly damage it?"

The Gray Flame

"I have. They were in one of the ruins I had to go to for a job. It helped me gain a spell to protect others; it nearly killed my party at the time. Taking out the eye is priority for sure. At Roxas' explanation, Gray Flame nodded in acknowledgment. If he had a notebook, he would write it down, even.

Still, there were a few things that he learned; that Roxas expertise as their backup shielder could prove useful. This was not her first time fighting a golem, and of course, there were few speculations, but Gray wasn't feeling to lecture anybody at the moment.

"Be ready to use your defensive spell when it starts to focus its beam. That's the cue before it unleashes its laser attack."

Then he turned to Fia and Carnathia.

"So, what do you think?"

Carnatia replied, "I do have experience disenchanting magical construct in general, though I'm not sure how effective it would be on a golem.

"Honestly, What concerns me more is engaging that thing in melee combat, something that a golem is purposely created for. I will not recommend it unless you see an opening."

"Definitely not from me, not soon anyway," Gray Flame rubbed his wrist lazily. "I can fire a devastating shot at its core, but I doubt something as advanced as that would expose its weak point without a countermeasure."

He shook his head and clicked his tongue. "This is sensitive information, but I will choose to not earn more ire from Carnathia this time. The Military doesn't usually build one with exposed Crystal like that, and destroying that crystal could either shut it down or make that thing self-destruct and destroy the entire facility. It's Theriadore's creation after all, and obviously, that thing is here to protect a secret."

When the party's Main Fighters were busying themselves with their petty plan, the beautiful Sorceress told them her experience.

"Well unless one of us is Theriadore, I think we have angered that thing already. Look!"

Vesemir pointed at the stone guardian. It started moving, and from it, everyone could hear a clicking sound, like a busy and dusty clockwork suddenly in motion again after centuries of inactivity.

The moment Engelbert finished talking, a bright red light flashed out from the Golem's crystal eye, followed by a robotic announcement.

"ꜱᴄᴀɴɴɪɴɢ... ᴜɴꜱᴄʜᴇᴅᴜʟᴇᴅ ᴇɴᴛʀʏ ᴅᴇᴛᴇᴄᴛᴇᴅ..."

Another flash of light suddenly exposed the entire hall, and before anyone from the party could discern the meaning of the voice earlier, another announcement followed suit.

"ꜱᴄᴀɴɴɪɴɢ... ᴜɴʀᴇᴄᴏɢɴɪᴢᴇᴅ ᴘᴇʀꜱᴏɴɴᴇʟ ᴅᴇᴛᴇᴄᴛᴇᴅ. ᴠᴏɪᴄᴇ ꜱᴀᴍᴘʟᴇs... ᴍɪꜱᴍᴀᴛᴄʜᴇᴅ, ꜰᴀᴄɪᴀʟ ɪᴅᴇɴᴛɪꜰɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴ... ᴇʀʀᴏʀ."

30 meters ahead, The golem's head twitched left and right, and the red crystal in its face suddenly emitted a wide, cone-shaped dim light that spanned over a wide area. It straightened its posture and redied its weapon as it diverted its red spotlight on everyone, before finally focusing on Engelbert.

"ᴀꜱꜱᴇꜱꜱᴍᴇɴᴛ - ᴘʀᴏᴄᴇᴇᴅ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴀʟᴛᴇʀɴᴀᴛᴇ ꜱᴜʙʀᴏᴜᴛɪɴᴇ... ᴛᴇʀᴍɪɴᴀᴛᴇ ᴛʜᴇ ɪɴᴛʀᴜᴅᴇʀs."

Heavy footsteps echoed throughout the hall as the construct advanced towards the party. It had finished its winding up and was ready for battle.

At that moment, Gray Flame looked at his Iron-clad buddy and sighed exasperatedly as he drew his bow. "Well, what do you think? Can you keep it busy?"

Tillius

Unlike the rest, Tillius didn't have much experience dealing with golems, so he preferred to stay silent and listen. From the description of both Gray Flame, Roxas and others, it didn't seem like the orc would require his sword here, not at least now. No need to bite into granite and rocks. The target to look out for were the eyes and its monstrous warhammer. There might be a coordination module somewhere according to Engelbert but who knows where it is in this one.

"If you'd consider this damaging, I can try going for its eyes or core." Tillius showed Engelbert the wooden javelin. It wasn't an impressive show, but it's at least an option. "I'm better off playing the bait though."

Tillius watched calmly as the golem switched from its dormant state to an immediate danger. At least he was expecting to having to fight this, he held his javelin as if it was a normal spear, and his shield ready to block or deflect its warhammer if he ever failed the dodge.

"Let's not delay further. What's everyone's role?"

If the golem began attacking and the elf still hadn't doled out what he was supposed to have done, Tillius would take charge.

Roxas

Roxas looked up as the golem seemed to become alerted to them. She pulled her bow from her shoulder and pulled a couple arrows from her quiver. She moved to the left and behind some bookshelves. She moved to a specific on and grabbed it. She rocked it to see how sturdy it was. If it was deemed sturdy, she climbed it and crouched on top of the bookshelf. She notched an arrow and aimed it, but didn't pull her bow.

"If we don't want to try to destroy to eye, then simply damage it enough so it stops working, or cover it!" She glanced to the rest of the group from her vantage point. She was ready to jump down and activate her shield if she wanted to, but it would drain a lot of her mana if she did it. She wanted to be sure they would need it; she wasn't sure it would stop a beam from hitting people.

"I'll jump down and get the shield up if it gets too bad; not sure it'll stop the beam though, so if we can avoid it activating a beam, that'd be idle!" She hoped it would only wield the large weapon it had and not have a defense mechanism that would do something she couldn't stop.

Carnatia de Luson

As the golem activated and her fellow party members were throwing out ideas on how to engage the golem, Carnatia stepped forward. Taking charge was not her first inclination, but when no one else was stepping up, she supposed she would. Third child or not she was a former daughter of a prestigious family with a knighthood lineage expected to lead armies. So she had some training.

"If the issue is avoiding destroying the eye, I believe I might have a solution. I would not be able to disenchant it in one strike of my blade, but with several, perhaps I could have it cease functioning. Those well-versed in close combat should form ranks and be the vanguard. Keep the golem busy. Those with ranged capabilities, spells or otherwise, provide cover fire to create an opening. I will attempt to slip past it and strike the golem and dispel its enchantment. If you have any spells that would help me do so, do cast it. If you have any objections, speak now before the golem fully activates!"

As she gave out orders, she cast her illusion magic, making eight copies of herself. While they were incorporeal, just with the ranged attacks she had ordered them to do, it would increase the amount of information the golem would have to process, leading to a greater chance of it showing an opening.

"Surely it shouldn't contain enough energy for that kind of damage at this point?" Engelbert voiced with some skepticism, though there's no time to wait for answer when the golem itself roused into activity. Stepping forward ahead of the rest of the party, the knight draw his own sword into a high guard with the tip pointed at the sole enemy. "Seems that it's displeased by our presence. Leave it to me!"

Closer and closer, it was increasingly apparent that the golem was... big. Made him felt like a malnourished teenager before a barbarian wildman. Would be so much better if Forbann was here, but he felt that the golem wouldn't allow anyone to disengage to get the big oni.

Oh well, time to earn his keep.

He'll maintain a defensive posture, to deflect incoming blow away should the golem attack the moment it got into range. Test out how strong it was, exactly. Once the capability was gauged, he can engage it for real. Engelbert was likely weaker than the golem as far as raw physical might went, but he should be resilient enough to not be instantly swept away.

Fia Blackfire

Fia’s comment was more optimistic than probable as she watched the mechanical armor power up. It wasn’t very long since she and a few of the others exited combat, and now it looked like some other magical being was engaging them. With heavy steps, the golem was steadily approaching the group. Engelbert stepped forward to intercept, and Tillius looked to be ready to intervene himself. While everyone else repositioned themselves, Fia hardly moved. She was already behind everyone. With such capable soldiers and/or ex-soldiers in the front line, Fia considered herself well protected.

However, just in case, Fia right hand was moved to rest just before her face. Holding her thumb and index finger together, she brought her hand down in front of her resting it before her abdomen. As she made this gesture, hundreds of threads barely perceptible began to weave around her figure, intertwining into a covering made of magic. Though her hand stopped at her stomach, the threads continued to weave down to her feet. With the spell finished, Fia was covered entirely in a mystical armor that barely glimmered in the crystal light.

“Well, it has the power, is awake, and is angered. Clearly, time had no concession to the elves of old.” said Fia. As she was speaking, she slowly walked to her side so that she was less in direct in the golem’s current path. Her hand drifted to her shoulder bag. She slipped her hand under the flap. From underneath, the fabric rustled as the glass ball contained inside once again was exposed to the air outside. Floating slowly, the starburst orb eventually came to rest near her right forearm, following it as she moved her arm back in front of her.

Fia lifted her left arm. At the same time, the starburst within her glass sphere started to glow a dark orange. Perhaps if she created a pitfall of sorts? Fia’s gaze quickly went over to Tillius and Engelbert, and the infrastructure. She thought better not risk a collapse. Instead, the sphere glowed light blue with off white highlight. “Carefully, darlings. I’m going to immobilize it.” said Fia. The glass sphere transferred sides from her right to her left, as her right hand seemingly threw a crystal shard of magic at the floor beneath the golem. Much like her pillar of light from before, this one would spawn a column of ice. The ice would attempt to envelope anything above it like an animal frozen within a glacier. She then prepared another. A small bit of concentrated mana forming over her right palm, readying to cast another spell of ice.

The golem's head moved, tracking and rapidly shifting between different illusions. It attempted to do something, red lines glowing across the armor before it abruptly crackled with static and fizzled with no apparent effect. For a moment it paused, whatever subroutine buried in its artificial mind navigating through the problem.

"ERROR. TERMINATE."

It swung the oversized warhammer with titanic force, the aftereffect cracking like a bullwhip as it passed through the probing illusions. The golem wielded the weapon with textbook mastery, its grip alternating between wide and controlled swing as it just barely missed the pillars it passed by.

Ignoring the illusions that was already struck once, it advanced onto Engelbert with a mighty overhead swing. Metallic ring echoed from the impact, the hammerhead meeting the flat of the blade before sliding past, the momentum bleeding ineffectually instead of crushing the knight under.

At this moment Fia seized the opening, a rapidly creeping layer of ice rising underneath the golem. It reacted with unnatural haste, stomping and kicking off just out of the area. The rime caught most of one leg, coating it up to the knee though unlike the illusory invaders earlier the golem was nowhere as vulnerable to the cold.

As if finding a priority target, the cyclopean crimson gleam fixed onto the sorceress. The golem stomped twice, breaking off most of the ice before it bowled forward. It tackled past Engelbert whose attempt of obstruction lasted a grand total of 1.3 seconds before he's bodily shoved aside, shouting compaints about not being made out of a ton of steel.

It was slightly clumsy, crushed ice sticking to its heel making its footing kinda precarious, but even then it stomped forward with the unwavering surety of a mindless creation of magic.

The ice was shrugged off like a brittle hoarfrost.

"See what I mean?" muttered Gray, to nobody in particular. "Imagine getting caught in that nasty stomping."

The masked elf quickly relocated to the right, carefully positioning himself near the pillar in case he needed a solid cover.

A quick observation of the Golem's attack patterns when it dealt with Carnathia's mirror images and its deliberate attempt not to hit the pillar suggest that this particular unit's combat inhibitor was sophistically calibrated, and admittedly, quite perceptive at that. Why would someone did that? Well, the most obvious answer was that Theriadore would want to protect his collections even beyond the grave, and it was here to protect the valuables, not a secret. And it was capable of recognizing the valuables.

It was too early to conclude, but if proven true, the peculiarities could be exploited. He just needed to do some testing first.

"Smart piece of hardware that was..." Now standing next to Fia, Gray drew his longbow and notched an arrow, sparing a moment to glance at Fia and noticed the gleam of icy aura around her hand. "Hello Madam, I am afraid the ice won't cut it. Elements are bad for the books, and our stern librarian here might think you are too cool for this place!"

The joke was awful, but what the hell! Now refocusing his aim on the Golem's bright headlight, the masked elf released his ordinary arrow.

Rezello

The morning star swung true, smashing the Captain's helmeted head and sending his already bent posture to slam down against the paved ground. The morning star's protruding spikes penetrated the metal helmet, and for a while, remained stuck on the captain's head until Rezello yanked it free.

It felt real; the impact, the recoil, the sensation when the spike hit the captain's head. The feeling when you were sure that man's head was already caved in like a watermelon. Yet, no trace of blood could be seen as the captain lay unmoving before him, and then for a while, all Rezello could hear was the cacophony of dark whispering that suddenly intensified, voiced by begrudging, shadowy spectators.

As if conforming, That the blow was fatal, the captain was dead, and there was no mistake in that.

Rezello stared down at the corpse of the captain as he pulled his weapon from its crushed head, its spiked end showing no traces of the flesh and bone it had shattered. His focus on the body was soon broken by the sound of the whispers that surrounded him, and as he turned to join the others - who had just finished off their own group of attackers - the burning city around them was flooded with light. The whispers faded as the glow engulfed everything around them, and as quickly as it had enveloped their surroundings, the light disappeared and the party returned to reality, with wounds and fatigue the only evidence of their clash with the phantoms.

While Vesemir checked on the returned, Gray Flame suggested they press on, his warnings of fading respite quickly evidenced by the sudden howling of winds, upon which travelled otherworldly moans that seemed to eminate from the nearby buildings. Without hesitation or question, the party moved forward, making their way through the ruins towards their goal. as they moved out of the denser sections of the city ruins, the presence of the shadow-phantoms seemed to thin, restricting themselves to the interiors of the abandoned buildings that lined their path. After some time, they reached the library.

This ought to be interesting. There were rumors of the hidden contents of Lasse's library even in my time, but I never had the opportunity to look into them myself.

As the party - minus Forbann, who remained behind to guard the entrance - made their way through the building, Vesemir began another speech, recalling events surrounding the invasion of the city by the prince of Isrion and his attempt to assault the library while civillians took refuge in its walls. Rezello recalled something he had learned in his youth - Isrion, one of the old human kingdoms prior to the unification that created Westernant. Scheel was built on lands that were once part of Isrion; recalling the phantom captain's accusation that he was a traitor, he wondered if there could've been some connection between the two, or if it was merely a coincidence.

That train of thought was broken when the party reached a locked door, which Vesemir opened with a small, thin rectangle; some form of key - enchanted, most likely - of a design Rezello was unfamiliar with. The door opened to a large chamber that was in remarkable condition, given the length of time it must have gone neglected. At the opposite end of the room, guarding a doorway that seemed to be their destination, stood a statue of an imposing armored knight, wielding a warhammer of solid steel. A single crystal was mounted in the center of its unusual helmet, resembling a single eye, and as the party discussed how to deal with it, the crystal lit up, a combination of magic and intricate mechanisms coming to life as the golem awoke.

Ah, a golem. Classic defense construct. I'd let the others focus on the precision strikes against that crystal, and as long as its attention is focused on your companions, put your strength to good use and try to find some openings in its defenses to break through before it slaughters all of you.

With a flash of light, Rezello's bec de corbin was once more in his grasp, turned so as to strike with its hammer head. As the spirit in his mask advised him on what to do, he had already begun moving to circle behind the stone warrior while its attention moved between Carnatia's illusions, Engelbert, and Fia. "As long as its focus is elsewhere", he spoke, winding up his weapon for a swing, "I'm going to try to find a vulnerability to exploit." Though he knew little about fighting golems, he knew plenty about fighting armored humanoids, and if the exposed areas of plate armor translated to weak points in the golem's physical defenses, the back of the knee would make for a suitable opening. With one leg already slowed by Fia's frost magic, he aimed his strike at the knee of the other.

The arrow found its mark on the golem, who didn't even bothered to dodge. It clunked in the eyehole where the crimson gleam coming from, not finding any purchase before falling out with its momentum spent. Seems that whatever the material it constituted of was tougher than a single arrow.

Rezello barely made it in time, circling to find the golem from the side just as it passed by. A precise blow found the back of the knee, a familiar crimson lines spiderwebbing from the point of impact before it summarily frizzled and died. The resulting impact resounded in a satisfying dull thud, the metal striking stone and found it wanting.

The golem still continued forward, but an increasingly discordant grinding noise echoed from the joint and at the third step something snapped. It stumbled, the damaged knee missed a beat and the following iced heel found the ground at an awkward angle, slipping uncontrollably instead of finding a measured landing.

It fell heavily onto its knee, one arm catching the ground to avoid fully dropping.

The shinobi doesn't have a time to recollect thoughts from the previous events, and yet he was already clad in his usual shinobi attire, the talent that had been learnt from his precious life with his master. He focuses on the scenario and decided to make an action. He made a posture as he rise his arm weilding his blade in horizontal manner. Releasing a demonic energy amplifying his destructive nature that damages to anything. He proceed to the foe made a posture and slide his hand on lighting his sword into maroon fire like aura. A then swing it to the arm that only supporting and then dunking his sword on the center masse at the back of golem by performing a plunging attack and then back flip into safe distance.

As the sword thrust deep into the concrete, the shura fire spread in quickly on its whole body. The fire of destruction slowly fading the essence of existence of the artificial golem.

The blade coated in baleful aura struck at the golem, meeting resistance for a split second before plunging through with little difficulty. The guardian pushed itself up, hammer swinging in an arc that barely missed the retreating shinobi, knee joint grinding loudly in protest. A hole was visibly bored straight through, liquefied stone glowing orange-yellow as it dripped out like molten blood. Not a big wound considering the golem's size, but the continuous sparks and errant mana scattering from the site indicated the continuous damage the molten stone wreacked upon the internal system.

"E.E.EE.ERR. R. DA.DA.DAMAG. C.C.AL A.A.TH.Z.Z.ED."

Including the speaker system, apparently, judging from the totally not ominous pieces of message it barely managed to let out.

Roxas

Roxas kept her gaze on the golem and watched her teammates attack it. Her eyes widened a little bit before jumping off the bookshelf. She got a gaze and shot a couple arrows into the spot that was now exposed before slinging her bow over her head to rest on her body. She moved closer to the door they wanted to get into.

She was getting ready to cast the barrier if she needed to. The golem almost started to sound like he was going blow up! "I'll open my barrier over here if it needs to be open." Her gaze moved to Vesemir still at the door, then kept her gaze on the golem again. She watched the others to make sure they aren't hurt before she was looking to the golem again.

Tillius

The knee of the golem was in disarray, and that weird barbarian did strike a good blow against it somewhat. The molten blood seeping out of its stone seemed serious, if not fatal. To make sure, Tillius readied his wooden javelin, moved to a spot where he had a clear shot of the exposed stone.

The orc took a few steps back before moving his entire body into the throw. From the two steps run, the lean back, the arm length and the orc strength, it was tailor for a piercing shot towards that molten stone. The golem's system were begging for death with its screech, and hopefully this should put it out of its misery.
